Book Description
Fully updated-the classic comprehensive introduction to color technology
The Third Edition of Billmeyer and Saltzman's Principles of Color Technology combines the clarity and ease of use of earlier editions with two decades of advancement in the theory and technology of color. Defining color as "a certain kind of light, its effect on the human eye, or (most important of all) the result of this effect in the mind of the viewer," the book offers detailed coverage of color, colorants, the coloring of materials, and reproducing the color of materials through imaging.
While retaining important material on the color technology of paints, plastics, textiles, and other materials, the Third Edition features in-depth coverage of computer-generated color, digital image capture, desktop color printing, and color management-achieving color fidelity among scanners, digital cameras, and other color imaging devices. The new edition of Principles of Color Technology offers expanded coverage that includes:
* Measuring color quality-a new chapter describes the principles and applications of setting instrumental color tolerances
* Mathematics of color technology-a new appendix presents principles of color technology using mathematics
* Color modeling-additional material covers CRT displays and color printing
Supplemented with copious numerical examples, graphs, and illustrations that clarify and explain complex material, as well as side bars that present technical details in a well-organized, accessible manner, this excellent and exciting introduction for newcomers to the field is also a valuable reference for experienced color technologists, color specialists, chemical and industrial engineers, computer scientists, research scientists, and mathematicians interested in color.

Student Review of B&S Principles of Color Technology.......2001-10-14
The latest edition of Billmeyer and Saltzman's Principles of Color Technology is a complete rewrite. The author's use of in-text examples and "back to principles" appendix facilitate understanding of the concepts. The range of color science conepts (from basic colorimetry to an end-to-end color imaging system) make it a must-have for the color science student to the experienced color professional.

Customer Reviews:
This is it!.......2002-07-21
I finally found "THE" book to meet our needs. I am an assistant teacher at the Electronics Engineering School at Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria, Lima, Peru. For years we have been trying to find a book on which to rely on for the complete course of Television Engineering. Our choice has been made, this is the book. Despite the few differences between the second and third edition, which we celebrate, the contents of this books is a condensed coverage of all topics related to television in a modern view. Our goal is to teach our students the widest range of knowedge about television systems, starting from analog TV up to DTV, and happily, this books covers it all. My favorite chapter is the one related to CATV systems, I found a lot of material previously unknown to me, good to know, if you find that I have been in the television business for the last 10 years and I have been Technical Manager of one of the most popular stations in my country. I recommend you to buy this book, read it deeply and you will learn a lot about the most innovative technologies of the new "vision" of "Television".
An excellent resource.......2000-01-02
The subject matter is presented in superb technical detail, but in a straight-ahead style that should be readily understood by any reader with a good grounding in basic electronics. The emphasis is on what the equipment does and why; and although there are no schematics or discussions of particular circuit details, this information is readily available from other sources and its omission is not a flaw in the case of this book. This book takes more of a "systems" approach and discusses the video and audio waveforms, the type of equipment used to generate, process, transmit and receive them, and the various technical standards used in television and computer video. As an audio/radio engineer starting a new career in the television field, I chose this book to help get me up to speed on video technology, and it has not disappointed me.

This 'bible' needs up-dating - - but is the foundation stone.......2007-07-11
This 'bible' in the world of Color needs up-dating - - but it is the foundation stone. If you are seriously in the color business, you will need this book on your bookshelf from time to time.
The "Color Science Bible".......2005-10-10
I bought this book for my studies in the M.S. Color Science program at the Rochester Institute of Technology. It is a very detailed and math-oriented view of many aspects related to color & color science. I've sometimes heard it referred to as the "Bible" of Color Science.
Bottom line is that it's a great reference book for detailed, mathemetical views of Color Science topics. It's not a very good book to read for general information or an overview on color science. I'd highly recommend "Principles of Color Technology" by Roy Berns as a good all-around 1st book on color science. Much easier and more enjoyable to read. The Wyszecki & Stiles is more of a reference book if you need the next level of detail after that.
Comment.......2005-08-13
The book is very complet, but a little difficult. It's the bible of colorimetry!!!
Worth the money.......2000-04-03
This book has a ton of useful information from lighing science to technical color computations. The book (bible) has allot of data charts that can be used for sample or comparision calculations. If you are involved in Optics, Lighting, Illumination, industrial, automotive or aerospace. Then you got to get his book!

In our overstimulated, color-saturated society it is easy to forget the impact of color in the dull world before cheap dyes and plastics. Colors is a delightful little book, highly illustrated and packed with intriguing information. It traces the history of dyes and pigments from cave paintings to modern textiles. The book's four sections cover the uses of color in ancient times; its development and refinement in the Middle Ages; the explosion of supply and demand after the Renaissance; and the triumph of industrial chemistry in synthesizing and inventing colors. Production processes often paralleled those of alchemy, giving an almost magical quality to colors. Dyes were expensive in medieval Europe and could increase the price of a cloth tenfold; thus color was used to indicate social status, with aristocrats in bright robes standing out against the drab mob. Since antiquity, writers have compiled technical manuals on dyeing and pigment manufacture, often using more ancient texts, so that a great many antique recipes and techniques have been preserved. We learn, for example, how Indian yellow was made from a concentrated extract of the urine of cows fed exclusively on mango leaves (which was not healthy for the cows). Every page of the book has interesting tidbits of information, such as the derivation of blue jeans (from bleu de Genes, Genoa blue, a form of indigo). Clearly written and well-designed, Colors reminds us of the powerful ways color permeates our lives. --John Stevenson
Book Description
From the painted caves at Lascaux, 40,000 years old, to the medieval cloth industry to today's computerized chemistry, this engaging book surveys the history of dyes and pigments-in a work as rich, varied, and colorful as a box of crayons.

Customer Reviews:
A LOT of information packed into a deceptively small package........2006-03-21
_Colors: The Story of Dyes and Pigments_, is an excellent little book to read if you are interested in colors. It covers pre-history up through the modern era, and it discusses some of the chemistry, much of the mineralogy, and a lot of the economics & politics that went into the use of different dyes & pigments through the eons.
It is also lavishly illustrated, with many many photos, including photos of famous works of art, close-up photos showing artistic techniques, photos of artists' materials, and photos of historical treatises relating to cloth dyeing and other skills. There is a lot of good technical content, including explanations of the differences between dyes, pigments and lakes, and details of attempts in antiquity to create artificial colors, going as far back as the Egyptians.
The chapters are Painting & Dyeing, which covers paints and dyes from antiquity to the Middle Ages; Colors in the Middle Ages, which covers new technological & economic developments in the Middle Ages; The Explosion of Supply and Demand, which covers how the increased trade of the Renaissance, Enlightenment Era, and the Industrial Age drove the search for new colors; and The Triumph of Industrial Chemistry, which describes how colors are made today.
There is also a chapter titled Documents, which has excerpts from a number of historical works about dyes & pigments, and that chapter alone is worth the price of the book. The bibliography is also excellent.
It was a bit slow in places, and since it was originally written in French, there is a certain flow to the text that is subtly different from many contemporary books written by native English speakes. But, the differences are not unpleasant, and for the most part the text is very engaging.
I did notice that it repeats the statement that India Yellow was made from the concentrated urine of cows who at only mangoes, and according to Victoria Finlay in _Color: A Natural History of the Palette_, that provenance is mythical. But that was the only jarring note I found in the entire work.
A treasure chest of interesting trivia.......2001-10-16
I am a Color Manager for one of the worlds largest paint companies and even though I have been working with pigments for 15 years I have found this book to be a treasure chest of interesting trivia that I didn't know or had long forgotten.
But this book is not just for chemists. If you are like me interested in art, especially paintings, you will find that this book gives you a wealth of information and facts that one can use to better understand the development of art through the centuries.
I can highly recommend this beautifully illustrated booklet which is fun to read to everybody (not just color nerds like me).

Weeds can cause many problems in turf situations. One of most undesirable characteristics of weed infestation is the disruption of turf uniformityso vital to the golf, sports field, and managed landscape industry. Weed clumps, color variation, and patches can drive turf managers crazy, and have a pronounced effect on the perceived quality of the maintenance program. Very often, weeds are the results of weakened turf and specific spoil problemsthe
Color Atlas of Turfgrass Weeds explains why, and helps you problem-solve for effective management.

Customer Reviews:
A must get book if you want to know about weeds.......2003-03-05
This is an excellent book that really describes what the weeds are and what to do about them. Great clear REAL pictures of the weeds so there is'nt confusion with a drawing and what you are looking at in your turfgrass. I highly recomend this book to people in the lawn care and landscaping business. Or if your somebody that really likes to take care of your yard and want's a detailed book on what you see as the "bad" stuff in your grass and beds. I am a lawn care guy myself and love it.

Customer Reviews:
buy it---use it!.......2007-01-18
For anyone who is a woodworker by trade, this book is indespensable. The large color pictures of the wood allow you to show clients what the different species are without having to have lots of wood peices laying around cluttering the shop up.
It is also very informative. While there are lots of species listed that i have never heard of, there is also a good description and usage list for each type of wood.
World Woods in Color.......2007-01-09
What made this book so great it is exactly what I was looking for. I'm a wood turner and I like to pass on the information about wood used in bowls customers purchase. The information also helps me with matching woods and finishing the product.
Steve Portrey
horrible shipping.......2006-04-19
Well, it's the middle of april and I ordered in February. I still don't have the book. Why pretend to have a book when there aren't any in stock and no affiliates have it either? They keep saying "we'll find a copy eventually" and keep taking people's money on it. I noticed that they still say that new purchases of it ship within 2-3 weeks. Bull-pucky.
Useful and beautiful.......2004-08-04
Pick it up, thumb through it, and enjoy the well-printed pictures of each wood sample. There are over 250 of them, all unique, all showing the characteristic grain and coloring of the species. The eye-candy is just the icing on a very substantial cake, however.
Suppose you cut down an apple tree and decide to keep the lumber - do you season in the round, or cut it first? How long will it take? As well as the right way to season each wood, this gives its resistance to insect attack and special considerations in machining, nailing, veneering, and gluing. Only so much can be said in one page, but Lincoln covers the basics in a systematic way.
Appendices cross-reference the common and latin names, and list suppliers and organizations that provide information. Those tables are helpful but weak. Suppliers come and go too fast for that list to have lasting value. The "table of uses" of each species in each application is also helpful but limited. Veneer is not mentioned in that table, even though Lincoln discusses it elsewhere. The indices could also handle conflicting names better. I just gained access to some fresh-cut American linden, and wanted to know how to season it. The word 'linden' has only one index entry, even though the name is applied to several species, and that entry doesn't match the linden I have. I was supposed to look for 'basswood.' Now I know, but lists of synonyms would have helped. More information about each wood would have been useful, too: which woods create dust with breathing hazards? What about the percent change, radially and tangentially, during drying? How does the appearance change when quartersawed?
Still, the book's strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. It's just pretty to look at, for one thing, but it has good information as well. I'm happy with it.

This one-of-a-kind book will become the standard color guide to disease diagnosis and pathogen identification for all golf course superintendents and turfgrass practitioners. No other book contains as many detailed color photographs of this quality. Numerous photographs of each disease are provided. The
Color Atlas of Turfgrass Diseases also includes step-by-step color photo guidance on diagnostic techniques for laboratory analysis that can be used by practitioners.
Customer Reviews:
Only in Japan.......2004-06-06
I bought this book hoping to increase my knowledge of turf grass disease identification. The book is very in depth and informative but most of the pictures are from golf courses in Japan. Since most of the disease I see is on residential properties, they dont look anything like the pictures in the book. Most of those were taken on putting greens on Japanese bent grass. Its a good book, but not if your working with tall fescue.

Book Description
The only things truly universal in music are those that are based on biological and/or perceptual facts.
Tuning Timbre Spectrum Scale focuses on perceptions of consonance and dissonance, which are defined in the Harvard Dictionary of Music: "Consonance is used to describe the agreeable effect produced by certain intervals as against the disagreeable effect produced others. Consonance and dissonance are the very foundation of harmonic music... consonance represents the element of smoothness and repose, while dissonance represents the no less important elements of roughness and irregularity.”
Tuning Timbre Spectrum Scale begins by asking (and answering) the question: How can we build a device to measure consonance and dissonance? The remainder of the book describes the impact of such a "dissonance meter” on music theory, on synthesizer design, on the construction of musical scales and tunings, on the design of musical instruments, and introduces related compositional techniques and new methods of musicological analyses. This new and greatly revised edition of William Sethares' classic book includes an attached CD-ROM that contains over three hours of sound examples that demonstrate the ideas in action, as well as computer programs that enable readers to conduct their own explorations. A new chapter contains a detailed explanation of how the software works. It incorporates several important simplifications over the full presentation in the current Chapter 7 in order to allow it to function in real time. Another new chapter describes the various ways that the software can be used. New sections throughout the book bring it up to date with the current state of the subject.
Tuning Timbre Spectrum Scale offers a unique analysis of the relationship between the structure of sound and the structure of scale and will be useful to musicians and composers who use inharmonic tones and sounds. This includes a large percentage of people composing and performing with modern musical synthesizers. It will be of use to arrangers, musicologists, and others interested in musical analysis.
Tuning Timbre Spectrum Scale provides a unique approach to working with environmental sounds, and there are clear applications for the use of inharmonic sounds in film scoring. The book will also be of interest to engineers and others interested in the design of audio devices such as musical synthesizers, special effects devices, and keyboards.

excellent resource book.......2006-11-11
I am glad I found this book researching material for my dissertation on music and new technology. A unique book!
A Seminal Work.......2004-12-18
Decades from now, this book will be seen as a seminal work -- a book that opened up spacious new frontiers to musical exploration and dramatically changed the sound of the world's popular music.
All previous analyses of music started and ended with the "harmonic series" -- the pattern of partials that is produced by virating strings, for example. The musical scale, tuning, and instruments of Western music have all evolved to maximize their "fit" with this pattern of partials.
But electronic music synthesis frees musicians from the restrictions of the harmonic series. This begs the question: can emotionally-satisfying music be made with inharmonic timbres? If so, how? What, exactly, is the relationship between tuning, timbre, spectrum, and scale?
By clarifying this relationship, Sethares lays the foundation for a "Grand Unified Theory" of music. That Grand Unified Theory has not yet been created -- which means that YOU can help design it; YOU can write its seminal works; YOU can perform music that's like nothing ever heard before, and yet which resonates as emotionally as the very best works of the Common Practice Era.
YOU can be the Beethoven of the 21st century -- but first, you have to BUY THIS BOOK. :-)
Good Work.......2000-10-01
The other review is over-enthusiastic. Hardly an example of unbiased scientific inquiry, the author basically sets out to prove something and does so without searching for contradictory evidence. As a result, we get a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Very interesting, never-the-less.
Reader's should be warned that this is *not* an introductory text, and that it is not an overview of the area of tunings.
Additionally, it is interesting that the word 'timbre' is in the title, as there is not one iota of original perceptual research here...and timbre is a preceptual phenomenon.
A Landmark Book in the History of Musical Sounds.......1998-01-08
While experimenting with musical instruments and sounds, the author observed a new relationship between the timbre of sounds and the tunings in which sounds are played. In an effort to understand this relationship the author hypothesized a mechanism for relating spectrum to scale. He then went to the heart of the matter, figured it all out, and proved the hypothesis. All of this and much more are clearly presented in Tuning, Timbre, Spectrum, Scale (TTSS).
TTSS is written so as to be comprehensible to a wide readership. It was a pleasure reading this informative and stunning book. In places it is even entertaining as the author's sense of humor shows through. The book should eventually find its way into many libraries (public, private, and institutional) because it contains new and important original contributions to many areas of music.
There are 345 pages divided into 13 sections and 6 short appendices. There is an extensive bibliography, a discography, an index, and an accompanying Compact Disk containing 33 sound examples. All sound examples are explained in the book, and they provide convincing support for the author's premises.
A succinctly written Prelude tells what Tuning, Timbre, Spectrum, Scale is all about. I found myself looking forward to learning more about the ideas outlined here. You'll find yourself anxious to learn where a particular concept will lead. The author has a knack for gradually building up an idea to its climax while keeping the reader involved, and this is rare amongst books where new ideas are being presented.
The book begins, in Section 1, with a challenge to current thinking concerning the consonance of musical octaves. A new idea is presented and its validity demonstrated using audio examples on the accompanying CD. ... Superb demonstration!... Section 1 also introduces a unique and practical method of quantifying the tonal consonance of any musical sound. The next four sections are entitled respectively: The Science of Sound, Musical Scales, Consonance and Dissonance of Harmonic Sounds, and Related Spectra and Scales. These sections taught me much about musical sounds and concepts. They are well written and include many informative figures, and they provide descriptions of more unique audio examples on the CD.
The Science of Sound section addresses the issue: what is sound? This leads into clear discussions of relevant terms. The reader is taken on a fascinating journey into timbre, pitch, scales, tunings, spectral analysis, beats and consonance. After reading about Musical Scales, you'll feel like an expert, and gain an appreciation of scales since the time of Pythagoras. You'll understand the profound influence they have had over the centuries in defining musics of an era.
The next section on Consonance and Dissonance provides a historical perspective of the way in which these terms have been used, and then focuses on Sensory Consonance. This has the unique property, amongst consonance/dissonance concepts, of being quantifiable in a scientific sense. It is here that one discovers a fundamental connection between the consonance works of Helmholtz 1877, Plomp & Levett 1965 and Partch 1974, which leads to a reasonably complete understanding of sensory consonance. The plot thickens as the connection between sensory consonance and musical scales unfolds. This connection is then transformed into practice as the author creates new and unique songs, A Bell, A Rock and A Crystal. It is amazing to observe musical passages created in this way.
The following section, Adaptive Tunings, describes the author's algorithms for tuning in real time, or , as is sometimes described, how to "tune on the fly". Once again, the accompanying CD provides adaptively tuned musical passages verifying algorithmic predictions. It seems that music is about to expand its domain of musical sounds in a significant way. Read the book to find out why and how this is happening.
The book contains much, much more. There is a section on Gamelans, a theory for 10 TET, dissonance curve computer programs, sensory consonance score of a Scarlatti sonata, analysis and synthesis of harmonic and non-harmonic sounds. Fourier Transform analysis and limitations, dissonance surfaces for chords, and a well thought out final section: Speculation, Interpretation, Conclusion.
I believe the author also recognized a basic limitation of Western music, and again went to the heart of the problem, figured it all out, and then proved his point. The result of these efforts is this exceptional book.

The Gold-toned standard.......2000-10-10
Before this book came along, the must-have text was Ulicheny's Digital Halftoning (MIT Press). Everyone (who cares about halftoning or dithering) had it and used it, and in fact Kang references it extensively. The problem is that Ulichney's 1986 state-of-the-art had a huge number of gaps. Like color, multi-level (rather than bilevel) output options, and combining ordered and random dithering techniques.
Kang covers these areas and cites all the work since then. It's not as clearly organized (having 3 PhD thesis readers must have helped Ulichney). It also lacks any code samples (what? shipping product?), for which Graphics Gems, Vols. I-V are about the only options.
Still, if your work requires you to do any halftoning implementation or modification, you need this book. If you can only afford one, read Ulichney from the library and then buy Kang since he quotes the earlier work extensively.

THEROUX IS TOPS !.......2005-05-01
Gifted author, wordsmith, scribe, literary craftsman, all of these describe Massachusetts writer Alexander Theroux. And he proves it in The Primary Colors.
Sometimes eccentric, always entertaining, each of these essays reads like one man's imaginative, magical dialogue. To Theroux, "Blue is a mysterious color, hue of illness and nobility; the rarest color in nature."
It is, of course, also Windex, Blue Willow china, bluegrass, and even baseball player Vida Blue. And, it is the favorite color of the Amish with their blue gates. In the author's gifted hands the color does not limit his discourse, but is a springboard for a trip around the world.
Rather than suggesting age, cowardice or decay, yellow to Theroux is a positive hue - a reminder of the sun, spring, and much of autumn's beauty. This sunny shade is light, perfume and the color of the Cadillac driven by /Sammy Glick in "What Makes Sammy Run."
Calling red the boldest of colors, Theroux writes, "It stands for charity and martyrdom, hell, love, youth, fervor, boasting, sin, and atonement." From Tabasco sauce to rubies to London buses and fezzes, the author's observations regarding crimson are both witty and surprising.
He exaggerates, he's rambunctious; Theroux references everything - art, history, music, psychology, movies, gossip, sociology, and television. All of which make fascinating reading.

art to poetry.......2000-07-21
These essays are a glorious excursion into the depth of color. Each becomes an adventure story combined with poetry. The history and sociology that Mr. Theroux brings into the world of simple RED, BLUE, and YELLOW uplifts and excites. Each paragraph makes you want more and more.
