Book Description

/* 3763L-5, Gilbert, Neil, Dimensions of Social Welfare Policy, 5/e*/ This social welfare policy book provides a comprehensive theoretical framework for the analysis of social welfare policy. The book illustrates theoretical points by offering examples from a cross-section of program areas including income maintenance, child welfare, model cities, day care, community action, and mental health. The book also shows how social theories and individual versus collective value orientations influence policies. For social workers, or students studying social welfare policy.

2 out of 5 stars Much too american for the Canadian Social Worker.......2004-04-12

I purchased this very expensive, yet thin paperback text for a social policy University course. The book is well written, but the perspectives are so American that I question the usefulness for a Canadian student of the subject.

The text is certainly updated, including a lot of glowing statistics about work-for-welfare programmes. The authors also use the words "unwed mother" and "Out of wedlock". These terms were thankfully exiled from the common social work language about 20 years ago, on this side of the border.

Oh yes and let's not forget the glowing stats, for abstinence- only sex education. Don't get me wrong there are lots of perspectives offered in the text but I'm accustomed to social work texts which approach material from a Social Work values perspective, which does not usually give a lot of ink to conservatives.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-01-08

Given the history of this book, it is almost a classic. No course on Welfare policy could not refer to it.

5 out of 5 stars On of the best introductions to social work policy ever........1997-09-11

This is an excellent book. I've used it in undergraduate (and graduate) courses here at the University of Chicago and have been VERY pleased with the result. Colleagues at Berkeley (where Professors Terrell and Gilbert teach) use it as well. It is quite possibly the most complete text on the subject I've ever used

5 out of 5 stars Good Review Text on Rat-Choice Politics and Public Choice.......2003-05-22

This is a great book! As a political-science graduate student I've been exposed to a great deal of game-theory and rat-choice in my seminar classes, but, unfortunately, it has come in the form of numerous papers, piles of books, and several classes that did not build off of one another. I was left with the feeling that it was a very, very important subject, but it was presented in a manner that left me, as a student, with an incomplete picture of the topic and the breadth of work that has gone on in this field.

Mueller's achievements in this volume have been three:

1. Coherent presentation of the theory of public choice / rational politics.

2. Discussion of the most important empirical work that has gone on in this field in a unified fashion that leads one naturally into further inquiry in this area.

3. Logically organizes and presents the material in a way that reinforces concepts, logic, and thinking in the book.

These three things make this book a great review or introductory text to the field of public choice / rational politics that should be on the "must have" list of every serious student of politics and economics. Moreover, not being terribly skilled at mathematics myself, the material is presented both through intuitive written discussions, fairly simplistic "example" equations that are pretty easy to follow if you've had a "principles" microecon course with calculus, and, which I greatly appreciate, a fair amount of graphs. Moreover, the bibliography that the book draws on is very, very extensive...meaning that it has the additional utility of being a handy jumping off point if you're doing research in this area.

My only complaint, and this is a minor one, is that I would like a bit more math in the book either at the end of each chapter or in an appendix that works out, step-by-step, some of the additional concepts he runs over that aren't dealt with mathematically in the main text of the chapters themselves.

This, at least in my opinion, is an excellent book for the graduate student interested in learning about public choice / rational politics.

5 out of 5 stars A very eye opening read.......2005-12-20

I picked up this book mostly out of curiosity. I was curious about small choices I could make that could make a difference. I went to school and I have a degree in environmental science, but I never applied it in my work. I have always tried to make good informed choices as a consumer. As I feel while I can not change the world, but as a block on informed consumers together we can make kinder choices for our environment.

I liked that this book is broken down into sections that apply to all ages. Home and Garden, Fashion and Beauty, Food and Entertaining, Recreation and Vacations, Animals in the Home, Children and Family, Business and Education, Health, Volunteering and Getting active. So you can see the topics that go well with all members in a family.

She gives very practical suggestions substitutes for products that we currently use. She gives recipes for replacements that are harder on the environment. She gives tips on how to keep your pets happy and content. I liked that she gave a wealth of ideas and substitutions for things we currently do. Some books give one suggestion that isn't always workable. I feel that through reading this book that I can make better and informed decisions as a consumer.

    4 out of 5 stars New insight.......2005-09-24

I have been a vegetarian all my life and have stopped using animal products (tested or material) for a decade or more. And still this book gave me ideas about plenty of more things to do to make my commitment more valuable to earth and me. One of the few 'How to' books that actually gets you started. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering becoming animal and earth friendly in their daily lives. I would also recommend Karen Logan's Clean House, Clean Planet for the people who are specifically looking for eco-friendly non-toxic house keeping tips

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2005-08-22

My roommate bought me a copy of this book and it's really opened my eyes! Although I've been vegan for several years I didn't realize how much more I could be doing to help the world around me by making smarter choices. It's not only inspiring but a great resource book as well.

2 out of 5 stars Some interesting info, but destined to be obsolete soon.......2005-05-06

This book shrugs off all shrill rhetoric and provides many resources for animal-free products and animal-friendly services. Where it falls short is in its reliance on pointing out particular companies and services rather than being prescriptive. While interest in green products is on the rise, its still a business model that has more risk than average. In short, there's a good chance that many of these companies will close up shop. A better approach would have been to spend more time on how consumers can evaluate products and services. What are the best-in-class standards PETA expects? A good first effort for tone, but I will wait for the next edition in hopes that it will have more than a list of references.

    5 out of 5 stars very good..........2005-05-05

this ingrid just might recieve a peace prize/award with this book. every base imaginable in the, 'animal friendly' vien's beautifully covered here.

      Book Description

Dreams of pregnancy include the expectation that nine months of waiting will end with a joyous event. But, each year, a "shattered dream" occurs for thousands of couples who receive the news that their child will have a disabling condition severe enough that they may question if they are the best parents for their child. Societal expectation is that parents will raise their child or, if the condition of the child is detected prenatally, abortion is offered as an alternative. Parents who explore other options face scrutiny and, sometimes, condemnation--"lonely choices." Joanne Finnegan shares her personal experience and that of several families she interviewed who, like herself, explored options other than raising their child with a disability. Parents express with candor the overwhelming pain they felt when receiving "the news," the frustration when searching for options, the "no-win" feeling of decision making, the resolve with a final decision, and finally, life after the decision. Parent quotes also address issues such as spiritual dilemmas and interactions with friends, family, their other children, and medical professionals. Words of advice for new parents include how to build support systems and gather information, how to search for an adoptive family, and arranging the details of communication between adoptive and birth parents. Interviews with adoptive parents, poetry, and extensive resource lists complete the book. Written as a gift for other parents to help them cope with the pain and loneliness of decision making, this book will also be a valuable resource for medical professionals, adoption and social workers, counselors and spiritual advisors, and friends and family of the parents. It is a helpful as well as a deeply therapeutic book, providing a strong lesson in how to manage during this stressful time, from receiving "the news" about the baby's condition and prognosis, to weighing the factors involved in the various decisions. Should one take the baby home from the hospital? If not home, then where? Foster care, respite care, guardianship, and other forms of substitute care are mentioned. The author also examines decisions about finances and support services, family issues, finalizing an adoption plan, living with the decision, regrets, and future pregnancies.

          Book Description

Based on the key idea that social protection in a modern economy, both inside and outside the state, can be understood as protection of specific investments in human capital, Torben Iversen offers a systematic explanation of popular preferences for redistributive spending, the economic role of political parties and electoral systems, and labor market stratification (including gender inequality). Contrary to the popular idea that competition in the global economy undermines international differences in the level of social protection, Iversen argues that these differences are actually made possible by a high international division of labor.

In August 2003, North Carolina became the first U.S. state to offer restitution to victims of state-ordered sterilizations carried out by its eugenics program between 1929 and 1975. The decision was prompted by newspaper stories based on the research of Johanna Schoen, who was granted unique access to summaries of 7,500 case histories and the papers of the North Carolina Eugenics Board.

In this book, Schoen situates the state's reproductive politics in a national and global context. Widening her focus to include birth control, sterilization, and abortion policies across the nation, she demonstrates how each method for limiting unwanted pregnancies had the potential both to expand and to limit women's reproductive choices. Such programs overwhelmingly targeted poor and nonwhite populations, yet they also extended a measure of reproductive control to poor women that was previously out of reach.

On an international level, the United States has influenced reproductive health policies by, for example, tying foreign aid to the recipients' compliance with U.S. notions about family planning. The availability of U.S.-funded family planning aid has proved to be a double-edged sword, offering unprecedented opportunities to poor women while subjecting foreign patients to medical experimentation that would be considered unacceptable at home.

Drawing on the voices of health and science professionals, civic benefactors, and the women themselves, Schoen's study allows deeper understandings of the modern welfare state and the lives of American women.
