Book Description
The Timber Press Pocket Guide to Japanese Maples describes and illustrates 300 of the most widely available Japanese maples in North America and Europe. Along with basic information on cultivation and maintenance, it provides lists of trees for specific landscape uses, enabling gardeners to select the best trees for various garden conditions. Fifty newer cultivars are presented, including four outstanding trees that are expected to become very popular in the near future. The guide is a valuable complement to the 3rd edition of J. D. Vertrees' Japanese Maples (updated in 2001 by Peter Gregory). Its handy format makes it an ideal reference for taking to the nursery or garden center.
Customer Reviews:
Just the facts Jack.......2007-07-03
Pocket Guide to Japanese Maples is an excellent companion to the ultimate maple reference book entitled, Japanese Maples by J.Vertrees and Peter Gregory. I find this book to be well thought out and consolidated. It includes addition information as to cultivation and some newer cultivar. This book gives the reader the most important information quickly, easily and succinctly. I is a very welcome addition and most appreciated.
Handy for arborists and horticulturalists.......2007-06-10
Small brief and compact but very detailed synopsis of the about 300 cultivar. Useful for taking to the nursery or when you go to gardens with cultivar. Well illustrated and designed for quick reference.
Excellent Resource for Acer Palmatum Lovers!!.......2007-05-27
This is an excellent companion, for any lover of Japanese Maples, to the Hardcover volume, "Japanese Maples" and it is transportable and can be used as a reference on the go. The descriptions and photos are spot on and it's organized by landscape purpose, location and size. It also includes 50 new cultivars. I would strongly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Crystal Clear, Easy to Read.......2006-07-14
My husand and I just wanted to put together a living will and health care directive and at this point just need something fairly simple. This book is easy to understand, yet comprehensive.
Very good book - wish it was my text for class.......2005-10-17
Have not had a chance to read cover to cover yet, but it looks very well written and organized so far, so that any normal person can absorb and understand. Wish this was the required text for my class. No doubt it will probably fill in the gaps that my real text missed, since this book seems more grounded in reality, than textbook theory. It may not help me on the test, thought I'm sure it will; but I'm sure it will help me in real life.
Very understandable over view of a complex subject!.......2001-09-04
As a development officer for a prep school, I was looking for a book that would give me a birds-eye view of issues involved with estate planning. Steve Mapleýs The Complete Idiotýs Guide to Wills and Estates does this masterfully. And, to my relief, in plain English. Impressive for an attorney thatýs taught and practiced for the over 25 years!
In very easy-to-read language, Maple thoroughly lays out the whole terrain of estate planningýfrom having a will to ways to save on current taxes and issues to consider in caring for aging parents. Going beyond mere explanation, heýs packed this book with helpful forms and lists to get the reader started in their own estate planning. I picked up this book to help me with my conversations with donors but I ended up sitting down with an attorney to work on my own plan!
Maple groups his 24 chapters into five sections:
Part 1: Assets, Assets, Assets
Part 2: About Wills, Trusts. . . and Probate
Part 3: All in the Familyýand Just a Little Beyond
Part 4: Taxes You Must Pay, and Those Maybe You Donýt
Part 5: Retirement, Elder Issues, and the Broad Planning Picture
The structure of The Complete Idiotýs Guide to Wills and Estates makes it a great book for busy professionals. Itýs very easy to read in short chunks of time. And itýs not just for the beginner. Although itýs now somewhat dated, Maple gives some pretty technical examinations of taxes and IRS regulations. For readers that way find themselves losing interest during the dryer technical sections there are tips, quotes, and anecdotal information interspersed throughout. As a development professional, I was particularly glad for Chapter 18 ýHow Charitable Donations Can Save You Money.ý Iým trying to figure out how I could make this chapter required reading for prospective donors.
More than any planned giving seminar Iýve attended, and for a lot less money, The Complete Idiotýs Guide to Wills and Estates has helped me see estate planning from the donorýs perspective. I highly recommend this book.
up to snuff.......2000-11-15
I'm a big fan of the idiot's guides since they are always clear and easy to follow. The authors do an excellent job of explaining complex terms and concepts so even an ordinary person can understand the reasons behind drafting a will. After reading this book, you'll see that you'll want to do everything you can so that you do not find yourself "intestate" -- then the state fights over what belongs to whom. Although it's difficult to think about dying, it's even worse to think about having all your money thrown to taxes or tied up in court as relatives fight. Prevent this ugly mess by learning the basics of wills and estates. I should add that this book goes well beyond the basics -- even a millionaire could learn a few good tips from this excellent book.
good to start out with.........2000-04-05
Excellent source of information for anyone who doesn't have a clue where to start. Easy to read and packed with hints. Motivating little scenarios to keep those of us who have been procrastinating in motion. Both my husband (who this was all new to) and myself (with a background in accounting) found it to be useful.
Book Description
From buying equipment to tapping your own trees to boiling the sap, this is the classic, best-selling guide to making maple syrup.
This little book swept maple sugarin' buffs off their feet when it first appeared and is still the top-selling guide to the craft after nearly 30 years in print. Like the previous editions, this one tells you how you can make maple syrup right in your own backyard without having to build a sap house or buy buckets, holding tanks, evaporators and other expensive paraphernalia. Provides detailed "how-to" information, and makes some new and noteworthy revelations-including tips sugarers across the country have shared with the author. 60 black & white photographs, 6 line illustrations, index.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Step by step guide for everybody.......2007-01-11
It doesnt matter if never made maple syrup and you are a newbie like me, or you are a pro. These simple techniques will explain to you how and why make excellent maple syrup. Lots and lots of good advice from somebody that really knows the sugarin process in the backyard. This also means that you can make your own syrup without spending a fortune but buying simple little things or reusing everyday use things for the whole process.
Its more of a dialogue of your grandpa teaching you than a guide.
Great guide.......2006-12-26
We have a 300+ year old sugar maple in our back yard. For the past few years we have tapped it each spring and boiled down the sap for the best maple syrup! This wonderful little "how-to guide" has given us a lot of pointers and info we were not aware of before. Easy to read and understand too. Just a nice little reference book.
Excellent starter book........2004-10-02
I remember fondly the early Michigan spring from my childhood, helping my father collect sap. This more than anything fueled my desire to make my own syrup. This book, Rink Mann's "Backyard Sugarin'" is an excellent book to get you off without breaking your back or your bank account. The author has a delightful writing style that is thoroughly engrossing. The book is well illustrated, full of ideas and rock solid on exactly when, how and what to tap, and exactly how to process all that sap. I highly recomend this book. Even if you don't live in sugar country you will enjoy this book.
Everything you need to know -- just add trees!.......2003-03-19
This is the do-it-yourself book that got me started on that sweet rite of spring -- making my own maple syrup. The author's emphasis is on how to do it efficiently and very cheaply, using easy-to-find materials you can scrounge yourself. If you have the trees to tap, by all means get this book! (Hint: they don't have to be the sugar maple species. Try other maples as well. I get great syrup from box elders, which I considered "trash trees" until I learned they are in the maple family. Now I treasure them like gold.)
My own sugaring set-up is total simplicity: just some old refrigerator grates set on top of cinder blocks, heated with odd scraps of wood that others have thrown away at construction sites, etc. The sap is boiled down in flat baking pans, then finished off on the stove inside. Except for the initial expense to buy some professional spiles for tapping (you can make those, too, but I'm a failure as a tinsmith), I have spent ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the 3-4 gallons of syrup we make each year. Not a bad return for a book that I cost me less than ten bucks!
Great intro to ultra cheap sugaring!.......1999-02-02
This book has an overarching philosophy - keep it simple and keep it cheap! The authors describe everything you need to know and stress not having to pay for anything you can get for free. This quest for free stuff that works well is one of the pleasures of hobby sugaring. Well written descriptions of all the processes. Lots of photos. Reading it makes you wish the sap would start flowing NOW! Highly recommended

Customer Reviews:
Helpful.......2000-10-25
I found this book to be more of a help than the student solutions manual. It covers the material in the beginnings of the chapters (6-12 covered in this review) well and will help you check your work to make sure you are getting it right. It is sparse on the applied sections but does have hints and references to help you through the material.
Advanced Engineering Mathematics (6 edition).......2000-07-07
Book Description
This book covers not only the popular Japanese maples but surveys all 125 species in the genus Acer, from towering giants to small plants ideal for container growing.
Customer Reviews:
They take a good whack at the topic.......2005-11-02
Nice pictures, and descriptions of many Maples. It may be lacking installation and propagation details. There are many good descriptions and may be adequate for most novices, they show the differences in the cultivars of a good sampling of maples, including the Hybridized, Japanese,Korean and Chinese maples. I have enjoyed the book yet there is much room for improvement, but that book would cost seventy to one hundred dollar plus. You get what you pay for most of the time and you do get what you for here as well. One book can not cover the topic in all its fascists, there are to many different point of view, qualifications, biases and specific interest all play a key roll in the author's compilation of the book and can she/he write and can she plant a tree with success or is she just faking us out and spiting out a book on contract .
Maple Mania.......2001-08-15
This book is a must for anyone with a thirst for deeper knowledge of trees. James Harris' book describes the botany and world distribution of the massive genus Acer clearly and concisely. For identification of individual sub-species, the photographs and line drawings show amazing detail of bark, seed and leaf. The section, A-Z of species, deals with each Acer in sufficient and useful detail. Not only is the book an excellent reference for botanists/arborists, but also for the keen gardener, as the sections on cultivation and planting are highly informative. Personally, as a Bonsai enthusiast, I have found the book invaluable in researching a particular species of tree.
A small, yet great maple "dictionary".......2001-03-30
Of the maple books I have seen and viewed, this has been the cheapest and the most informational for its size. The book contains information, not only on Acer palmatum, but on all trees of this genus. It provides lots of good and useful general information on the care, propagation, and classification. It provides many pages of color photos of the many maples that are described in detail in the book. For me, this book helped me decide exactly which maple tree was to my taste and perfect for my gardern. So interested in maples? Get this book!

Great Straight No Nonsense - Easy Read.......2002-04-29
This book is a wonderful tool. Not just a reference, full of working knowledge a small business owner should have before launching a new business (very good for startups). Also, an excellent read if your business has grown to the point where you are considering leaving a regular paycheck to manage and grow your business. Detailed but not overwhelming, insightful without excepting a great deal of prior knowledge about business law. Just a great book.

Customer Reviews:
must have Maple book for all gardeners.......2007-07-06
Enjoyed this book. Look forward to other plant books by this author. Especially if he does Viburnums as stated on the flap of the Maple book.
The Connoisseurs Guide to the Maple Family.......2005-01-14
THE ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO MAPLES is far more than the definitive book on all of the 250 species of this favorite tree for all seasons. It stands solidly as an art book for environmentalists, arborists, and lovers of color photography.
In his Introduction Antoine Le Hardy De Beaulieu presents a warmly written history of the maple trees, with special attention to the areas of the world where this ubiquitous genus appears. Then follows a beautifully organized guide to each of the many species, with not only lush color photographs of the trees in the environment but also with close up views of specifics that assist the gardener in identifying each tree. Then at the end of this large volume considerable space is devoted to landscape placements of these magnificent trees that not only offer suggestions to planners, but also can be viewed as fine art photography. Highly Recommended volume. Grady Harp, January 2005
Really magnificent.......2004-03-05
The Timber Press has been putting out lavishly printed volumes (full color on glossy paper) for awhile now. With this book they appear to have lifted the publishing of fine books to a new level. They not only found a group of people dedicated to their subject and to fine photography who captured the saillant features in almost invariably excellent pictures, but also managed to find a layout to do these pictures full justice. Basically (almost) every maple species (or subspecies) has two pages devoted to it (or a multiple of that): a page of text and a page of pictures. Where more pages are devoted to a single maple sometimes a full page is devoted to a single picture, but this is the exception. Usually there are several pictures per page with large pictures of habit and smaller pictures of detail. The effect is quite splendid. A quick browse through the text reveals nothing out of place, with a recent classification being followed, although I suspect that a really close look will show up nitpickingly small errors. All in all this is really magnificent maple book, with a considerable wow!-factor.

Nice Selection of Topics, Good Book.......1998-09-30
I am a big fan of MATLAB, and this is a good book, therefore, this book seems perfect for a Computational Sciences Survey course for undergraduates. Professionals, such as engineers or mathmematicians, can use this book to learn how easy it is to use Maple and MATLAB.
The topics are diverse, and are not systematic, which I consider to be a strength for this type of book. The writing is concise and direct.
The book is written primarily by Swiss and Czech authors; some minor grammer and puncuation errors exist and the references list many non-english titles. I think this is a strength: it is important to realize the international nature of Compuational Science.
Book Description
This market leading text is known for its comprehensive coverage, careful and correct mathematics, outstanding exercises and self contained subject matter parts for maximum flexibility.
Thoroughly updated and streamlined to reflect new developments in the field, the ninth edition of this bestselling text features modern engineering applications and the uses of technology. Kreyszig introduces engineers and computer scientists to advanced math topics as they relate to practical problems. The material is arranged into seven independent parts: ODE; Linear Algebra, Vector Calculus; Fourier Analysis and Partial Differential Equations; Complex Analysis; Numerical methods; Optimization, graphs; and Probability and Statistics.
Customer Reviews:
How could you possibly think this is helpful?.......2007-09-14
I took one look at this supposed solutions manual and knew it would be worthless. The book for accompanying this is pretty bad too, so why should I expect to get a decent solutions manual. This is a broad broad overview of each section and has maybe three actual solutions worked out if you're lucky. I get so sick of these authors doing the least amount of work for people that are really trying to learn this stuff. Unfortunately I will have to find help elsewhere. Also, if you want to review the book review it on the book page not on the solutions manual page.
Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
One of those bloodsucking drain the students dry of cash evil bastich series of textbooks. Some useful information, but probably up to version 27 of its cash gathering exercise by now. Exactly what textbooks should not be, a prime example of a RIP OFF, if there ever was one.
Not worth the money.......2007-07-16
This book was a major disappointment. Having taken 15 yrs off between getting my BS and starting grad school, I was looking for detailed examples of how to solve problems to refresh my memory. The solutions in this book skipped several steps and proved to be only marginally helpful, if even that. If you don't clearly understand the real text book, you won't get much help from this "solutions" manual. As in the text, there are not enough examples in this manual either. There is not even an example representing each subset of problems in the back of each chapter. Don't waste your money.
Owner of Advanced Eng Mathmatics, 9th edition.......2007-06-01
The student manual has been very helpful in getting me started back into the engineering mathmatics. It is nice to have a helper when I get stumped on some of the problems I know should be easy.
review on my book.......2007-05-07
I am satisfied with the quality of the book and the time it took for the book to reach me.
