    Book Description

Deal with information and uncertainty properly and efficiently using tools emerging from generalized information theory

Uncertainty and Information: Foundations of Generalized Information Theory contains comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of results that have emerged from a research program begun by the author in the early 1990s under the name "generalized information theory" (GIT). This ongoing research program aims to develop a formal mathematical treatment of the interrelated concepts of uncertainty and information in all their varieties. In GIT, as in classical information theory, uncertainty (predictive, retrodictive, diagnostic, prescriptive, and the like) is viewed as a manifestation of information deficiency, while information is viewed as anything capable of reducing the uncertainty. A broad conceptual framework for GIT is obtained by expanding the formalized language of classical set theory to include more expressive formalized languages based on fuzzy sets of various types, and by expanding classical theory of additive measures to include more expressive non-additive measures of various types.

This landmark book examines each of several theories for dealing with particular types of uncertainty at the following four levels:
    * Mathematical formalization of the conceived type of uncertainty
    * Calculus for manipulating this particular type of uncertainty
    * Justifiable ways of measuring the amount of uncertainty in any situation formalizable in the theory
    * Methodological aspects of the theory

With extensive use of examples and illustrations to clarify complex material and demonstrate practical applications, generous historical and bibliographical notes, end-of-chapter exercises to test readers' newfound knowledge, glossaries, and an Instructor's Manual, this is an excellent graduate-level textbook, as well as an outstanding reference for researchers and practitioners who deal with the various problems involving uncertainty and information. An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.

    Download Description

The principle aim of this book is to provide readers with a comprehensive and in-depth overview of GIT research to create a unified framework of the technology'sdiverse uncertainty theories. Through the use of examples and exercises, the author discusses probability theory, fuzzy set theory, evidence theory and possibility theory.

      Book Description

Fact finding in judicial proceedings is a dynamic process. This collection of papers considers whether computational methods or other formal logical methods developed in disciplines such as artificial intelligence, decision theory, and probability theory can facilitate the study and management of dynamic evidentiary and inferential processes in litigation. The papers gathered here have several epicenters, including (i) the dynamics of judicial proof, (ii) the relationship between artificial intelligence or formal analysis and "common sense," (iii) the logic of factual inference, including (a) the relationship between causality and inference and (b) the relationship between language and factual inference, (iv) the logic of discovery, including the role of abduction and serendipity in the process of investigation and proof of factual matters, and (v) the relationship between decision and inference.

          Book Description

This book presents new approaches to the construction of fuzzy models for model-based control. New model structures and identification algorithms are described for the effective use of heterogeneous information in the form of numerical data, qualitative knowledge, and first principle models. The main methods and techniques are illustrated through several simulated examples and real-world applications from chemical and process engineering practice.

          Key features:

          * detailed review of algorithms and approaches developed for modeling and identification for control

          * numerous illustrations to facilitate the understanding of ideas and methods presented

*extensive references give a good overview of the current state of identification and control of dynamic systems and fuzzy modeling, and suggest further reading for additional research

          * supporting MATLAB and Simulink files, available at the website www.fmt.vein.hu/softcomp, create a computational platform for exploration and illustration of many concepts and algorithms presented in the book.

The book is aimed primarily at researchers, practitioners, and professionals in process control and identification, but it is also accessible to graduate students in electrical, chemical, and process engineering. Technical prerequisites include an undergraduate-level knowledge of control theory and linear algebra. Additional familiarity with fuzzy systems is helpful but not required.

            Book Description

The volume is the first one in the world literature which is a comprehensive, up to date account on computing with words, a new direction in broadly perceived intelligent systems, proposed and advocated by Professor Zadeh, the founder of fuzzy sets theory and fuzzy logic.
Computing with words may form a basis of a computational theory of perception inspired by a remarkable human ability to perform a wide variety of tasks on the basis of vague and imprecise information expressed in natural language.
In Part 1, foundations of computing with words related to linguistic aspects, fuzzy logic and approximate reasoning, granularity, calculations on verbal quantities, and general architectures for the implementation of computing with words are presented.

              Book Description

Hybrid systems are formed when continuous and discrete-time systems are interconnected. The author's goal in this book is to provide a detailed treatment of uncertainty analysis for sampled-data hybrid systems in the context of robust control theory. The book has a general scope in that it offers a widely applicable and unifying viewpoint that considers a large class of structured uncertainty problems arising in control, whether the system be hybrid, discrete-time or continuous-time.

In the body of the text, operator theoretic tools and techniques are developed to address the central design issues of performance and stabilization in the presence of structured uncertainty classes. The methods are applied to exact analysis of hybrid sampled-data systems in the H-infinity or Hilbert space setting, with the focus being u-theory and its generalizations to time-varying uncertainty structures. The mathematical machinery and framework presented provide a unified approach to studying performance and uncertainty, and is applicable to both standard and sampled-data systems.

The material of the book is of both theoretical and engineering interest: from a theory perspective the reader can expect to gain intuitive and powerful techniques for treating robust performance problems; practitioners may obtain methods that can be directly implemented in engineering applications.

                  Book Description

Harold Lewis applied a cross-disciplinary approach in his highly accessible discussion of fuzzy control concepts. With the aid of fifty-seven illustrations, he thoroughly presents a unique mathematical formalism to explain the workings of the fuzzy inference engine and a novel test plant used in the research. Additionally, the text posits a new viewpoint on why fuzzy control is more popular in some countries than in others. A direct and original view of Japanese thinking on fuzzy control methods, based on the author's personal knowledge of - and association with - Japanese fuzzy research, is also included.

                    Book Description

This book comprises a selection of papers from IFSA 2007 on new methods and theories that contribute to the foundations of fuzzy logic and soft computing. These papers were selected from over 400 submissions and constitute an important contribution to the theory and applications of fuzzy logic and soft computing methodologies. Soft Computing consists of several computing paradigms, including fuzzy logic, neural networks, genetic algorithms, and other techniques, which can be used to produce powerful intelligent systems for solving real-world problems. This book is intended to be a major reference for scientists and engineers interested in applying new computational and mathematical tools to achieve intelligent solution to complex problems. We consider that this book can also be used to get novel ideas for new lines of research, or to continue the lines of research proposed by the authors of the papers contained in the book.

The 80 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected form more than 400 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on relation between interval and fuzzy techniques, intuitionistic fuzzy sets and their applications, the application of fuzzy logic and soft computing in flexible querying, philosophical and human-scientific aspects of soft computing, search engine and information processing and retrieval, perception based data mining and decision making, joint model-based and data-based learning: the fuzzy logic approach, fuzzy possibilistic optimization, fuzzy trees, fuzzy logic theory, type-2 fuzzy logic, fuzzy logic applications, neural networks and control, as well as intelligent agents and knowledge ant colony.
