5 out of 5 stars desperate need of 2nd edition.......2007-06-20

This is a great introductory text into solid state physics. Do not expect mathematic rigor but do expect to obtain qualitative understanding. I bought this book while taking Condensed Matter where the main text was Ashcroft and Mermin. The class was taught horrifically and I was not ready for the level of A&M. I bought this book and it was a fine accompaniment.

That being said, there are problems. There are numerous errors (maybe they are corrected in the revised version). Omar uses n and N interchangeably for electron concentration which bothered me greatly. Also the problems are not that great. You don't learn a lot from doing them. A second edition would hopefully correct these issues.

4 out of 5 stars A very good textbook.......2003-10-25

The book is, indeed, much better organized, and much more intelligible and pleasant to use than the unfortunate Kittel "standard." With some tweaking, it's a good undergraduate course textbook and deserves to be wider known. Despite its age (basically, from the mid-1970's), it discusses a number of applications which are of current interest: semiconductor devices and optics, liquid crystals and polymers, some biomolecules. There are very few good solid-state texts, and this one's in the top row.

5 out of 5 stars Far superior to Kittel's book despite age.......1999-04-06

This is a corrected printing of the 1975 text which was plagued with mistakes. Omar does a good job introducing topics with easy to understand examples and good qualitative explanations. The very first chapter gets the reader off to a good start with a thorough, but understandable, teatment of crystallography (other authors always manage to botch this). Omar's problem sets are lengthier, more varied, and above all, more doable than those in Kittel's text. The problem sets are preceded by a set of qualitative questions, which are good practice for the occasional conceptual problem that the instructor may include on an exam. The text has two minor drawbacks which are forgiveable in light of the dearth of good intorductory texts on the subject. First, the author did not update the text at all, (did he pass away?) but simply corrected many old mistakes. It was undoubtedly an up to date text circa 1975 but his treatment of more specialized topics (i.e. superconductivity) is badly out of date. Of course the basics, such as x-ray diffraction and band theory, have not changed so it is a perfectly good book for a one semester or one quarter course. The second drawback is that the bibliography, which cites textbooks that the author thought useful in the mid-'70's, was not updated either. The first five chapters in this text correspond to the first seven in Kittel. If you are unlucky enough to have been assigned Kittel, reading Omar will clarify many matters and provide you with an abundance of solveable practice problems.

Book Description

Professor Ziman’s classic textbook on the theory of solids was first pulished in 1964. This paperback edition is a reprint of the second edition, which was substantially revised and enlarged in 1972. The value and popularity of this textbook is well attested by reviewers’ opinions and by the existence of several foreign language editions, including German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Polish and Russian. The book gives a clear exposition of the elements of the physics of perfect crystalline solids. In discussing the principles, the author aims to give students an appreciation of the conditions which are necessary for the appearance of the various phenomena. A self-contained mathematical account is given of the simplest model that will demonstrate each principle. A grounding in quantum mechanics and knowledge of elementary facts about solids is assumed. This is therefore a textbook for advanced undergraduates and is also appropriate for graduate courses.

5 out of 5 stars Wow a pleasure to read.......2005-03-11

There are few physics books that I can say I enjoy reading for fun (and I'm a student of physics) but I must admit that this book is excellent. It holds true not only to its reputation but to what the author's original intent was. It is thorough, enlightening, to the point and fun to read, the author's sense of humor not only aids in ease or reading but makes retention and elucidation all the more easy! This is an excellent graduate text on basic solid sate physics, even though it was published in 1975.

It covers all the bascis areas, from periodicty to lattice waves, phonons, semiconductors etc at an accessible level to the beginning graduate student. A must read.

5 out of 5 stars A joy to read.......2003-01-19

This book deserves to be much more widely used. Ziman's prose is simply wonderful, where Kittel is unreadable, and Ashcroft & Mermin often dense. It's a bit quirky (how on earth did he find the epigrams for each chapter?) but that is what makes it lovable. Anyone who doubts his scientific soundness should check out his massive "Electrons & Phonons."

The main advantage of this book is that it emphasizes conceptual understanding over mathematical manipulation. That's also its weakness: Ziman often glosses over or just sketches what in other texts would be occasions for massive algebra. Perhaps if you are a true theorist type, you can fill in the blanks on your own. As an experimentalist, I feel like I need some other intro texts to make me feel like I can do *some* math in the field. On the other hand, I don't know of any textbook that makes me feel I could do the truly heavy lifting.

5 out of 5 stars No doubt as good as the first edition.......2002-03-17

I used heavily the first edition of this book, and have not seen the second, but it is no doubt as good as the first, which was packed full of insights into the many rich phenomena that exists in solids. It has served, and will serve, future generations of students in the 21st century in their development of new ideas and technologies based on condensed matter physics.

Writers of physics texts should follow the strategy that this author does, in his statement that "a treatise expounds; a textbook explains". The emphasis of any book in physics should be in developing the reader's intuition; the mathematics sometimes takes hold and moves the reader away from the essential ideas. The author is one of the few who has not done this, and that is no doubt the reason for this book's popularity.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent classic.......2001-08-03

The book is surely an advanced treatment of solid state physics and as such, the uninitiated reader may not necessarily appreciate the beauty of the treatment at first. Indubitably, however, Ziman presents a coherent and clear exposition in which the principles of the solid state are explained in a unified manner --a merit many books are missing. It is a joy to read if you have the basics covered in an earlier course and/or self-study. Ziman's Shakespearian flair is virtually impossible to not realize and in turn, further enhances the quality of the exposition. For those who would like to kick their theoretical background up a notch, this book is the right answer.

5 out of 5 stars Very good; not really intro level, though........2000-08-04

For students who have Kittel or Ashcroft/Mermin under their belt, this book provides a somewhat more mathematical presentation of fundamental concepts in solid state theory, as is clear from the contents shown on this site. I might add, that Ziman is a highly respected physicist, well known for his work on superconductivity. This was the first book I got into my hands that said something like "as the group of lattice translations is abelian, Bloch functions that are translated change only by a phase factor", which made me hungry for more.

4 out of 5 stars Very strong monograph.......2004-03-07

Given the time at which it was written, this book is still unsurpassed in its quality, conciseness, and clarity of style in the field of NMR. It was written by a physicist, contrary to Ernst's book, which is also excellent but focuses more on the interpretation of spectra rather than spin physics. (This was of course Ernst's intent anyways, there already was an excellent textbook on NMR by Abragam; he saw no need to reinvent the wheel.) While Abragam's book is quite a joy to read, it is also rather outdated. Nearly half the topics dealt with are no longer in use today. It needs to be supplemented by Ernst's book, as well as Callaghan's book. I also recommend Abragam & Goldman's book "Order and disorder" for a treatment of more modern NMR physics, if like me, you like eclectic topics. Abragam uses a purely quantum approach, and does not treat feynman path integral approach to relaxation. The chapter on relaxation is excellent, and has been praised by many, but he does not really explain much of the theory of random processes, so you'll need to learn this stuff elsewhere if you've never been exposed to stochastic processes before (well, Abragam makes very simple markov approximations, which is easy to understand as is- without too much extra background). Definitely the chapter on dipolar line width is worth mentioning.

5 out of 5 stars The classic on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.......1998-05-06

Referenced in countless professional journal articles, this 1961 classic is one of the seminal treatises on the subject of Nuclear Magnetism. Topics addressed are: motion of free spins, basic resonant and non-resonant methods, macroscopic aspects of nuclear magnetism (Bloch equations, transient methods, detection methods), Dipolar line width in a rigid lattice, spin temperature, electron-nuclear interactions, quadrupole effects (fine structure), thermal relaxation, line width theory, multiplet structure in liquids, and effects of strong RF fields.

All of these topics are covered in consise, easy-to-understand language, and the treatment of the material is classic and elegant. A necessary part of any complete solid-state or NMR library.

Book Description

This invaluable book provides a pointed introduction to the fascinating subject of bottom-up nanotechnology with emphasis on the molecular-based study of condensed matter in small systems. Nanotechnology has its roots in the landmark lecture delivered by the famous Nobel Laureate physicist, Richard Feynman, on 29 December 1959 entitled "There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom." By the mid-1980s, it had gained real momentum with the invention of scanning probe microscopes. Today, nanotechnology promises to have a revolutionary impact on the way things are designed and manufactured in the future.

Principles of Nanotechnology is self-contained and unified in presentation. It may be used as a textbook by graduate students and even ambitious undergraduates in engineering, and the biological and physical sciences who already have some familiarity with quantum and statistical mechanics. It is also suitable for experts in related fields who require an overview of the fundamental topics in nanotechnology. The explanations in the book are detailed enough to capture the interest of the curious reader, and complete enough to provide the necessary background material needed to go further into the subject and explore the research literature. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of nanotechnology, a comprehensive glossary is included detailing abbreviations, chemical formulae, concepts, definitions, equations and theories.

    Book Description

Effective medium theory arises in condensed matter physics when a field in a material medium is to be considered. The subject has been developed considerably and while the results are useful for predicting materials performance, the theory can also be used in a wide range of problems in physics and engineering. This book develops the topic of effective medium theory by bringing together the essentials of both the static and the dynamical theory. Electromagnetic systems are thoroughly dealt with, as well as related areas such as the CPA theory of alloys, liquids, the density functional theory and others, and the unifying aspects of the effective medium concept are emphasized. The final chapter contains a wide range of useful applications in condensed matter physics and material science.

    Book Description

Thin film deposition is a broad and burgeoning field, with applications ranging from razor blade coatings to quantum-well lasers. However, much of the available thin film literature is based on empirical knowledge, and focuses only on specific processes or applications. This volume rectifies that situation, offering a complete description od the theory and technology of thin film deposition. The book's broad perspective gives readers the tools to objectively evaluate and choose the appropriate thin film process for a specific application. This indispensable volume also includes a complete list of symbols and an extensive index.

5 out of 5 stars A fine modern book on a good old topic at last !!!.......2005-08-20

To the curious minds of today and tomorrow:

I've recently gotten this book as a present and read a few chapters of it to date. As I am well versed in diffusion, I presume it's ok for me to comment on the book without having fully read it.

After reading a few chapters, and perusing over the entire volume, I was most impressed with Dr. Glickman's text. He's to be commended for having done a very fine job.

Diffusion is inherently a very mathematical subject. Yet, without a proper presentation of the important aspects of the physical phenomena it is barrren and simply reduced to solving partial differential equations. Glickman's book, seems to succeed at providing the physical picture of diffusion with utmost clarity, while maintaining mathematical rigor. Furthermore, it is up to date and exposes the reader to recent developments in the study of diffusion phenomena. The treatment is primarily on the phenomenology of diffusion. If you fancy to learn more about diffusion kinetics, I recommend the book by Khachaturyan (Theory of Structural Phase Transformations in Solids).

As someone who learned diffusion from Physical Metallurgy books, Shewmon's and Carslaw's books, I find Glickman's very refreshing for it's modern, rigorous and comprehensive.

    I highly recommend it.

    Cheers,

    Dr. E.

This is a complete text on the subject of diffusion. Similar to Shewmon's original "Diffusion in Solids", but Glicksman is more complete and modern. Glicksman is worth purchasing even if you already own Shewmon.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally, a complete explanation..........2000-04-06

I have found that mathematically intensive books frequently leave out many of the steps that are critical to a complete understanding of the fundamental equations. Diffusion in Solids does a wonderful job of taking you from start to finish in each problem presented. It is a complete tome worth every dollar spent. Thanks Marty!

i dont have it in front of me for a more detailed review, but the text is popular with german students and only after it became more widespread was it translated into english and redistributed. it's a fine introductory text (and better than kittel in my opinion, which reads more like a recipe-book).

1 out of 5 stars Seems very incomplete.......2001-03-19

We used this text in an introductory solid state course. Overall, it seems that the text is far too brief and doesn't thoroughly explain the material enough for an introductory course. There are very few examples/applications. The problems in the chapter require research outside of what is in the text. It leaves out a lot of important details. I would really suggest looking elsewhere for a good solid state introduction.

    2 out of 5 stars Limited audience.......2000-02-23

I used this book in a course which was supposed to be an introduction to solid state. Know some basic ideas in crystal structure, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, advanced and partial differential equations and Fourier anlysis and then you'll begin to be ready to understand this text. Kittel's Solid State text is slightly more helpful (but only slightly). The book is completely devoid of examples, yet there are sections at the end of each chapter involving current applications and experiments in condensed matter physics and materials science. Exercises require a leap of understanding from the contents of the chapter before them. Some experience with a computer language may also be necessary. I wouldn't recommend this book for most undergrads.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook on superconducting electronics.......2000-08-08

This book starts from the basic physics of superconductivity and deals with superconducting devices, such as SQUIDs, SIS mixers and Single Flux Quantum devices. The treatments of each device are based on the current research, so that readers easily get the front of the fields. It also includes a prenty of important papers as the references and thus you can easily get into the deep level. I found one disadvantage that there is no statements on single electron/Cooper pair tunneling phenomena. I recommend this book for the persons to study superconducting electronics from students to the experts in this field. This book is valuable even for the persons who read the first editon because each treatments are updated.

      Book Description

Based on the author's graduate course taught over many years in several physics departments, this book takes a 'reductionist' view of statistical mechanics, while describing the main ideas and methods underlying its applications. It implicitly assumes that the physics of complex systems as observed is connected to fundamental physical laws represented at the molecular level by Newtonian mechanics or quantum mechanics. Organised into three parts, the first section describes the fundamental principles of equilibrium statistical mechanics. The next section describes applications to phases of increasing density and order: gases, liquids and solids; it also treats phase transitions. The final section deals with dynamics, including a careful account of hydrodynamic theories and linear response theory. This textbook is suitable for a one year graduate course in statistical mechanics for physicists, chemists and chemical engineers. Problems are included following each chapter, with solutions to selected problems provided.
