Circuits.......2007-09-25
This book covers the first two levels of Engineering classes on circuit analysis. A great study aid and test prep.
textbook standard.......2007-09-20
This is the book that should be made as textbook for ECE textbook, instead of all those big, fat, and expensive ones. ECE textbooks should be like this! precise, to-the-point, clarity, lots of detailed examples! I hate schools that just want to make more profit from students by having them to buy those new expensive books. of course, there's no way to cover all those materials in those kinds of books.
Definately not introductory text.......2006-11-30
I gave it 4-stars because I can't really judge it, so I didn't want to affect the ratings already established. That said, I should have looked closer before purchasing it. I got about 1/3 of the way through an EE course in Community College before leaving to start my own business. So I was looking for a book to help me relearn and move forward on circuits since I still have alot of ideas. This is not it!!! The third paragraph in the book discusses plane angles and radians. It would not be fair to say the book assumes you have a knowledge of EE, it requires it.
So just don't make the same mistake I did.
decent materials but bad binding.......2006-10-16
The book itself is a decent collection of practice problems. However, I ended up with a copy that was stiched together improperly. For some reason, the first 32 pages appears twice, skipping the the second 32 pages of the book such that parts of chapter 3 and all of chapter 4 are completely missing. I couldn't return the item due to the policy of the seller regarding books lik Shaum's, but I was given the publisher's phone number. Let's hope I can get this resolved satisfactorily.
Excellent supplemental textbook on circuit analysis and design topics.......2006-07-22
This is an excellent study guide for electrical engineering students that will serve them well in their two-semester DC circuits sequence, linear circuits, electronic circuit design sequence, and power circuits. It is another one of those Schaum's outlines that is clear and complete enough to double as a textbook on the topic of circuit analysis and design. It starts out defining basic electric circuit concepts and terms such as potential, charge, current, resistance, capacitance, and inductance. It then moves on to circuit laws and then circuit analysis methods. It then explains the amplifier model in terms of components that have already been defined, and from there describes the operational amplifier and shows how to design using this device. The chapter on waveforms and signals is an excellent one, and is a topic often overlooked and shortchanged in most electrical engineering textbooks. The chapters on first-order and higher-order circuits do an excellent job of venturing into the world of linear RLC circuits and shows how to use calculus and differential equations to solve for the voltage and current equations of these types of circuits. Included also are more direct methods of analysis including complex frequency and pole-zero plots. The next major topic to be broached is that of analysis and design of power circuits. This is an often ignored subject in the electrical engineering curriculum, and the two chapters are good foundations on the topic. Besides just explaining polyphase power circuits, the outline actually takes the time to explain why such circuits are desirable when power generation is the goal. The next three chapters do some clean up on miscellaneous circuit analysis and design topics - frequency response, two-port networks and their characteristics, and mutual inductance and transformers, which is the basis of courses on electromechanical machines. The chapter on mutual inductance is the weakest chapter in the book, with less explanation than in the rest of the outline. There is a good chapter on using the industry standard Spice and PSpice software for circuit design. The final two chapters are applied chapters on the Laplace and Fourier transforms and their use in circuit analysis and design. For those whose basic mathematics may be rusty, the appendices cover basic matrix algebra and the mathematics of complex numbers.
I used the first edition of this outline in the late 70's to help iron out concepts that were not clearly presented in my undergraduate textbooks. I kept it around over the years to serve as a reference. I just recently upgraded to the current fourth edition, and the subject matter and organization of material has changed over the years but not the high quality of the content. I highly recommend this outline to undergraduate electrical engineering students who want a high quality supplemental textbook that will serve them from their sophomore year until graduation. One reviewer lamented that there were quite a few errors in the solved problem sections. However, this review was very old - 1999 I believe - and was written before this current fourth edition was written. I have not found any errors in the solutions so far, so apparently this latest edition has cleared up that past problem.

Really great supplemental text and source of problems.......2007-02-05
This book doubles as a cheap textbook on the subject it covers - electric machines and electromechanics. If I remember correctly, this was not one of the more difficult upper undergraduate Electrical Engineering courses, but that was because I had a very good instructor. The textbook itself was somewhat useless...and expensive. This text has plenty of well done narrative explaining all of the concepts. With this particular subject, good figures are important too, and they are plentiful in this Schaum's outline. Equations are all explained and presented well, with lots of example problems as well as solved exercises. I particularly liked the last chapter in the book on the electronic control of electric machines. It does a good job of merging what is really two subject matters and explains concepts well. It shows Electrical Engineering students that all of these courses don't exist in a vacuum. You are going to need to learn how to merge electromechanics, electronics, and digital systems into unified designs, and this book gets you started down that road. One reviewer said that he/she thought the outline was dated. I haven't found that to be true at all, at least for the situations where I've required some brushing up. The student should already have an understanding of electric and electronic circuits, basic electromagnetics, and calculus. Highly recommended.
Weak on PM Machines.......2005-05-08
Good book overall, but is getting dated. Most of the problems seem to be done in Gauss and Oersteds, and I don't believe there were any problems which used Neodemium magnets, which are most common in newer, high efficiency motors.
There was also very little on Permanent Magnet machines, about 6 pages, much of which was diagrams or descriptions of magnet types. Am still looking for a good book with problems on Permanent Magnet motors and generators.
Am using Hendershot and Miller's Design of Brushless Permanent Magnet Motors, which is very good. But it does not have many problems in it.
Helpful tool for electrical machine problems.......2000-05-29
I found that this book is a very useful source for solving problems related to elctrical machines. It provides clear and easy to follow instructions that are well laid out and easy to follow. It offers a varying level of problems ranging from the fundamentals through to the more complex machine problems. This is a useful aid or reference for anyone looking for a book to help them in their studies and wants to have more practice at solving problems relating to this subject.

Great study tool.......2007-04-11
Great explanations and fully worked out problems makes it a great study aid
Excellent Textbook Companion.......2006-10-29
I initially picked up this book to do remediation on my first circuit analysis course, and have continued to use it through the second course. I call the Shaum Series my "secret weapon" for doing well in EE classes (and physics too, actually). The few pages of exposition at the beginning of each chapter are clear, concise, and mostly complete (Electric Circuits by Nahvi is more rigorous), and the problems, half with detailed solutions and half with just answers, are on-topic, perfectly-tailored, and numerous.
If you are taking circuit analysis courses, EE or not, you would be a fool to not have this book in your bag.
Excellent supplement on the topic of circuit analysis.......2006-06-02
This is an excellent supplement for electrical technology and electrical engineering students taking a first course on circuit analysis. It is a particularly good companion to Boylestad's "Introductory Circuit Analysis", which is a standard circuit analysis text that has insufficient examples on several subjects. This outline starts with the analysis of DC resistive circuits, goes on to AC circuits, and also covers power circuits, transformers, and op-amps. There is a good chapter on complex numbers and phasors, an understanding of which is essential for the study of circuit analysis. There is no need of differential or integral calculus although the book uses derivatives in the chapters on capicitors, inductors, and transformers as needed for voltage-current relations. Even though there is not one integral shown in the book, the outline is still useful to engineers since circuit analysis courses mainly use only algebra.
This book also presents necessary tools such as PSPICE, the computer circuit analysis and simulation program for PC's. SPICE is the standard for analog circuit simulation across the electronics industry, and knowledge of its syntax is essential. The outline also covers the use of advanced scientific calculators in the context of solving actual problems.
Besides being a good source of examples and solved problems, this outline does a pretty good job of outlining the basic theory of circuit analysis. I highly recommend it.
Ground Zero Review.......2005-03-27
This book is an excellent starting point for the basics of electrical engineering. 30 years after graduating, I started with this book in preparing for the Professional Engineering exam. Many problems, with solutions, which solidifies the basic theory.
The best $15 I have ever spent!
Well written.......2004-04-10
BASIC CIRCUITS ANALYSIS - 2nd Edition - O'Malley
Not a bad book for students confronting analog circuit analysis for the 1st time. The book should also provide a comfortable review for someone who has been away from the subject for awhile
It is obvious that some thought went into this work. The book is without calculus, but the EE student should appreciate the crisp & clean presentation & find it a good companion to a more advanced course. It is often the insight & approach to solving these basic analog circuit analysis problems that are most important at this time & this book should help in that regard. As opposed to many technical books by this publisher, I found few errors; however I have not worked many of the problems - which are numerous. The book follows the Schaum Outline format: bare-bones introduction of a subject with some of the meat contained in the problems. This can result in one needing another sentence or two in the text to fill a hold, as in the chapter on Phasors, for example.
I do think the PSpice circuit analysis is over played a bit. The author does introduce the old MS-DOS text based system (with little explanation) where circuit node files must be written, compiled & run. I suspect that since Windows 95 & the wide distribution of PSpice 8.0 with the schematic capture front end, these more recent & useful features would now be in use in most institutions & work places.
However, the book is well worth the price & covers most of the subjects usually encountered in a 1st semester course of beginning analog circuit analysis plus a good introduction to Op-Amps. I recommend the book.

Poor execution of a good idea.......2006-07-19
The idea was to have the essentials of AC/DC circuit analysis, linear circuits, electronic circuits, digital logic circuit design, electromechanical machines, and control theory in one handy outline. The problem is, any one of these subjects is way too complex and deep as it is presented in most universities for the book to be helpful for undergraduate electrical engineering students. Also, on the whole, this material is far from basic. The material on electromechanical machines and control theory is usually taught in junior or senior undergraduate courses. Thus, this book would be most helpful to a professional or someone returning to graduate school for a master's degree in electrical engineering who needs some review on material that they have previously mastered but possibly forgotten. Unfortunately, as the other reviewer pointed out, this book is chock full of errors, thus rendering the book pretty much useless in the problem solving department. If a revised second edition of this book ever comes out with corrections to all of the current errors, I would recommend it to the target audience I have already mentioned, but definitely not to undergraduate engineers who are seeing this material for the first time.
Needs proofread, BADLY!.......2003-11-04
I'm presently using this as a textbook in an into-level EE class. The book is a great concept - give a book of problems and enough information on the theory to solve them, including some step-by-step examples. And, sometimes, it works well. What kills it are the repeated glaring errors in the answers it gives for the questions - so far, I'd venture to say that, after the first couple chapters, more then 10% of the answers are wrong, be it from swapping a sign someplace or an outright mistake in understanding on the part of the person who solved the problem. This makes the book uterly and totally unacceptable - it has as much potential to damage someone's knowledge of electronics as to teach the person.

help for the hardest transitional subject for undergrad EE students.......2005-12-26
For both physics and electrical engineering undergraduates alike, the one to two semester courses you take in electronics shall probably be a difficult transition regardless of how well you did in your circuit analysis course. This is largely due to the fact that nobody tells you WHY this subject is important (to produce nonlinear transfer functions & to perform power amplification- neither which can be accomplished with RLC circuits), or bothers to show you sufficient examples so that you can perform designs of your own. This Schaum's outline is an excellent companion to all of those electronics textbooks that are failing miserably. Other reviewers are right- as a practicing engineer you will probably never be called upon to bias a transistor to get a specified gain, or several other of the basic tasks that this outline goes over in detail. However, you won't be able to graduate until you master these techniques. As an example of its usefulness, I got a B in my first semester of electronics years ago, and for years I could not have told you the first thing about what went on in that class. It seemed that the students that really did well were part magician and part TV repairman. I bought this outline to learn what I should have mastered back in 1979, and the book made me understand the circuit design techniques involved plus brought me up-to-date in design and analysis techniques.
The outline does not talk about the semiconductor physics of electronic devices. Instead it concentrates on design techniques for circuits that incorporate the diode, BJT, FET, and operational amplifier, which are crafts you must master. Included in this outline is how to define an electronic circuit in PSPICE and the last chapter incorporates all you have learned throughout the book into the analysis and design of a switched mode power supply. I highly recommend this book as a supplement to undergraduate electronics textbooks.
not too bad.......2005-08-13
Concisely written, clear in presentation and all derivations. The solved problems are most of the time not horribly illustrative, but for the price of the book, I think the author did a very decent job
Could have been better.......2004-04-13
ELECTRONIC DEVICES & CIRCUITS, SECOND EDITION - CATHEY
It's always interesting to see how authors attempts to fill those niches between basic DC/AC circuit analysis with passive components and analog (linear) circuit design/analysis with active electronic circuit devices. Discounting the fact that this is, after all, an outline on the subject written as a supplement to your text, I'd give it a C+.
About 75% of the book is dedicated to diodes and transistor (all types) amplifier circuits. This is basic resistor biasing, find a load line, and establish the Q-point, kind of stuff. If you're studying to become an analog circuit designer, it is unlikely that ever, in your life, will you be called upon to design such a discrete transistor amplifier; however, this is a "row you'll have to hoe". So if you find yourself in the middle of a blizzard of transistor symbols, parameters, models, characteristics & configurations, this may be of some help; it's no silver bullet.
It would have been nice to have seen some introduction to 1) semiconductor physics, 2) current source biasing, 3) oscillators, 4) basic power supplies, 5) data conversion and 6) integrated circuits and etc.
Best help will be found in 1) DC and small signal examples of BJT and FET transistor design, 2) transistor modeling, 3) better than average SPICE examples, 4) and working with semiconductor parameters. There's a brief introduction to OP Amps and Switching Regulator power supplies. I didn't see a lot of errors and, with most Schaum's Outlines, there are plenty of practice problems.
If you are still looking for help, try looking at some of the books written by Thomas L. Floyd. One hardback - "Fundamentals of Linear Circuits" - now ten or more years old, can be picked up on the used book shelves for about what you will pay for this outline. His books that I've seen are more for the ET than the EE, however if you're looking for another down to earth view of basic analog circuits, I suggest you check it out.
My ebook experience.......2004-03-17
This is my first ebook, and it may be the last for a while. I was able to download the ebook from Amazon without trouble, but I was not able to transfer the ebook from one computer to another, because I couldn't get my Adobe Reader 6.0 activated. Unfortunately, I used my desktop computer to download the ebook, because it is connected to DSL. What I want is to have the ebook on my laptop (not connected to DSL, though), so I can read the ebook at work. The good news is that this ebook didn't cost very much. I also don't think this is Amazon's problem, but they happen to be the messenger.
So far I have read one page of the book, which is not neither good nor bad (meaning 2.5 stars). One of these days I'll get a hold of a hard copy and read the entire book.
Schaum's Outlines - Electronic Devices and Circuits.......1999-11-26
I have read the material through chapter 6, and believe it to be well-presented - concise yet thorough. I am troubled that some of the solved problems seem to have glaring errors. If I am wrong, I hope someone will correct me (If I were an expert in this field, there would be no point in buying the publication). On page 84, material is presented that indicates that for an n-channel MOSFET to be active, vgs must be greater than or equal to Vt. Solved problems 4.10 and 4.11 have solutions showing the MOSFET active with vgs
< Vt. Solved problem 4.12 appears to have a similar error. I am sympathetic to the difficulties of putting together such a publication and ensuring that it's void of errors. To me the solution is to post an errata sheet on the internet. I have contacted the publisher seeking an errata sheet for another book. Their response was basically, "thank you for bringing the errors to our attention, but no, we can't make the errata sheet available." It seems to me that posting of errata sheets on the net would enhance the value of McGraw-Hill's products. An alternative may be to sponsor a forum or chat-room for each book, so that users could compare thoughts. On the whole, I rate this publication a B- or C+. I have found this and other Schaum's Outlines to be helpful when used to augment other materials.

Book Description
Students can turn to this personal tutor to learn the basic mathematics they need as background for understanding electricity and electronics. They'll build their skills solving problems from following the hundreds of problems with detailed solutions. The handy appendixes give conversion factors, a table of American wire guages, natural trigonometric functions and more, making this an excellent reference.
Customer Reviews:
Good for technicians brushing up on math they need.......2007-01-14
This outline is not going to teach you a full course of algebra, trigonometry, or any particular branch of mathematics. Its reason for being is to teach the mathematics that technicians need in their daily work. This includes calculating wire sizes, impedence matching, the math of DC and AC circuits, and, of course, some basic trigonometry. If that is what you seek, this is the outline for you. It has enough exposition to function as a tutorial in its limited subject matter. It is a good companion to "Schaum's Outline of Basic Electricity, 2nd Edition", since it goes more into detail about the mathematics of the subjects covered in that outline.
for simple circuits.......2005-03-01
The maths is pretty simple. At least, you should think so, given that this book should be revision for you. It doesn't really go far into any involved maths. Just enough is covered to enable the description of basic circuit elements - resistor, capacitor and inductor. And to describe the AC impedance of a little circuit. A very minimalist approach.
The book feels like a high school level offering. One would hope that at the university level, more advanced discussions of circuits would occur.
