4 out of 5 stars award-winning author.......2000-08-07

Wolman won a medal in 2000 from the American Geophysical Union, and in the citation they said, "although written 35 years ago, it remains one of the most cited works in geopmorphology and was recently republished by Dover, not as a historical artifact but as required reading for the newest generation of fluvial geomorphologists. Brimming with clarity and literacy... a good bedtime read." (well... at least for those who want to understand stream morphology.)

4 out of 5 stars The classic of stream geomorphology.......1999-01-28

This book forms one of the foundations of the field of stream geomorphology from one of the founding fathers. I would recommend it as the basic text for someone serious about learning about fluvial geomorphology. Considerable work has been added to the field since Dr. Leopold's book was first published in 1964 but this forms a very good synthesis of a complex subject. As a civil engineer/geomorphologist, I have referred to this book many times over the past 25 years since I was one of his students at Berkeley. A great value in paperback.

Book Description

This is a completely revised and updated edition of David Knighton's River Forms and Processes. Looking at the wide range of forms developed by natural rivers and the processes responsible for that development, the book combines empirical and theoretical approaches, and provides a critical assessment of the many schools of thought which have emerged for dealing with adjustment in the fluvial system. It is fully illustrated throughout by a superb range of figures, photographs and tables.

4 out of 5 stars Good text on fluvial processes........2005-12-11

This text is very informative and I really didn't appreciate it when I took my first fluvial geomorphology course. However as I became more acquanited with hydrology and environmental engineering, I also gained a better appreciation for this text. In my opinion, it is written for upper level undergrad and grad students because they will most likley get more from the text.

Book Description

California Rivers and Streams provides a clear and informative overview of the physical and biological processes that shape California's rivers and watersheds. Jeffrey Mount introduces relevant basic principles of hydrology and geomorphology and applies them to an understanding of the differences in character of the state's many rivers. He then builds on this foundation by evaluating the impact on waterways of different land use practices--logging, mining, agriculture, flood control, urbanization, and water supply development.
Water may be one of California's most valuable resources, but it is far from being one we control. In spite of channels, levees, lines and dams, the state's rivers still frequently flood, with devastating results. Almost all the rivers in California are dammed or diverted; with the booming population, there will be pressure for more intervention.
Mount argues that Californians know little about how their rivers work and, more importantly, how and why land-use practices impact rivers. The forceful reconfiguration and redistribution of the rivers has already brought the state to a critical crossroads. California Rivers and Streams forces us to reevaluate our use of the state's rivers and offers a foundation for participating in the heated debates about their future.

This book will answer any questions you have and then answer all the questions you are too dense to think of. Anyone living in California should be forced to read this. River runners also benefit from this book that shows the correct fleuvial processes, unlike many kayaking/rafting books. Read it, get on the water and then fight for the rivers!

5 out of 5 stars Great review of how rivers work with a sense of humor.......1999-04-27

This is a subperb review of how rivers systems work and how man-made changes effect these systems. Perfect for the interested layperson interested in earth science. The second half of this book covers the major watersheds of California.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on how rivers work, not just for California........1999-03-26

I am a hydrologist and a water lawyer practicing in Washington DC -- this is the book I give to clients and friends to explain how rivers work and what people do to them. It assumes an intelligent reader but no background is required to get the main points. While its title and focus is California, the lessons are applicable throughout the country. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the layman interested rivers & the environment.......1999-03-03

This book is perfect for the layperson interested in rivers as part of the world around us. Explains the mechanics of how rivers work and how they shape the environment around. Describes how and why rivers don't do what we want them to, even when we spend millions on extensive diversions and flood control. Jeff Mounts great sense of humor makes the subject alive and interesting what is often presented as dry and acedemic.

    Book Description

Since the initial publication in 1988 of Fluvial Processes in Dryland Rivers, the book was and is foundational in synthesizing river processes and forms in drylands - the semiarid, arid and extremely arid portions of the earth's surface. It describes the present understanding of dryland rivers, using a theoretical framework with examples and results of research from many areas of the world. The most important feature of the book is that it presents the first organized review of knowledge about dryland rivers. Information on practical management and planning is also included. The book is unique in that it stresses the philosophical and methodological aspects of geomorphologic research, rather than merely reporting results. Scientists use the book as a review of the literature and as a review of the intellectual development of the field. Planners and decision makers in dryland regions use the book as an entry to the science of geomorphology as applied to dryland environments. "Will Graf's Fluvial Processes in Dryland Rivers is a classic. It is well-conceived, comprehensive, theoretical, yet practical, and deals well with both form and process. Few environmental problems in drylands are independent of fluvial processes and climatic variations, agriculture, increasing urbanization, and water demands have all put new strains on streams. The unavailability of Graf's book over the past decade has been problematic to environmental analysts of all types, but especially to hydrologists and fluvial geomorphologists engaged not only in fluvial analysis, but also in fluvial restoration. Thus, the reprinting of this book at a modest price is especially welcome." Dr. Stanley W. Trimble, Professor, Geography Department, UCLA Fluvial Processes in Dryland Rivers, while out of print for a period of time, is certainly not out of date. It remains the seminal overview of the complex dynamics of rivers in drylands. The republication of this book by Blackburn Press is a welcome development. The volume is an essential read for all fluvial geomorphologists and for all geomorphologists interested in drylands. In this book, William Graf shows how many of the concepts developed for rivers in humid-temperate environments (e.g., hydraulic geometry, dominant discharge, magnitude-frequency relations) must be fundamentally reconsidered to understand the processes and forms associated with dryland rivers. By summarizing a perspective that challenges the universality of traditional "equilibrium" conceptions of river dynamics, Fluvial Processes in Dryland Rivers not only has important theoretical content, but also provides information relevant to the science of river management and restoration, which currently (over?)emphasizes equilibrium conceptions of river adjustment. Dr. Bruce L. Rhoads, Professor and Head, Department of Geography, University of Illinois William L. Graf is Educational Foundation University Professor and Professor of Geography at the University of South Carolina. His specialties include fluvial geomorphology and policy for public land and water, with emphasis on river channel change, human impacts on river processes and morphology, contaminant transport and storage in river sediments, and the downstream impacts of large dams. Much of his work has focused on dryland rivers. He has served as an officer in the Geological Society of America, and is Past President of the Association of American Geographers. In the area of public policy, he has emphasized the interaction of science and decision-making, and resolution of the conflict between economic development and environmental preservation. He has published 124 papers, articles, book chapters, and reports on geomorphology, riparian ecology, river management, and the interaction between science and public policy.

5 out of 5 stars Fluvial Processes in River Engineering.......2000-03-24

Fluvial Processes in River Engineering starts with a broad view of geomorphology as applied to river engineering.

Next is background of the application of engineering parameters for the understanding of river channel processes. One of our professional engineers used this book for his Sediment Transport class at UNM. He felt it did a great job of presenting the various sediment transport equations in use today. The equations are presented logically and are grouped as to type of result obtained, e.g. suspended load, bed load and total bed material load.

Then mathematical modelling of river change is detailed. The FLUVIAL model of four-dimensions (x, y, z, and t), including evaluations of channel width adjustment is fully explained.

Another of our professional engineers has had and used this book since before its first publication. She still enjoys picking it up and reading it because it is well illustrated and very well written.

    Book Description

Developments in the modelling of sediment transport in rivers and the interactions with the river-bed have been remarkable over the last two decades. This progress has increased the understanding of the nature of turbulence, and the ability to replicate mathematically simple flow-particle interactions which can be observed experimentally. In addition, quite elegant models of stratigraphic complexes have evolved because of the growing computational power available to scientists. As always, additional knowledge has raised even more intriguing questions and the quest for explanation of phenomena has led to increased specialisation. Therefore, there are few fluid dynamicists or sedimentologists who can successfully span the two disciplines. The intention of this book is to assist various specialists on keeping abreast of current developments in related areas. The book initially focuses on hydrodynamics of turbulent flow, followed by basic two and three-dimensional flow through straight and curved channels and the flow over bed topography. This is then followed by a consideration of initial motion, sediment transport and particle sorting. The potential for modelling fluidsediment interactions is provided at the end of the first section. Linking chapters then follow, considering the preservation potential of fluvial bedforms in the stratigraphic record and the basic variety of channel morphology recognised in sedimentary studies. Subsequent chapters consider reconstructing hydraulic process and fluvial morphology from stratigraphy; the influence of bedform and depositional controls on packing of economically important sedimentary rocks; and recent advances in modelling subsurface fluvial stratigraphy. A final chapter provides a brief view of future perspectives. The objective of this volume is to review recent advances made by geologists and hydrodynamicists in an accessible manner and to promote an increased and fruitful dialogue between sedimentary geologists, geomorphologists and hydrodynamicists.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Sediment Compilations Available.......2007-05-31

After the fourth time I chased a promising reference into the library and emerged with this book I knew it was something special. Carling and Dawson put together a very good compilation that remains compelling a decade later. Best was the appropriate (must...resist...obvious...pun) choice to review the flurry of recent developments in bedform mechanics. His 60 page overview is itself worth checking this book out as it is accessible, comprehensive and up to date. Whiting's chapter on mixing was a welcome surprise as he detailed the wide range of processes responsible for bed sorting unlike anything otherwise compiled. Kelsey's overview of modeling is very different the one I would write as it is sweeping in scope and broad in its review of approaches. But it is generally interesting and provides the best synthesis of active layer approaches I found when recently doing some work on the topic. Each of the other bed mechanics papers are worthwhile. Coming from the geologic perspective the text also includes several stratigraphy papers that are outside of my interest or ability to evaluate. However, if the reach the level of applicability of the bed mechanics paper they are highly recommended.
