Continuum Mechanics and Theory of Materials
Peter Haupt Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: Accessories:
ASIN: 354043111X |
Book Description
This treatise attempts to portray the ideas and general principles of the theory of materials within the framework of phenomenological continuum mechanics. It is a well-written mathematical introduction to classical continuum mechanics and deals with concepts such as elasticity, plasticity, viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity in nonlinear materials. The aim of a general theory of material behaviour is to provide a classified range of possibilities from which a user can select the constitutive model that applies best. The book will be invaluable to graduate students of materials science in engineering and in physics. The new edition includes additional analytical methods in the classical theory of viscoelasticity. This leads to a new theory of finite linear viscoelasticity of incompressible isotropic materials. Anisotropic viscoplasticity is completely reformulated and extended to a general constitutive theory that covers crystal plasticity as a special case.

Continuum Theory of Plasticity
Akhtar S. Khan , and Sujian Huang Manufacturer: Wiley-Interscience ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0471310433 |
Book Description
The only modern, up-to-date introduction to plasticity Despite phenomenal progress in plasticity research over the past fifty years, introductory books on plasticity have changed very little. To meet the need for an up-to-date introduction to the field, Akhtar S. Khan and Sujian Huang have written Continuum Theory of Plasticitya truly modern text which offers a continuum mechanics approach as well as a lucid presentation of the essential classical contributions. The early chapters give the reader a review of elementary concepts of plasticity, the necessary background material on continuum mechanics, and a discussion of the classical theory of plasticity. Recent developments in the field are then explored in sections on the Mroz Multisurface model, the Dafalias and Popov Two Surface model, the non-linear kinematic hardening model, the endochronic theory of plasticity, and numerous topics in finite deformation plasticity theory and strain space formulation for plastic deformation. Final chapters introduce the fundamentals of the micromechanics of plastic deformation and the analytical coupling between deformation of individual crystals and macroscopic material response of the polycrystal aggregate. For graduate students and researchers in engineering mechanics, mechanical, civil, and aerospace engineering, Continuum Theory of Plasticity offers a modern, comprehensive introduction to the entire subject of plasticity.Customer Reviews:
An open response to your comments.......2000-01-23
All I have to say is this. Please feel free to write your thoughts here on Amazon.com. If you think a review by S.K. Jain is a piece of trash, or a book is good or not good, say so -- this is a free world. A positive review is just as good as a negative one -- both are two sides of one coin. Each helps us understand the coin.
A lucid presentation.......1999-10-24
The book discusses in detail the stress-strain laws of classical plasticity which can be grouped under two headings following Mroz et al.(1991,1996): Single surface plasticity with integral hardening rule and multisurface plasticity with Mroz translation rule. In the first catagory, the book presents the models of perfect plasticity, the isotropic and kinematic hardening models of Prager, Frederick-Armstrong and Chaboche, and the endochronic model. The integral hardening rule with von-Mises yield function is the endochronic theory of Valanis(1980) as presented by Watanabe and Atluri(1986) and is discussed in great detail in this book. Such a presentation has not appeared in any other textbook todate. In the second catagory, the book presents the two surface plasticity model of Dafalias and Popov(1975) and the integrated hardening model of Mroz(1967) at length.
What I like about the book most is its coverage of the concepts of irreversible thermodynamics as they pertain to the theory of plasticity. The book stops short of unifying various models through this framework of thermodynamics.
Finally, please permit me to say, my book on plasticity can be very useful in understanding some very advanced concepts presented in "Continuum Theory of Plasticity." Thank you.

Percolation Theory for Flow in Porous Media (Lecture Notes in Physics)
Allen Hunt Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 3540261109 |
Book Description
The present monograph presents, for the first time, a unified and comprehensive introduction to some of the basic transport properties of porous media, such as electrical and hydraulic conductivity, air permeability and diffusion. The treatment is based on critical path analysis and the scaling of transport properties which are individually described as functions of saturation.
At the same time, the book supplies a tutorial on percolation theory for hydrologists, providing them with the tools for solving actual problems. In turn, a separate chapter serves to introduces physicists to some of the language and complications of groundwater hydrology necessary for succesful modelling.

Advances in Multifield Theories for Continua with Substructure (Modeling and Simulation in Science, Engineering and Technology)
Manufacturer: Birkhäuser Boston ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0817643249 |
Book Description
The current use of complex materials in nanotechnology and industrial engineering has led to a number of intricate problems in mechanics. The macroscopic behavior of such materials often depends critically on their substructures. Multifield theories in continuum mechanics provide the tools for modeling and describing these material substructures, as is emphasized in this book. Indeed multifield theories are an active area of research because of the numerous theoretical and numerical problems emerging in the field.
Written by leading mathematicians and engineers, the chapters feature a broad range of topics that offer both experimental results and clear, detailed answers to fundamental questions about the general formulation of multifield theories. Amid a rich collection of open problems, selected subjects treated include:
* Energetic and geometric properties of elastic-plastic materials
* Poisson structures for complex fluids
* Drag reduction in turbulence due to polymeric substructures
* Topological properties of stresses and defects
* Exact relations for the effective behavior of composites
* Multifield macroscopic modeling of shape memory effects and extended thermodynamics
* Properties of junctions and interfaces
Applied mathematicians, mechanical and structural engineers, material scientists, graduate students, and researchers in the above areas will benefit from this work.

Computational Multiscale Modeling of Fluids and Solids: Theory and Applications
Martin Oliver Steinhauser Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540751165 |
Book Description
The idea of the book is to provide a comprehensive overview of computational physics methods and techniques, that are used for materials modeling on different length and time scales. Each chapter first provides an overview of the physical basic principles which are the basis for the numerical and mathematical modeling on the respective length scale.
The book includes the micro scale, the meso-scale and the macro scale. The chapters follow this classification. The book will explain in detail many tricks of the trade of some of the most important methods and techniques that are used to simulate materials on the perspective levels of spacial and temporal resolution. Case studies are occassionally included to further illustrate some methods or theoretical considerations. Example applications for all techniques are provided, some of which are from the author’s own contributions to some of the research areas. Methods are explained, if possible, on the basis of the original publications but also references to standard text books established in the various fields are mentioned.

Continuum Description of Granular Materials (Advances in Geophysical and Environmental Mechanics)
Sergio H. Faria , Kolumban Hutter , Nina Kirchner , and Yongqi Wang Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540722459 |
Book Description
A thematic introduction to the modern theory of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics is presented from the viewpoint of granular and porous materials. In the approach taken here, granular and porous media are treated as continuous macroscopic systems of which the overall response is significantly influenced and determined by microstructural effects. In the continuum mechanical modeling, those microscale effects are captured by the introduction of so-called internal variables which account for geometric and material inhomogeneities or the multiphase nature of granular mixtures. Describing the evolution of such internal variables by additional balance laws, the resulting continuum-thermodynamical system requires careful analysis, including, e.g. the application of the entropy principle of Müller with the corresponding approach of exploitation as suggested by Liu. The book is self-contained and addresses an interdisciplinary audience including civil and geotechnical engineers, physicists, applied mathematicians, soil mechanicians and continuum mechanicians.

A Geometric Approach to Thermomechanics of Dissipating Continua (Progress in Mathematical Physics)
Lalao Rakotomanana Manufacturer: Birkhäuser Boston ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0817642838 |
Book Description
This monograph focuses on the modeling of continua that exhibit the property of singularities in fields. A rational theory of continuum thermomechanics that takes into account the existence and distribution of scalar and vector discontinuities is presented. Guiding the work is the notion that discontinuities should be modeled by the torsion and curvature tensors (Cartan), thus forming an attractive alternative way of representing dissipating continua with singularities. Also emphasized in this study is the relationship between singularities and certain irreversible properties that occur in solid and fluid models. The required mathematical background is given in several appendices, although some basic understanding of differential geometry and tensor analysis would be helpful. The book is largely self-contained and should serve a readership of graduate students, researchers, and engineers in applied mathematics, mechanics, and physics.Books:
