Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Fluid Mechanics Resource.......2007-03-25
Cohen and Kundu did a commendable job in coming up with a book that provides an excellent foundation in fluid mechanics. This should be the first book on the shelf for anyone seeking a comprehensive coverage of fluid mechanics which is readable, well organized and easy to follow. The novice and the expert will find the book useful, helpful and handy.
Although there are some few minor errors in the book, these do little to detract from a very enlightening and student-friendly textbook.
Excellent Coverage.......2006-01-24
I found the coverage excellent. I was originally reading another text, but that book left out critical material that makes its presentation fuzzy (which is why I looked at this book instead). This book is excellent in that it builds up all the necessary machinery from first principles and explains things in a way that someone without any prior knowledge in fluids can understand the material.
Finally a good fluids book.......2005-02-06
I like this book much more than Fay or White or Batchelor.
I used it in a graduate course on fluid mechanics - I wish I had used it in my undergrad classes - I would have understood the material much better.
Comprehensive Book, but very sloppy editing with mistakes.......2004-09-27
This book is very comprehensive and covers all of the major aspects of fluid mechanics. However, there are several mistakes in this book. Some of the problem solutions are wrong, but above all, the equations are often referenced incorrectly. This can make it quite frustrating for students, especially when they haven't figured out that they are being misled.
Excellent book, but the new edition lacks in graphical style.......2003-10-28
Kundu's book is an excellent textbook for fluid mechanics at an intermediate level. However, this new eddition has a lot of graphical problems which, if doens't make you regret of buying it, will keep you always remembering of it... I hope the publishers correct those as soon as possible.

Book Description
The third edition of
Theory of Simple Liquids is an updated, advanced, but self-contained introduction to the principles of liquid-state theory. It presents the modern, molecular theory of the structural, thermodynamic interfacial and dynamical properties of the liquid phase of materials constituted of atoms, small molecules or ions. This book leans on concepts and methods form classical Statistical Mechanics in which theoretical predictions are systematically compared with experimental data and results from numerical simulations.
The overall layout of the book is similar to that of the previous two editions however, there are considerable changes in emphasis and several key additions including:
up-to-date presentation of modern theories of liquid-vapour coexistence and criticality
areas of considerable present and future interest such as super-cooled liquids and the glass transition
the area of liquid metals, which has grown into a mature subject area, now presented as part of the chapter ionic liquids
Provides cutting-edge research in the principles of liquid-state theory
Includes frequent comparisons of theoretical predictions with experimental and simulation data
Suitable for researchers and post-graduates in the field of condensed matter science (Physics, Chemistry, Material Science), biophysics as well as those in the oil industry

Customer Reviews:
Great Text.......2007-05-13
This book is perfect for a graduate level fluid mechanics text book. It covers both inviscid and viscous flow. Currie proves the equations with a great level of accuracy. This book is an ideal companion to study for a qualifying exam. This is probably the most thorough graduate level text on fluid mechanics. Currie takes the time to prove everything very accurately.
Book Description
Many introductions to fluid dynamics offer an illustrative approach that demonstrates some aspects of fluid behavior, but often leave you without the tools necessary to confront new problems. For more than a decade, Fluid Dynamics: Theoretical and Computational Approaches has supplied these missing tools with a constructive approach that made the book a bestseller. Now in its third edition, it supplies even more computational skills in addition to a solid foundation in theory. After laying the groundwork in theoretical fluid dynamics, independent of any particular coordinate system in order to allow coordinate transformation of the equations, the author turns to the technique of writing Navier-Stokes and Euler's equations, flow of inviscid fluids, laminar viscous flow, and turbulent flow. He also includes requisite mathematics in several "Mathematical Expositions" at the end of the book and provides abundant end-of-chapter problems. What's New in the Third Edition? · New section on free surface flow · New section on instability of flows through Chaos and nonlinear dissipative systems · New section on formulation of the large eddy simulation (LES) problem · New example problems and exercises that reflect new and important topics of current interest By integrating a strong theoretical foundation with practical computational tools, Fluid Dynamics: Theoretical and Computational Approaches, Third Edition is an indispensable guide to the methods needed to solve new and unfamiliar problems in fluid dynamics.
Customer Reviews:
More Math than Physics.......2004-08-02
This book is a very comprehensive one. It treats Incompressible flows, laminar and turbulent ones. It will guide you through the derivation of NS equation, boundary layer equation, and it will give you an introduction to turbulence. The book is complete in the sense that it deeply describes every aspect of the subject, but it does it ONLY from the MATHEMATHICAL point of view. No physics, no pictures (almost). It isn't ABSOLUTELY an introductory book: the level of mathematics is pretty high.
One of the best on the market.......2003-03-16
This is a fantastic fluid dynamics book! It is clearly written and easy to follow. The chapter exercises are very useful. Chapters include kinematics of fluid motion, conservation laws and kinematics of flows, Navier-Stokes equations, inviscid flows, laminar viscous flow, and turbulent flow. (The chapter on turbulent flow is excellent, balancing the right amount of theory and modeling.)
The book also includes chapters on important mathematical concepts such as base vectors and representations, Gauss, Green, and Stokes theorems, geometry of space and plane curves, coordinate transformations, potential theory, singularities of the first order ODEs, geometry of surfaces, finite difference applied to PDSs, and frame invariancy.
This is an excellent book that would be an excellent choice for advanced-undergraduate and graduate study.
BUY IT NOW !.......2002-09-26
I bought this book about a week ago and I'm very excited of having it, but it's hard for me to read this book at my current level. After briefly going through the pages, I think this book will be very helpfull to me in a year, or so.. If you're an undegraduate student and taking your 1st or 2nd course in "Fluid Dynamics", a better choice for you would be "Fundamentals of AERODYNAMICS" by Anderson - it will help you to start in "Fluids" easier than with this text, and it's more "student-oriented". However, if you're a graduate student (and by "graduate" I mean "just about to graduate" - don't wait - it seems to be a very serious text.
An inspirational writer.......1999-08-22
The books infuence and interminate info is one thing to aspire, but the person himself is one of unique interest. His very knowledge will keep you jumping out of your seat in full attentiveness of his every word uttered. He also is not limited to only one field but has aquired knowledge and skills of a variety of interests. As a person he is a very loving, caring, and humble indivisual who thinks of everyone but himself. With all of these qualities, creates an inspirational writer, whose work is revered by many. May God bless him, and continue his success!
the best fluid dynamics book of 90s.......1999-07-15
The best fluid dynamics book I've ever read because it is complete and accurate . It will be an everlasting value to keep at hand in every moment. Do use it whenever you need to understand or remember the kernel of the most common fluid dynamics phenomena. A must-have worth buying
Product Description
Basic Fluid Mechanicsis an antidote for oversimplified textbooks. If you would like to break away from the large publishers' approach that many professors describe as "fluid mechanics for the masses," "excessive fluff" and "delaying the appearance of PDE's to Chapter 12," this may be the book you have been looking for!
As with the first and second editions, this book rejects the modern, watered-down approach that (in at least one modern text) apologizes for the need to use concepts from freshman calculus and (in most cases) emphasizes everything but the basics of fluid motion. Written in an easy-to-read style that students have praised virtually everywhere the book has been used, there is no need to have artificial devices such as one-sentence descriptions on each page to help orient the reader. The worked examples have been integrated into the presentation in a format which insures that the basic concepts are easy to locate. That is, the major flaws of the book's major competitors, all of which are suitable for only a one-semester course, do not plague Basic Fluid Mechanics.
Basic Fluid Mechanics is an exciting and innovative junior/senior level text that provides an introduction to the basic concepts of fluid mechanics. It has also been used as an introductory text for graduate students with no prior knowledge of fluid mechanics. The book recognizes the fact that the modern fluid dynamicist has three research tools at his or her disposal, namely, analytical methods, experimentation and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). It makes full recognition of this triad of approaches that constitute today's unified theory of fluid mechanics.
