3 out of 5 stars Okay for a text.......2006-03-18

This book is okay for a text book, however there arent many examples, and the examples that are there are very simple. There are solutions for some problems online, though most of them are very basic and don't help very much.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Book.......2004-08-28

This is a nice book for scientists and engineers. There are MATLAB programs already written that you can download from the webpage very easily, and modify for your specific use. I am no programmer, so having programs I can easily modify is a plus. This is meant to only be a review of linear algebra, so if you are trying to learn that subject, you will probably need to supplement this text with another book. This is not terribly in-depth on the MATLAB either. But it is a very useful handbook of plotting and interpolation methods, and how to choose the best methods for your particular set of data.

4 out of 5 stars As a textbook?.......2006-10-26

I've noticed several reviewers have benifited from this book as a reference for algorithms in specific topics, which is something the book is really good at in my opinion.

However, we studied the book as a junior level textbook in numerical methods and went into many problems in doing so. Although the motiviation is well, the presentation is not. For example, the parts on Fourier Approximation (Chapter 19), and Finite Difference: Elliptic Equations (Chapter 29) really do require good background knowledge on behalf of the reader, and the authors sometimes rush into the approximation techniques with hardly any explination of the underlying logic.

For undergraduate students, I don't believe this book is good for self-teaching. More elaboration is needed in the derivations of the nemurical techniques, and without that, many of us were lost when it came to homeworks and computer projects.

On the bright side, The graphs are excellent , and the book covers a very wide range of topics and presents many codes and worked out examples.

5 out of 5 stars Numerical Methods made easy.......2006-02-11

I bought this book a little while ago to get more familiar with interpolation which I need to use in some of the signal analysis software that I write. As I was reading through the book I suddenly realized the overall usefulness of numerical methods in general. It has helped me code up routines for solving matrices and interpolation algorithms. After reading this book I really can not understand how courses in linear algebra and differential equations can be taught without extensive use of numerical methods.

This book has really opened my eyes to a whole new way of solving engineering problems.

3 out of 5 stars A excellent book ruined by clutter.......2006-02-05

The basic content of the book is excellent. However, in trying to cover different packages and/or languages the book loses its charm.

This book is a glaring example of how an otherwise excellent textbook can be ruined by clutter. If the authors had stayed with Fortran/C or Matlab (but not both) and provided more of ready made programs or subroutines, it would be a lot more useful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Numerical Algorithms Programming.......2006-02-01

If you are a programmer who must work with calculation intensive algorithms, you will need a book such as this. The chapters are well written and cover many subjects which are easily forgotten when not used often. The section explaining the difference between precision and accuracy is quite good.

Also worthy of personal praise is the suggestion that piecemeal cubic spline approximations more accurately reflect abrupt (zonal) shifts in the data, better than do higher order polynomical approximations.

The book seems to cover most of the subjects that a non-specialist programmer might need, when confronted with a numerical methods prospect. Topics include: matrix reduction, numerical differentiation and integration, truncated series approximations, curve fitting and fast fourier transforms to name a few. It also deals extensively with the nitty-gritty of computing, from bits, bytes and numerical representations; to MatLab, MathCAD, and Fortran.

Book Description

Scientific Computing and Differential Equations: An Introduction to Numerical Methods, is an excellent complement to Introduction to Numerical Methods by Ortega and Poole. The book emphasizes the importance of solving differential equations on a computer, which comprises a large part of what has come to be called scientific computing. It reviews modern scientific computing, outlines its applications, and places the subject in a larger context.
This book is appropriate for upper undergraduate courses in mathematics, electrical engineering, and computer science; it is also well-suited to serve as a textbook for numerical differential equations courses at the graduate level.

* An introductory chapter gives an overview of scientific computing, indicating its important role in solving differential equations, and placing the subject in the larger environment
* Contains an introduction to numerical methods for both ordinary and partial differential equations
* Concentrates on ordinary differential equations, especially boundary-value problems
* Contains most of the main topics for a first course in numerical methods, and can serve as a text for this course
* Uses material for junior/senior level undergraduate courses in math and computer science plus material for numerical differential equations courses for engineering/science students at the graduate level

4 out of 5 stars Does the job well.......2001-06-30

This book is an excellent introduction to the field of scientific computing and serves well as a textbook, given the many exercises included in it. Although the software packages quoted in the book have been considerably revised since the time of publication of the book, one can still use it effectively as a guide to the construction of algorithms and software for scientific applications. The level of the book makes it suitable for a course in numerical analysis at the advanced undergraduate level. After a brief review of the concepts and strategies employed in mathematical modeling in chapter 1, the author begins in chapter 2 with the study of initial value problems for ordinary differential equations. He motivates the discussion with the predator-prey problem from mathematical biology and the ballistic trajectory problem with air resistance from physics. The initial-value problem for the general case of systems of ordinary differential equations is then solved using finite difference methods. The author treats thoroughly Euler's method along with its discretization error. Recognizing that first-order methods have very slow rates of convergence, Runge-Kutta methods are discussed next to alleviate this problem. The Heun method, fourth-order method, and more general one-step methods are discussed in detail. The sample initial value problems are then treated using some of these techniques. The technique of polynomial interpolation, so popular as a solution technique in high-level symbolic programming languages such as Mathematica, is discussed in this chapter also. Multistep methods, such as the Adams-Bashforth, Adams-Moulton, and predictor-corrector methods are treated also. The author also discusses the important concept of stability in this chapter. Although he does not give a rigorous definition of stability, due to the mathematical formalism needed for such a definition, he does give several examples of differential equations that are not stable, and also examples of instabilities in the actual numerical methods employed.

Boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations are treated in the next chapter. The author motivates the problem via a two-point boundary value problem, but only concentrates on linear boundary value problems in this chapter, with the nonlinear case treated in chapter 5. The author carefully distinguishes between Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The solution of the discretized problem is solved appropriately with Gaussian elimination, and the author gives a numerical example. The case of periodic boundary conditions is also treated, and the author chooses to solve the resulting linear system using the Sherman-Morrison technique, instead of Gaussian elimination, arguing (correctly) that this method only needs code for solving tridiagonal matrices.

The study of the solution of linear systems of equations is taken up in more detail in the next chapter, with emphasis on solution techniques for banded or full matrices. The class of least square problems is treated first, with least square polynomials and their calculation using orthogonal polynomials. The author then treats Gaussian elimination in more detail in this chapter, with treatments of LU factorization and banded matrices being treated. The author gives the reader more details on the performance issues involved in the different solution techniques. Ill-conditioning and error analysis are first discussed here in the context of solution of systems of linear equations, along with definitions and calculations of condition numbers. The author also gives good overviews of alternative factorization techniques, such as Cholesky and QR factorization.

The most important application of numerical methods is in the class of nonlinear problems, since these usually do not have analytical solutions. Even if analytical solutions are found in terms of special functions, the calculation of these special functions typically must be done using techniques from numerical analysis. Nonlinear problems are discussed in chapter 5 of this book, wherein the author again uses the projectile problem to introduce shooting methods. This is followed by a very detailed discussion of the solution of a nonlinear equation using bisection, secant, and Newton's methods. Systems of nonlinear equations are then discussed, with the infamous Picard iteration technique leading the discussion, followed again by a treatment using Newton's method.

Then in the next chapter, the author switches gears somewhat by moving away from techniques based on finite differences and discussing ones such as finite element, Galerkin's and Rayleigh-Ritz methods. The mathematical considerations employed in this chapter are a little more involved than the other chapters, but the author explains the ideas well, and the assigned exercises shed more light on the issues involved. Spine approximations are also discussed, along with the numerical evaluation of the integrals that naturally arise in Galerkin methods.

Eigenvalue problems, so ubiquitous in all areas of science and engineering, are the subject of the next chapter. Interestingly, the author discusses Gerschgorin's theorem, which usually does not appear in a book at this level. Most of the popular techniques for solving eigenvalue problems, such as QR and iterative methods, are discussed thoroughly.

The author gives the reader a taste of the numerical solution of partial differential equations starting in the next chapter, where the heat equation, wave equation, and Poisson's equation lead off the discussion. Separation of variables is discussed briefly as a technique of solution, but the author places emphasis first on finite difference methods for solving these equations. The stability and error analysis of these methods are first studied for the heat and wave equations, and this is followed by a discussion of implicit methods, with a brief treatment given of the Crank-Nicolson method. After a discussion of semi-discrete methods, the author then moves on in last chapter to problems in dimensions two and three. The sparse matrices arising from the discretization of the problems are shown for the Poisson and heat equations. The ADI method, along with Gaussian elimination, Jacobi's, Gauss-Seidel, SOR, and conjugate gradient methods are all given fine treatments.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent advanced book on CNC Programming topics.......2006-07-08

This handbook by Smid on the subject of CNC programming tackles the subject from a different angle than his bestselling "CNC Programming Handbook". That book is a more basic one aimed at beginners. This book is more advanced and contains several programming subjects that are very difficult to find either in other books or on the web. Even where there is overlap with the author's "CNC Programming Guide", this book provides much more depth of coverage on various subjects than that book does. As is standard with this author, this book includes many clear detailed drawings that greatly assist in visualizing the procedures covered. Whenever applicable, a complete programming example is provided. Equations and all tools used in each example are boxed and clearly labeled. As always, this author's instructions and explanations are clear and detailed. I show the table of contents next as the best way of explaining the book's contents:
1. Part Program Development
2. Calculating Contour Points

5 out of 5 stars Another well written book by Peter Smid.......2006-01-30

Technical readers who are familiar with the CNC Programming Handbook by Peter Smid will, without doubt, also react favourably to this book. The format is similar and there are hundreds of excellent illustrations and programming examples. While the previous book dealt mainly with theory and concepts, this work moves on to real life applications of these concepts. Examples include the use of tapered endmills in programming, multiaxis lathes, custom cycles, knurling, and other tips and tricks.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for those with an existing background in EM.......2003-10-24

I used this book during my MSEE research and found it to be invaluable. While I also had the benefit of the principal author being my Advisor, this book easily stands by itself. This book describes several different methods and concepts in the computational analysis of EM problems, including issues related to computer optimization. It's somewhat dense in that the authors assume you already have a thorough knowledge of EM, so I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. If you work in the field, however, this book is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Computational Methods for Electromagnetics.......2003-04-29

This is a specialist book - indispensable for those involved in computational electromagnetics. It gives a lucid and indepth treatment of a wide variety of computational EM problems and associated theory. It is packed full of appropriately placed references which are at the coalface of research in this area. A great book! Well done!

5 out of 5 stars A Review for Programmers, by a Programmer.......1999-07-25

7.24.99 SJW *****

This is something of a book review, but also a commentary on the Mathematica package. My background is a recent MS in Computer Science. My interest in Mathematica is as a thinking tool for Programmer/Analysts or R&D Prototypers.

John Gray's book comes with a CD-ROM including the entire text of the book (the book was produced using Mathematica) as well as help files which can easily be integrated into the resources of the Mathematica Help Browser.

The book is well laid out (see the Table of Contents at amazon.com) topically, starting with very basic usage of the math abilities, and the user interface, then moving on to programming styles using Mathematica and methods of representing information in Mathematica. (All major commands in the Mathematica package are searchable, topical resources are available via documentation chapters on that topic, and explanatory text is hyperlinked in html format.)

The book's style is absolutely functional, and is targeted at users who have at least a threshhold knowledge of modern programming. Much of the material somewhat assumes that the reader has read enough using the Help Browswer with its on-line manual to be able to operate the notebook interface. Examples are given for almost every topic (the examples are executable in Mathematica, as the text of the book is in the form of a Mathematica notebook), although the specifics of each example are not necessarily explained.

As a programmer, the most amazing revelation of Gray's book is the degree to which the Mathematica package is programmable. Of course, procedural commands are built in to allow the coding of procedural algorithms (these commands have the form of generic pseudocode commands, or "near-C"). But Gray gives examples of programming using functions (recursion is allowed), as well as instructions re o-o and constraint (rule-based) styles of programming. (Note that Mathematica has built in pattern matching notations--especially useful for rule-based programming.)

In short, not only is Mathematica a completely integrated symbolic/numeric advanced math utility with integrated graphics and statistical packages, but it also has its own virtual operating system (full file i/o controls), and it allows the user to write rule-based programs (such as LISP or Prolog interpreters) which have full access to all of the built in Mathematica abilities, and to custom compiled components which the user has written.

Because all Mathematica's abilities are integrated, data can easily be displayed graphically, allowing visual debugging of difficult algorithms, or analysis (or reports). Gray provides a few examples of the visual display of algorithms.

The bottom line is that Mathematica is an astounding prototyping tool, as well as being the best graduate CS math utility I have used. And John Gray's book opens up these possibilities to the reader. Savor the possibilities!

    Book Description

In this book, after a brief review of the more popular turbulence models, we present and discuss accurate and efficient numerical methods for solving the boundary-layer equations with turbulence models based on algebraic formulas (mixing length, eddy viscosity) or partial-differential transport equations. A computer program employing the Cebeci-Smith model and the k-e model for obtaining the solution of two-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows without separation is discussed in detail and is presented in the accompanying CD.
The numerical solution of the boundary-layer equations with flow separation is also discussed and an interactive boundary-layer method developed by the author is described in detail. A computer program for obtaining solutions on airfoils and wakes for a wide range of angles of attack, including stall, is discussed and presented in the accompanying CD. In many respects, this book can be seen as complimentary and supplementary to the author's Analysis of Turbulent Flows.

      Book Description

Cebeci addresses transition from laminar to turbulent flows and considers solutions, mainly with the help of the linear stability theory and the ways in which it can be implemented accurately by numerical procedures. The main concern is transition of wall boundary layers, although one chapter is devoted to an approach based on the Navier-Stokes equations. The first three chapters summarize physical knowledge of the transition process, consider the stability equations and methods for predicting transition by linear stability theory, and describe efficient and accurate numerical methods for the solution of stability equations. Chapters 4 to 7 describe computer programs based on stability-theory approach to identify the location of transition in two- and three-dimensional incompressible and compressible flows, respectively, and Chapter 7 describes a computer program within the framework of parabolized stability equations. These programs are provided on an accompanying CD-ROM.

      Book Description

Suitable for a first year graduate course, this textbook unites the applications of numerical mathematics and scientific computing to the practice of chemical engineering. Written in a pedagogic style, the book describes basic linear and nonlinear algebric systems all the way through to stochastic methods, Bayesian statistics and parameter estimation. These subjects are developed at a level of mathematics suitable for graduate engineering study without the exhaustive level of the theoretical mathematical detail. The implementation of numerical methods in MATLAB is integrated within each chapter and numerous examples in chemical engineering are provided, with a library of corresponding MATLAB programs. This book will provide the graduate student with essential tools required by industry and research alike. Supplementary material includes solutions to homework problems set in the text, MATLAB programs and tutorial, lecture slides, and complicated derivations for the more advanced reader. These are available online at www.cambridge.org/9780521859714.

5 out of 5 stars excellent intro to applied math, not just for chemical engineers.......2007-07-23

This is extremely well written, combining both intuition and rigour. It has good accompanying matlab demos. It should be of interest to many people who use numerical methods (integration, optimization, eigen analysis, etc), not just chemical engineers.

      Book Description

While many authors cover the theory of finite element modeling, this is the only book available that incorporates ANSYS as an integral part of its content. Moaveni presents the theory of finite element analysis, explores its application as a design/modeling tool, and explains in detail how to use ANSYS intelligently and effectively. Now uses Excel in solving simple finite element problems. Adds a significant number of new problems. Incorporates the latest version of ANSYS throughout. A useful reference for mechanical, civil and environmental engineers.

4 out of 5 stars Finite Element Analysis: Theory and Applications with ANSYS.......2007-05-06

This is a basis book for Finite Element Analysis. Also buy a book in Amazon is a fantastic guarantee of service.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Book Ever!!!.......2007-05-03

We are at chapter 13 now and I now know that the book do not provide good fundamentals nor details to understand what FEA is all about. Tutorials are useless because they do not explain anything what's going on. You just must figure it out yourself. This is OK for secondary book. But don't expect to understand it without any other help. Choppy steps for the solution in the examples!

      5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2006-07-06

I can't imagine my learning process of FEA without this book. It's really good and comprenhensive. It is nice to read and it provides clear explanations to difficult topics. I believe this is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic intro to FEA.......2005-09-08

This book provides a great intro to FEA in general befor eit actually starts ANSYS Tutorial. The book is strictly for beginners .It contains very less details on Batch files ,nonlinear problems etc.

2 out of 5 stars Good intro, but does not go far enough.......2000-08-09

I bought this book hoping it would make my job of developing a finite element model using ANSYS easier. But I did not learn much of anything new from this book. I was already familiar with finite element theory and also took the intro to ansys course offered by ANSYS. I had hoped that this book would go beyond what was offered by these two sources, but sadly it does not. Still, for the beginner who knows next to nothing of f.e. methods and ANSYS this is probably helpful.
