      Book Description

The Physics of Semiconductors provides material for a comprehensive upper-level-undergraduate and graduate course on the subject, guiding readers to the point where they can choose a special topic and begin supervised research. The textbook provides a balance between essential aspects of solid-state and semiconductor physics, on the one hand, and the principles of various semiconductor devices and their applications in electronic and photonic devices, on the other. It highlights many practical aspects of semiconductors such as alloys, strain, heterostructures, nanostructures, that are necessary in modern semiconductor research but typically omitted in textbooks. For the interested reader some additional advanced topics are included, such as Bragg mirrors, resonators, polarized and magnetic semiconductors are included. Also supplied are explicit formulas for many results, to support better understanding. The Physics of Semiconductors requires little or no prior knowledge of solid-state physics and evolved from a highy regarded two-semester course at the University of Leipzig.

5 out of 5 stars Nice survey of modern semiconductor science.......2006-11-11

This book is extremely well illustrated. It is a pleasure thumbing through the book and learning something in a new area just by looking at all the diagrams and pictures. However, the discussions of semiconductor devices are pretty sketchy, and formula derivations are mostly non-existent. For example, the book gives expressions for the different mobility limits for ionized impurity and phonon scattering, but does not derive any of them like Seeger would, although references are given. Unlike the Seeger classic, in its 9th edition, where new topics kind of look like they were just thrown in, this book has a more coherent integrated treatment of "new" topics with the older classical topics. If you want in-depth discussions, you will likely be disappointed. However, if you are looking for a broad survey of modern areas of interest in semiconductor physics and technology, with lots of well-chosen figures and diagrams, this is a fine book.

      ASIN: 0471984477

      Book Description

Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) are becoming more and more widely used in a braod range of fields, including telecommunications, optical computing, consumer electronics, laser material processing and the biomedical sciences, to manipulate light through micro-optical systems. In order to get the most out of such DOEs, knowledge of the design process, fabrication, packaging in a particular system, and operation is required.

Digital Diffractive Optics discusses in detail the design and simulation of DOEs, before considering the main fabrication techniques. The increasingly important CAD/CAM tool requirements for the production of DOEs are covered, and a chapter is devoted to the crucial area of systematic fabrication error compensation. Finally, the integration and use of DOEs in a number of different systems, including various opto-electronic and opto-mechanical systems, are discussed.

Digital Diffractive Optics will be of great interest to all those involved in the fields of optical engineering and photonics. It presents a clear view of the whole process, from design to fabrication and application, without overstressing the, often complex, mathematics, and will thus be accessible to postgraduate students and those entering the field, as well as more experienced engineers and scientists.

5 out of 5 stars Modern, Straight Forward and Useful Optics Book.......2001-09-30

I've been designing diffractive elements for about two years. I first started knowing almost nothing about DOEs (except that they worked on diffraction). Even after two years, and a couple of successful designs, I was still in the dark on some of the methods used in designing DOEs.

Bernard really puts a good book together. He starts with the very basics (diffraction), moves into designing DOEs (iterative and natural optimization methods, like GA and SA), and ends up with chapters on actually fabricating devices. He covers in very informative detail (like, say for the working engineer), and goes short of giving the shop away.

If you're tired of attending seminars on designing DOEs that just cover fourier diffraction principles, or books that really leave out the nitty-gritty, then Bernard's book is for you. There is an assumption that you have a decent understanding of optics, and are comfortable with at least two years of college math (calculus and DEs/PDEs).

4 out of 5 stars suitable for undergrad but too easy for grad student.......2005-11-03

If you are an undergraduate, this book is pretty good and it covers a lot of funamentals.

If you are a grad student, get Coldren's book - "diode lasers and photonic integrated circuits" or Chuang's "Physics of optoelectronic devices" though the theory there is hard for undergrad. Another good, easier book is "Principles and Applications of Optical Communications" by Max Ming-Kang Liu. The most recent book on the theory is "Physics of optoelectronics"-- very good book.

There are some errors in this book such as the rate eq for lasers. The real strength of this book is that it contains a lot of real structures, materials, and applications. Also, the semiconductor part is very complete. However, an updated version would be ideal.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-07-06

This is an excellent book on optoelectronics. I think it is suited for undergrad and grad students and practicing researchers as well. With reviews on semiconductor fundamentals, junction physics, bandstructure this book contains almost everything that you need to know on optoelectronics. With the in-depth analysis of the optoelectronic devices you can come back to review some of the basic staff that you need to know. I think it is a must buy for optoelectronics/photonics engineers. It is somewhat dated though and needs an updated edition.

2 out of 5 stars Well, it isn't worth the money..........2004-03-02

i have pallab as my teacher, and of course he's using his book to teach from. I find the book hard to follow, poorly written, and illogically ordered. He needs to spend signifigant time working on the usability of the book. The one redeeming factor is that he is an excellent teacher so it somewhat makes up for the book being in such disarray.

        1 out of 5 stars Weak book.......2000-04-22

Unfortunately my professor used this book for the class. The book is not clear, almost nothing is demonstrated, the index is very short and incomplete, the exercises are not concize, it lacks a lot of theory, and many important devices such as the second harmonic generator are not covered in the book. If I could turn back in time I would never spent a cent on this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource material.......2000-02-23

Beginning of book reviews key principles of quantum theory and necessary semiconductor processes to understand device applications. The text is comprehensive in specifying ways to quantify all aspects of optoelectronics and caters to the beginning student as well as the researching professional

          Book Description

The evolution of Si-based optoelectronics has been extremely fast in the last few years and it is predicted that this growth will still continue in the near future. The aim of the volume is to present different Si-based luminescing materials as porous silicon, rare-earth doped silicon, Si nanocrystals, silicides, Si-based multilayers and silicon-germanium alloy or superlattice structures. Moreover, the different devices needed for an all-Si-based optoelectronics are treated, spanning from light sources to waveguides, from amplifiers and modulators to detectors. Both the very basic treatments as well as applications to real prototype devices and integration in an optical integrated circuit are presented. Many still unresolved problems are underlined: the problem of electrical transport in low-dimensional Si systems, the possibility of gain in Si-based systems, the low modulation speed od Si-based LEDs, etc. The book gives a fascinating picture of the state-of-the-art in Si microphotonics and a perspective on what one can expect in the near future. For these reasons, it might be useful not only to graduate students but also to all researchers involved in this field.

            Book Description

This text on contemporary optical systems is intended for optical researchers and engineers, graduate students and optical microscopists in the biological and biomedical sciences. It consists of three parts: The first discusses high-aperture optical systems, which form the backbone of optical microscopes. Here particular attention is paid to optical data storage. The second part is on the use of non-linear optical techniques, including non-linear optical excitation (second and third harmonic generation and two-photon microscopy) and non-linear spectroscopy (CARS). The final part of the book presents miscellaneous techniques that are either novel or well known but finding new applications. An example of the latter is adaptive optics, which is a well-established method, for example, in astronomy. However, its application in eye imaging in combination with high power pulsed lasers, opens a novel approach to eye surgery.

            Book Description

Modern fabrication techniques have made it possible to produce semiconductor devices whose dimensions are so small that quantum mechanical effects dominate their behavior. This book describes the key elements of quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and solid-state physics that are necessary in understanding these modern semiconductor devices. The author begins with a review of elementary quantum mechanics, and then describes more advanced topics, such as multiple quantum wells. He then disusses equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. Following this introduction, he provides a thorough treatment of solid-state physics, covering electron motion in periodic potentials, electron-phonon interaction, and recombination processes. The final four chapters deal exclusively with real devices, such as semiconductor lasers, photodiodes, flat panel displays, and MOSFETs. The book contains many homework exercises and is suitable as a textbook for electrical engineering, materials science, or physics students taking courses in solid-state device physics. It will also be a valuable reference for practicing engineers in optoelectronics and related areas.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars very readable text as well as a reference book.......2003-04-12

this is a very readable book on semiconductor devices that operate on quantum principles. the book starts with Schrodinger's equations, discusses in detail the different perspectives of the particle in a box problem, then gradually develops to other theories, for example the Boltzmann transport equations. other processes (impact ionization) are also covered in detail. ofcourse optical processes are not discussed as this is only a device-level book. suitable for electrical engineers to learn the basic underlying concepts that dominate the present day state-of-the-art devices.

4 out of 5 stars very good introduction to the field of quantum devices.......2003-04-05

often do i refer to this book regarding any conceptual clarification on quantum phenomena. people who do research in this field may find this book as a good reference. it is written more for the electrical engineers who like to delve more into the quantum realities. provides a very good introduction to the quantum theories that one needs to know to study different state-of-the art devices. although not that much details is covered on the devices but it creates the much needed background on theory. it starts from Schrodinger equations and then gradually builds the other related concepts. for example detail discussion is given on Boltzmann transport equations. its an easy reading.
