Book Description
For more than 90 years, researchers around the world have relied on the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics for authoritative, up-to-date data. This year will be no exception. Many of the most heavily used tables in the book receive major updates and expansions, most notably: Physical Properties of Inorganic Compounds features nearly 25% more compounds; Bond Dissociation Energies includes 70% more compounds, including for the first time more than 1200 molecular ions; and Chemical Carcinogens was updated in accordance with the recent report from the National Toxicology Program. New references will also help keep readers up to date.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent reference for a chemistry research lab.......2006-12-11
This book deserves 5 stars as a comprehensive chemistry reasearch reference.
I gave it 4 stars since I mistakenly purchased it to use it to help with my children's homework. It is not designed for this purpose.
I still kept the book. I find it useful if I had to look up questions about chemistry.
It is very comprehensive and cost effective if purchased for the right purpose.

Customer Reviews:
Not a handbook for 'rule of thumb' engineering.......2006-12-16
This book is a resource for understanding/solving complex heat transfer. There are no pages wasted on useless information, just vital information pertinent to the topic. The book is well laid out and well referenced. The chapter on heat pipes is a bit lacking. Overall an excellent heat transfer reference.
Where's the useful stuff?.......2005-08-28
You could spend the rest of your life reading this book! It would be useful for any professor or A student or other intellectual studying the material in depth. But for a practicing engineer who has little available time to ponder the specifics, it would take a "lot" of effort to find material that could be put to work in this text. If you are interested in deriving the equations you need yourself, or if you're analysing a unique design, then this is the book for you. But if you are busy with standardized systems and technology, find another reference.
A Misleading Description.......2004-12-16
I was expecting more tables and equations especially for natural convection external flow. There is also very little useful information about forced convection external flow. I also would have liked to see some sample calculations to demonstrate how to use this book better.
There is plenty of theory despite the product's description and most of it is probably unnecessary for a handbook. It's more like a big, expensive text for heat transfer than a handbook. A person would have to be an engineer, mathematician, or physicist to deal with the level of mathematics presented in this book.
There is a fair amount of information about internal flow for both forced and natural convection, but this book's value is quite limited. I am dissappointed with this book and would not purchase it again if I lost it.
Reference book for engineers.......2004-04-02
This is not an introductory book on heat transfer! Instead it is a thorough treatment on heat transfer in a stringent an extensive manner. This book places greater emphasis on correctness than "easy-to-understand-ness". However, if you do read it, you gain a lot compared to most introductory heat transfer books. If you are interested in forced convection heat transfer, this book gives well documented equations and charts for a great number of shapes, though mostly internal flow. This is a very serious book for serious engineers!
A very useful reference.......2001-06-29
I found very useful the way thermal conductivity was approached. I was used to solve simple problems by means of "Temperature response charts". Now it is possible to use formulas instead of graphs.

Book Description
Provides a comprehensive coverage of the basic phenomena. It contains twenty-five chapters which cover different aspects of boiling and condensation. First the specific topic or phenomenon is described, followed by a brief survey of previous work, a phenomenological model based on current understanding, and finally a set of recommended design equations or correlations. Detailed references are listed at the end of each chapter for further reading.
Customer Reviews:
Flow regime based approach absent.......2004-03-10
The book is a good compilation, and probably the only up-to-date compiltion that includes authors from so many different research groups. The flow regime based approach was absent in the treatment of flow boiling and condensation. Excessive empiricism but not too much fundamental understanding of this topic.

Book Description
Researchers around the world depend upon having access to authoritative, up-to-date data. And for 90 years, they have relied on the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics for that data. This year is no exception. New tables, extensive updates, and added sections mean the Handbook has again set a new standard for reliability, utility, and thoroughness. New tables in this edition include: Index of Refraction of Inorganic Crystals, Upper and Lower Solution Temperatures of Binary Polymer Solutions, Miscibility of Organic Solvents, Density of Solvents as a Function of Temperature, and Coefficients of Friction. The Fundamental Physical Constants section has been updated with the latest CODATA/NIST values, and the Mathematical Tables appendix now features several new sections covering topics that include orthogonal polynomials Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, and statistics.
Customer Reviews:
Is it suitable for students?.......2005-11-12
I want to buy a reference book which is complete, compendious, and useful. Is this handbook suitable for students like us?
p.s. Please let me know if this one has tables that lists names and formulas of the most common chemical compounds, as well as the trivial names of them.
The Distilled Wisdom About Everything.......2004-12-02
I can't imagine a scientist or engineer of nearly any stripe without a copy of this book. I can't imagine a lab without at least one edition sitting around somewhere. The title says it's on chemistry and physics. And it is. But it's so much more. It's the consise summary of all of our technical knowledge. It represents the facts pulled out of nature by thousands of researchers since we humans began writing things down. And it's all in one place.
Yes, you could go to the web and find out nearly anything that's listed here, but it would take you decades. And when you're in the midst of doing something you want to reach up (this book is always on an upper shelf where you can see it) grab it and get the information you need right now.
Each edition, has expanded incrementally. You don't need to buy a new edition each year (unless you're in charge of the company library). But the changes add up, and every few years you need to upgrade.
With this edition, there's a freebie, a copy of the first edition. In the first edition you can read about all of the eighty one known elements. You can read about the electron (discovered only a few years before), but the proton and neutron hadn't been invented yet. And as for quarks. Well for quarks you need the new edition.
An incredible resource.......2004-10-14
If I were allowed only two reference books, they would be the OED and this.
This book doesn't have everything, it just seems that way. Listing the content would take pages, and much of it is chemical or physical arcana - if you need the data, you already know what to look for. At a more accessible level, it lists the frequencies of notes in several musical scales, information about common wire sizes, astronomical information, the chemical makeup of the human body, and ways to create carefully controlled humidity. That last one can be helpful to woodworkers; this book really does have something for almost everyone.
Although it comes out every few years, most people won't need to update very often. The definition of a volt, for example, changes rarely and only in small ways. This is a pricey book, but it holds its value pretty well.
This is the scientific reference book to have. If you know a student interested in any of the sciences, it's also a great book to give, and it's something that will be valued for years to come.

How to see How stuff works: basic reference.......2004-08-25
CRC Handbook Chemistry and Physics, 85th Edition, includes facsimile of the first 1913 edition by David R. Lide (CRC Press) This is the 85th Edition of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics and, coincidentally, the 15th edition produced by the current Editor-in-Chief. A facsimile of the First Edition of the Handbook, which appeared in 1913 and contained 116 pages, is being distributed with this volume. Comparison of the two provides a dramatic lesson on the rapid advance of science and technology in the ensuing nine decades. When the First Edition wits published only 81 elements were known, the electron had been discovered only 17 years before, and the proton and neutron were still unknown. Madame Curie had just won her second Nobel Prize, and Max Planck, Niels Bohr, and Albert Einstein had yet to be recognized with this honor. The size and scope of the Handbook have expanded in step with the growth of scientific knowledge. It has not only served as a reference source for professionals and students, but has provided inspiration to many young people as they developed their interest in science. The late Linus Pauling, in his Foreword to the 74th Edition, wrote "I attribute much of my knowledge about substances and their properties to my study of the information that the Handbook provided.
Throughout its history the overall philosophy of the Handbook has been to provide broad coverage of all types of data commonly encountered by physical scientists and engineers, with as much depth as can be accommodated in a one-volume format. While the Internet has spawned numerous large, comprehensive databases covering narrow areas of science, we feel there is still a need for a concise reference source spanning the full range of the physical sciences and focusing on key data that are frequently needed by R&D professionals, engineers, and students. We hope the CRC Handbook, in its print, CD-ROM, and Internet formats, can continue to serve these needs.
The 85th Edition includes updates and expansions of several tables, such as Aqueous Solubility of Organic Compounds, Thermal Conductivity of Liquids, and Table of the Isotopes. A new table on Azeotropic Data for Binary Mixtures has been added, as well as tables on Index of Refraction of Inorganic Crystals and Critical Solution Temperatures of Polymer Solutions. In response to user requests, several topics such as Coefficient of Friction and Miscibility of Organic Solvents have been restored to the Handbook. The latest recommended values of the Fundamental Physical Constants, released in December 2003, are included in this edition. Finally, the Appendix on Mathematical Tables has been revised by Dr. Daniel Zwillinger, editor of the CRC Standard Mathematical Tables and Formulae; it includes new information on factorials, Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, orthogonal polynomials, statistical formulas, and other topics.
Represents our Technological Civilisation.......2004-07-31
Some years ago, an author in a science fiction magazine put forth a gedanken (thought experiment). Suppose you would be transported to another planet and you had to attempt to rebuild our civilisation. But you could only take 6 books with you.
What would you take?
Well, that author gave a list of his suggestions. One of which was this; well an earlier edition anyway. He pointed out something about the Rubber Handbook, which is what anyone who regularly uses this book calls it. So easy to take for granted, because in any lab, you can usually rummage around and find some edition of it. But it represents millions of hours of engineering and research to measure and collate its results.
If there is one book that summarises the engineering of our civilisation, it is this.
Always nice to see CRC continually updating it. But having said the above, whether you need this latest edition is another matter. The changes are incremental. If you have an older edition, and there is no specific reason to upgrade, then you probably shouldn't. Note that I did not say never. Just tell yourself you can defer it till next year. Then, at that time, ask yourself again.

Customer Reviews:
Essential reference for anyone interested in solar PV.......2007-07-03
This Handbook is a collection of writings by many authors with expertise and experience in the field of solar photovoltaics. It brings the reader an excellent brief review of the history of PV, exposes the reader to just the right amount of theoretical foundation behind the workings of PV, and doles out to the reader fair amount of practical advice in the makings of PV products that eventually provide clean - and green - electricity to the humankind. It covers different types of photovoltaic products, from crystalline to amorphous based on the Group IV semiconducting elements and their various compound forms. In addition, this Handbook also offers insights into the economics of photovoltaics in an increasingly environment-aware society.
If there is a place where this Handbook could be improved, I think the editor could find more industrial practitioners of photovoltaic products to offer more hands-on advice about how to make a better - more efficient - solar cell.
Overall, this is an excellent handbook and could serve as a good reference to anyone who's interested in solar PV.
Helpful advanced technical overview.......2005-08-05
I used to sell solar electric PV systems as an ARCO Solar dealer back in the early 1980's. At the time no one could pronounce the name of the technology, and most thought is was angel dust. Solar powered calculators were just coming in, same with watches. Solar powered emergencyy freeway phones were 15 years away, unheard of at the time.
This technology is the most fascinating and yet due to cost, the most frustrating of all the renewable energy technologies. It is not widely used in mainstream electrical production, yet will fill vital niches in the renewable energy portfolio of any advanced economy.
The big energy companies have spent big bucks on research and have patents in all directions, yet the most widely sold solar cell modules use twenty year old technology.
Now that Germany has finally taken the plunge in supporting solar in a big way, other countries are taking a second look. California's governor tells the German chancellor that "we will do it even better." So the interest in the technology is growing.
This book is a bridge between the Popular Science or Scientific American articles and the chaotic science papers so much in vogue among academics trying to publish-not-perish. It is readable, for an educated individual who has some high school science.
Once you are over the rahrah and want to know "How does it actually work? or Could I get into manufacturing? this book will help. Trying to get answers to these questions is tough. No way will the marketing staff at BP Solar or Sharp or Shell tell you how they manufacture solar cells and assemble them into modules. So you wander in a sea of science papers, some in expensive collections like the IEEE proceedings or the obscure conference papers. Perhaps you stumble across the US DOE ENREL web site, or the patent information. But without the foundational knowlege, it is all hard to evaluate. So now comes the Wiley Handbook of Photovoltaic Science and Engineering. Take the time to use the "look inside" feature to see the table of contents. The writing style varies, each chapter is written by a different author. What unifies the presentation is that it is understandable. You will read some paragraphs three times but hey, this isn't Jules Verne. Yes it will take some effort, and you definitely need to know at least high school chemistry and physics, but when you really want to know something, you will find a way. So how to justify the cost? Well it comes out to 4 cents a page. And based on the used book prices, you can resell it later if you care to. The down side? Most of the research that is digested here is 2002 or earlier, but hey, some of the basic physics is over 100 years old, so there is quite a bit of catching up to do. I have not found another intermediate to advanced level book with the understandable detail this one offers. And something that gets you up to speed with state of the art 2002 does provide a good foundation for the field.
Now if I could only find a solar cell manufacturing cookbook... lets see-- 99 parts silicon, two parts boron one part phosphorous, heat the oven to 1150 degrees and stir ever so slowly.. pull the taffy out with a crystal and let it cool for eight hours, slice with diamond dust and sprinkle with silver and tin. Wrap in tedlar, place under glass. Serves millions, should not spoil even in full sun for 25 years...yup it is angel dust.

The Last Word in Flow Leak Detection!.......2006-08-24
A colleague who likes to call himself "Captain Suction" and I were debating the exigencies of a client's flow leak detection problem, and needless to say, things got quite hot. At least they did until I slammed O'Hanlon's volume on his cubicle and yelled, "Look it up, sucker!" I didn't hear a peep from him for weeks.
everyone in semiconductor industrie must read this book.......2005-09-03
Since I work in a very big semi' fab as field service engineer I looking for a good description of any tool part's on several manufacturing machines. But i work in Germany and it isn't so easy to find much more and better information as for an student without experience. It is my second book about vakuum technologie, all new kinds of engineering and also standard technologie is well prepaired in this issue. Some description of Pump's could be better or more funktionplan's , but all in one book is maybe too much. I was very surprised of this universal Handbook for engineer's and technician, best offer for all who need information about PVD, CVD, Implant vakuum etc. A lot of basic's in introduction part, well to understand, intresting gas properties, cluster technologie and last but not least - a big appendix with all what you need , very fine. Thank's for this good book.
congratulations.......1998-07-02
Thankful we found more complete data on vacuum system.
Execellent, practical and comprehensive reference book........1997-05-17
I borrowed this book from a colleague here at Applied Materials. After looking at it for a few minutes, I offered to buy it from him. Of course, he refused. So here I am at Amazon (physically at work) to purchase the book. It is extremely practical and I intend to keep it here at work as a reference for problems I encounter. By the way, my web address is http://www.netcom.com/~kvick/main.html. Please feel free to visit or email me
If you work with vacuum systems, DON'T LOAN THIS ONE!.......1997-05-09
John f. O'Hanlon is so thorough,
and has so much to offer. Whether the reader is
an engineer or an operator of a vacuum system
there is plenty here for each.
This is a reference book, so never lend it to anyone!

Book Description
This Fourth Edition brings the reader up to date on gas technologies and equipment that have evolved since the Third Edition was published in 1990. It is both a comprehensive overview and a source reference for supplementary data on every aspect of handling gases in compressed, liquefied, and cryogenic forms. Properties, safety considerations, equipment, and regulations relevant to compressed gases are all addressed. The Fourth Edition gives information relating to current standards from the various standards developing organizations in the field, as well as the latest shipping requirements, storage and handling procedures and uses. The Fourth Edition of Handbook of Compressed Gases is the only compressed gas reference that combines gas-specific information on 66 compressed gases, including physical constants, handling, storage and transportation, and safety requirements as well as comprehensive, detailed information on valves and pressure relief devices, cylinder maintenance, bulk containers and transportation, and oxygen cleaning. The handbook has been reformatted to present information in a more ordered, logical sequence, using specific labeling and marking information to make the Fourth Edition even more useful than its predecessor. This new edition includes: The latest changes in DOT regulations (HM-206, HM-215A, HM-215B), Exposure limits set by ACGIH and OSHA which have been reviewed and updated, New developments in safety equipment, along with the latest training requirements to mitigate a compressed gas incident. Since this handbook is not product-specific, it contains coverage of gases across the spectrum of the industry - not just those produced by one manufacturer. It is a ready source of useful information on natural gases, refrigerants, medical gases, atmospheric gases, and equipment and systems for oxygen service. All professionals whose work includes the manufacture, handling, or use of gas will find the Fourth Edition of Handbook of Compressed Gases extremely valuable. It serves the needs of engineers, technicians, researchers, maintenance personnel, health specialists, transportation directors, purchasing agents, hazardous materials officials, and chemical handlers.

Book Description
For more than 90 years, researchers around the world have relied on the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics for authoritative, up-to-date data. This year will be no exception. New tables, extensive updates, and added sections mean the Handbook again sets a new standard for reliability, utility, and thoroughness. New tables in this edition include: Proton Affinities, Electron Inelastic Mean Free Paths, Selected Properties of Semiconductor Solid Solutions, and Vapor Pressures (Solvent Activities) for Binary Polymer Solutions. Sections substantially revised and updated include NIST Atomic Transition Probability Tables, Summary Tables of Particle Properties, and Threshold Limits for Airborne Contaminants.
Customer Reviews:
New size is great........2005-10-18
The biggest thing about the new edition is it's bigger size.
It's probably my old eyes, but the small type on the small pages was getting awfully hard to read. It was becomming a chore to take the book, find the page you want and then squint, hold the page just so under the light so you can get the data you wanted. Maybe it's just the size, maybe it's the new typeface they talk about, I'm not sure. But, the general appearance of the new book is worth getting the new edition.
To be sure, there are a lot of new tables. I suspect that the data in the old tables has been checked, re-checked and corrected to another few decimal places, but as of yet anyway, I haven't needed any of the new tables. Being able to get the data you need more quickly is worth the cost of buying the new edition.
This is still the old standby. There's probably a copy in every lab around the world. And if there isn't, it's because someone from another lab came and borrowed it.

Book Description
This comprehensive handbook provides up-to-date knowledge and practical advice from established authorities in aerosol science. It covers the principles and practices of bioaerosol sampling, descriptions and comparisons of bioaerosol samplers, calibration methods, and assay techniques, with an emphasis on practicalities, such as which sampler to use and where it should be placed. The text also offers critiques concerning handling the samples to provide representative and meaningful assays for their viability, infectivity, and allergenicity. A wide range of microbes-viz., viruses, bacteria, fungi and pollens, and their fragments-are considered from such perspectives. Bioaerosols Handbook is divided into four parts, providing a wide-ranging reference work, as well as a practical guide on how best to sample and assay bioaerosols using current technology.
Customer Reviews:
The bioaerosols "bible".......2005-07-13
Considered by some to be THE overview reference book for bioaerosols, it covers their physical aspects, sampling, sample stability, instrument calibration, and multiple measurement approaches. It also describes problems specific to residential and industrial environments, including laboratories, hospitals, animal houses, and the particulars of pollen, fungi, molds, and bacteria.
I'm writing this review in 2005, and some of the material is a bit dated. The review of laser and optical measurement techniques gives some good background, but is no longer state of the art. Nevertheless, it is a very valuable reference for anyone studying bioaerosols for environmental or homeland security considerations.
The Bioaerosols Handbook.......2001-07-23
The handbook deals with the subject of bioaerosols on a broad but in depth basis. It deals with the practicalities of sampling, calibration and sample assay methods without being too theoretical. It's style is both technical but easy to read and understand, being written by experts from around the world. Each chapter has its own approach giving a refreshingly different perspective of each aspect of bioaerosol analysis. It's really a bioaerosol bible for anyone interested in biological aerosols and $... isn't bad for 600+ pages with a limited circulation. By the way it's brief specifically excluded viruses, so they don't get a lot of text devoted to them compared to bacteria, fungi etc.
It hasn't really dated that much either since 1995 (I am writing in 2006). Indeed even classic texts like 'The microbiology of the atmosphere' PH Gregory: Leonard Hill (1973) still pack in a lot of relevent data - I still love reading this book as well. By the way I wrote the chapter on Modern Microscopic Methods in the handbook - but I get no payment for sales or endorsement and I think the other twenty chapters are great. The pioneering UK image analysis manufacturers mentioned in this chapter are now long gone, so these days try the likes of MetaMorph, Leica QWin, Image pro Plus, Andora Technology and Openlabs image analysis software (they all work on the same basic principles anyway). Plus confocal microscopes, and other new types like TIRF, are now far more widespread in use.
Why not also try a library loan of :
1. Atmospheric Microbial Aerosols, B.Lighthart, A.J.Mohr, Chapman & Hall, 1994
2. The Aerobiological Pathway of Microorganisms, C.S.Cox, Wiley Press, 1987
3. Architectural Design and Indoor Microbial Pollution, R.B.Kundsin, Oxford University Press, 1988
