Five Stars With no Doubt........2007-03-15
During my years as Structural Calculyst this book was always on my right side on my desk, and when I needed it, it was ready to help me find my way. One really very good Engineer has never found all formulas in his head, instead he should be able of finding them out on good references and really know how to use
them all. This is the best reference book you are going to find when formulas is your subject, just buy it!
The only book I know better than this one is written in German and few people are able to read in German, so!
very useful handbook.......2007-01-04
Very helpful book in engineering job, but unfortunately I've found some mistake (the reason for 4 stars).
In general you can find lot of formulas in this book. This book is also very well known and that's the reason for recommending it. You can just refer to Roark's formulas and everybody knows what's that.
Great Reference Tool.......2006-10-29
This Book contains every fromula that i would ever need during my Mechanical Engineering Course.
It is quite easy to use, and the print is clear the index is user friendly
Well Thought Out Upgrade from Previous Editions.......2006-04-18
I have three editions of this book: the classic 4th edition, the useless 5th edition and this, the 7th edition.
The 4th edition has simple format, is easy to use, but lacks methods for more sophisticated hand analyses and is sparse on explanations. The 5th is best used for a doorstop.
This edition is an excellent combination of the usefullness of the 4th edition with modern and more advanced methods.
The layout of each section has excellent explanatory material and provides the simple 4th edition type equations backed with more involved/advanced formulas which are very useful.
My hat is off to the authors. This is probably the best reference for those nasty stress and deflection hand calculations we all have to do from time to time.
Excellent resource.......2005-10-01
Roark's has been and remains an excellent resource for the structural engineer and designer regardless of the edition. This is a referance I use on a daily basis. Typically the first book I reach for.
Book Description
Using a design-oriented approach that addresses geotechnical, structural, and construction aspects of foundation engineering, this book explores practical methods of designing structural foundations, while emphasizing and explaining how and why foundations behave the way they do. It explains the theories and experimental data behind the design procedures, and how to apply this information to real-world problems.
Covers general principles (performance requirements, soil mechanics, site exploration and characterization); shallow foundations (bearing capacity, settlement, spread footings -- geotechnical design, spread footings -- structural design, mats); deep foundations (axial load capacity -- full-scale load tests, static methods, dynamic methods; lateral load capacity; structural design); special topics (foundations on weak and compressible soils, foundation on expansive soils, foundations on collapsible soils); and earth retaining structures (lateral earth pressures, cantilever retaining walls, sheet pile walls, soldier pile walls, internally stabilized earth retaining structures).
For geotechnical engineers, soils engineers, structural engineers, and foundation engineers.
Customer Reviews:
Great for Reference.......2001-01-25
This book starts with a great review of the basics of soil mechanics, and then discusses a wide range of topics such as foundations, bearing walls, footings, deep footings, and many more. Unlike other books, this book is not strictly theory; you can easily apply and understand what this book teaches. It also provides good examples.
Thumbs Up!.......1999-12-03
This is the most practical and comprehensive source for understanding foundations and their design...

Book Description
Intended as an introductory text in soil mechanics, the sixth edition of Das, Principles of Geotechnical Engineering, offers an overview of soil properties and mechanics, together with coverage of field practices and basic engineering procedure. With more figures and worked out problems than any other text on the market, this text also provides the background information needed to support study in later design-oriented courses or in professional practice.

great condition, a little damage due to shipping.......2005-09-23
looks great, feels great, smells great. minor damage on the binder from shipping.
This is a great intro book on Soil Mechanics........2004-01-10
I just finished taking a intro Soil Mechanics class using this book. We completed all 16 chapters which is quite a feat for any engineering class.
I thought the book was very good at laying out the conceptual aspects of soil mechanics and it was very easy to read through, espcially for an engineering book. The book has lots of illustrations and pictures (B&W). The books chapter layout was a little bass ackwards (Ch 11-14). The book has a fair amount of sample problems, at least one for every concept. However Engineering students regarding solved problems are like crack addicts on the streets, you can never have enough of what you desire.
I would actually rate this book a 4.5/5.0......but I had to round up.
Much to be desired........2000-08-09
I first bought this book as a required text for a couple of my modules in school. This book is very effective when it comes to presenting the mathematical formula, examples and graphs. However, the discussions of tests and soil behaviour left much to be desired.
This book would be suitable for people who just started on soil mechanics.

Book Description
As one of the most popular heat transfer texts, Jack Holman's HEAT TRANSFER is noted for its clarity, accessible approach, and inclusion of many examples and problem sets. The new Ninth Edition retains the straight-forward, to-the-point writing style while covering both analytical and empirical approaches to the subject. Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on physical understanding while, at the same time, relying on meaningful experimental data in those situations that do not permit a simple analytical solution. New examples and templates provide students with updated resources for computer-numerical solutions.
Customer Reviews:
The Good and the Bad.......2005-02-27
The Good:
- A nice amout of examples.
- Whatever is explained is explained pretty well.
- Friendly style of writing.
The Bad:
- No solution manual.
- Some mistakes in the solved examples.
The Worst:
- There is no focus on the heat transfer sceince itself - the equations are "dumped" on you with no explanations/development or even some example experiments that were made to get to the equations. The focus is on application of the equations to engineering problems and methods of solving differential equations.
The bottom line:
This book will not give you an understanding of the heat transfer science, but the ability to solve heat transfer problems. If that's what you look for - this is your book. Otherwise, look for something else.
Why only five stars?.......2004-07-24
This book is a winner . Forget about any other substitute . In this detailed text you will find all you want about every ine of the multiple equations about the heat transfer , clearly and powerful illustrated . The level of the problems are gradually increased so when you decide to solve them you will become in a real gladiator in this topic .
I recommend it deeply . Since I acquired it I noticed the little difference that makes the great difference . This is a heavyweight text and hardly you will find out another better than this .
A must for Chemical , Mechanical and Industrial engineers!
A League of Its Own.......2004-01-23
In Holman's (the author) spirit I'll keep this simple. This text (along with Moran/Shapiro's introductory text in thermodynamics) is among the best textbooks met during the course of a civil, aerospace or mechanical enginnering study. The language used constitutes what should be an "industrial standard" for engineering textbooks. It keeps the level of attention peaking by avoiding loose talk and wordy explanations where this is not required. This is (academic) litterature in its truest sense. I own about 50 science/engineering texts within fluid mechanics, solid mechanics/dynamics, mathematics, physics and more. Among these, this book is top three - no small feat.
textbook critic.......2003-11-30
This is a required classical text in most senior Mechanical Engineering programs. However, it was a difficult text to get through especially the sketchy discussed complex mathematical material -- if one is not well versed in Partial Differential Equations.
For most students, the text's analytical developments are difficult to grasp in the beginning since the author was inclinded to stay with the typical old style in writing engineering texts where as little as possible is given to the students!
I hope we're getting away from this rediculous old writing style and methodologies which ultimately needlessly blocks many good students from doing well or graduate.
Engineering textbook writers are slowly getting away from this horrible old style, by providing more comprehensive examples and making solutions manuals available to those students who wish to purchase them.
But, here I think that real market forces that brought about some needed change was the popular Schaum Outlines and REAs solution books -- giving the students what they really needed to do problems. So authors slowly began competing with these growing anciliary technical products!
Please note, in the past years, it was almost inhuman what technical students had to endure to get through their required courses to graduate.
Author J. P. Holman began in the 1960's with a really sketchy Heat Transfer textbook assuming students undestood the analytical proofs and then slowly began to make changes that gave the students more information in which to understand the complex analytical Partial Differential Equation derivations and solutions. The concepts of heat flow are not difficult it is the mathematics, the assumptions and the numerous steps reaching a solutions that is wild.
Hopefully, someday, we'll get away altogether from technical textbooks, which are inherently a 2-Dimensional medium, and move to modern medias that easily allow authors to write textbooks having 3-Dimensional data so students can quickly see and understand what the author is trying to convey.
Most technical courses deal with 3-Dimensional information so it is appropraite that authors move to new mediums soon and finally wean ourselves from technical textbooks altogether.

A classical. Required reading for heat transfer design in heater convection sections. I found it simple and practical. By the way, I am looking for a new book (as mine was stolen).

Book Description
Thisbook will be of interest to mechanical engineers, aerospace engineers, and engineering science and mechanics faculty. The main objective of the book is to present a mathematically rigorous approach to vibrations, one that not only permits efficient formulations and solutions to problems, but also enhances understanding of the physics of the problem. The book takes a very broad view approach to the subject so that the similarity of dynamic characteristics of vibrating systems will be understood.
Customer Reviews:
The most comprehensive graduate level vibration's book.......2001-01-22
starting with linear systems and dynamics, this book covers every single topic in the theory of vibrations. chapter 4 has a fantastic discussion of lyapunov stability.
Probably the best vibration textbook ever written........2000-04-06
Starting from SDOF discrete vibration analysis, MDOF, to distributed parameter system analysis, this book covers all important aspects in vibration analysis. In this book you can find most of the vibration analysis techniques necessary to understand the publications in this area.
Only problem is the treatment of Rayleigh quotient. This book shows the Rayleigh quotient and its properties only for discrete systems but not for continuous systems.
If this book reorganizes the topics in conservative systems versus nonconservative systems rather than discrete systems versus continuous systems, and this book is written in more general manner, it will be even more appreciated.

Book Description
Noise and Vibration Control Engineering: Principles and Applications, Second Edition is the updated revision of the classic reference containing the most important noise control design information in a single volume of manageable size. Specific content updates include completely revised material on noise and vibration standards, updated information on active noise/vibration control, and the applications of these topics to heating, ventilating, and air conditioning.
Customer Reviews:
Good source for more information.......2007-10-05
Noise and Vibration Control Engineering: Principles and Applications looks to be a good source for a second book on noise control. By second book I mean a follow up to a good introductory book on Architectural Acoustics by Egan, Long, or Mehta et al. Long's book is very thourough.
Each Chapter is written by a recognized expert in the field. It covers theory, mathematical models, and some application.
While a few of the chapters are general, and many of them relate to building noise, the subject is not limited to buildings. As an example there is coverage of jet engine noise generation and propagation. I have only read it in sections to date, and am satisfied with it.
BTW - A good source for a hands on, non-theoretical approach is from ASHRAE, "A Practical Guide to Noise and Vibration Control for HVAC Systems".
Practical Use of Noise and Vibration Control Engineering.......2001-06-29
The book has some very practical suggestions and formulas that can be used to control noise in real engineering problems. This it does by first reviewing the basic terms, definitions and international standards in acoustics. Several practical formulas for design of noise control systems are discussed and given in the text. Formulas for calculation of sound propagation in various practical situations are also given. I recommend this book to people who have an interest in reducing noise in most practical problems.
The book is also suitable to students in mechanical, aerospace, automotive, electrical, environmental, highways and building engineering who have an interest in acoustics or noise control problems. The book is however not suitable as a class textbook as not many formulas are derived neither are there many worked examples or tutorial problems that can assist a student to prepare for examinations.

best refrigeration book ever.......2007-01-07
This is the best refrigeration book in the market, highly technical but still easy to understand, come with a very good explanation about food preservation methods and spoilage factors, the refrigeration aspect are deep, slightly conceptual but mostly practical, a most have for anyone that want to gain true understanding of refrigeration and thermodynamics.
Great Review for all Refrigeration Technicians........2006-09-14
A great reference book for all HVAC technicians, interested in the entery-level refrigeration repair area .Relates the basics,in full detail. An excellent review of refrigeration hardware and applied principles.Rather than guessing at the chapter questions ,it does have an answer-checker,to verify your homework.Although,I don't think you would want to carry this around,in your trunk. It's a good library study-guide and for trouble-shooting residential refrigetaion non-operations.
A refrigeration Techs Must Have.......2000-08-08
This book covers all the details! I use this book everyday as refrence material. It covers everything from the basics, but also gets into complicated 2 stage design, and other design areas. From A-Z this book has it. If you are a refrigeration Engineer/ Operator this is a must for the text collection.
In depth basics to complicated analysis of refrigation cycle.......1998-12-10
In understanding the refrigeration cycle, Roy Dossat had 25 years in the field before teaching at the University of Houston. I was fortunate to attend the course taught by him in the 70's. It showed the man had much to offer even to the less experienced technician who needed to start on the basics. This book is easy to understand and a nice read for those who need answers to the complicated use of refrigerant and applications that drive the business. Refrigerant application is in constant change as environmental demands alter our lives. This book is a fundamental foundation and should be on the reference shelf of all engineers and technicians that want a straight foward understanding of the refrigeration cycle. debien@flash.net

Principles of Fracture Mechanics.......2003-08-16
"Principles of Fracture Mechanics" is the most concise yet complete survey on the equations and history of fracture mechanics I have found. Professor Sanford does an excellent job explaining how complex analysis is used to derive many of the equations governing the fracture of metals, without bogging the reader down in the mathematical details. I found the book to be enlightening. After reading it, I also found myself wishing I could have taken a course in fracture mechanics from Professor Sanford when I was in college.
An Excellent Teacher.......2003-05-01
Alright, I've haven't read the final book. I do have an unfinished version that Professor Sanford distributed when I took this class from him at the U of Maryland. The initial version was excellent. I had tried to slog through other presentations on fracture mechanics and had gotten lost in the details.
Rather than just presenting the stress intensity factor and other concepts, he gave a good historical development of just where these quantities came from and why anyone would or should use them to predict time to failure.
Book Description
This book is a modern treatment of the aerodynamic principles of helicopters and rotating-wing vertical lift aircraft. Part one covers the technical history of helicopter flight, basic methods of rotor aerodynamics, and performance-related design issues. Part two contains advanced topics in helicopter aerodynamics, including airfoil flows, unsteady aerodynamics, dynamic stall, rotor wakes, and rotor-airframe aerodynamic interactions. Part three contains chapters on autogiros and advanced aerodynamic analysis and a new chapter on the aerodynamics of wind turbines. The book is extensively illustrated and contains homework problems.
Customer Reviews:
A must have for all rotorcraft engineers.......2000-08-05
As an aerospace engineer I have read many books on rotorcraft and I must admit that this is the most up to date and useful text on rotorcraft that I have had the pleasure to read. There are many aspects of the text that stand out, however the one I found most useful, especially as a graduate student, was that the equations are derived from engineering basics and are accompanied by clear explanations of the principles involved. The text and equations are also supplimented by clear diagrams that serve to enhance understanding of the more complex topics covered. All in all a great book and one that I would highly recommend to both rotorcraft students and practicing engineers alike.
