During my years as Structural Calculyst this book was always on my right side on my desk, and when I needed it, it was ready to help me find my way. One really very good Engineer has never found all formulas in his head, instead he should be able of finding them out on good references and really know how to use
them all. This is the best reference book you are going to find when formulas is your subject, just buy it!
The only book I know better than this one is written in German and few people are able to read in German, so!

Very helpful book in engineering job, but unfortunately I've found some mistake (the reason for 4 stars).

In general you can find lot of formulas in this book. This book is also very well known and that's the reason for recommending it. You can just refer to Roark's formulas and everybody knows what's that.

I have three editions of this book: the classic 4th edition, the useless 5th edition and this, the 7th edition.

The 4th edition has simple format, is easy to use, but lacks methods for more sophisticated hand analyses and is sparse on explanations. The 5th is best used for a doorstop.

This edition is an excellent combination of the usefullness of the 4th edition with modern and more advanced methods.
The layout of each section has excellent explanatory material and provides the simple 4th edition type equations backed with more involved/advanced formulas which are very useful.

My hat is off to the authors. This is probably the best reference for those nasty stress and deflection hand calculations we all have to do from time to time.

Roark's has been and remains an excellent resource for the structural engineer and designer regardless of the edition. This is a referance I use on a daily basis. Typically the first book I reach for.

Hibbeler is probably the most reliable author when it comes to Mechanics of Materials. A must have for Mechancial, Environmental, Civil and Materials Engineers. Explains everything in the easiest and most practical matter, without skipping anything of value.

Simple, concise, great examples, great illustrations, great problems. The style is: present a topic briefly, derive equation(s) quickly, show 3-4 examples of using said equation(s), give a couple dozen problems, and move right on to the next topic. Thanks Mr. Hibbeler, for making engineering students' lives just a bit easier.

Hibbeler offers an undergraduate text for the mechanical engineering student. The materials studied are solids, not fluids. The discussion starts with the simplest case of treating the bodies as totally rigid. Then we see a development of Newtonian mechanics, commencing with statics. No net velocities, in some obvious reference frame.

But even in this simple case, Hibbeler shows the student how to find the balance of forces in such archetypal instances as beams.

Later, he talks about how solids can to varying extents resist stresses. Be these longitudinal or torsional stresses. The resultant stress-strain relationships are a fundamental concept in mechanics, and the student should be able to follow the treatment quite adequately.

I was a pre-engineering student in Seattle. This book have plenty of examples in which I can follow step by step. The homework problems are useful, practical and innovative in this book. It help us to visualize the practical problems outside the school. Thus, this is very helpful for the engineering students, especially Civil and structral, to build up the fundamental concept of materials.

Nevertheless, this class is not easy. It is hard to undersatnd the concept of Materials for the beginner. It is very helpful for students to have peer group or ask for your professor to have further explanations or examples.

This is a good book on a very difficult subject. It was the text book for one of my harder engineering classes. The book does a pretty decent job of explaining theroies, and the worked example problems are done pretty good. My only complaint is that the worked examples are quite easy compared to the homework problems. Homework problems require lots of time, thinking, and MORE time. Overall i thought the material was pretty interesting. Good Luck

2 out of 5 stars Hard to Follow and Needs More Examples.......2001-10-09

I'm a pre-engineering student taking a mechanics of materials course at a local community college. I find this book tough to follow along and understand. I read through a section, and ask myself what I read, and I dunno.

I have found it easier to understand in other textbooks with many more examples, but simple ones. With a half-dozen or so examples for each chapter, it makes the later problems way more difficult. Difficult is good, sometimes, if a student can understand more than just the basics in that section.

I believe why many textbooks (engineering and physics [see Haliday and Resnick]) are tough to follow and understand is to "weed out" many students. Letting the ones who adapt well to the writing/teaching style of the text go on. I myself really want to understand this material, and go on in engineering.

I agree with another reviewer somewhere, which says that having more than one text helps your understanding. I had to buy another book when I was learning C++ and I understood a lot more. In this case, I will buy another textbook, because I'm having a hard time (and so are many of my classmates) reading this book. On a side note, nor does it help to have an instructor who's teaching style does not work for you.

And at least a partial Solution Manual would be extremely helpful to students, 'cause, the examples are not extensive enough.

Having read and used several books in this area, my favorite one is this book. While studying for my PE last year in Mechanical Engineering, I tried to use Gere and Timoshenko, but found it to be difficult to read. I was familiar with R.C. Hibbeler's Engineering Mechanics books, and liked his writing style and resulting "ease of presenting technical engineering topics in a readable format with many examples and practical problems." So I got a copy of this book and found it to be very well organized, very readable, very good figures and illustrations, and very practical and useful. So I would highly recommend this book to all, along with R.C. Hibbeler's other books.

Average or below average book. Examples are somewhat useful. Often incorrect answers in the back. Have used 3rd and 4th edition. Not much has changed expect for the problems.

The last new substantial advance in basic mechanics of materials (the concept of shear center) was 80 or so years ago. Buy this new overpriced edition of the textbook only if required to for school. Den Hartog's "Strength of Materials" or an earlier version of Beer & Johnson or Popov will save you money without sacrificing any content.

The book explained the concepts of the subject well enough, but the number of typos in the problems and in the answer key led to many hours of frustration. I was often under the impression I was doing something wrong, only to find out the givens in a problem had incorrect prefixes, or some other error.

This book is excellent. I was educated as a nuclear engineer, but seem to constantly be drawn into mechanical problems in the power plant. I bought this book to teach myself mechanics of materials so I could develop a finite element analysis program to analyze turbine generator component stress' and strains.

The book is well organized and well written. The examples are good, and the homework problems are hard enough to make you think.

My only suggestion, for other non-mechanical engineers who buy this book to learn this material, is that you also have a engineering statics book available for reference when solving the homework problems in chapter one and two.

I became familiar with this outstanding text when my son took a strength of materials course at the University of Texas at Austin. As a Professional Structural Engineer, I understood the importance of this course in the engineering curriculum. Also, I know from experience that many good students have trouble mastering the material. So I bought a copy so I could help my son by telephone. I am familiar with all the major texts in this subject including the classic book by Gere and Timoshenko and the popular text by Beer and Johnston.

I was immediately impressed with the Craig book. The text has clear discussions and explanations and a masterful emphasis on the three fundamentals of structural mechanics: equilibrium, material behavior and geometry of deformation. For my money it is head and shoulders above the Gere and Timoshenko and the Beer and Johnston texts. Not that they are bad books; but the Craig book is a much better book. The Beer and Johnston text is largely a cookbook approach. The emphasis is on learning specific methods to solve specific types of problems. The Gere and Timoshenko text is a virtual strength of materials encyclopedia. No book in this field has a more thorough discussion of beams. But what students (and practicing engineers) need most is where the Craig text has no peer: 1)clear, simple explanations with an emphasis on equilibrium, material behavior, and geometry of deformation and 2)a rational and logical problem solving procedure that shows students how practicing engineers approach real-world problems. A student who learns the material in this book will have solid basis for becoming a competent engineer and for more advanced work in structural mechanics.

Some of the strengths of this text include:

1. A graphic-based menu-driven computer program that includes for modules for beams, section properties, solution of simultaneous linear algebraic equations, plotting shear and moment diagrams, and plotting of Mohr's circles for stress and strain. The output from one module can be imported to the other modules. This is very user-friendly software. It can be used to solve homework problems and for carrying out iterative design solutions.

2. Emphasis on a rational and logical four-step problem-solving procedure including flow charts. The procedure includes planning the solution as well as reviewing the solution for reasonableness. Making these two steps an ingrained habit is essential to being a competent and proficient structural engineer.

3. Repeated emphasis on the three fundamental concepts of structural mechanics: equilibrium, deformation behavior of materials, and geometry of deformation. Part of becoming a competent engineer is making these three concepts second nature and learning to apply them in a skillful manner.

4. The use of force-method and displacement-method concepts; understanding these concepts is essential in more advanced work in structural mechanics.

5. All of the traditional mechanics of materials subjects are covered including what I consider the best, most through discussion of strain found in any of the popular texts on this subject. The discussion of strain includes a thorough explanation of the concept of deformation diagrams and strain-displacement analysis.

6. An introductory chapter that reviews the concept of static equilibrium and relates it to the equilibrium of deformable bodies.

7. A superior discussion of stress concentrations and failure theories.

8. Exceptionally clear discussions of stress and strain in beams.

9. The illustrations in the Craig text are clearly superior to the illustrations in the competitive texts.

10. Appendix A includes a valuable discussion of the use of power series approximation formulas. The approximations are useful in strain-displacement analysis because they allow the reduction of complex, nonlinear strain-displacement equations to linear, small-displacement forms.

11. The Craig book comes across to me as a book written by someone who passionately cares about his subject and really wants his students to understand the subject. Not just to learn enough problem solutions to pass the course. I get the impression that this book was a labor of love by the author. If an engineering student can pick up on that he has to believe that this is an important subject to master, not just to pass. The writing in the competitive texts comes across as somewhat stale. Maybe they have been through so many editions they just are not fresh and have become another job for the authors.

1. Emphasis on fundamentals - slower-paced in the beginning where engineering books should be. 2. Does not waste space on advanced topics such as thick,curved beams, etc. 3. Exception to 2 (above): Gives a brief introduction to the finite element method which is vital to today's stress engineer. Includes a 4-page insert of photos of FEM models. 4. Does not use complicated matrix and tensor notation. 5. Uses concepts of equilibrium. stress-strain, and geometric compatibility where possible. 6. Provides a systematic, 4-step, problem-solving procedure which includes a review of the solution (something many engineers don't do enough) 7. Comprehensive discussion of strain. 8. Numerous examples and HW problems. 9. Comes with a CD-ROM containing an award-winning program called MDSolids which has numerous modules for problem solving of beams, trusses, Mohr's circle, properties, etc. It is the most user-friendly software I have ever used, and I have used a lot of software over 30 years. The CD has built-in examples for learning the material, but the modules also allow you to input your own problems. For example, the Beam Module allows you to break up a beam into up to 10 finite elements with generic loads on each element. Output values are tabulated and plotted for shear, moment, slope, and deflection.An added feature is that you can import values from one module into another. For example, you can use the Properties Module to calculate area and moments of inertia, and then import those values into the Beam Module. The CD alone is worth the price of the book.

I have used the first edition and was generally pleased. The second edition, however, is unacceptable. The rewrite added a few interesting and a few less useful topics. The problems at the end of each section were changed but the answer key referred, in many cases, to the the first edition. Sometimes the solutions were large deviations from the stated problem. There were occasional proof reading errors, far too many for a major text. The students were frequently frustrated in their efforts to justify the answer to the problem as stated.

As a college instructor, I try to choose texts based on quality, but with consideration of price. I thought this book was a good compromise, but wish I had kept my previous text. This has way too many errors for a 2nd edition, and has received considerable critisism from my students for being hard to follow. There are better choices out there.

The approach in this book is a lot different than that which engineering students will learn in their Physics classes. This book uses a lot of calculus once you get past chapter seven, so make sure you have taken at LEAST up to Calculus III before you embark on the wonderous journey of attempting to understand shear and moment diagrams.

And there's a sufficient number of errors in the chapter two, three, and I think chapter six solutions. Make sure you ask your professor about them.

Not too terribly hard to get through, though. If you're studious and intelligent, you'll be fine.

    I bought this book about 4 months ago for my Statics class at university. The book is well organized and the concepts as well as the examples are easy to follow. I have found it to be a very good reference especially if one is learning some of the concepts mentioned in the book from scratch. There is a sufficient number of examples and problems for one to digest the material.

    On the downside, the book does not have the feel of a general purpose reference book and should be regarded as a textbook that is to be followed in order to learn the material inside.
