5 out of 5 stars Five Stars With no Doubt........2007-03-15

During my years as Structural Calculyst this book was always on my right side on my desk, and when I needed it, it was ready to help me find my way. One really very good Engineer has never found all formulas in his head, instead he should be able of finding them out on good references and really know how to use
them all. This is the best reference book you are going to find when formulas is your subject, just buy it!
The only book I know better than this one is written in German and few people are able to read in German, so!

4 out of 5 stars very useful handbook.......2007-01-04

Very helpful book in engineering job, but unfortunately I've found some mistake (the reason for 4 stars).

In general you can find lot of formulas in this book. This book is also very well known and that's the reason for recommending it. You can just refer to Roark's formulas and everybody knows what's that.

4 out of 5 stars Great Reference Tool.......2006-10-29

This Book contains every fromula that i would ever need during my Mechanical Engineering Course.
It is quite easy to use, and the print is clear the index is user friendly

5 out of 5 stars Well Thought Out Upgrade from Previous Editions.......2006-04-18

I have three editions of this book: the classic 4th edition, the useless 5th edition and this, the 7th edition.

The 4th edition has simple format, is easy to use, but lacks methods for more sophisticated hand analyses and is sparse on explanations. The 5th is best used for a doorstop.

This edition is an excellent combination of the usefullness of the 4th edition with modern and more advanced methods.
The layout of each section has excellent explanatory material and provides the simple 4th edition type equations backed with more involved/advanced formulas which are very useful.

My hat is off to the authors. This is probably the best reference for those nasty stress and deflection hand calculations we all have to do from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2005-10-01

Roark's has been and remains an excellent resource for the structural engineer and designer regardless of the edition. This is a referance I use on a daily basis. Typically the first book I reach for.

Book Description

Unlike most other texts on the subject, this clear, concise introduction to the theory of microscopic bodies treats the modern theory of critical phenomena. Provides up-to-date coverage of recent major advances, including a self-contained description of thermodynamics and the classical kinetic theory of gases, interesting applications such as superfluids and the quantum Hall effect, several current research applications, The last three chapters are devoted to the Landau-Wilson approach to critical phenomena. Many new problems and illustrations have been added to this edition.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good resource for advanced topics.......2007-01-13

I learned statistical mechanics from `Statistical Mechanics' by K. Huang and `Statistical Mechanics' by S.K. Ma. In my opinion, most books on the elementray principles, including the book by K. Huang, are too complicated for beginners. The best treatments as far as I know are given by `Statistical Physics, part I' by Landau and Lifshize and the one by S.K. Ma. Another weak points in Huang's book are the discussions about ideal quantum gases. It presents formal mathematical methods to study this problem. I think that this approach is also too complicated for beginners and sometimes bury the relevant physical ideas. In this part, the best treatment for the ideal Bose gas is given by `Statistical mechanics' by T.D. Lee (in Chinese), and for the ideal Fermi gas given by S.K. Ma.

For these parts, I should give 3 stars. However, the strong parts of Huang's book is the chapters on the advanced topics. The writting is compact and clear. They can be served as a good introduction to the modern theory of critical phenomena and superfluidity. Further, they are useful references for research. In addition, the formal manipulation for quantum ideal gases is necessary for research though it seems a little bit complicated for students. For all these, I gave 4 stars to this book.

Finally, I should say that the approach of Huang's book is not based on the kinetic theory though it spends a few chapters on this aspect. The reason why the kinetic theory is put before the chapters on SM, in my opinion, is to emphasize the important role played by collisions between particles to establish thermal equilibrium and the validity of the basic assumption of SM, as indicated by S.K. Ma in his book. I think previous reviews about this are misleading.

4 out of 5 stars Not standard, Not so bad.......2003-07-23

As repeated by reviewers below, this is NOT STANDARD textbook on statistical mechanics because it stresses the kinetic theory. If reader would like to learn the equilibrium theory, this book might be embarassing. However, this book is recommended to anyone who is interested in "unusual" viewpoint. I prefer Huang to other numerous too standard textbooks. But I am a little disappointed that some interesting topics are removed in the new edition, such as the Chapman-Enskog method.

Now, it is NOT SO BAD.

1 out of 5 stars Least favorite of all I've seen.......2003-06-06

Huang approaches the subject as a series of proofs: he does not make physical arguments, and his writing is wooden. Instructors--avoid this book!

Some have said that this book approaches stat mech from the refreshing view of kinetic theory. But it leaves out the Fokker-Planck and Langevin approaches, by which the Boltzmann equation is usually solved. Anyone interested in this approach would be *far* more rewarded by Landau's Physical Kinetics.

Anyone interested in Gibbs theory should consult Landau or Sommerfeld.

Anyone who wants good problems (and real applications) would be better served by the canonical McQuarrie.

Anyone who wants a feel for what the subject *actually now is* should see Kadanoff or Chandler. Actually I think allowing students to leave stat mech without seeing the monte carlo algorithm or solving a stochastic equation is a crime.

1 out of 5 stars Unreadable.......2003-06-03

The reviewer below who said that this book pursues primarily a kinetic theory - Boltzmann Transport Equation approach, got it right. It really is a fearsome, and by and large, pointless read. Our professor used this book in our stat. mech. class back in 1992. He also used Mahan's Many Particle Physics book in our solid state course and de Genne's Superconductivity text in our superconductor course, so that gives you an idea of what kind of person likes Huang. Most students I've talked to feel that this text is the worst sort of student pain. The pain you feel when after exerting colossal effort trying to understand, you realize at the end of the semester that you didn't learn anything, and that you could have, if only the instructor had chosen one of any number of better books. I am completely mystified as to why and how this book has reached a 3rd edition. Perhaps there are too many physics professors out there who don't care about pedagogy.

4 out of 5 stars not bad but lost direct view point.......2003-02-12

i think you sluold have a strong background about the history of
statistical mechanics, and have a sense (or taste) of abality to
know what or why this book wanna to do, then Kerson's book is not bad

Book Description

Symplectic structures underlie the equations of classical mechanics and their properties are reflected in the behaviour of a wide range of physical systems. Over the last few years powerful new methods in analysis and topology have led to the development of the modern global theory of symplectic topology, including several striking and important results. At its publication in 1995, Introduction to Symplectic Topology was the first comprehensive introduction to the subject, and has since become an established text in this fast-developing area of mathematics. This second edition has been significantly revised and expanded, with new references and examples added and theorems included or revised. A section has been included on new developments in the subject, and there is a more extensive discussion of Taubes and Donaldson's recent contributions to the subject. From reviews of the first edition: '...an authoritative and comprehensive reference...McDuff and Salamon have done an enormous service to the symplectic community: their book greatly enhances the accessibility of the subject to students and researchers alike.' An authoritative and comprehensive reference...McDuff and Salamon have done an enormous service to the symplectic community: their book greatly enhances the accessibility of the subject to students and researchers alike.

The discussion begins with classic topology and cover a variety of final year undergraduate topics such as complex manifolds and inverse differential techniques before moving into the vastly complex world of Symplectic Topology.

    Book Description

Nonlinear Interactions provides a coherent and unified treatment of analytical, computational, and experimental methods and concepts of modal interactions. This book is an obvious extension of Ali Nayfeh's well-known book Applied Nonlinear Dynamics (with Bala Balachandran). These methods are used to explore and unfold in a unified manner the fascinating complexities in nonlinear dynamical systems. The systems discussed are drawn from fluid mechanics and structural dynamics.

Nonlinear interactions between high-frequency and low-frequency modes are of great practical importance. Through the mechanisms discussed in this book, energy from high-frequency sources can be transferred to the low-frequency modes of supporting structures and foundations, and the result can be harmful large-amplitude oscillations that decrease their fatigue lives. On the other hand, these mechanisms can be exploited to transfer the energy from a system to a sacrificial subsystem and hence decrease considerably the vibrations of the main system and increase its fatigue life.

    Book Description

Analytical Mechanics is the investigation of motion with the rigorous tools of mathematics. Rooted in the works of Lagrange, Euler, Poincare (to mention just a few), it is a very classical subject with fascinating developments and still rich of open problems. It addresses such fundamental questions as: Is the solar system stable? Is there a unifying 'economy' principle in mechanics? How can a point mass be described as a 'wave'? And has remarkable applications to many branches of physics (Astronomy, Statistical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics). This book was written to fill a gap between elementary expositions and more advanced (and clearly more stimulating) material. It takes up the challenge to explain the most relevant ideas (generally highly non-trivial) and to show the most important applications using a plain language and 'simple' mathematics, often through an original approach. Basic calculus is enough for the reader to proceed through the book. New mathematical concepts are fully introduced and illustrated in a simple, student-friendly language. More advanced chapters can be omitted while still following the main ideas. Anybody wishing to go deeper in some direction will find at least the flavour of recent developments and many bibliographical references. The theory is always accompanied by examples. Many problems are suggested and some are completely worked out at the end of each chapter. The book may effectively be used (and has been used at several Italian Universities) for undergraduate as well as for PhD courses in Physics and Mathematics at various levels.

    Book Description

This book provides a comprehensive treatment of dynamics of space systems starting with the basic fundamentals. This single source contains topics ranging from basic kinematics and dynamics to more advanced celestial mechanics; yet all material is presented in a consistent manner. The reader is guided through the various derivations and proofs in a tutorial way. The use of "cookbook" formulas is avoided. Instead, the reader is led to understand the underlying principle of the involved equations and shown how to apply them to various dynamical systems.

The book is divided into two parts. Part I covers analytical treatment of topics such as basic dynamic principles up to advanced energy concept. Special attention is paid to the use of rotating reference frames that often occur in aerospace systems. Part II covers basic celestial mechanics treating the two-body problem, restricted three-body problem, gravity field modeling, perturbation methods, spacecraft formation flying, and orbit transfers.

A Matlab® kinematics toolbox provides routines which are developed in the rigid body kinematics chapter. A solutions manual is also available for professors. Matlab® is a registered trademark of The MathWorks, Inc.

      Book Description

Three subjects of major interest are contained in this textbook: Linear elasticity, mechanics of structures in linear isotropic elasticity, and nonlinear mechanics including computational algorithms. Engineering and mathematics are in a reasonable balance: After the simplest possible, intuitive approach follows the mathematical formulation and analysis. Computational methods occupy a good portion of the book. There are several worked out problems in each chapter and additional exercises at the end of the book. Very often, mathematical expressions are given in more than one notation. The book is intended primarily for students and practising engineers in mechanical and civil engineering. Most of them will be faced with problems of advanced materials and should have a correct understanding of the basic ideas even if they use software to solve them. Students or experts from applied mathematics, materials science and other related fields will also find it useful.

        Book Description

The second edition of Analytical Fluid Dynamics presents an expanded and updated treatment of inviscid and laminar viscous compressible flows from a theoretical viewpoint. It emphasizes basic assumptions, the physical aspects of flow, and the appropriate formulations of the governing equations for subsequent analytical treatment. Topics covered include · Basic concepts · A novel approach to linking complicated thermodynamics to the equations of motion · Shockwave dynamics · Calorically imperfect gas flows · Supersonic sweep · Shock-expansion interference · Unsteady, one-dimensional flows · First- and second-order boundary-layer theory Particularly noteworthy is a new, general treatment of forces and moments. The one-dimension flow chapter also discusses internal ballistics and the Riemann function method for solving hyperbolic equations. These two chapters, along with those dealing with thermodynamics, sweep, interference, imperfect gas glows, and several of the appendices are new to this edition. Analytical Fluid Dynamics: Second Edition answers the continued need for fluid dynamic books that combine physical insight with careful development of the corresponding mathematics. With his focus on the development of analytical skills for dealing with inviscid and viscous flow, the author achieves this goal and provides a text valuable as a research reference or a graduate-level text.
