This book is lacking on examples. Sections will drag on for pages with no examples whatsoever. Some of the questions at the end of the chapters, seemingly, have nothing to do with the chapter whatsoever. I would not recommend this course to someone who intends to learn what they need from the book. The index is also a terrible reference. The text also needs to repeat what some variables are. Often times the author will introduce a new variable or a variable with an augmented subscript and not explain what it is. How frustrating.....!

5 out of 5 stars Buy the Second Edition!!!.......2005-01-30

This book is incredible! It will take the reader with an understanding of Calculus and Differential Equations and provide them with inside to a sufficient level of science and notation (from quantum mechanics, Russell-Sauders, etc) and give you all the skills required to design a laser. I have the good fortune of taking the class from the Author, who created the first blue-helium metal vapor laser. His book is providing the insight to the lectures, so I think I could have learned it all just from the text. By the end of this text, I will have designed my first laser, and considering I had never seen one until a few weeks ago... I am fully thankful to this great book, and all the experiences that the contributor gave us. The text has sufficient derivation to see that he's not just dropping down equations, and it is combined with the many figures which explain the physics and actual test data which give you a 'feel' for what is happening. I particularly like the chapter intros that tell you where you are going, but the chapters are packed with information. This was my first formal introducion to quantum mechanics, laser design, material gain, etc. and it is definately coherent. I predict that this book will be in my collection long after my other texts have been donated to other students or colleagues, because I will not part with it.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for beginners.......2003-08-25

I was looking for a good laser book tried svelto, siegman but they were written at a comparatively higher level, so I found this book, boy! what a relief. I guess the best part of the book is that the author doesn't stress too much on mathematics, electromagnetics or advanced optics. Moreover the early chapters deals with all the fundamentals required to understand lasers (that is covered in later chapters)

Bottomline: If you need a quick yet thorough introduction to lasers, this is the book.

I also recommend Orazio Sveltos book "Principles of Lasers"

4 out of 5 stars Experience.......2002-10-22

This book is one of the best that I have read, and I have read most of them. It is clear and to the point. It is both fundamental and practical. I use it as a reference and dont care much about the small errors it may have. Its advantages far outway its small number of errors. Its not a text book, its not supposed to teach the reader quantum physics or optics. I highly recommend this book for anyone that works with lasers.

Comprehensive in-depth reference tool - this is how the book has been characterized by a university professor using it for his course instruction. I concur. Amazing amount of practical detail in one refernce. Dimensionally a bit large and gangly but likely would require mulitple volumes if in standard book size. The web page link is a nice feature given the fast moving topic. Cleanroom reference is out of date and could be updated given the reference focus. Text discusssions well written and unusually pleasant to read.

5 out of 5 stars a nice book on high power lasers.......2001-04-27

The authors give almost every details on developing high power lasers. Compared with several other books where the high power lasers are discussed, this book provides far more than the basic physics and device design. I am surprised that the authors cover such a wide range of issues related. In particular, some very important issues which the industry care about very much, such as facet coating, heat dissipation, cooling and package, are explained and described. Since the authors are writing on the basis of their own experience, this book is sure to be a good reference book for either industry people or the people from universities.

5 out of 5 stars a very nice book for high power lasers.......2001-04-26

The authors in this book give almost every details on developing high power semiconductor lasers. If you are dveloping the high power laser for either industrial products or research, this book is a good reference.

I am surprised that such various details are coverd in this book. Compared with some other books where the design and physics for high power laser are addressed, this book appears to provide more details for readers. The authors are writing their own experience, which I believe it very valuable. The important parameters which the industry people care about, are explained and described, such as facet coating, heat dissipation and device package, which I thought the authors may write more about.

Since the materials in this book provide far beyond physics and device design, it is sure to be welcomed from both the industry and the universities where the intense research is under the way.

5 out of 5 stars Articles Representing the Current State of the Art.......2006-03-29

This book represents the state of the art in Optical Code Division Multiple Access (OCDMA). It is edited by Dr. Paul Prucnal, a pioneer and holder of 20 patents in the field. The various contributors represent a 'Who's Who' in the field. The individual articles represent the state of the art in OCDMA as it exists today and most point the direction where further research and development needs to occur.

Originally adopted for heavy use by the cell phone industry, CDMA has several advantages when integrated into optical networks. Still in its infancy, OCDMA promises to offer dramatic increases in security and performance with optical networks. Researched is being funded by DARPA in many areas because of the potential military applications.

Included with the book is a CD containing a complete 'genealogy' of optical CDMA with citations from its inception until the time the book went to press.

5 out of 5 stars Very practical book on the Mohs technique........2003-10-23

The editors and authors do a very nice job of "how to" instruction. This would be a nice text for residents during their Mohs rotation or fellowship. I know of no other text that is as complete with practical knowledge on the subject of Mohs micrographic surgery.
A wonderful cookbook with useful templates. A must for Dermatologic surgeons, plastic surgeons, or pathologists who practice the Mohs technique for skin cancer removal.

3 out of 5 stars Practical Laboratory Information.......2002-03-16

Gross, Steinman, and Rapini have written the first Mohs surgery textbook for the ASMS crowd (American Society of Mohs Surgery) -it seems that most, if not all, of the contributors are of the non-fellowship-trained variety. Unlike Dr. Mohs' or Dr. Mikhail's textbooks, it focuses less on actual outcomes of treatment for different diagnoses than it does on practical aspects of a Mohs practice. It covers needed equipment to reimbursement issues to training a Mohs lab technician. The chapters are short (some at 2 pages) and the text is not dense. Its treatment of individual tumors is very cursory. A better text for pertinent discussion of cutaneous tumors encountered in a Mohs practice is Mary Maloney's Surgical Dermatopathology.

Where this book really shines is its discussion of the nuts and bolts of running a Mohs laboratory. Chapter 11 "Cryostat and Cryostat Technique: Obtaining Quality Mohs Slides" shows several different techniques of freezing and mounting specimens (including the glass slide technique which is the best) in several pages of photographs. Chapter 12 "Mohs Slides: Trouble Shooting and Quality Assurance" has a nifty table of slide problems and probable sources of trouble. In addition, photographs document actual cutting of tissue on the cryostat blade and show common errors. Another excellent photo series shows mounted tissue on slides (thin vs. thick sections, venetian blind appearance of tissue due to dirty and poorly lubricated microtome, etc). Dr. Rapini has also included a chapter on normal cutaneous histology with excellent pictures.
In summary, the laboratory and pathology sections of the book are worth reading for Mohs fellows and technicians. The rest of the material is better addressed elsewhere.

          Book Description

This book covers the device physics of semiconductor lasers in five chapters written by recognized experts in this field. The volume begins by introducing the basic mechanisms of optical gain in semiconductors and the role of quantum confinement in modern quantum well diode lasers. Subsequent chapters treat the effects of built-in strain, one of the important recent advances in the technology of these lasers, and the physical mechanisms underlying the dynamics and high speed modulation of these devices. The book concludes with chapters addressing the control of photon states in squeezed-light and microcavity structures, and electron states in low dimensional quantum wire and quantum dot lasers.
The book offers useful information for both readers unfamiliar with semiconductor lasers, through the introductory parts of each chapter, as well as a state-of-the-art discussion of some of the most advanced semiconductor laser structures, intended for readers engaged in research in this field. This book may also serve as an introduction for the companion volume, Semiconductor Lasers II: Materials and Structures, which presents further details on the different material systems and laser structures used for achieving specific diode laser performance features.

          * Introduces the reader to the basics of semiconductor lasers
          * Covers the fundamentals of lasing in semiconductors, including quantum confined and microcavity structures
          * Beneficial to readers interested in the more general aspects of semiconductor physics and optoelectronic devices, such as quantum confined heterostructures and integrated optics
          * Each chapter contains a thorough introduction to the topic geared toward the non-expert, followed by an in-depth discussion of current technology and future trends
          * Useful for professionals engaged in research and development
          * Contains numerous schematic and data-containing illustrations
