This is the textbook for my sophomore electromagnetics in the electrical engineering. I have to admit I really hated this class then. One is that there are equations here and there and it usually clouds the issue. Another reason is that the author uses the deduction method to describe this topic. It is quite different from the traditional way which goes following the historical developments.

For some reasons, I need to refresh electromagnetics in later years. I re-studied this book and then found it written pretty well this time. It is well-organized and systematic. One weak spot is the explanation for physics. I think it should be made better so that it is easier for readers to absorb the knowledge instead of confused by those mathematical equations.

This book is rather classic, which means it stays at the balance of electromagnetic statics and dynamics. Many recent electromagnetic textbooks are more focused on electromagnetic waves at the expense of the electromagnetic statics. I don't think this is a wise decision since electromagnetic statics is still very important in the real world applications, for example RF IC design.

This book is published almost 20 years ago. But don't regard it as out of date. Based on my acamedic and industrial experience, it is still the best engineering electromagnetic textbook for undergraduates.

You will finally understand what light is - 10 years after you take the course.

Yes, 2 years after you take the course, you get to arrange waves that can go easily back and forth from wave equations(insane vector calculus) to circuit equations(simple V=IR).

Yes, combined with clever Fourier math, you get to calculate impedance as vector reflection waves, so that you see (through Smith-Chart night vision like mental glasses) the waves invisible to human eyes (but visible to some animals) and make them oscillate/up-down-mix as an EE engineer making a living.

But James Maxwell's math is the only thing interesting in the world, which the book says that well. God made the waves and nothing more. If you want to make stories out of the context or take words out of the context (many books try and do), you give yourself trouble. Yes, we give ourselves troubles all our life. And you will see that in this book. This is life.

Everyone in this world needs to understand how a wave of light is made.

This book was horrid. I was bombing the class all year with this text, until I bought REA's electromagnetics problem solver. Going into the final, I had maybe a B. By studying the REA book and working my [...] off before the final, I got that up to a final mark of A-. The physics students at my school used Griffith's electrmagnetics book, and they seemed to enjoy that book a lot more.

This book was slightly better when I took a waveguides course... imagine my disgust when I found out we were using this book, again! Even the waveguides sections were still quite weak, though, but they do keep me from rating this book a 1.

While I took Electromagnetic Fields I & II courses using the first and last half of this text, I also purchased other solutions manuals and texts to survive. This was, to me, by far the most clearly written and well-presented text.
16 years after having taken the course, I'm doing a cover-to-cover review of this book and given my industry experience I appreciate the excellence of this book even more. The downside to using it is that I've found a real difficulty in locating the Solutions Manual, leaving me to use others where there's always changes in variables, ordering, and approaches which build in inefficiencies/overhead.

Landau's approach to Classical Field Theory demonstrates his ability to be clear, concise, and elegant without drowning out the physics with math. I will say, however, that Landau requires a certain maturity to appreciate his style (same goes for Rudin's books of analysis). I would recommend this title to those with a working knowledge of classical E & M, vector/tensor analysis, and of special relativity. It is also wise to work through the author's Theoretical Mechanics to get a taste of their style. I believe, contrary to many, that this book is appropriate for self study if one is willing to do the work (not only the exercises but following along pencil in hand). I suggest reading a passage and then covering it up and then trying to do the derivations by hand. I also suggest the study of Hermann Weyl's Space-Time-Matter for more on GR. My only complaint is the quality of print, which has is not the fault of the authors. It is especially annoying at first.

L&L, while elegant, is umotivated in the justifications that start their derivations. If the subject matter is grasped, then L&L is excellent for its directness. In brief, the volume is far from a learning tool.

First, I love this book, it is superb. If the comment is only on the contents, I'll give 5 stars without any hesitation.

However, one star is taken because I seriously despise the way the publisher treating this book, or, the entire classic Landau series. Some of the letters are vague. All letters are not dark enough, even a xerox copy is darker than this book! Some straight lines are broken.

Why can't the publisher make the classic of Landau be their own classic?

I bought this book for a graduate E & M physics class and found it utterly useless. Maybe it would be good for a math class, but even then I doubt it.

    This is a very usefull and accurate reference. This is a very technical book that will give you the answers to wave form propagations and dynamics of waveforms without focusing on specific antenna types. Like any engineering type book it can be dry as is the nature of most technical books. Highly recommended for the graduate level and above.

    5 out of 5 stars Harrington keeps things simple, but no simpler ..........2005-02-04

    This is a classic graduate textbook for Advanced Electromagnetics courses. One of the main things that I liked the most about this book is Dr. Harrington's strict adherence to one of Dr. Einstein's principles: "make things simple, but no simpler" - which works perfect for a graduate-level textbook. I am not implying that this book is difficult to follow than other commonly used graduate texts ("Advanced Engineering Electromagnetics" by Balanis comes to mind). In fact, this book is much easier to read and follow than books that tend to derive everything for you (which simply ends up cluttering your thought process with too much detail instead of focussing on the main concept in question). Read the chapter on "Cylindrical Waves" and compare it with its equivalent in Balanis's book, and you will understand my point. This book is quintessential for graduate students contemplating a career in Computational Electromagnetics.

    When I was first introduced to Electro-Magnetics (EM), I thought of Harrington's book as one of these oldies which senior professors have sitting on a dusty shelf. To the novice who I was it lacked the modern flair of the recent publications. Time went on, I took classes which tought me mathematical & numerical recipes, yet left me with little understanding of EM phenomenons. Soon enough and by my own fault I forgot the basic principles while concentrating on the math, and I lost interest. As a microwave design engineer later on I kept bumping into problems which had not yet been discussed in the litterature or for which I needed a simpler solution than the numerical approaches that are in fashion. I looked for the book which would offer the right mix of theoritical treatment and engineering relevance for the likes of me. I noticed that Harrington's was the most quoted one in the litterature just about, and thought that there must be a good reason for this. So I ordered a copy. I went through it with a pen in hand and solved the exercises at the end of each chapter. It was frustrating at first, because I had long lost the habit of manipulating the basic math of EM. I kept at it however, as the more I read the more I realised how much I ignored. I even got the taste for EM over time. Harrington's thus became a reference to which I turn almost every time I face a new EM problem. From a didactic point of view it is about the best textbook I have ever come across. Also it has more relevance to modern EM engineering than it seems at first sight: one will even find a mention of the coplanar waveguide (p.135)! I warmly recommend it to both the engineer and the student. But remember: read it with a pen in hand, and do the exercises at the end of each chapter! A couple of shortcomings I ought to mention though: the stationary formula for the input impedance of a wire dipole radiator (7.9) is not well explained (see Jordan & Balmain's, 14.09), nor are stationary formulae for the impedance matrix of general networks (3.8). Still: a very good buy. Harrington's "Field Computation by Moment Methods" is an other good one by the way.

    I was introduced to this classic while I was a master's (M.Tech) student at IIT Kharagpur, India in 1981.

    Prof. Harrington's very pithy approach provoked me to think deeply on the subject. It is because of this book that my interest in the subject has been alive and vibrant today.

    I met Prof. Harrington for the 1st time at the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Conference at Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1993. Prof. Harrington comforted me by saying that he has no plans to do any alterantions to this classic text in the near future.

    This book is not for the indolent and hence is not for causal reading like many lengthy and `verbose' textbooks on this subject. However, if I have ever an opportunity for organizing a 1st-year graduate course on EM theory, I shall use Harrington. Why wouldn't you ?

    After you read this book you will think that Jackson's 'Classical Electrodynamic' is brief and easy. I was required to learn for my job the physics of waveguides.
    I purchased this book because it was recommended by Jackson. In fact Jacksons chapter on waveguide is a summery of what you can find it here.
    Although very difficullt to read you can find all information about guided waves you need. I was never required to go beyond this book.

    Simply staten this is one of the finest books ever written in applied electromagnetics.There is a deligthful analytical treatment of everything related to wave-propagation in waveguides.But Mr Collin is not a dry-hearted teacher ,he is able to explain very complicated mathematical instruments with a very clear and fresh approach.Expecially good is the Green Function's treatment which is the best i ever saw in any book.Reading this book you will be able to progress from the intermediate to the very advanced level in Applied Electromagnetism.While it is true that nowadays there is a lot of software around that analyses almost every conceivable structure,it is also true that a analytical study gives you the possibility to sort the important from the accessory ,a thing no computer system is still able to do.I reccomend this book to anyone interested in advanced Electromagnetism.Only bad point is the price ,which is too much high expecially with the weak Euro we have now .On the whole a "top" book:5 stars!

    If you wanna master Jackson's classic bible, this is absolutely a prerequisite!!.
    Most people love Griffith, but this is more than it.
    Some people complain about this book which is too mathematical, but math is the language of E&M. Without strict, precise math, you gonna get nothing from E&M.
    This book, I bet, will solidify your all needed mathematical background to conquer Jackson's Classical Electrodynamics.
    Specially, the concept on conductor is explained very well with very nice examples in Ch.6 and dielectrics in ch.10 is well treated.
    Useful and powerful solved examples are available on the right place.
    The only not well treated topic is a radiation part, but Griffith will compensate for this.
    Again, I'll strongly recommend this book for anyone who will continue graduate study in physics, whatever he will major.

    This book is indeed very modular, if you have any previous EM training and the required mathematical skills you won't have any difficulty using this as a practical, working reference. As a consequence of the modularity, there is some repetition of the information but it's a small price to pay for the completeness of the individual modules.

    One of my favorite features of the writing is the clear references to previous results making it easy to review the references (and completely eliminates any need to search the index). I far prefer this to the usual method to make only vague references to previously developed concepts and is one reason why I find this is a good reference work.

    Overall, the level is more advanced than Cook though better written. Some of the development of the material is rather novel (e.g., Amperes Law) and considerably more approachable than corresponding works by Smythe (ugh), Peck, or Stratton. I recommend Feynmans lectures in addition to this book. I find the two complement each other quite nicely.

    I believe there are basically two breeds in the world of EM textbooks. One is obviously J.D. Jackson and the other E.M. Purcell. If Griffiths follows Purcell's approach, I'd say Wangsness is in the style of Jackson (of course no direct comparison is possible, Jackson does not really discuss statics anyway).

    Wangness is very much _detailed_ and provides ample examples, many of them kindly worked out. I am not sure if this book provides strong background in vector calculus, though. I always had troubles getting some geometrical intuitions. I guess I have learned more from Purcell in this respect.

    Of course, there are many other great books such as Lorrain/Corson, Feynman volume 2 and such. Should be nice to look at those as well.

    ... one might note that this book is developed in such a waythat makes it quite modular. At first Wangsness develops an examplecompletely, often leading to daunting equations. This is wonderful. However if you want to pick and choose a few key assumptions, and developed a more specific case, you can do that with Wagness' help, as well.

    Some of the problems are tedious, and void of instruction. Oftentimes, one has to result to digging through the chapter just to find the correct equation, leaving you with no physical intuition of what is really happening. If a professor drew up their own problems to accompany this text, you'd definitely have a winner. END

    OK, OK... so Griffiths is a very good text. I believe this book is better, having read both. Overall, 'EM Fields' is very well written, providing a strong background in vector calculus to bolster the topics that follow. I agree with the other reviewer who writes that explanations are based on mathematical rather than physical arguments. However, I find this style easier to understand. I do not believe that this formalism detracts from an overall grasp of the material, provided that physical intuition is used as well.

    This is an excellent source of problems if you are an undergraduate electrical engineering student enrolled in a class concerned with electromagnetics, which is probably one of the toughest courses you'll face as an undergraduate. Although the selection of problems is excellent, there is something to be desired with the explanation sections of most chapters. The author makes numerous references in equations to vectors that he fails to identify either verbally, or with a diagram. Also, I thought there were insufficient diagrams to adequately convey the concepts being presented.

    I also thought it was odd that the first chapter was dedicated to such an elementary concept as vector analysis when there are much more complex mathematical concepts such as multivariable calculus and partial differential equations being used throughout the book that are not given an explanation. If you are studying electromagnetics, the best textbook out there is "Engineering Electromagnetics" by Nathan Ida. Ida explains absolutely everything about electromagnetics, and the problems in this Schaum's outline complement both the material and the problems in that book very well. The last few chapters in this Schaum's are on antennas and waveguides. It is a nice overview, but it is a somewhat shallow treatment.

    A good supplement for that material is a 1968 Schaum's outline that is now out of print - "Schaum's Outline on the Theory and Problems of Transmission Lines" (ISBN 0070107475). It contains complete treatments of impedance and admittance matching topics, Smith chart fundamentals, plus many good worked examples and practice problems. The only drawback of this older outline is that the techniques used don't incorporate more of the modern numerical methods that are now more prevalent.

    It appears that the author assumes readers will already have a good understanding of calculus, vectors, and a somewhat advanced knowledge of electrostatics and electromagnetism! Readers without this background will likely struggle with the material!

    I have a reasonable background (to tertiary level) in mathematics and electrical engineering, but I still found this book difficult to follow in many parts!

    The reviews of theory at the beginning of chapters, are a bit too brief and therefore difficult to understand!

    Many solved calculations leave out intermediate steps, which makes it difficult to follow. The calculations should include all steps in their derivation and solutions, so that there would be no misunderstanding on how the solutions are determined.

    Therefore, this edition is NOT recommended for most people. This book is apparently only suitable for people who have a thorough knowledge of electrostatics, electromagnetics, calculus, and vectors.

    To make this book more practical and attractive to others, the material needs to be rewritten and expanded!

    Electromagnetism is a hard subject for many people, including myself. Schaums Outline of Electromagnetics, by Edminister, is an outstanding collection of problems and solutions more even when a companion in Electromagnetics using Mathcad, the leading technical calculation software. The big advantage of the interactive Outline is its use of LiveMath. You can change the starting parameters of a problem and watch as graphs are calculated in front your eyes.

    The student will find this is an exciting tool for exploring the universal laws governing electromagnetic waves and for gaining intuition about how various parameters affect the solution to problems.

    Finally, I am sure that the educator in physics and engineering will find a comprehensive selection of laboratory and homework exercises in Mathcad, with plenty of room for creativity and expansion.

    This book does what my class book (Hayt) doesn't--give a plethera of worked problems. I sit in class and watch my prof prove theorems, read Hyat's book that discusses the "why", and had difficulties pulling it all together. I NEEDED EXAMPLE PROBS! Schaum's proved extremely beneficial to me and I will probably not take any more EE courses without it as a supplement. If you need to look at detailed example problems to study and do your homework, this book is a no brainer if you want to pass this difficult topic.

    As an author of a book on a related subject (magnetic healing), I know firsthand how challenging it is to write in a user-friendly fashion about the complex subject of electromagnetic fields and their effect on health.

    B. Blake Levitt's extraordinary commitment of time and effort has resulted in a work that makes this complex subject easy to understand. Not only has she succeeded in explaining the untoward health effects of EMFs, but she also gives her readers a look into the complex political and commercial forces that have led to our current state of affairs.

    Faced with the potential of a cell phone tower being placed directly overhead in my high-rise apartment building, I used Ms. Levitt's book as a study guide and subsequently consulted her for additional background information. I have no doubt that this information was key in holding off the installation of the tower.

    This book is a "must read" for anyone concerned about EMFs -- and everyone should be!

    I am a research scientist with a background in psychosocial epidemiology who became interested in the impact of electromagnetic waves on physical, mental and emotional health when I was confronted with applications to construct telecommunications towers in our newly adopted home town. My ideas and information from physics courses were both rusty and dated. Moreover, in postgraduate work I had learned enough about environmental impacts on fetal and child development, neurological functioning, and sleep cycle disruption to be concerned. I wanted to efficiently come up to speed on theories about the waves' effects and peer-reviewed data that tested those theories. Ms. Levitt's book provided an extremely comprehensible and yet responsible orientation to the mechanisms by which electromagnetic waves operate, the research on their impact that was available as of its writing, and the political and economic influences of industry and governmental forces. PLEASE have her update it with the inclusion of the research of the last few years. Solid research findings are supporting her arguments at an escalating rate and they deserve to be disseminated. The public health hazards of unmonitored electromagnetic waves (especially in the rapidly proliferating rf frequencies) are real and an educated public is our best protection against their potential damage.

    While the human body (and of course animal bodies) are biological in nature, they have a strong electrical contant in the way that nerves pass messages and the way that the brain thinks. It is only lately, however, that the interaction between electromagnetic fields and the body's own electromagnetic activities have begun to be studied from a rigorous standpoint.

    Now in its third edition, this two volume set reflects the latest research in the field. It is an exhaustive look into the field with articles from a wide collection of researchers currently working in the field. Virtually all of the articles reflect research that has been done in the years since the last edition was published in 1995.

    While this includes such subjects as the use of cell phones and living under high voltage transmission lines, it also includes the use of EM fields in medical treatments, exposure limits, physiological effects and more. This book continues to be the definitive book on the subject.

    The book itself is only so-so I feel. I have taken two classes with Dr. Iskander and he uses it as a reference, and does point out where the errors are. The classes I find were/are great, he clearly knows and loves the material. The book though does not as clearly explain the principles as others I have come across.

    We used this book for a two quarter sequence in EM. The book is very solid and thorough in the begining with Maxwell's Equations. It is a little empty concerning static fields with only one chpater devoted to it. It is, however, a very readable texbook with most of the answers in the back

    I think that the book was alright but only because the author was teaching the course. The man is insane to be sure. Some of the lost details were filled in by his lecture while others were left as an exercise. I wish that I never had seen this book or taken this course.

    We used this book in our electromagnetics class at UT Austin. I did not like this book at all. It did not clearly explain many concepts. Further there were many errors in the book, for example, in the sample problems. The result was that you were never sure if you didn't understand what was being explained or if in fact the book was just plain wrong. This is not a good book for learning electromagnetics.

    very comprehensive textbook. Students can simply understand the material by reading it with decent mathematics. Pictures are very useful. The mathematics are decent. The author can make the textbook more concise. A good textbook if u really want to understand electromagnetism.
