5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory CFD Text.......2007-02-12

This book is a wonderful way to understand the fundamental concepts behind techniques such as the SIMPLE algorithm. Patankar begins in one dimension, expands his approach, and presents the results very clearly. His physical insights are very well presented, and his narrative style is easy to read. One may much more profitably read the recent literature in this area after having examined Patankar's text.

5 out of 5 stars best fundamental CFD book, must have.......2006-03-05

This is the best CFD book I ever read !! And it should be your first CFD book too. It's easy, short, concise and correct.

It doesn't have extensive coverage or any advanced topic like most of recent CFD book get. But the way it shines is that the author (one of the founders of recent CFD field) spent that much time discussing how to discritizing and evaluating the simplest form of commonly used pde eqations and boundary conditions. No advanced math involved, it's all simple algebra.

Everytime when I start a new problem and write down the discritized eqation, I double checked it using what I learned from the book before I input it into the computer. It just worked.

There's no magic in CFD, but this book is like a magic to me.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to code heat/mass transfer/fluid flow, buy this.......2002-12-17

This is extraordinarily well-written for anyone who knows a little bit about heat transfer, mass transfer, or fluid flow and wants to write a mathematical model to perform calculations in 1D, 2D or 3D. (Also works for electromagnetic equations of the same form--used it for my doctoral thesis.) It's very practically oriented, with clear explanations and good diagrams showing how the grid layout translates into code.

4 out of 5 stars A fundamental book on CFD.......2000-04-26

This is one of the ground breaking texts. I purchased a copy on the recommendation of a collegue (who has worked in the field for a while) when I started in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

I found the book a little bit difficult to get into. Having spent more time working through CFD problems, it all now makes sense - although I would recommend beginners to find something else more recent (such as An introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics: The finite volume method by Versteeg & Malalasekera) that has some of the more recent developments in the field.

It is still an invaluable reference to have on your bookshelf as it covers the fundamentals of CFD.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2000-03-11

A very good book to start learnig about CFD and an excellent book to everyone that works with CFD.

      Book Description

This book describes methodologies for performing numerical simulations of transport processes in heat transfer and fluid flow. The reader is guided to make the proper selection of simulation techniques and to interpret the acquired results based on the flow physics involved. Computer programs which are used to solve heat transfer and fluid flow problems are integrated into the text. Illustrative examples of thermo-fluid phenomena are provided in every chapter to enhance understanding of the subjects by offering the reader hands-on experience of numerical simulations.

Most of the fundamental transport processes in heat transfer and fluid flow, e.g. heat conduction in a solid body, convection heat transfer of a fin, laminar and turbulent heat transfer and flow in a duct or tube, and boundary layers over a flat plate are covered. A strong emphasis is placed on examinations of the thermo-fluid phenomena inside a flow passage (such as tube and a channel). The book contains detailed discussions on the formulation of the boundary conditions which is often the key issue in making successful numerical simulations of the physical phenomena of interest.

Simulations are carefully designed so that conventional 16-bit personal computers, such as IBM PC® or Apple Macintosh® can be used. Visualizing the simulated results in graphic form (plotting charts and line contours of physical variables) significantly enhances the reader's understanding of the important transport processes. The book is intended as an introductory text for numerical simulations of heat transfer and fluid flow phenomena. Description is simple and self-contained so that beginners can easily understand the material, yet it will also serve as a useful reference work for the practitioner. Exercise problems are supplied by which the reader can consolidate knowledge of simulation techniques described and gain further insight in the physical processes of interest.

The book contains two 3½ inch floppy disks, each of which stores a complete set of simulation source codes discussed in the text. These programs are recorded in ASCII format and can be run either on IBM PC® or Macintosh® using QuickBasic®. The programs are well-documented within the text as well as in the codes themselves with a number of comment statements. This helps the reader understand the flow of program runs and, if the reader so wishes, modifying the original source codes. To facilitate prescription of the physical conditions for simulations, these programs run in a highly interactive mode. In addition, the diskettes contain a number of compiled programs which can be executed without the QuickBasic® program.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2000-05-18

Heat transfer is employed în a wide range of applications including electronic cooling, heat recovery and energy conservation, manufacturing process, temperature control and many other applications în modern industries. Whilst there have been many new developments în the field, the basic technology remains essentially the same with the stimulus for change being the desire to meet the demands of new applications. Many problems relating to fluid flow and heat transfer în networks involve the use of complex computational procedures, and they are, in general difficult to model due to the randomness of the processes and sometimes the presence of fluid transients and instabilities.

In recent years Numerical Heat Transfer is an area which has generated much interest among researchers and thermal designers . The technical development in computer industries has created an increased impact on all the disciplines în heat transfer, including heat conduction, forced convection, natural convection, boiling, condensation, etc. Therefore, the book by Professor Nakayama is a record of the technical progress in the application of computational methods to some problems of fluid flow and heat transfer. The book covers boundary-layer flows to full elliptic flows, laminar flows to turbulent flows, and free convection to forced convection. A substantial part of the book (73 pages) describes problems of convective flows în porous media, which has been a topic of extensive research and development over the past 35 years. I believe that it was timely, in 1995, that Professor Nakayama presented an extensive survey on the subject of the application of numerical codes using personal computers (PC) to several heat transfer problems. Further specific emphasis in the book was placed on the application of a novel and very efficient integral solution methodology proposed by Professor Nakayama and his co-workers în 1994 to some non-similar boundary-layer problems. This method is a more general technique, in the sense that it not only yields the results identical to those from the classical Karman-Pohlhausen method for the case of Newtonian fluids, but it was also extended by Professor Nakayama and his associates to non-Newtonian power-law fluids and convective flows in porous media. Some contributions in the book are of direct relevance to the development of computer programmes, while others describe some of the available codes which have been furnished for the students to conduct numerical experiments of their own using a PC. These programes are both flexible and efficient, and have potential use în technology. The careful reader can readily see how to modify these programes for his own advantage.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing to offer.......1998-09-15

I had read many books about "Heat Transfer" but this book is out of reality !!! It's all of mathematical formulas and nothing more. It doesn't contain any comment on heat transdfer and the examples it uses are not helping. Also, the program listing is in Fortran (remember ?), something difficult to use (if you find a compiler first). In other words buy this book if you read ALL the others. If you want to write a project on heat transfer look out for better books. Anyway, this book is not edifying but it just confuses the terms and the values.

2 out of 5 stars Program difficult to understand. Theory complicated........1998-08-23

The theory is discribed with difficult mathematical analysis. Other books gives results and not just mathematical formulas. Also, there are no appendixes or pictures at all. The analysis is a zero and you have to know exactly and extensively the heat convection theory to read this book. In other words, buy this book if you are going to study heat transfer extensively (university project, being a proffesor etc.). I am studying Mechanical Engineering, I did read many books about heat convection and the way that this book is written isn't the appropriate. Finally, the program is not one but ten small programs. Written in Fortran, the least that the author could do is to give a small compiler. Who can find a Fortran compiler these days? Who knows Fortran well enough to change the program list to describe the program he/she studies ? Furthermore, this book is expensive for what it offers and it doesn't contain any book resources. I think that Mr. Nakayama (I had read other books of him and found them good) has to think over the writing of this book again. After all, it is written in 1995.

From the author: In a plasticating screw extruder, a polymer melt forms in the melting zone of the extruder. Pressurization of the molten polymer takes place in the melting and the metering sections so that the melt can flow through the restricted passage of the die and assume a desired shape. In a melt fed extruder, the throughput is governed by the pressure rise over the entire length of the extruder. The pressure developed in the screw channel may also be employed in rapid filling of molds, such as those in injection molding. When the geometry of the screw, the barrel temperature, and the die are selected, a unique set of operating parameters arise for a particular flow rate or screw speed. In the present study, numerical and analytical methods are used to calculate the transport in the extruder and the pressure drop in the die. An iterative numerical method based on solving the equations of motion and energy in the screw channel and a correction scheme to couple the die with the screw channel is discussed. The numerical algorithm is capable of handling an arbitrary variation of the viscosity of the polymeric fluid with the shear rate and temperature. The results obtained by simulating the fluid flow in the screw channel are compared with available numerical and experimental results in the literature, indicating good agreement. The performance characteristics of the extruder, for chosen thermal boundary conditions and screw geometry, are presented for different die geometries and different fluids. The important considerations that arise in the numerical simulation of the extrusion process are also discussed.

From the author: A new simplified approach has been proposed for the numerical simulation of the thermal transport in corotating, tangential, and self-wiping twin-screw extruders. It is assumed that the flow domain in a twin-screw extruder can be divided into (i) the translation region (T-region), which represents a flow similar to that in a single-screw channel and (ii) the intermeshing region (I-region), which is located between the two screws. The two regions are simulated separately and then coupled for each screw section to model the overall transport in tangential and self-wiping twin-screw extruders. A finite difference method is employed for the developing flow and temperature fields in the T-region, in order to minimize the computing effort, while a finite element method is employed for determining the interchannel flow mixing and the thermal transport in the I-region. Results are obtained in terms of temperature, velocity, and pressure variations along the screw channels and mixing between the two screws.
