Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Even though Index is not that great like CERM (Civil Engineering Reference Manual, you can still find valuable examples and basic concepts that PE Exam requires.

Best of Luck.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2000-11-18

I found Mr. McCarthy's book to be a valuable resource. From a geologist's perspective, it was of great help in bridging the gap between engineering geology and geotechnical engineering. It gave me greater insight into not only field technique, but also into geologic considerations that are of importance in foundation design. The text was both concise and clearly written.

3 out of 5 stars From a Civil/Geological Engineering student's view..........2000-05-03

* Poor index - no detail * Good detail in text on subjects covered * Has some errors in the chapter on flownets * Disjointed in discussion of compaction * Good for students with little to no soil mechanics background

Book Description

“In this updated and expanded edition of her excellent telecommunications primer, Lili explains in just the right detail everything you need to know to become fluent in this most important and fascinating industry. Besides including a satisfying amount of expert technical detail, the book also discusses equally crucial aspects of how communications technology affects society, culture, and politics. Electronic communications is changing the world for the better; learn from Lili’s expertise how you, too, can participate in the revolution.”
—Steve Riley, senior security strategist, Microsoft Corporation
“The book you hold in your hand is a rarity. In more than thirty years of teaching, administration, and research in telecommunications, I have never found a single book that could serve these diverse areas. The search is over. Telecommunications Essentials is best-of-breed in telecommunications publishing and represents the most thorough, comprehensive, and forward-looking resource to date. Both student and practitioner alike will find the unique blend of introductory and advanced material a ‘one-stop-shop.’ If it was a movie, this book would receive two thumbs up!”
—Dr. Art St. George, manager of advanced technologies, University of New Mexico
“Telecommunications Essentials should be on the shelf of every professional working in voice and data networking. It is the first place I go when I need to look up something that I am unsure of or when I encounter a new or unfamiliar term. I have been using Telecommunications Essentials now for two years as the course text for business technology students taking Introduction to Telecommunications. My course covers the entire book and the students end up with a practical knowledge base of the components, technologies, and connectivity that make today’s networks work. This new edition is most welcome since it includes new advances in the areas of fiber optics, wireless, Voice over IP, and broadband technologies that have emerged since the publication of the first edition. This new edition will replace my well-worn copy of my first edition of Telecommunications Essentials, which has served me well so far.”
—Robert Hudyma, professor of business, Ryerson University
“This is an excellent reference book on telecommunications. It’s up-to-date on the latest technology, it’s comprehensive, and most of all, it’s easy to read and understand. Lili has the rare ability to explain very complex subjects well. If you need a good reference book on telecommunications, I would start with this.”
—To Chee Eng, research director, communications, Gartner

—Dr. Tibro Gyires, professor, Illinois State University, School of Information Technology
“When Lili published her first edition of Telecommunications Essentials, I was a consultant in the communications field. Her guide was the only one I used to keep current. Now I’m in different field altogether but I need to understand this highly extensive field. Telecommunications Essentials is comprehensive, user-friendly, insightful, and fun. It’s the only resource to have if you want to know telecom.”
—Dave Feldman, consul, trade and investment, British Embassy
“After four decades of working in the computer and telecommunications fields, and more than twenty years of teaching graduate-level courses in telecommunications and network management at four universities, I finally have a book that meets the needs of students who are working to gain an in-depth and comprehensive grasp of an ever-changing field. Lili Goleniewski wrote that book. Her second edition is an outstanding contribution to the field and will be the best teaching aid I have ever had. If you teach you should use this book. If you want to really learn about telecommunications and data networks you should insist that your school adopt the book as a text.”
—Michael Erbschloe, consultant, author, and educator
“Telecommunications is not just about the legacy telephone network or the evolving wireless networks or the rapidly expanding Internet. It is about all of these and much more. It requires years of expertise in this fascinating field, combined with skillful writing ability, to develop a book that presents in an interesting and insightful manner the multifaceted disciplines of telecommunications. Lillian Goleniewski has accomplished this immense task with great skill in her book Telecommunications Essentials. Beginning students and professionals alike will benefit from this book. Congratulations to the author on a task well done!”
—Dr. Seshadri Mohan, chair and professor, Systems Engineering Department, University of Arkansas at Little Rock
“Telecommunications Essentials is a brilliant book for a broad and in-depth picture of the nitty-gritty aspects of telecommunications. Lili has a way of explaining complicated topics very well. It is a must-have book for any person who works in the IT world.”
—Lino Alberts, department manager technology operations, RBTT Bank Aruba N.V.
“A truly amazing book. A ‘must-have’ for anyone who wants to know the basics of telecommunication, how it works, and where the industry is heading. This book is excellent for all audiences—from novice to expert. Lili has successfully broken down the complexity of telecommunication so it can be easily understood.”
—Mohd Radzi b. Mohd Yusoff, senior manager, MSC Technology Centre, Sdn Bhd, Malaysia
“Telecommication Essentials describes the most technical elements of the subject in layperson’s terms, while remaining engaging for those with greater understanding. In providing the link between the most complex of telecommunications technology and its most simple applications, both now and in the future, Telecommunication Essentials is the most readable book on the subject both for newcomers and for ‘old hands.’ Lili exudes enthusiasm throughout, providing a vision for the future that draws the reader in.”
—Neil Juggins, head of research, Evolution Securities China
“One of the great challenges facing those responsible for setting public policy or regulation associated with the converging technologies of telecommunications, IT, and media is that before the ‘ink is dry’ on their pronouncements, advancements in the underlying science and technology has often made the ‘new’ policy, laws, and regulation out-of-date or irrelevant. While Lili does not claim to predict the future in her second edition of Telecommunications Essentials, she takes what is to many ‘Rocket Science’ and delivers it up in ways that those responsible for protecting the ‘public good’ and maintaining more competitive communications marketplaces can easily understand. Lili is one of the few telecommunications educators out there, catering to a diverse a reader base, who has been keeping up with Moore’s Law and what it really means in the real world of telecommunications. She continues to maintain her technological neutrality, never attempting to ‘sell’ a particular flavor-of-the-year with regard to who is the ‘best’ at delivering ‘what’ to ‘whom,’ nor falling into a mumbo-jumbo mantra of which national regulatory authority has invented the best-of-the-best new legal regime, something sorely needed by those needing a bias free technology primer.”
—Thom Ramsey, partner, Squire, Sanders & Dempsey (Brussels & Washington, D.C) and former Deputy United States Coordinator for International Communications and Information Policy, U.S. Department of State

5 out of 5 stars It is what it says it is.......2007-03-20

As an electronic engineer and graduate student, I found the book to be very comprehensive in discussing various emerging and present telecommunication technologies. The book would describe quite accurately the technology without bogging you down with unnecessary details. It manages to be brief while still providing valuable data for the telecommunications professional, and broad enough to cover a wide spectrum (no pun intended) of material. And most importantly, it isn't a bore to read.
I recommend this to anyone seeking a basic to intermediate knowledge of a broad array of telecommunciations concepts and applications.

5 out of 5 stars The Best and Most Readable Book on Telecom.......2007-03-16

I have to hand it to the authors, Lillian Goleniewski and Kitty Jarrett, for producing hands-down the most readable and comprehensive book out there on Telecom. I have had to slog through some of the worst writing to study this subject, and it was a breath of fresh air to crack this one open and start reading.

The authors cover every aspect of the field in great depth, and in such clear language that both the expert and the novice can benefit from this book. This will be required reading for all of my students, and I highly recommend other professors in the Telecom field to follow suit.

Well done!

5 out of 5 stars Balanced explanation on telecomm technology and industry (business) trends.......2006-12-12

Firstly, I am a strong fan of Ms. Lili. I have personally met the author during a 3-day seminar during my PETRONAS days back in 1994. At that time, I was attending what the best telecomm training course the market can offer as well worth its price.

WHY WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND TELECOMM PROPERLY:

Compared to other training courses, Ms Lili was about 2x-3x times more expensive but what is that to an oil-and-gas company where network downtime to a gas-compressing subsidiary can cost around RM100,000 an hour (1994 exchange of RM2.50@US$1) equivalent to US$40,000.

At that time, IT Support has to figure out how to support a heterogeneous mix of one IBM 3745 mainframe, few UNIX boxes, tens of Novell 2.x servers. Several network protocols ran inside the various pipes/lines such as SNA, TCP-IP and MS Netbeui, and my pet project OS/2 NetBIOS, and Novell SPX. Most network segments are on Ethernet, and a couple are on Token-Ring.

Needless to say, troubleshooting network traffic particularly eliminating "jabbers chipping echoes etc" was to put it mildly a "challenge." One of the fire-fighting effort required bringing in a US consultant with a pony-tail using Data-General "Sniffer" equipment!

For IT Support to figure out how to support the big project at that time, mainly getting SAP gateways remaining up, we need to understand what it was we were having, as well as understand how the newer telecomm technologies are going to do to the overall picture.

At that time, we have the whole possible mix of telecomm devices such fixed leased lines, dial-up backup, and few sprinklings of VSAT and wireless. Of course you cannot learn all that in a 3-day class. And I don't think I learn that at school too. What I learned became obsolete after I graduated !

WHY WE NEED THIS BOOK:

This is where this book comes in. To provide good IT support, so that users would not pester Helpdesk folks, we need really good technical references. Of course, we need that initial mind-enlightening class to understand the "big-picture." The details you can get that free easily off the web nowadays; understand how the big picture works is will make it easier for us to understand the complex details.

WHAT THIS BOOK COVER:

Covered the whole range of Telecom technologies ranging from basic stuff such as circuits and channels to transmission type such as analog vs digital. The book then cover the traditional media such as twisted-pair, coax, fibre and telecomm devices such as microwave and satellite.

The depth of technical details amazes me to have everything in one book covering IP protocols, ports, and Quality of Service. Main trends are covered such as optical networking, broadband and wireless for both LAN, and WANs..

I really like Lily's supplementary notes on the various indicators on industry adaption of specific technologies as well as their technological history. Basically if you need to know something on Telecomms, there will be some pages on that topic here. .

COMPARED TO 1sT EDITION:

Compared to the 1st edition, this is thicker by a double! We have a whopping 865 pages, although still much less than Yellow Pages

In the 2nd edition, I realized the author has diligently tracked the technology updates which is what most people wanted.

WISH LIST FOR NEWER EDITION OR NEW BOOK ALTOGETHER:

Since I am now into management consulting for E-Government and E-Commerce, some discussion on cost structure for would be VERY ATTRACTIVE especially to decision-makers in developing countries with low phone/network penetration.

I believe if I am all powerful African president wanting to have my own mobile telecoms company, I would want to have a reference that will give some estimates on trenching cost, and base-station costs. That will surely help my nephew who is going to be the CEO of that company some idea of what sort of loan and spending that has to be incurred. Farfetched ? Well this is a wish-list!

TELECOMMS MUST BE A PART OF YOUR COMPANY IT STRATEGIC PLAN:

Overall for techies out there, recognizing important trends in the telco industry is VERY VERY important for your corporate management. Having a feel of where everybody is going is critical to their Telecommunications Infra roadmap. This is where this book come into value.

The Telecomms Infrastructure road map will determine what decisions are required for infrastructure procurement, leasing or investment. Thus, the Telecomm chapter is an important part of a company IT Strategic Plan (ISP).

Subsequently, this ISP will exist if senior management is really serious to get their brilliant and precious Business Strategic Plan up and running. Unless if the company is just SOHO with only 1-2 computers and they pass files using flash-disks! Otherwise the senior management is just talking.

3 out of 5 stars A Cost-effective Path to Basic Telecom Knowledge.......2006-08-11

The book does what it sets out to do - cover the basic underpinnings of modern telecom. Its' age (a scant three years) shows a bit here and there (some of the material obviously predating the book), but for the most part it is accurate and relevant. It is not a technical document, as 600 pages would not be enough to cover the component technology. It mentions occasionally the regulatory issues in telecom, but only in passing; its' primary focus is on business. It makes a good book for the student or someone interested in a telecom career. I might also recommend it to someone whose future plans include sitting through a telecom sales pitch or taking a meeting with telecom lobbyists (at least the part where they might drag in an engineer to talk about some cool new technology).

When I say it has a business focus, I mean that it tries to explain the pros and cons of a particular technology in terms of cost, complexity, and ability to satisfy customer needs. Applying the same criteria, I would say the author has provided a moderately costly (that is, not free), easy to understand, and given the constraints of the business focus, does so rather well.

But the book has a few flaws. Here's what I found -

p.254 - "binary form" should read "dotted decimal form" - which the author uses correctly on the following page.

p.255 - no mention of NAT (Network Address Translation) as a means of saving IPv4 address space. Like the author, I'd like to see IPv6 deployed before I'm too old to care.

p.298 - the phrase "going forward" should be extirpated before the next edition. Also appears on p.312.

p.310 - the author briefly mentions an imminent "talent dearth" as driving the next wave of technical innovation, then trots out some ITAA blurb about half the job vacancies going unfilled each year. Of course, training might also help the problem, if global business can be bothered with such trifles.

p.340 - ANX was purchased by SAIC in 1999 I think, and its' URL as published has been deprecated. On the bright side, I did see a picture of a cute puppy when I went there.

p.354 - in discussing voice chat in games, author uses Sega Dreamcast as example. Only the good die young...

p.429 - author mentions Amsterdam. Sounds like reasonable grounds for a drug test to me! Of course, there's always the excuse of visiting the Van Gogh museum...

p.459 merits a special mention as both the best and worst way to sell a wireless future. Not only will the world be at your fingertips, but it will be trying to gnaw them off. While the author sees a benevolent infrastructure where knowledge of your whereabouts and tastes will be used to respond to your needs quickly and thoroughly, I see a world where your convenience comes at the price of empowering spammers, stalkers, and government goons.

Some of the parts I really enjoyed either because of their novelty or thoughtfulness were as follows:

p.274-6 - talking about the notion of backhauling data, the author touches on a problem analogous to Net Neutrality.

The Internet primer on p.259-80 was maybe the best I've read. Sadly it was too short.

Also enjoyed the circuit-switching chapters 4 and 5.

p.331 - author makes a case for tiered Internet. I'm hopeful we can keep "best effort" Internet service at a quality level sufficient for playing Battlefield 2 for the foreseeable future.

This book is better than three stars, but not quite four. Were its' material a little fresher, it would merit four. I'll check out the website and update this review accordingly.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, easy read for a tough subject.......2005-08-17

The author is a great writer! This was an easy read and I'm glad it's in my personal library. Just what I needed to know about telecom and a nice addition to my other telecom books such as Taking Charge of your VoIP Project. That's another good one. Thank you Lillian! The first time tonight I haven't had to lament the plethora of bad writers and non-existent content editors!!

Book Description

Today's electronic design and test engineers deal with several types of subsystems, namely, digital, memory, and mixed-signal, each requiring different test and design for testability methods. This book provides a careful selection of essential topics on all three types of circuits. The outcome of testing is product quality, which means `meeting the user's needs at a minimum cost.' The book includes test economics and techniques for determining the defect level of VLSI chips. Besides being a textbook for a course on testing, it is a complete testability guide for an engineer working on any kind of electronic device or system or a system-on-a-chip.

The book consists of:

Part I: Introduction, Test Process and ATE, Test Economics and Product Quality, Fault Modeling;

Part II: Logic and Fault Simulation, Testability Measures, Combinatorial ATPG, Sequential ATPG, Memory Test, DSP-Based Analog Test, Model-Based Analog Test, Delay Test, IDDQ Test;

Part III: DFT and Scan Design, BIST, Boundary Scan, Analog Test Bus, System Test and Core-Based Design, Future Testing;

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not a good book for ATE.......2003-10-20

It seems to me it is just a summary of work done by others in
the ATE field over the years. The explanations of how a device
fault is detected are not clear in most of the cases presented
in the book. The book emphasizes too much on fault
modeling but not enough on test applications and techniques.

Certainly not a good text book for students nor it
is a good book for ATE engineers. However, if you are looking
for some quick reference, this book is a good place to start
because it contains brief summaries of other people's work.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for VLSI testing........2003-04-19

This book is, as far as I know, the most comprehensive texbook on VLSI testing available at the moment. It is based on current trends and techniques in the field. After all, the authors are pioneers in this area. A worthy successor to Abramovici's earlier textbook, which, I think is beginning to look increasingly archaic. As a guy who's taken a course in testing by the authors (we were the guinea pigs for the book, actually)and is currently working in the VLSI testing area, I strongly recommend it to anyone looking to build strong testing fundamentals.

5 out of 5 stars Essentials of Mechanical Ventilation.......2007-08-23

Working as a Critical Care paramedic in the Boston area I have had the oppurtunity to hear the authors lecture. Now I have the ability to use this book as a resource. I would recommend it to anyone who uses a vent. in their job.

4 out of 5 stars Forced to by it for class.......2007-05-13

This book was a requirement for class. Book is extremely small for the price. I wish it had questions at the end of each chapter. A workbook would be great with this book. This book does not have the different ventilator brands and modes. For example - Drager, Servo, LTV1000 etc. Our teacher had to require another book just to go over the other brands.

Book needs - questions, workbook & chapters with specific ventilators.

5 out of 5 stars easy but complete approach to mechanical ventilation.......2006-06-29

I've just begun specialization in ICU and I found this text a very useful and simple approach to mechanical ventilation.
It contains all the basic notions you need to understand the base of ventilation in patients who need this kind of support.

4 out of 5 stars Good "basics" book.......2005-10-04

I used this book to study for board exams after practicing critical care ventilation for 3 years. Used it more for the jargon and specific terms than for physiology; it gave me what I needed. I would have liked more example scalars / PV loops, etc. But it has a good basic review of physiology as it pertains to ventilation.

5 out of 5 stars Succint and Fluid.......2004-08-26

Very succint, fluid and easy to read and comprehend. Not intimidating either in size or content.
The concepts are very well explained.
Because I find it easy to read and more importantly, read again, I have made this as my primary book on mechanical ventilation.

The telecommunications industry encompasses hundreds of different technologies, which in turn have spawned many trade names, jargon terms, and legal definitions. Those looking for a comprehensive introduction to the technologies, laws, and marketing programs that govern telecommunications need to read The Essential Guide to Telecommunications.

Author Annabel Z. Dodd begins by pointing out that telecommunications technologies have everything to do with signals moving over media. She then goes on to catalog some of the various kinds of signals and media, covering traditional switched telephone service, dedicated lines, public branch exchanges (PBXs), and automatic call distributors (ACDs) along the way. After that foray into technology, she gets into the U.S. telecommunications business environment, focusing heavily on the federal breakup of AT&T in 1984 and the Telecommunications Act of 1996. She then explains additional technologies; data communications and the Internet-ISDN, Frame Relay, and analog modems all get attention. The author also pays plenty of attention to wireless solutions, including satellite communications.

Unlike Newton's Telecom Dictionary (which remains an excellent resource), this book can be successfully read from start to finish by a reader with practically no telecommunications knowledge at the outset. Read and understand--that's what good technical books, like this one, enable you to do. --David Wall

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-08-20

This is the worst book I have ever had to read. There are no chapter sumaries. The logic flow within chapters seems random. Complicated terms or concepts are referenced but not explained until much later, sometimes in another chapter. Much of the information is wrong. In certain sections of the book, spaces have been omitted. Thisisveryhardtoread. This book confusses more than it clarifies. Run away, take another class. Don't buy this book

1 out of 5 stars Baaad to the Binding.......2006-10-23

This book may seem like a great intro book to those well-versed in Telecommunications. However, the book does a terrible job of explaining terms and jargon. A word, for example, will be used for several pages before being defined. There are very few practical examples and metaphors to illustrate concepts and add interest to the book. There are no photographs here either, only basic illustrations which do not clarify concepts, but instead require explaination.

All of my classmates are disgusted that we are required to use this text. Plans are being set for a post-semester Essential-Guide-to-Telecommunications bonfire!

4 out of 5 stars Telecom with great industry overview.......2005-03-18

This third edition was basically written by mid-2001, in the shakeout of the dotcoms. In spite of the intervening period of almost 4 years, the book feels relatively up-to-date on the technical side although the recent mergers in the telecom industry might need to be addressed by the author.

The book, as stated by the author, is intended to clarify technologies, trends, and history in the telecom industry. Although it provides an overview of tech, that is not is its strength; placing the terminology in the context of the structure and the history of the telecom industry is. The book is not meant for IT specialists but people like myself that need to know enough about hardware, protocols, and systems to ensure clear communication about the telecom needs of the enterprise.

Although the book is not as technical as some might like, I felt the author did a thorough job covering the structure of telecom industry and the impact of the regulatory environment, not just in the developed countries but the emerging markets of the global marketplace also. The international background, histories, mergers and aquisitions help provide a context.

Interestingly, Dodds foresaw the importance of VoIP internationally as well as the fixed wireless leap for emerging markets. Those topics remain on the front burner. All in all, this is great book to start with. It explains all the key technologies with adequate detail while exploring options for SMBs with significant trends placed in a historical and regulatory context. I recommend it for the "new kids on the block".

4 out of 5 stars Good Intro/Overview of the Telecom world.......2004-02-17

I just finished reading this book and overall found it to be very informative. It covers a general overview of everything from the Telecommunications Act of 1996 to telecommunications around the world. Landline, wireless, and internet are all covered along with the technologies that make them work. With that being said, this book will NOT make you an expert in telephony or any specific area of telecommunications. It is however, a great start.

The one problem I had with the book was numerous grammatical errors. I found that in some cases I had to mentally disassemble and rebuild a sentence to understand what was trying to be said.

I would (and have) recommend this book to a coworker and/or friend getting started with telecommunications.

5 out of 5 stars Number one Telecom Intro Book.......2003-08-04

Magnificent! Perfect example of a Technology book everyone can relate too. After finishing this one, I was desperately looking for any other technology book written by this author, couldn't find any. Looking forward to find more books from this Author..

Book Description

This book is entitled Analog Design Essentials because it contains all topics of importance to the analog designer which are essential to obtain sufficient insights to do a thorough job.

The book starts with elementary stages in building up operational amplifiers. The synthesis of opamps is covered in great detail, such that lowest power consumption is always guaranteed. Many examples are included, operating at low supply voltages. Chapters on noise, distortion, filters, ADC/DACs and oscillators follow. These are all based on the extensive amount of teaching that the author has carried out both at universities and companies world-wide. All chapters have been drawn up specifically for self-study. They aim, however, at different levels of understanding. All start with elementary material. Most chapters also contain advanced material, especially from Chapter 9 onwards.

A new format is used for this book. All slides are included on a CD-ROM, as PDF files, and are reproduced in the book, followed by the comments normally given by the teacher. This has the advantages that the material used for teaching is also the material used by the student, and that only one additional aspect is explained per slide. The student can thus easily monitor their progress in understanding.

It is hoped that this new format provides a better structure in both teaching and studying these essential topics in analog design.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great book if you use it properly.......2007-10-06

Reading this book is like taking lectures from the author. On one hand, the essentials of a subject are emphasized by the professor (I guess this is the reason for the title), which can save much of your time; on the other hand, you cannot learn a course only by attending lectures -- You still have to read textbooks.

There have been plenty of textbooks on analog design. This book is a great supplement (instead of a substitute) to those textbooks.

I like the novel format of this book. When I want to review a topic, I can browse through the slides and get the essentials quickly. It can be very helpful if you use it properly.

4 out of 5 stars A Book in Slides.......2007-06-02

The author's renowned status in analog IC-related publications helped me make the purchasing decision. I was very excited by the table of contents because the topics were exactly what I was looking for.

Specific appraisals:
1) The book is laid out in a stream-of-consciousness style, which is peculiar and very different from most engineering literatures.
2) The book is filled with excellent hands-on tips and right-to-the-point technical explanations by the author.
3) Although a few equations are given without explaining what the corresponding variables represent, the resultant impact on comprehensibility of the topics is minimum thanks to appropriate illustrations.
4) In a few slides, answers are given contradictory to the formulae shown.
5) Since the book is apparently built of numerous teaching handouts that were presented at different times/locations/occasions, the notations are not entirely consistent throughout.
6) Descriptions are not 100% thorough in some areas, and yet may be favorable to seasoned designers who like exploring on their own rather than accepting/copying everything from famous experts.
7) The CD could have been better documented.
8) Arguably not the author's best work in the field of analog IC design thus far.
9) Not exactly suitable for beginners.

It would be great if the book had gone deeper into the discussion of switched-capacitor and current-mode circuits. But if it had, the title would have been something like "Advanced Analog Design" rather than the presented "Analog Design Essentials".

1 out of 5 stars Wrong Name!!.......2007-05-23

The name Analog Design Essentials is wrong for this book!. It is a collection of slides (most probably from a course the author teaches)with short paragraphs which explain the slides. The selection of topics is very good but random equations are thrown in without any explanation whatsoever. You will have to revert to another book to try to understand some of the things the author is talking about. If you are an undergraduate student, DO NOT buy this book thinking it deals with the basics! Practising analog design engineers might find this book interesting. I bought this book because I have high respect for the author. I've read many papers authored by him and a previous analog design book where he was the co-author which, in my opinion is one of the best books on analog design (sadly not in print anymore!).

5 out of 5 stars Fun to Read.......2007-05-11

The design philosophy is to stay above subthreshold and below velocity saturation, and hope square-law works there. Slide 0152 indicates this approach became obsolete in 2004 as the window between these conditions vanished for shorter device lengths! Nonetheless, the approach provides a lot of insight.

A drawback: references to sources, like (Hosticka, Sackinger) found on p. 82, without further information, force the reader to Google Scholar to find papers!

Reviewer Chan's comments on the CD are accurate. Some figures indeed have illegible labels, 2142 being a worst case. Attempts to copy the pdf file either from Acrobat itself or using Copy/Paste lead to a "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" menu, and the file is not transferred to disk.

One reason to take the trouble to load into Acrobat is its search feature that allows you to look for all references to "gain boost" for example. That is helpful mostly because the index, table of contents, and cross referencing of this book are really, really poor. Unfortunately, it takes a full 4 minutes to load a 600 MB Chapter from the CD into Acrobat.

Not convenient to use, and maybe a bit dated (no more than other texts), but a lot of fun. At this price - you can't go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome!!.......2007-04-05

This is a great book, no doubt about that. Although it has an unconventional approach for a book--slides etc.,--it manages to squeeze lot of analog in the end. And that's what that matters. The author himself is an authority on the subject and one can realize the genuine desire-- matched by his efforts--he has, to get the topics to his readers. This book is good as a supplement, a reference, an introductory text or simply revising material for an advanced material. Of course the lack of literature in some instances or detailed formulae for that matter, may leave a reader disappointed at times, but don't let turn you off for you can find those in any standard textbook.
The CD files, unlike observed by another reader, can actually be copied to your hard disk. But they take lot of space, each is the size of a CD. This is for a reason. The CD is nothing but a sort of e-book given free, and I hope someone who is reading this book understands respecting IP as such. Copying a chapter or two for personal or academic use certainly falls under fair copyright use so that shouldn't be a problem either. Of course the publishers don't want you to copy/backup entire text or distribute it. The large file-size is probably meant to prevent that. All-in-all this is a great book and a must have on any serious analog designer's table. Ask your school or company library to buy it if you can't but do try it any which way. In most cases it will be an investment well made.

Book Description

Many current soil science textbooks cater for a traditional student market where able students embark on three years study in a narrow discipline. Today most degree schemes are modular and subjects such as soil science are taught as self-standing units in the first year alone. Students are less willing to read and purchase books and require informative revision textbooks which aid in passing exams. If students study soil science beyond their first year there are a variety of good textbooks to choose from on specialist topics. In reality few students study soil science to a higher level therefore this textbook would be popular both for its format and its relevance to a large population of environmental type students.

Are you concerned about the amount of damage to your hedges, your roses, your flowers, your trees and other plants? Have you automatically reached for your organic or chemical pesticides, herbacides, fertilizers, and anything else to use to salvage what is left of your plants? Do you advise others on their problems with plants? In solving these problems, does your solution address the root cause or merely the symptoms? In seven chapters of 185 pages, the authors take the reader from the question "What are soils made from?" to a thorough discussion of "soil contamination and erosion." The topic of each chapter and sub-chapter is presented in question form: "How does water act in the soil?" "What is soil acidity?" and the questions are answered: "Instinctively we all know what is meant when we say something is acidic--we automatically think about lemon juice or vinegar..."
The authors use a substantial number of charts, graphs, drawings, and black and white pictures to achieve their stated purpose: "Every attempt has been made to assume no previous scientific knowledge, to insure new concepts are explained simply, often using examples of everyday items, and anything considered too detailed for the average undergradate course has been ruthlessly cut from the text."
Relying on my recollection of various undergraduate college survey or introduction courses to biology, botony, chemistry, and my experiences of growing roses, flowers, shrubs and vegetables, I gained a basic understanding of the science of soils, and the impact errors in soil management have on plants. Too many times I have attempted to treat the symptoms of sick plants and not the root causes: "Chapter 6: How can we optimize the physical condition of the soil for plant growth?" "What can we do to remediage a polluted site?"

When the authors conclude their presentation on page 185, we are presented five pages of other references including numerous internet web pages more than seven pages of index. The cost of the book is a lot, and in my opinion, worth every cent!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lots of useful advices.......2003-05-07

The clear presentation style of this book makes for an extremely easy reading. However don't let simplicity be mistaken for usefulness. This books is packed with great advices & nice rules of thumb. Best part is the presentation of 2 step by step layout case studies: a CMOS amp & BJT mixer at the end.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2002-08-17

Clearly presented techniques with illustrations. This is the techniques companion to authors' other book, 'IC Layout Basics: A Practical Guide'. Both are an easy read, with even complex topics explained very clearly.

Get both. Each has unique content from the other. Both are enjoyable reading.
