Heavy Electrical / Electronic focus. I only bought it because it was the required text for a Graduate Course, but hardly used it as I have other Reliability Engeineering texts (Modarres) which cover much of the same material in far more detail and with more clairity. I would only buy it if studying a course which closesly follows this text, otherwise, I would keep looking.

This book contains an excellent treatment of the mathematics for reliability analysis and prediction. It also has numerous, excellent examples that are particularly relevant to the Electronics Industry. I strongly would recommend this book to anyone involved in the instruction of Design for Six Sigma.
Must read!.......2006-10-26
This book is very well written for a subject as wide as reliability engineering. I enjoyed all the chapters in this book other than software reliability which I did not read. This book also forms a good reference for ASQ CRE examination. However if you want to read in depth on any of the chapters covered, I will recommend relevent industry standards (like IEEE, MIL etc). This book in most cases will give an excellent start.

This is a great first book on the subject of reliability. Every reliability engineer should have a copy as well as engineering managers concerned about warranty costs. But the other reviewers wrote much the same. I have used this book even further.
I often refer to this book to get grounded on a point. It is a work that takes me to the answers I need quickly and then points to other experts via the many references at the end of each chapter. I have several copies and use the fourth edition now. I have reliability engineers who report to me and this book, among a few others, are what I require each staff member to obtain and become familiar with as part of their overall knowledge base.
A few years ago I wrote a book on improving product reliability with a colleague and we used the references a great deal to do our research work. This is not just a reliability book; it is a table of contents of the world of reliability.

Do not buy this CRAM book........2007-01-22
If you want to understand and pass a subject, you have to read the original book (here Introduction to Statistical Quality Control by Montgomery) and try to understand the examples and the concepts in the book. In addition you have to do several exercies in this book to reinforce this understanding. Studying some outlines, highlights and notes prepared by other people won't help you much.

Great SPC book.......2004-08-14
Used this book in a graduate level course on SPC. The book and the excercises were interesting and highly informative, as are all of Dr. Montgomery's numerous texts. Most concepts are backed up with liberal examples to help understand the theory and cement the concept and their practical applications, and run the whole gamut from management to electrical engineering problems. Many of the tables in the back of the book, such as the random number table, are outdated due to computers, however these may have been dropped in the new version of the text.

the book is very good ..no doubt but the service is aweful.
1. on the website they show it is a hardcover book and so i ordered for it but got a soft cover book ...now i have to worry about return or refunds etc...
2. had to wait for 3 weeks to get the book.
3. print quality aweful ...the original book has good color print...the one i received for the same price has a black and white print with very thin see-through pages...
my advice would be to avoid abebooks.com through amazon if possible because the same book is listed for $ 33 on their own website and here they sell it for $ 41 ...so waste ur money if u want.
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about SPC.......2003-09-12
As the developer of the QI Macros SPC Software for Excel, customers often call with exotic questions about statistical methods for quality control.
Montgomery's book, more often than not, is the one I turn to for answers that I can't seem to find anywhere else. Even if I do find the answer in another book, it's always easier to understand in Montgomery's. The book is written in a way that makes seemingly incomprehensible statistics understandable. And there are plenty of examples.
If you're looking for a book to help you implement quality control in a small business, Montgomery's book is a bit too much, so you might consider my book on the Small Business Guerrilla Guide to Six Sigma or Six Sigma Simplified.

Light on content, disorganized.......2007-06-04
This book has some good sections, which are fine by themselves. However, I found the power chapters in the first part of the book to be disorganized and poorly written. The diagrams are not clear at all, and many have a lot of information in them that should have been removed. Almost like they did cut and paste without making them relevant to the text. Many diagrams are missing labels and annotations as well. There is a chapter on power quality that starts with a very dubious analogy about grades of gasoline and sports cars and the importance of using high quality power. Then the start of the next chapter says that modern equipment can use a large range of voltages and really power quality isn't important, availability of power is. Uh...great. So, I feel the continuity of the book was poor. I haven't finished everything, but so far, I am not impressed.
As far as the content that is there, I don't feel this is really an engineering oriented book. I didn't feel there were enough methods to really made decisions about availability or reliability, just general ideas, which we all have anyway (downtime is bad, uptime is good, etc).
I don't feel it really helps you understand WHY things are, mainly it rehashes industry best practices, which in many cases are driven by the vendors who are selling products used to increase services availability. There is an interesting appendix about the national power infrastructure, but it covers a lot of things that are already in the book, which is kinda strange. This is a collection of articles, not a book really.

When I read the introduction of this book It was immediately clear it did not begin with the basics of GD&T. The books introduction assumes you are familiar with the fundamental principals of this system. This book may be great for someone already GD&T experienced wishing to improve their skills. For the inexperienced looking to learn from the ground up I would look elsewhere.
A clear, comprehensive look at a difficult topic........2005-03-10
I am the author of this book. The book is now entering its twelfth printing and has sold tens of thousands of copies to universities, companies and individuals throughout the world. It not only contains all of the basics of dimensioning and tolerancing, but at 624 pages is long enough to show the reader how to apply the language of GD&T to single parts and assemblies. I constantly get emails and personal comments from readers telling me how much they love the book. One person in charge of GD&T at Daimler/Chrysler told me he couldn't imagine a better book on the topic. Another said his whole department relied on it for the answers to all their GD&T questions. I decided to write in because there were two "reviews" listed by Amazon customers. One reviewer liked the book and the other didn't. The one who didn't said he couldn't even understand the book's Foreword. Since all I wrote in the Foreword was that GD&T was a language of symbols and rules and then proceeded to thank the individuals who helped me construct the book, I had to wonder what could possibly have confused him. I just wanted the customers of Amazon to know this is a serious treatment of a difficult topic and one of the most comprehensive texts ever written about GD&T.

This book is poorly organized and written. Even the introduction requires the reader to understand material not yet introduced until later chapters. The author repeatedly alludes to subtleties and nuances which obscures clear meaning and hinders the learning process. The book is unreadable and I am returning it for credit.

I am in the automotive field and needed a source reference. This book is excellent not too technical and not too simple. I would recommend it for anyone who needs an understanding of GD&T.

Must reading for OO architects.......2001-10-01
This book is one-of-a-kind in that it addresses head on the thorny problems associated with object-oriented performance and scalability. The book is divided into seven parts, which include 16 chapters and two appendices.
Part I introduces software performance and the authors' software performance engineering (SPE) methodology. Although the book continues to drill down deeper into SPE and associated factors in subsequent chapters, this part of the book is my favorite. What makes it my favorite is the context in which the authors cast performance as a function of resource requirements (workload) and configuration (capacity). Although this is not a new concept, the ensuing discussion leading to SPE modeling strategies and models and the 9-step SPE process exposes the challenges and provides a sense that OO performance can be managed through careful systems analysis, modeling and design early in the life cycle. I also like the way SPE is aligned to the "Unified Software Process", which is the RUP thinly disguised. The chapter that discusses this has some realm gems, including performance patterns and anti-patterns. In addition, the SPE is also aligned to UML, with an excellent discussion on extending the UML and some example scenarios that show how to specify time, concurrency and other performance characteristics.
The SPE models given in Part II cover the full spectrum of system types, including distributed and web-based systems. The material is highly technical and requires close attention. It is also clearly written and will provide the design team (not to mention the post-implementation support team) with analytical techniques and an effective analysis approach to performance management. The highlights of this part of the book were the way middleware overhead is taken into account, scenarios and modeling hints.
Data collection is the topic of Part III and is covered in detail. The chapters I most liked in this part included resource estimation techniques and software measurement and instrumentation. Part IV will be the focal point for designers and architects in that it addresses performance solutions. Chapter topics include: performance-oriented design, performance patterns and performance anti-patterns(excellent material!) and implementation solutions. The latter covers performance tuning, as well as language-dependent and -independent solutions for OO software. The two languages discussed are c++ and java.
Part V is devoted to applications and provides a thorough discussion of web and realtime embedded system performance issues. The format of the two chapters in this part include: performance issues, SPE models, environments and constraints. Realtime systems are given a more in-depth treatment because of the special nature of these systems. I liked the case study that used a telephone switching system for realtime systems because I have professional interests in that area.
The actual steps for implementing SPE is the subject of Part VI, which covers the process, associated life cycle activities, post-deployment performance management and how to integrate SPE into your organization's software process. Part VII's two appendices are valuable. Appendix A covers UML notation and Appendix B covers SPE modeling notations. Both are useful as quick reference guides.
This is a comprehensive book that, while focused on a narrow topic, covers all issues and factors in minute detail. The book complements two other outstanding works, Software Reliability Engineered Testing by John D. Musa, and Testing Object-Oriented Systems by Robert V. Binder. Although the latter books are more focused on testing, the material dovetails nicely with the SPE approach given in this book.

Testing is usually the most expensive, time-consuming and difficult activity during the development of engineering products and systems. Development testing must be performed to ensure that designs meet requirements for performance, safety, durability, reliability, statutory aspects, etc. Most manufactured items must be tested to ensure that they are correctly made. However, much of the testing that is performed in industry is based upon traditions, standards and procedures that do not provide the optimum balance of assurance versus cost and time. There is often pressure to reduce testing because of the high costs involved, without appreciation of the effects on performance, reliability. etc. Misperceptions are commonplace, particularly the idea that tests should not stress products in excess of their operating levels.
The main reason for this situation seems to be that engineers have not developed a consistent philosophy and methodology for testing. Testing is seldom taught as part of engineering curricula, and there are no books on the subject. Specialist areas are taught, for example fatigue testing to mechanical engineers and digital device testing to electronics engineers. However, a wide range is untaught, particularly multidisciplinary and systems aspects. Testing is not just an engineering issue. Because of the importance and magnitude of the economic and business aspects testing is an issue for management. Testing is perceived as a high cost activity, when it should be considered as a value-adding process.
The objective of this book is, therefore, to propose a philosophy of engineering test and to describe the necessary technologies and methods that will provide a foundation for all plans, methods and decisions related to testing of engineered products and systems. The book will help those who must manage and conduct this most difficult and uncertain task. It will also provide a text which can be used as the basis for teaching the principles of testing to all engineering students.

Critial information.......2002-07-23
It is the very first book (that I'm aware of) written for test engineers and managers. This book is an overview of all types of testing.
The author's philosophy is excellent.....

When you consider that Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, the Comet IV and the Challenger failed not because of negligence, but because critical data slipped through the cracks, or was misinterpreted, this book may just prevent that next tragic unknown from taking place. Or at least arm engineers, and managers, as to what is taking place.
Highly recommended, from one in the business.
A survey of test methods.......2002-01-21
I bought this book seeking practical information relating to testing of manufactured PCB assemblies. I found relatively little information on that subject, and the information I did find was of a general nature.
I got the impression that if you are interested in a survey of issues dealing with mechnaical failures, you might find more to like in this book.

Good ideas, but fails to follow through.......2006-03-07
The book categorizes software testing for security defects into attacks on software dependencies, user interfaces, design and implementation. The book focuses on 19 attacks (one being "overflow input buffers"), which form the core of the book. Parts 2 and 3 of the book explain when and how to apply each attack and what faults they find. Part 4 takes a more hands-on look at how to perform the testing.
In my opinion, the book is too dependent on the Holodeck 1.3 program provided on the CD. Rather than explaining security testing in a tool agnostic way, the book often simply explains how to use Holodeck to perform an attack. I use Linux and Holodeck is Windows only, so it was useless to me. Reviewer Yvonne Eu said the tool did not work in her test environment. Holodeck is currently maintained by Security Innovation who charge $1495 for a single user license, but they also offer a 30 day evaluation license. If the version on the CD does not work for you, these are your two options. The book is a lot less useful if Holodeck does not work for you, so bear this in mind.
The focus on Holodeck also limits the scope of the book. The use of other types of tools such as web proxies, port scanners and tools to exercise user interfaces is not adequately covered.
Finally, I was disappointed by chapter 6, which looks at security testing three applications: Windows Media Player 9.0, Mozilla 1.2.1 (for Windows), and OpenOffice 1.0.2 (for Linux). This is an ideal opportunity to dive down and show how security testing tools should be applied, common pitfalls, and hands-on techniques for finding security issues. Instead, the chapter only explains how attacks should be planned and goes no deeper.
If you are new to security testing and want an overview of some common types of tests that should be run, this book will be useful. If you are interested in using Holodeck for your testing, this book will also be useful. If you do not fall into these categories, there are other books which are a better fit. If you want more detail, I recommend trying one of the Hacking Exposed series.
Holodeck rules! - Does it?.......2005-10-28
The whole book feels like a promotion for Holodeck tool. Some of the chapters are very straightforward: boot your AUT (Application Under Test) from Holodeck and see what happens. However, the version of the tool supplied with the book isn't supported by anybody and, sure enough, it doesn't work with my AUT. The supported one is above $1K for single user licence...
Though as much as I appreciate the general ideas about blackbox security testing Whittaker is voicing in this book, I feel it's just not enough there for its price. :(

I'm the type of person who won't buy a tech book unless it's worth reading and referring to, and it didn't take much skimming to realize this was going to be worth it. My opinion hasn't changed since finishing it. I had a specific need for information on non-web application penetration (security) testing and I was surprised to find exactly what I needed in this book, and in a short, easy-to-read package including a CD with two unique tools to help apply what it teaches.
If you're a software tester or in the software quality assurance field, especially if you're interested in security, you need to read this book as it will likely be an eye-opener. It's not full of shocking anecdotes to scare developers into writing better software, it's a handbook of what to look for when testing software after you think you've done all your testing, and at the same time gives developers and project managers good information on how to design, code, and state requirements better.
If you're a security person, especially the burgeoning field of application security, you might also find this book pretty enlightining. Everyone's heard of penetration testing and vulnerability assessment, but typically only in the context of attacking remotely over a network. This book shows you how to attack the (more traditional?) software on your local machine, but not to the level of detail or geekiness of "shellcoding."
While I feel the cover price is a bit steep for such a thin book, especially given the amount of "filler" like illustrations, blank pages, figures, etc., the content is superb and the writing style makes it easy to read. I also appreciate that the points made and examples used tend to get me thinking and I'm able to apply the concepts right away--maybe it's just my "tinkerer" mindset but this book seems to encourage the reader to think outside the box and experiment, which I like. I don't give many 5-star ratings but I think this book deserves it.
Whittaker strikes again!.......2004-05-31
The software community has been awaiting for a book like this. It's a almost perfect intro to software security concepts. Again, Whittaker keeps it low in pages and words. In my opinion, the way books should be written (except ones purely theoretical).
Once again Whittaker approachs is hands-on examples. Even if some examples don't apply to modern software the idea behind you is to get you thinking. I've applied the techniques in this book with extremely great results.

James Whittaker has taken the approach and the tools he introduced in "How to Break Software: A Practical Guide to Testing" (ISBN 0201796198), and has teamed with coauthor Herbert Thompson to adapt them to security testing. In this book the software under test (or attack, since that is the underlying approach) is primarily in the Microsoft environment. That the principles can be applied to any operating system or environment is evident in one scenario where Linux-based OpenOffice is attacked. The the fault model provided early in the book can form the basis for any software test strategy with a goal to uncover and exploit vulnerabilities.
The approach itself is to create a plan, then systematically attack. The areas of vulnerability covered include unanticipated input scenarios (which, even after decades, is still an exposure in too many applications and operating systems), find and attack design flaws and implementation anomalies, and leave no potential vulnerability untested. Among these are the usual exposed ports and default names; however, there are exploits based on data, time stamping and other less common areas that are overlooked by testing professionals - and that is one of the main audiences of this book.
While the techniques and the approach in this book are sound, I would have liked the attacks presented as formal test cases, which would be more meaningful to the testing professionals who will benefit the most from this book. However, the authors do introduce the concept of security testing as an element of QA, adding to the small (but hopefully growing) body of knowledge to be used by QA. I recommend this book, as well as "Exploiting Software: How to Break Code" (ISBN 0201786958) as two books that should be read and used by software testing practitioners. The information combined in these books will-if put into practice-significantly improve the quality and security of software that is released into production.

This book is a need item to help trouble shoot problems with boiler, DA tanks, condensate return tanks,pumps, and piping. If you can see the problem, you will probably see a picture of the problem in this book along with what caused it...and in color 95 percent of the time. It has been a real life saver, literlly. You gotta have this book even if you only use it once..it could save your life, or your building/s. Try it ..you will like it. My instructor in 2 grade class was so impressed it got one.
