2 out of 5 stars Not Helpful - Except as a Footstool.......2007-01-11

I purchased this book for the first part of my Biomechanics class. We raced through the first 10 chapters, and each one was very difficult to understand. Fung skips steps in his derivations which, for an undergraduate, made studying more confusing and time consuming.

Probably the most frustrating part (at least for an engineering student) of the text is that none of the equations (except the ones from Chapter 1) are applied to anything. Not even for the problems at the end of each chapter. The book is just a long list of mathematical derivations regarding hypothetical blobs, I mean "bodies of mass", in space.

In summary, I wish this book had a lot more examples pertaining to applying all the equations written in this book. Perhaps application of these equations will be used in the second part of my Biomechanics class, where we use yet another Fung book. I hope so.

2 out of 5 stars Not good for me.......2005-03-08

I am the matematican and I had to start learning C.M. from this book. And I didn't like it. First chapter is some very simplified approach to linear elasticity, but it doesn't developed any intuition and reading it was waste of time. Stretch tensor was introduced with avoided notion of polar decomposition. This presentation was far less intuitive for me. The linear algerbra behind primal stresses is described and computed in details, but nowadays the student involved in computer methods and engineering must know this things in my opinion. And the language is not instuitive: me, matematican, couldn't do most of exercises after reading chapter they relate to. It tasted like old-fashioned book.

5 out of 5 stars What a great reference book.......2000-07-05

I thought that this book was a great reference source and it has come in handy for me many times. I would be willing to buy it if I could find a copy, unfortunately it is out of stock, so I will have to return to the library every time I need it.

2 out of 5 stars The opinion of mathematican.......2005-03-08

I must confess I am the mathematican and I started to learn from this book. But my questions to you, experts of C. M., arise:
i) Is it good to speak about strech tensor and avoid using polar decomposition?
ii) Is it worth to describe and compute spectral decomposition in 3D case in details while speaking about principal stresses? And assume that the modern student of engineering doesn't know this part of linear algebra?
I couldn't do most of excesirses at the end of the chapter after reading it, so it was not good self-study book, at least for me. It tasted like old-fashioned book.

5 out of 5 stars Good books but "out-of-print".......1997-11-03

Foundation of Solid Mechanics and the First Course of Continuum Mechanics by Professor Fung are listed as "unavailable" and "out-of-print". This is quite a bummer! Why are the publishers being so insensitive to the needs of the readers? The mentioned books are great reference books. Many of whom I've talked to said they would want to purchase their own copies instead of fighting over the books at the library. Get with it, publishers!

Book Description

The subject of turbulence, the most forbidding in fluid dynamics, has usually proved treacherous to the beginner, caught in the whirls and eddies of its nonlinearities and statistical imponderables. This is the first book specifically designed to offer the student a smooth transitionary course between elementary fluid dynamics (which gives only last-minute attention to turbulence) and the professional literature on turbulent flow, where an advanced viewpoint is assumed.

Moreover, the text has been developed for students, engineers, and scientists with different technical backgrounds and interests. Almost all flows, natural and man-made, are turbulent. Thus the subject is the concern of geophysical and environmental scientists (in dealing with atmospheric jet streams, ocean currents, and the flow of rivers, for example), of astrophysicists (in studying the photospheres of the sun and stars or mapping gaseous nebulae), and of engineers (in calculating pipe flows, jets, or wakes). Many such examples are discussed in the book.

The approach taken avoids the difficulties of advanced mathematical development on the one side and the morass of experimental detail and empirical data on the other. As a result of following its midstream course, the text gives the student a physical understanding of the subject and deepens his intuitive insight into those problems that cannot now be rigorously solved.

In particular, dimensional analysis is used extensively in dealing with those problems whose exact solution is mathematically elusive. Dimensional reasoning, scale arguments, and similarity rules are introduced at the beginning and are applied throughout.

A discussion of Reynolds stress and the kinetic theory of gases provides the contrast needed to put mixing-length theory into proper perspective: the authors present a thorough comparison between the mixing-length models and dimensional analysis of shear flows. This is followed by an extensive treatment of vorticity dynamics, including vortex stretching and vorticity budgets.

Two chapters are devoted to boundary-free shear flows and well-bounded turbulent shear flows. The examples presented include wakes, jets, shear layers, thermal plumes, atmospheric boundary layers, pipe and channel flow, and boundary layers in pressure gradients.

The spatial structure of turbulent flow has been the subject of analysis in the book up to this point, at which a compact but thorough introduction to statistical methods is given. This prepares the reader to understand the stochastic and spectral structure of turbulence. The remainder of the book consists of applications of the statistical approach to the study of turbulent transport (including diffusion and mixing) and turbulent spectra.

3 out of 5 stars A First Course in Turbulence.......2006-09-16

This book is a "classic" in the field of turbulence. However, I cannot recommend it to anyone who is not a collector. The content is not particularly useful to the fluids engineer who must deal with practical issues of turbulent flow. Nor is this book the best reference for a PhD student or research scientist who must dig into the details. A much better choice for any reader in fluid dynamics is the the book on Turbulent Flow by Pope.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-08-05

Although it was my first book about turbulence, It was very easy to read.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and refreshingly brief discussion of turbulence.......2001-11-22

This book ranks among the classics for people who actually work with turbulent flows. It is a brief but well composed discussion of many of the most fundamental concepts describing turbulence. It is approachable and accurate. It is slightly dated and does not provide as many modeling details as would be useful, but it is excellent as a conceptual discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Subject of Turbulence.......2001-10-31

This book is an excellent introduction to the subject of turbulence for any newcomer in the field. The book is focus on the true heart of turbulence with the emphasis on the physical insight. Justified by physical simplification, the scaling argument/similarity methods are basic tools to solve turbulence problem in the book. The solution from such methods give you the impression of the key physical mechanism behinds turbulent flows and hence the better understanding of the flows. Follow the way authors solve the problem closely, you will know how to do a hand combat with a real world turbulence problem.

The book requires only a knowledge of basic calculus as well as tensor notation. You only need a simple tensor operation. There is no requirement of statistical/stochastic tool knowledge. You can start this book right after you finish reading a advance fluid mechanics book e.g. Batchelor(1967), Panton(1996) and White(1991).

With my long experience in turbulence subject, I would say if I have to choose only one book for general purpose, I will defintely have "A First Course in Turbulence by Tennekes and Lumley". I have been reading the book more than 3--4 times but I find the book never ceases to give me a new insight of turbulence everytime I read.

Nonetheless, if you are looking for the bible of turbulence. I really mean the bible. You might consider having "Statistical Fluid Mechanics Vol 1 and 2 by Monin and Yaglom".

3 out of 5 stars Introductory level textbook.......2000-09-04

A good basic textbook about turbulent fluid flows, recommended for undergraduate and early graduate students. Not a high-level reference (should look at Hinze's for that) and a few topics, ideas, etc. are somewhat outdated now.

This book was used in my fluids class and was no help at all. The explanations are unclear and confusing, and there are very few examples. This book does not make a good class text or reference text. Do not buy this book. If you are an undergrad then buy Fluid Mechanics by Young et al. or Crowe et al., or if you want more buy Viscous Fluid Flow by White.

There were many printing and typo errors (the top few lines on many pages were lost),and the quality of explanations in the textbook is disappointing for a group of authors from a supposedly distinguished university. Wanted to sell the book to recoup my loss but there was no market for it. Doesn't that speak volumes about this book?

I would not recommend this book for any introductory fluid mechanics course because there are a lot of derivation steps as well as background information assumed by the author.

This is more of a mathematical approach to fluid mechanics as opposed to the more classical engineering approach.

The book provides quite a well rounded basis, with good diagrams, but some of his calculation methods are a little hard to follow. I much much preferred Orbital Motion by A.E. Roy. It depends though on how you are used to seeing the formulas. I know some people find this book much easier.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful insight on Kepler's laws of planetary orbits!.......1998-12-28

I found this text one Saturday afternoon while shopping at a university bookstore in Denver. I am a candidate for the M.S. degree in astronomyand physics and doing my thesis on Johannes Kepler and his three laws of planetary motion. While browsing through the physics section, I saw this text right in front of me. I spent the next half-hour thumbing through the pages. I purchased it, and I'm using it for part of my thesis. I also am part-time faculty at a unversity in the Denver area. I have shared this wonderful text with students and other faculty members. There are full explanations of orbits, detailed drawings, equations, and sample problems. Orbits include those of planets, moons, man-made satellites, asteroids and comets. I find it an enjoyable book for all that are interested in astronmony from the junior high student through a professional in the field.

          Book Description

How can the drag coefficient of a car be reduced? What factors govern the variation in the shape of the Earth’s magnetosphere? What is the basis of weather prediction? These are examples of problems that can only be tackled with a sound knowledge of the principles and methods of fluid dynamics. This important discipline has applications which range from the study of the large-scale properties of the galaxies to the design of high precision engineering components. This book introduces the subject of fluid dynamics from the first principles. The first eleven chapters cover all the basic ideas of fluid mechanics, explaining carefully the modelling and mathematics needed. The last six chapters illustrate applications of this material to linearised sound and water waves, to high speed flow of air, to non-linear water waves on channels, and to aerofoil theory. Over 350 diagrams have been used to illustrate key points. Exercises are included to help develop and reinforce the reader’s understanding of the material presented. References at the ends of each chapter serve not only to guide readers to more detailed texts, but also list where alternative descriptions of the salient points in the chapter may be found. This book is an undergraduate text for second or third year students of mathematics or mathematical physics, who are taking a first course in fluid dynamics.
