Customer Reviews:
Not a good textbook.......2007-03-11
I had this book required for a class, and although it certainly has a lot of information, it is a very poor textbook especially for an introduction. There is WAY too much information on some subjects and unnecessary detail. It reads more like a collection of peer reviewed articles than it does a textbook. The authors need to learn to HIGHLIGHT the important results and summarize information in a concise way. Even graphs are presented in very confusing manner (variable symbols not consistent in comparable graphs. Many authors also makes for different style changes...
Then again, I have little background in biology, and only moderate interest in the subject, so that might slant my opinion.
Great Text.......2007-02-09
This is a great text that sums up the body's response to biomaterials. It has good introductory sections to materials science issues, tissue engineering, and immunology.
Big book.......2006-12-12
It's hard to cover EVERYTHING related to biomaterials in one book, but the topics that are covered in this book are done so in detail. I don't really like how the book is pretty much a collection of works, but I understand how this allows each topic to be covered by an expert in that field. Overall, I find this book to be very useful in all of my classes.
Hard to read but book compiled with great care and detail.......2005-06-16
I must agree, it is probabily not the easiest book, you can pick up and read. It is voluminous, information is very dry, might be difficult to 'make notes' from this book. It may not be structured the way, you might normally find in most of the textbook. But having said that the information is compiled with great care and extraordinary detail. It contains the cutting edge information you can find out about biomaterials. For example, each section made up of 10-15 pages is purely written straight out of the latest journal articles.
It is definetely the best reference you can find for biomaterials, but if this is your main textbook, it might be a little hard for beginners with no background in material science to understand the concept right away. I was personally surprised to see that biomaterials is such an extensively branch in biomedical engineering and there is lot of scope. I think this book will help you realize that!!!
Biomedical Engineering Student.......2002-03-21
...I was not impressed with the content of this book because of mistakes made in the data it reported ie. that polymers can't form crystalline structures. I also found that the equations presented in the text did not have detailed information and at times the explaination of how to use the equations were slight.
I was also disappointed in the fact that I had to buy a xerox copy from the book store on campus (my financal aid would not pay for a book purchased anywhere else) because the publisher stopped print production before the class started which left myself and several other students "hanging" with only the option of purchasing a cheap copy for nearly the price of the original. Now I am left with an expensive book that I can't even you as reference material for future courses nor can I sell it because it is a copy and lastly because it is no longer in print.

Customer Reviews:
Good.......2007-09-03
This is a very comprehensive textbook, however, I will not recommend it to readers that only has an interest in the subject. Some of the content is highly mathematical, and as such meant for serious students in this field. The book covers a very wide range of subjects in this field.
Very comprehensive introduction to the field.......2006-05-31
This text is the best introductory book available, it is comprehensive and will serve the reader as a reference throughout his/her career. The authors have made a significant contribution to the field with this text and will help many biomedical engineering programs and their students.
Errors make it hard to learn.......2002-12-13
I've used this book now in 2 classes (including one taught by an author of one of the chapters) and have both times found the book hard to use. It is full of so many small errors you can never be sure whether the problems you are having are because you don't understand the material, or if there is another mistake in that section. Very frustrating. The problems are not limited to explicit errors either, there are issues with the presentation that makes me think it was poorly edited as well. Style, order, and omission of important points are among the sins. Some sections are pretty good, though.
The book is a good value for a textbook, however (it's huge!), and provides lots of useful information on a wide variety of BME-related topics. Just make sure you have someone to help you spot the mistakes.
review of biomedical engineering handbook.......2001-12-18
subjects are old and out of date. For example, modeling of the eye, (...). This books seems like an attempt to introduce you to the research of a few professors who are trying to recruit graduate students. I found little educational value in it.
Very good introductory book!.......2001-07-04
This text offers a lot of good information. This book provides an excellent overview to the field and is easy to read. I am a junior and an engineering student at Iowa State. This book has helped me understand how many different aspects there are within BME to specialize with in my degree and also elaborate on engineering fundamentals. I highly recommend it!

Update drastically overdue.......2007-08-25
While I consider this book one of the cornerstones of BMET education, a comprehensive update is very overdue. In addition to this edition, I also posess the first edition of the Brown and Carr book, and while that edition is considerably smaller, most of the information, figures, and photographs are reproduced in the fourth edition.
Granted, much of the information is still valid, but it does not truly represent the state of the field today. Their cause would be helped if they showed more accurate representations of what constitutes standard equipment of today. Additionally the authors spend a valuable amount of time explaining the theories behind measurement methods and electronic theories, the technology described is invariably that of the 1970s with little time or attention spent on what is in use now.
An aspiring Biomedical Equipment Technician should read this book, but should bear in mind that it will only go so far in preparing them for the modern day BMET field. I would love to see Brown and Carr throw out all of the figures and photographs for the fifth edition, just to make them actually re-visit the state-of-the-art.
Excellent book - But it could use a "cosmetic" update.......2000-02-16
Good subject coverage, knowledgeable author, and plenty of uncluttered figures makes this book very worthwhile. The only thing missing from this excellent book is an update. Although this is the third edition (1998), almost all of the equipment photographs are from the early-to-mid 1970's. An extensive and broad Suggested Reading section follows most chapters but again far far too many references are to early 1970's books and manuals. An update could earn this book a 5+ rating.

Customer Reviews:
great for anyone getting into bioengineering.......2006-05-24
I am a biochemistry student who is starting a Bioengineering PhD program in the fall and I have found this book to be a great intro into signals and systems. The example problems in MATLAB have been very helpful and clear. Despite the occasional typo (which is normal for a first edition), it is in general well-written.
Typos, typos, and typos.......2006-05-15
I remember doing a simple problem in chapter 1 and having to reference the appendix for a trig formula. But, the problem wouldn't work out nicely... so I looked online and realized that the trig formula had a typo in it (sine and cosine switched)!
That was only a sign of more things to come. You can't read two sentences without coming over a typo. There are grammar errors, mislabled graphs, and typos in equations. Some of the typos are very confusing too.
Here is a list of typos that my professor found in one chapter:
294 Eq. 8.10 Last term should be i(0)L
297 Table 8.1 Symbol for impedance of inductor and capacitor should be ZL(s) and ZC(s).
298 4th line: we see that as a → 0 (not t → ∞)
299Eq. 8.25 e-sτ instead of e-st
312First term of right side of first equation should be k1/s (not k1/2).
315 Example 8.5: "In the mechanical system of Example 8.4..." (not Figure 8.10).
321 Eq. 8.58 First limit should be t → ∞ (not s → ∞).
321 Third equation: integral sign missing in last term.
321 Example 8.8 "Use the final value theorem to find the final value of x(t)..."
321 lim t → ∞ missing from last equation in proof of Eq. 5.58
321 Example 8.8 0.5 should be 0.46 in last equation and the final value is 0.92.
321 Example 8.8 "...letting t → ∞ in the..." (not t → 0).
332 Problem 8 ke = 1000 dynes/cm (add units)
It's like that through the whole book. It's just terrible.

New Biology for Engineers and Computer Scientists
ASIN: 0198565151 |
Book Description
Bioengineering in this textbook is taken to be the application of the concepts and methods of the physical sciences and mathematics in an engineering approach to problems in the life sciences. The aims of such studies is to understand the physical processes and engineering aspects of a systems performance both under normal and abnormal conditions, and to design and use diagnostic or artificial devices meant to measure, improve, safeguard, or replace life functions. An experienced team of instructors in mechanical, electrical, chemical and nuclear engineering from the University of California at Berkeley developed the book including contributions on orthopaedics and biodynamics. The topics covered mirror the fundamental engineering science taught, usually at intermediate university level, and are each applied to problems in the biological world. The basic principles of engineering science are presented so that students will be able to grasp the essence of a particular topic quickly, whatever their background. Many worked examples and problems (together with selected solutions) are included throughout the text.
Customer Reviews:
A student who was required to work through the whole book.......2000-03-15
This textbook is disconnected and poorly organized. The authors of each chapter are so absorbed in their own work that they don't seem to remember that the text is supposed to be for a multidisciplinary audience. The problem sets are hit or miss, and in some cases the solutions are not supported by the text (if you relied on the text alone, you couldn't solve the problems). The biomechanics and biomaterials chapters are good, but the imaging, fluids and mass transfer chapters are lacking. If you want a good, broad bioengineering text, you should look for the Ratner book instead.

Book Description
Many universities now offer a course in biomedical optics, but lack a textbook specifically addressing the topic. Intended to fill this gap, An Introduction to Biomedical Optics is the first comprehensive, introductory text describing both diagnostic and therapeutic optical methods in medicine. It provides the fundamental background needed for graduate students in biomedical and electrical engineering, physics, biology, and medicine to learn about several biomedical optics issues. The textbook is divided into three main sections: general optics theory, therapeutic applications of light, and diagnostic optical methods. Each chapter has different levels of detail to build students' knowledge from one level to the next. The first section covers the history of optics theory and the basic science behind light-tissue interactions. It also introduces the relevant approaches and approximations used to describe light propagation in turbid biological media. In the second section, the authors look more closely at light-tissue interactions and their applications in different medical areas, such as wound healing and tissue welding. The final section examines the various diagnostic methods that are employed using optical techniques. Throughout the text, the authors employ numerical examples of clinical and research requirements. Fulfilling the need for a concise biomedical optics textbook, An Introduction to Biomedical Optics addresses the theory and applications of this growing field.
