Book Description
Authored by an acknowledged expert on muscle and movement imbalances, this well-illustrated book presents a classification system of mechanical pain syndrome that is designed to direct the exercise prescription and the correction of faulty movement patterns. The diagnostic categories, associated muscle and movement imbalances, recommendations for treatment, examination, exercise principles, specific corrective exercises, and modification of functional activities for case management are described in detail. This book is designed to give practitioners an organized and structured method of analyzing the mechanical cause of movement impairment syndrome, the contributing factors, and a strategy for management.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for Health Care professionals .......2007-07-16
This is a good resource book for use by health care professionals. Sahrmann has good ideas towards movement impairments, but organization is a little hard to follow.
must have.......2007-01-12
THIs is a must have book for all physical therapist working in an orthopedic setting.
Most clinically useful book.......2003-03-07
Very useful for the practitioner involved in ortopaedic rehab, interested in going further than treating pain! Very essential complement to any good treatment. Will help you teach your patient how to take control of their body to prevent re-occurence.
Precision movement matters!.......2002-03-29
Having harrassed the author for close to four years I am pleased to say that this text represents what might best described an a "hinge in history". I agree that the concepts and examination items might be challenging for those used to a "cookbook" strategy but I am sure Shirley will agree that she did NOT invent anatomy or kinesiology! Systematic clinical examination, identifying movement deviations from mechanical precision and optimising efficient movement patterns are not large leaps of logic. Major car manufacturers and airlines have been doing this for years; analyse patterns of wear and tear on components and see what lasts the longest! However, humans in their comfortable/familiar patterns don't invest in the valid and rational practice of prevention and damage analysis. I know UK colleagues will take the path of least resistance when trying out the exam items within this book and say "Well it doesn't predict chronicity!" or "What about psychosocial factors?". To them and the pain biology fanatics I say this...when viruses, bacteria, trauma, genetics and family relationships have been analysed, what are the three primary drivers of nociception? Bogduk delineated the mechanical deformation model of nociception; Sahrmann has now thrown down the gauntlet with the movement paradigm to support or negate. Roll up your sleeves, break a sweat and join those of us liberated from surreal Southern Hemisphere skeleton pushing. Active rehabilitation with empiricism, determinism and a healthy cynicism! This text gives content and not just theory/process models - try telling a student that clinical reasoning is a valid model when they don't know what to look for!
Long awaited text for expert practice.......2001-09-26
Physical therapists like myself have been waiting for a text from the author for over 10 years. Definitely a text for someone well versed in the anatomy and mechaincs of the musculoskeletal system. This text is written in clear categories and deals with problems in three general areas. It takes effort and analytic thinking to understand the myriad of motions listed in the text. A CD with actual demonstrations would help immensely in seeing all the factors the author is illustrating. The introduction covers very complex ideas made as simple as possible by the author. I would recommend this text for any movement specialist but I would caveat my recommendation with the warning that hard work is needed to really grasp the techniques listed in this text. This author is saying things that need to be learned by movement specialists and only can be applied by an expert.

Great introduction to Applied Kinesiology.......2003-04-12
Robert Frost's AK manual is lean and to the point. It gives the history of AK, how AK is used in Europe and the USA, theory into the mechanisms of the reflexes used in AK, basic therapeutic procedures with explainations, and clear diagrams of the basic muscle tests and the appropriate reflexes. A perfect complement to the 100 hour course. I recommend this book to any student or practioner in health care who is looking to expand their skill set.

INTRODUCTION TO THE THERMODYNAMICS OF MATERIALS, FOURTH EDITION
ASIN: 0471246891 |
Book Description
A classroom-tested textbook providing a fundamental understanding of basic kinetic processes in materials
This textbook, reflecting the hands-on teaching experience of its three authors, evolved from Massachusetts Institute of Technology's first-year graduate curriculum in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. It discusses key topics collectively representing the basic kinetic processes that cause changes in the size, shape, composition, and atomistic structure of materials. Readers gain a deeper understanding of these kinetic processes and of the properties and applications of materials.
Topics are introduced in a logical order, enabling students to develop a solid foundation before advancing to more sophisticated topics. Kinetics of Materials begins with diffusion, offering a description of the elementary manner in which atoms and molecules move around in solids and liquids. Next, the more complex motion of dislocations and interfaces is addressed. Finally, still more complex kinetic phenomena, such as morphological evolution and phase transformations, are treated.
Throughout the textbook, readers are instilled with an appreciation of the subject's analytic foundations and, in many cases, the approximations commonly used in the field. The authors offer many extensive derivations of important results to help illuminate their origins. While the principal focus is on kinetic phenomena in crystalline materials, select phenomena in noncrystalline materials are also discussed. In many cases, the principles involved apply to all materials.
Exercises with accompanying solutions are provided throughout Kinetics of Materials, enabling readers to put their newfound knowledge into practice. In addition, bibliographies are offered with each chapter, helping readers to investigate specialized topics in greater detail. Several appendices presenting important background material are also included.
With its unique range of topics, progressive structure, and extensive exercises, this classroom-tested textbook provides an enriching learning experience for first-year graduate students.

Customer Reviews:
Good Book for Advanced Reaction Theory.......2002-07-12
This book does a good job of explaining the basis for reaction mechanisms and how catalysts work. The technical level of this book requires students to have at least a couple of advanced chemistry classes, such as physical chemistry, in their background. In summary, buy this book if you are looking to expand your understanding of chemical reactions and have a solid understanding of the basic chemistry principles.
Great content, but hampered by mistakes.......2002-03-13
Good book for undergrad and grad students who've already had reactor design and p.chem. Much of the theory, in latter half of the book, takes basis from statistical thermo, so p.chem may be useful. As a student w/o such bkgds, overall I find the book to be very clear in explanation. Delivery of material is deliberate and well thought out. Appreciate the use of many example problems. Unfortunately, no solutions for the Problems at end of chapter.
Unfortunately, the book has a ton of mistakes, some simply typos, but some are very critical mistakes in example problems, some of which are very subtle.
Overall, content is excellent for a one seeking some applicable information (1st half), and those seeking more theoretical treatment (2nd half).

Book Description
Focusing on the wealth of information emerging in the area of energy medicine, this unique resource explores mechanisms by which mind and body processes influence the body's healing and performance potential. Content draws on an extraordinary range of sources to explore theories of human energy from physiology and biophysics, to examples drawn from the realms of "spontaneous healing," cutting-edge athletic and artistic performance, the martial arts, and various contemplative and spiritual practices. Providing new insights and theoretical models, it offers ways to apply these concepts directly, practically, and clinically.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, enlightening.......2007-04-02
So much fascinating information about the human bio electrical system, and how even the tiniest current of electricity can effect it. I couldn't stop reading it. Every chapter opened my eyes wider to the possibilities for creating health even with the amount of current contained in the impulse of a faint thought or intention.
I wish the print were a bit larger and the pages not so shiny, because it made it harder to read. Otherwise a very great book!
A little disappointing.......2005-10-19
Anyone reading the title of this book might justifiably assume it was going to deal with the type of energy manifested in Qi Gong, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), acupuncture, Quantum-Touch and many other energy therapies - subtle energy it is often called.
The author does not want to deal with this type of energy, and admits as much, though he is careful to say he does not deny its existence. His book is devoted mainly to electromagnetic phenomena, of which there are plenty, of course, but this is not the healing energy as I understand and use it.
I have to give it four stars as it is very thorough in its limited scope; otherwise I would only have given it three precisely because it does not deal with what I see as the primary healing energy, but only with what I regard as secondary phenomena.
It's an expensive book and I am sorry I bought it, it may be useful to some, but not to me.
A Mind-Boggling New Scientific Understanding.......2004-03-02
James Oschman has done it, he's presenting us with the rare gift of a breakthrough understanding of the human condition that includes a profound new theory of the mechanisms of life, one with critically important clinical implications. In prose that reads like a good adventure story he presents with great clarity, comprehensiveness, and extensive endnotes a mind-boggling story from the frontiers of biophysics. Reading merely the introduction to this immensely important book will open your mind to a radically different paradigm of human functioning, one that is laying the foundation for more fully understanding all kinds of phenomena of living processes that heretofore have remained insoluble mysteries.
He discusses the nature of scientific revolution and how once shunned and ignored ideas move into the mainstream of orthodoxy only to be replaced in turn. It is time for some of the most fundamental assumptions of medical and life sciences to be examined, time for these new ideas to be tested.
Dr. Oschman cites voluminous evidence from scientific journals demonstrating that along with the communication systems we are most familiar with, the nervous and endocrine systems, there are other communication and regulatory systems that can only be understood when we look deeper into ourselves than the realms of organs and cells and even molecules with all of their complex iterations and interactions. We must go into the quantum realm of subatomic particles if we would understand the nature of life.
Biophysicists have been doing this in their labs and specialized journals but their discoveries have had little effect outside their field. What Jim has so ably accomplished that no one else has done and which is so vitally important is to carefully scrutinize this burgeoning material with the eyes of a comprehensivist and synthesize it into a new paradigm that sheds light on so many mysteries from the everyday questions of how living organisms regulate disparate functions, generate energy, et cetera. In doing so a number of fascinating questions arise in the mind of the scientifically literate that scream for investigation. So many questions that have resisted our best minds' efforts at understanding appear now ready to be answered, and give rise to the next layer of questions.
Life functions cannot be understood so long as the investigation holds to the familiar realms. We now have the tools and with Jim's contribution the theoretical framework to carry our investigation of life and especially human life into the next domain of quantum realities. The practical results, if this work is given the resources it needs, will surely be immensely important. Questions about the extraordinary and well-documented events that sometimes occur in activities like sports, the martial arts, and various healing modalities can now be investigated rationally - and perhaps someday if we do the work these now rare and inexplicable phenomena will be harnessed and reliably produced for the well-being of us all.
The evidence for this "second" nervous system, one that functions much more rapidly, is near infinitely more complex, and magnitudes of order more sensitive than the nervous system we are so familiar with is conclusive. And this system has been right in front of our eyes and under our hands all along, we just didn't have scientific tools with sufficient sensitivity to perceive and investigate it until recently. I urge everyone interested in these vital issues to get this book and spread the word.

Good Theoritical Book.......2007-05-07
This book is focusing on Motor theories. Wealth and rich of new Neurorehabilitation concepts, however, this book is not helpful for those who are looking for Neurorehabilitation Techniques in clinical context. This book is not good for someone e.i Physiacl Therapist who is looking for clinical details about the Neurological techniques.

Book Description
Get the latest information on evidence-based prevention and rehabilitation approaches from an internationally recognized expert; and learn how to apply the principles to low back disorders and low back pain in industry, sport, and everyday settings.
Low Back Disorders: Evidence-Based Prevention and Rehabilitation provides professionals with the foundation to make the best clinical decisions for building the best prevention and rehabilitation programs. The author's unique research results quantify forces that specific movements and exercises impose on the low back. The text identifies commonly prescribed practices that are, in fact, contraindicated in promoting back health. Additionally, it provides appropriate strategies to offset injuries and restore function. Low Back Disorders will build your understanding of the science behind appropriate practices so that you can use them effectively with clients and patients.
The book presents a clear exposition of back anatomy and biomechanics. It also provides the evidence to dispel myths regarding spine stabilization exercise and various prevention approaches. For example, the quantification of stability will show which muscles are important and which exercises groove motor patterns to ensure spine stability.
With Low Back Disorders, you will gain valuable information on measured loading of the back during specific activities and apply it to avoid commonbut counterproductivepractices in back rehab, learn how to analyze patients' and clients' unique physical characteristics and lifestyle factors and tailor treatments and preventive measures to their individual needs, and learn how to help patients and clients achieve the low back stability required to prevent future damage and back pain. You'll also acquire the information necessary to prescribe effective exercises clearly and easily.
The text offers practical guidelines for developing optimal exercise regimens and over 40 tests and exercises for diagnosis and prevention of low back pain, carefully selected or developed based on measured biomechanical factors.
Low Back Disorders addresses in detail the ergonomic issues related to manual materials handling and injuries and low back pain associated with seated work and sport, and throughout the book it reinforces their application in functional activities.

Patient with bulging disc.......2007-01-03
This book is fantastic. I wish I could thank Dr. McGill personally for this well-researched, well-founded book on rehabilitating the lower back. This book should be required reading for low back pain patients and their care givers. After reading the book, I was able to relieve a tremendous amount of back pain through very careful application of the ideas. It also helped me understand why my symptoms seemed to be aggravated by physical therapy. If you suffer from lower back pain, this is a great way to take better control of your therapy. The "evidence-based" nature of the book makes it invaluable.
A 'must read' for everyone who deals with backs.......2006-01-28
Everyone who deals with backs, either in sports (athletes, coaches, trainers), physicians, therapists, and back pain patients themselves, should read this book. I am a physician who specializes in back disorders and back pain. I have followed Dr. McGill's reseach for many years and it has revolutionized my practice like nothing else. One of my top priorities with back pain patients is to review what exercises they have been given in the past. I invariably stop them from doing several excercises that Dr. McGill's research has proven to be quite harmful for the back. I Substitute the 'big three' excercises that are described in this book, and many of the patients need no further intervention. There is a great deal of misinformation regarding back excercise, and many of the excercise routines used in sports, schools, military, and fitness centers are harmful. That is why this book is so important; not because it gives another fitness guru's opinion, but because it gives good, scientifically based facts on one of the tougher clinical issues from a world renown expert. Thank you Dr. McGill - keep the research coming!
Also check out Dr. McGill's other book "Ultimate back fitness and performance" for a less technically dense description of many of the same issues.
A Good Source of Infromation.......2005-09-08
I refer to this book many times over over the years and has helped clear up that tricky patient that is not getting better as fast as they and you the doctor would like. Great source of information for any doctor regardless of how many years in practice. Also highly recommend a book I found to be execellent source for rehabing my patients is called The Backsmart Fitness Plan by Dr.Adam Weiss. A DC who has written a very good and detail source of exercises that patients suffering from back or neck pain can do and make progress. These books add many useful tips to my practice.
For Every Doctor.......2005-07-02
This book is full of information that every doctor who sees patients should have in their office. A must have , detail of structure issues and resvoling layout and protocol.Highly recommended. Also recommend The Backsmart Fitness Plan By Dr. Adam Weiss, a book written for pateint care in laymen's term for a complete full body workout.
Dr. Mcgill - Miracle Cure.......2005-06-29
I have had chronic lower back pain for over 25 years. I have been to back specialists, the Back Institute, Acupunturists, Massage Therapists, and many Chiropractors. In addition, I read many books on my problem. I have a classic case of acute lower back pain - degenerative discs and some arthritis. I followed the Back Institute's regimen of exercises for 20 years and my family doctors for 5 years. I now realize I was given the wrong exercises and aggrivated the situation.
Two acquiantences recommended Dr. Mcgill's exersises in his book "Lower Back Disorders". I started doing the "Curl Ups", the "Side Bridge" and the "Birddog" exercises. For over one and a half years I have been virtually pain free. I can't believe it. In the past, every year the pain would become so severe I would miss work and be flat on my back.
This past year I have been doing extensive renovations around my home and cottage. I have been lifting 70lb. bundles of shingles up ladders, digging trenches, and moving yards of top soil. My back seems very flexible. Generally I feel great. Some days after the extreme physical activity I feel discomfort. This is caused by sore muscles and arthritis in my pelvic region. I have not had any immobility like in the past.
Finding Dr Mcgill's book was a miracle for me. I feel like I was "cured". I have highly recommended it to many of my friends.
