Only the best will do - and this is it.

Mandatory reading for anyone involved in optics. Goodman's books are treasure troves.

4 out of 5 stars A very nice book , but nothing is ever perfect..........2005-10-07

Overall I like the book for it is clear, the mathematics is lucid and has all the essentials in a comprehensive way. I have found it quite useful for research. In addition, for the most parts it is quite accurate.

Some criticisms though:
Contains everything from a more mathematical point of view. By that i mean, problems are usually not very physically motivated and some of the conclusions drawn are not very physical. that is you are given at the end of a discussion only an integral. It would have been nice if there were more discussions on the physics of Fourier Optics, for example pictures of actual experimental results or clear diagrams that show for example how does the diffraction pattern for a given input looks like. So getting an intuitive grasp of the subject at a pictorial level, where you can 'see' the results is a bit challenging to get out of this book. also very expensive.

5 out of 5 stars Goodman's Fourier Optics 3rd Edition: An Improved Classic........2005-08-12

For the last month, I have been using this book for self study to aid me in my work with lasers. Originally, I was working from the 1st edition (borrowed from a co-worker), but decided to buy my own copy. I wound up buying the 3rd edition, a significantly expanded version of the original.

Goodman's writing style is conversational and his treatment of the subject is thorough. I appreciate his inclusion of enough optics/E&M background within the text that I am not constantly having to go to my bookshelf to consult other references. Note, the 3rd edition has several helpful appendices not found in the 1st edition.

There are also many instructive problems given throughout the text to help students solidify their understanding of the material.

This is an excellent book for self study, and would certainly make a fine text for a senior undergrad course on the subject. I recommend it highly.

Charlie.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on the topic.......2005-07-14

This is the best book on Fourier Optics that I'm aware of. There is sufficient detail that you can follow the math, but also has well written text explaining concepts. The problems are sometimes trivial and sometime challenging, but they are very much an integral part of the book and doing them is necessary to get a full understanding of the material. There is a 3rd edition of the book with an additonal chapter, which is available at a much lower price, but Amazon does not seem to be carrying it yet. Hopefully they will soon. (...)

4 out of 5 stars A good path to physical optics and imaging theory.......2000-06-14

This book is cleary written. The basic theory of Fourier transform is included too. Fourier optics is a very strong tool in imaging and optics. I would say Goodman is an enginnering guy, but some physical insight is not very clear. Diffraction theory is easier to understand than J.D. Jackson's E&M. And the whole book is easier to read than Born and Wolf's Principle of Optics and has more details. After all, it is a good book for Fourier opitcs. But the price is too high.

    Book Description

Introduction to Mineralogy consolidates much of the material now covered in traditional mineralogy and optical mineralogy courses and focuses on describing minerals within their geologic context. It presents the important traditional content of mineralogy including crystallography, chemical bonding, controls on mineral structure, mineral stability, and crystal growth to provide a foundation that enables students to understand the nature and occurrence of minerals. Physical, optical, and X-ray powder diffraction techniques of mineral study are described in detail, and common chemical analytical methods are outlined as well. Detailed descriptions of over 100 common minerals are provided, and the geologic context within which these minerals occur is emphasized. Appendices provide tables and diagrams to help students with mineral identification, using both physical and optical properties. Numerous line drawings, photographs, and photomicrographs help make complex concepts understandable. Introduction to Mineralogy not only provides specific knowledge about minerals but also helps students develop the intellectual tools essential for a solid, scientific education. This comprehensive text is useful for undergraduate students in a wide range of mineralogy courses.

If you are going for PhD, then read this book.

But, if you are planning on getting a job in the industry, then forget this book. Study Analog and Digital design, VLSI, C.

2 out of 5 stars Very superficial coverage, and my book is missing sections.......2006-01-18

When I recieved the book, everything seemed to be in order, and it was only when I tried to read chapter 4 (Fundamentals of Light-Matter Interaction, which some might argue, is quite important) that I discovered, this valuable chapter had been replaced by incoherent babble about statistical methods and linear algebra, that did not match the table of contents. Furthermore, it didn't have anything to do with biology, or photonics. I don't know if all of the books contain this misprint, but I wouldn't buy it from Amazon (at least check it when you get it so that you can return it if your's is screwed up!)
Furthermore, the book has many interesting topics, but each is covered in a very superficial way. Mathematical models are avoided almost totally, and the ocassional equations have no derivation. This could be a plus for some, but I feel like this book would not help anyone solve actually engineering problems in biophotonics. It was merely a collection of interesting summaries.

4 out of 5 stars Biological Sciences Graduate Student.......2004-06-18

Like many introduction to optics books published by Wiley, this book is well organized and gives an excellent overview with some good illustrations (terrible representation of Optical Coherence Tomography). It is a good overview of many areas like bioimaging and biosensors. As a biological science graduate student, I found the few formulas easy to understand. FRET and FLIM should have been developed better. The web references are convenient.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to have a good overview on different biological optical applications.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific little book to start with - and continue to use.......2007-07-11

This book is a little gem - and it costs next to nothing.

It's a beautifully concise and remarkably clear introduction to the main principles of modern optics - the ones that you are going to need over and over again as you continue into the subject.

This book gives you a great overview and set of basic foundations for every-day modern optics. I return to it often for little insights and reminders, even after 37 years in the business.

5 out of 5 stars For the price Great.......2006-08-15

Great book to revise theory on Dual nature of light. Its like a nice handbook on optics. A full blown version would be very even nicer, with a math section to remind 'old' engineering like myself.

One word of caution, I think some graduate school background in Physics and Math is needed for engineers. I am an engineer (
I have a Phd, therefore it was easy for to me follow as I was reading), so I look at things slightly differently than Physicists.

4 out of 5 stars Decent, economical book for optics.......2006-05-11

I bought this book while taking an optics course using Hecht's Optics 4th ed. I found Fowler's book to be fairly useful, especially since I got to see optics from two different perspectives. The one really good thing about this book is it's price, and makes it a good reference book. The downside is that since it's quite short, it doesn't cover everything, moves fairly fast, and has no examples. For the price I paid, however, I am quite satisfied.

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific Text.......2006-03-27

I was fortunate to have a physics professor use this text in his undergrad class. At the time, I considered optics as a mere curiousity. Well, I enjoyed the book and course enough to continue with the subject, eventually getting a PhD in Optical Physics. Never regretted it. I still rely on Fowles as a frequent reference, especially when deriving Fresnel eqns from Maxwell's eqns, solid state refresher, and intro to quantum theory.

3 out of 5 stars There Are Superior Books!.......2004-04-10

This book by G.R. Fowles sufficies for one or two all-nighter studying sessions where a massive review of physical optics is needed.

The advantages to the book are that it is concise and attempts to cover a small fraction of the mathematics behind physical optics. Yet, there are some mistakes, such as an incorrect presentation of the forward Fourier Transform in the first chapters.

As far as the explanations and motivations for modern theoretical and applied optics, this book does not compare to "Optiks" by Born and Wolfe.

In essence, the books by Born or Hecht make this book the 'engineers reference' in the world of academia.

      Book Description

Waves represent a classic topic of study in physics, mathematics, and engineering. Many modern technologies are based on our understanding of waves and their interaction with matter. In the past thirty years there have been some revolutionary developments in the study of waves. The present volume is the only available source which details these developments in a systematic manner, with the aim of reaching a broad audience of non-experts. It is an important resource book for those interested in understanding the physics underlying nanotechnology and mesoscopic phenomena, as well as for bridging the gap between the textbooks and research frontiers in any wave related topic. A special feature of this volume is the treatment of classical and quantum mechanical waves within a unified framework, thus facilitating an understanding of similarities and differences between the two.

5 out of 5 stars Daunting at first perusal, but well worth reading.......2003-03-13

I'm working my way through this book right now. Obviously this book will only appeal to specialists interested in mesoscopic systems or multiple scattering of light and sound. I'm interested in light.

The best features of the book are:

      1) The author is an expert
      2) He shows you real research problems and points out the things that are not yet known. Many textbooks merely summarize what is already known.
      3) There are 36 problems, all of them worth doing. All of them have solutions. Because of the advanced level, the problems are usually not of the kind that have a simple answer to get right or wrong. Rather, the problems are usually detailed derivations that he walks you through. You could try to solve them on your own, but since this is the only place where he really gets down to the nitty-gritty, you probably won't even know where to start (I don't). I look at them more as tutorials.

Anyway, this is well worth buying if you can find it.

        Book Description

The growing demand for instant and reliable communication means that photonic circuits are increasingly finding applications in optical communications systems. One of the prime candidates to provide satisfactory performance at low cost in the photonic circuit is silicon.  Whilst silicon photonics is less well developed as compared to some other material technologies, it is poised to make a serious impact on the telecommunications industry, as well as in many other applications, as other technologies fail to meet the yield/performance/cost trade-offs. Following a sympathetic tutorial approach, this first book on silicon photonics provides a comprehensive overview of the technology. Silicon Photonics explains the concepts of the technology, taking the reader through the introductory principles, on to more complex building blocks of the optical circuit. Starting with the basics of waveguides and the properties peculiar to silicon, the book also features:

Silicon Photonics  is an essential tool for photonics engineers and young professionals working in the optical network, optical communications and semiconductor industries. This book is also an invaluable reference and a potential main text to senior undergraduates and postgraduate students studying fibre optics, integrated optics, or optical network technology.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars a glittering future?.......2005-04-11

The impetus for the book comes from the ever increasing demand for cheaper bandwidth. The aim is to be able to fabricate semiconductor hardware, implemented in silicon, rather than gallium arsenide, that can interface with an optical fiber. Ideally, this can then take advantage of the massive existing silicon fab infrastructure, both in hardware and expertise.

The book goes into huge detail about the current state of technology needed to try to make this happen. Attention is paid to how to actually make the devices on various configurations, especially silicon on insulator. This has emerged as a very promising avenue for further work. You get practical details on the photolithography and etching. Plus other sundry but essential topics as doping and how to make submicron waveguides.

Though when reading over this information, perhaps one cannot help wondering how much proprietary arcana has been withheld. The secret recipes that the companies in this field hold dear.

Ultimately, the hope of the book is to encourage students and researchers to enter this field and contribute to it.
