Introduction to Computational Science: Modeling and Simulation for the Sciences
Angela B. Shiflet Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0691125651 |
Book Description
Computational science is a quickly emerging field at the intersection of the sciences, computer science, and mathematics because much scientific investigation now involves computing as well as theory and experiment. However, limited educational materials exist in this field. Introduction to Computational Science fills this void with a flexible, readable textbook that assumes only a background in high school algebra and enables instructors to follow tailored pathways through the material. It is the first textbook designed specifically for an introductory course in the computational science and engineering curriculum.
The text embraces two major approaches to computational science problems: System dynamics models with their global views of major systems that change with time; and cellular automaton simulations with their local views of how individuals affect individuals. While the text is generic, an extensive author-generated Web-site contains tutorials and files in a variety of software packages to accompany the text.

Large Eddy Simulation for Incompressible Flows: An Introduction (Scientific Computation)
P. Sagaut Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
Accessories:
ASIN: 3540263446 |
Book Description
The only one of its kind devoted entirely to the subject, Large Eddy Simulation presents a comprehensive account and a unified view of this young but very rich discipline. LES is the only efficient technique for approaching high Reynolds numbers when simulating industrial, natural or experimental configurations. The author concentrates on incompressible fluids and chooses topics well to treat both the mathematical ideas and the applications with care. The book addresses researchers as well as graduate students and engineers. The second edition was a greatly enriched version motivated both by the increasing theoretical interest in LES and the increasing number of applications. Two entirely new chapters were devoted to the coupling of LES with multiresolution multidomain techniques and to the new hybrid approaches that relate the LES procedures to the classical statistical methods based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations.
This 3rd edition adds various sections to the text like a careful error analysis, on filtered density function models and multiscale models. It also contains two new chapters on the prediction of scalars using LES which are of considerable interest for engineering and geophysical modeling. The part on geophysical flow has much to offer on a critical current issue.

Lattice Boltzmann Modeling: An Introduction for Geoscientists and Engineers
Michael C. Sukop , and Daniel T. Jr Thorne Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
Accessories:
ASIN: 3540279814 |
Book Description
Lattice Boltzmann models have a remarkable ability to simulate single- and multi-phase fluids and transport processes within them. A rich variety of behaviors, including higher Reynolds numbers flows, phase separation, evaporation, condensation, cavitation, buoyancy, and interactions with surfaces can readily be simulated. This book provides a basic introduction that emphasizes intuition and simplistic conceptualization of processes. It avoids the more difficult mathematics that underlies LB models. The model is viewed from a particle perspective where collisions, streaming, and particle-particle/particle-surface interactions constitute the entire conceptual framework. Beginners and those with more interest in model application than detailed mathematical foundations will find this a powerful "quick start" guide. Example simulations, exercises, and computer codes are included. Working code is provided on the Internet.

A Modern Introduction to Quantum Field Theory (Oxford Master Series in Statistical, Computational, and Theoretical Physics)
Michele Maggiore Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0198520743 |
Book Description
The importance and the beauty of modern quantum field theory resides in the power and variety of its methods and ideas, which find application in domains as different as particle physics, cosmology, condensed matter, statistical mechanics and critical phenomena. This book introduces the reader to the modern developments, assuming no previous knowledge of quantum field theory. Along with standard topics like Feynman diagrams, the book discusses effective lagrangians, renormalization group equations, the path integral formulation, spontaneous symmetry breaking and non-abelian gauge theories. The inclusion of more advanced topics will also make this a most useful book for graduate students and researchers.Customer Reviews:

Introduction to Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics
C. Pozrikidis Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195093208 |
Book Description
Introduction to Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics is the first textbook to combine theoretical and computational aspects of fluid dynamics in a unified and comprehensive treatment. The theoretical developments are carried into the realm of numerical computation, and the numerical procedures are developed from first principles. This book offers a comprehensive and rigorous introduction to the fundamental principles and equations that govern the kinematics and dynamics of the laminar flow of incompressible Newtonian fluids. It simultaneously illustrates the application of numerical methods to solving a broad range of problems drawn from diverse areas, and discusses the development of pertinent computational algorithms. Topics considered include the description and analysis of flow kinematics; the computation of exact solutions of hydrostatics and hydrodynamics by solving ordinary differential equations; the study and computation of potential flow; the theory and numerical study of flow at low Reynolds numbers, linear hydrodynamic stability, and vortex motion; boundary-integral methods for potential and Stokes flow; and finite-difference methods for the Navier-Stokes equation. An appendix contains a primer of numerical methods that allows for ready reference. A unique synthesis of the theoretical and computational aspects of its field, Introduction to Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics serves as an ideal text and source reference for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and researchers in the various fields of science and engineering, including mechanical, aeronautical, and chemical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, and computational science. It assumes no prior experience in computational fluid dynamics, and provides references for specialized topics. Each section is followed by theoretical and computer problems that allow the reader to acquire hands-on experience and simultaneously develop insights into the physics of a variety of flows.

An Introduction to Linear and Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis: A Computational Approach
Prem Kythe , and Dongming Wei Manufacturer: Birkhäuser Boston ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0817643087 |
Book Description
Although finite element courses have become more popular in the undergraduate and graduate engineering, science, and applied mathematics curricula, there are very few introductory textbooks geared toward students accustomed to using computers for everyday assignments and research. 'An Introduction to Linear and Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis' fills this gap, offering a concise, integrated presentation of methods, applications, computational software tools, and hands-on programming projects. Suitable for junior/senior undergraduate and first-year graduate courses, the book is aimed at students from a variety of disciplines: engineering, physics, geophysics, and applied mathematics.
Unlike existing texts designed with specific applications to a particular field of mechanical, civil, or chemical engineering, the emphasis here is on interdisciplinary applications. One- and two-dimensional linear and nonlinear initial/boundary value problems are solved using finite element, Newton's, and conjugate gradient methods. Mathematical theory is kept to a minimum, making the text accessible to students with varied backgrounds.
Features:
* Software tools using Mathematica, Matlab, Fortran, and commercial finite element codes, such as Ansys, integrated throughout the text
* Numerous examples and exercises with diverse applications to linear and nonlinear heat transfer, fluid flows, mechanical vibrations, electromagnetics, and structures
* Supporting material and selected solutions to problems available at the authors' websites: http://www.math.uno.edu/fac/pkythe.html and http://www.math.uno.edu/fac/dwei.html
* Minimal prerequisites: a course in calculus of several variables, differential equations and linear algebra, as well as some knowledge of computers
Primarily a classroom resource, the book may also be used as a self-study reference for researchers and practitioners who need a quick introduction to finite element methods.
