5 out of 5 stars CFD Bible.......2006-02-21

I refer to this book as my CFD bible. I first used this book approximately 19 years ago as part of a two semester course in CFD. Since that time, I have refered to this book often.

The authors treatment of the subject aids in the understanding of the subject. Their building block approach tends to lead the reader from simple examples to more complex problems. Their treatment of both Euler and Navier-Stokes equations and their solution has been a great benifit in my work. Their explinations of potential theory and it's use as a CFD tool have been responsible for many hours save on development and coding of computational tools to analyze aerodynamic shapes.

I am so thankful for the text I currently have that I plan to pick up a second text just to have the updated material.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book.......2005-05-18

The book is one of best books in Computational Fluid Mechanics And Heat Transfer area I have read. It not only covers basic knowledge but also talk a lot about advanced technique about CFD. It is very helpful for students just like me. After I bought this book by using a discount from coupons-center.com, I have used the book for one year. I also found CFD code is very helpful. If you are beginner to CFD coding or want to some free code as reference, this book has many good code examples. you can learn from the code examples and then can easily make your CFD code.

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2003-10-27

I learnt CFD on this book. Definitively I give it 5 star, unfortunately I can't give it 6. It covers all the CFD from the beginning to the advance level. You will use it as an undergraduate, graduate, PhD, post doctorate researcher. No kidding. There are some codes, the book contains all the information you need, it is easy to read, never criptic like many others. I suggest you to buy this book without any esitation if you are really wanting to learn and do CFD. There are more specific books on some arguments, say, turbulence, but none is more comprehensive and well written like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......1999-10-13

As a researcher working with CFD codes, I found this book very useful. It has algorithms to all types of problems ranging from simple heat or wave equation to Navier-Stokes equations. All the algorithms are well explained and precise. I strongly recommend this book for anyone pursuing CFD.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CFD books I've ever read!!!.......1999-06-20

I've read many CFD books, but this is the best one. It is well organized and explained from the fundamental to advanced about the numerical approaches. I recommend this book not only for the beginners but for experts. It is really worth of having this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory CFD Text.......2007-02-12

This book is a wonderful way to understand the fundamental concepts behind techniques such as the SIMPLE algorithm. Patankar begins in one dimension, expands his approach, and presents the results very clearly. His physical insights are very well presented, and his narrative style is easy to read. One may much more profitably read the recent literature in this area after having examined Patankar's text.

5 out of 5 stars best fundamental CFD book, must have.......2006-03-05

This is the best CFD book I ever read !! And it should be your first CFD book too. It's easy, short, concise and correct.

It doesn't have extensive coverage or any advanced topic like most of recent CFD book get. But the way it shines is that the author (one of the founders of recent CFD field) spent that much time discussing how to discritizing and evaluating the simplest form of commonly used pde eqations and boundary conditions. No advanced math involved, it's all simple algebra.

Everytime when I start a new problem and write down the discritized eqation, I double checked it using what I learned from the book before I input it into the computer. It just worked.

There's no magic in CFD, but this book is like a magic to me.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to code heat/mass transfer/fluid flow, buy this.......2002-12-17

This is extraordinarily well-written for anyone who knows a little bit about heat transfer, mass transfer, or fluid flow and wants to write a mathematical model to perform calculations in 1D, 2D or 3D. (Also works for electromagnetic equations of the same form--used it for my doctoral thesis.) It's very practically oriented, with clear explanations and good diagrams showing how the grid layout translates into code.

4 out of 5 stars A fundamental book on CFD.......2000-04-26

This is one of the ground breaking texts. I purchased a copy on the recommendation of a collegue (who has worked in the field for a while) when I started in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

I found the book a little bit difficult to get into. Having spent more time working through CFD problems, it all now makes sense - although I would recommend beginners to find something else more recent (such as An introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics: The finite volume method by Versteeg & Malalasekera) that has some of the more recent developments in the field.

It is still an invaluable reference to have on your bookshelf as it covers the fundamentals of CFD.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2000-03-11

A very good book to start learnig about CFD and an excellent book to everyone that works with CFD.

Book Description

Although many books have been written on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and many written on combustion, most contain very limited coverage of the combination of CFD and industrial combustion. Furthermore, most of these books are written at an advanced academic level, emphasize theory over practice, and provide little help to engineers who need to use CFD for combustion modeling. Computational Fluid Dynamics in Industrial Combustion fills this gap in the literature. Focusing on topics of interest to the practicing engineer, it codifies the many relevant books, papers, and reports written on this combined subject into a single, coherent reference. It looks at each topic from a somewhat narrow perspective to see how that topic affects modeling in industrial combustion. The editor and his team of expert authors address these topics within three main sections: Modeling Techniques-The basics of CFD modeling in combustion Industrial Applications-Specific applications of CFD in the steel, aluminum, glass, gas turbine, and petrochemical industries Advanced Techniques-Subjects rarely addressed in other texts, including design optimization, simulation, and visualization Rapid increases in computing power and significant advances in commercial CFD codes have led to a tremendous increase in the application of CFD to industrial combustion. Thorough and clearly representing the techniques and issues confronted in industry, Computational Fluid Dynamics in Industrial Combustion will help bring you quickly up to date on current methods and gain the ability to set up and solve the various types of problems you will encounter.

3 out of 5 stars Great reading, bad viewing........2007-05-23

I've been very negatively surprised to discover that all figures (included vectors, contours and 3D isosurfaces) are in grey scale!
Colors in CFD results visualization are necessary to read correctly an image! In fact on the most of the grey images it's impossibile to understand where are located values of any physical property reported. I paid this book 170 dollars: I would be much more happy to pay even 50 additional dollars to receive a book with colors where they're necessary!!
It is the only existing book that fills the gap between CFD and combustion books and it is a very well written book. It starts describing CFD and CFD models for combustion and some basics of combustion and then presents some CFD case studies in different areas of combustion engineering like in steel, aluminium, glass, petrochemical industry, gas turbines.
Recommended to CFD analists and engineers (experienced or beginners) that are interested in combustion modelling.

      Book Description

The discontinuous finite element method (also known as the discontinuous Galerkin method) embodies the advantages of both finite element and finite difference methods. It can be used in convection-dominant applications while maintaining geometric flexibility and higher local approximations throught the use of higher-order elements. Element-by element connection propagates the effect of boundary conditions and the local formulation obviates the need for global matrix assembly. All of this adds up to a method which is not unduly memory-intensive and uniquely useful for working with computational dynamics, heat transfer and fluid flow calculations. Discontinuous Finite Elements in Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer offers its readers a systematic and practical introduction to the discontinuous finite element method. It moves from a brief review of the fundamental laws and equations governing thermal and fluid systems, through a discussion of different approaches to the formulation of discontinuous finite element solutions for boundary and initial value problems, to their applicaton in a variety of thermal-system and fluid-related problems, including: heat conduction problems; convection-dominant problems; compressible and incompressible flows; external radiation problems; internal radiation and radiative transfer; free- and moving-boundary problems; micro- and nanoscale heat transfer and fluid flow; thermal fluid flow under the influence of applied magnetic fields. Mesh generation and adaptivity, parellelization algorithms and a priori and a posteriori error analysis are also introduced and explained, rounding out a comprehensive review of the subject. Each chapter features worked examples and exercises illustrating situations ranging from simple benchmarks to practical engineering questions. This textbook is written to form the foundations of senior undergraduate and graduate learning and also provides scientists, applied mathematicians and research engineers with a thorough treatment of basic concepts, specific techniques and methods for the use of discontinuous Galerkin methods in computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer applications.

        Book Description

The advent of high-speed computers has encouraged a growing demand for newly graduated engineers to possess the basic skills of computational methods for heat and mass transfer and fluid dynamics. Computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer, as well as finite element codes, are standard tools in the computer-aided design and analysis of processes and products involving coupled transport and multi-physic phenomena. This textbook introduces the fundamentals of two important computational techniques for solving heat and mass transfer and fluid flow problems: finite difference and finite element methods.

The objective of the book is to help the students thoroughly understand the basic concepts and procedures of fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer and implement computational methodology into a computer code and solve more complex problems on their own. Theory and practice are combined in a simple and straightforward manner. Classic problems in heat transfer, mass transfer, and fluid flows are solvedand illustrated through step-by-step derivations and numerous figures. End-of-chapter problems are provided at the end of every chapter for extra practice and homework assignments.

The book is divided into three parts: Part One contains a review of basic equations of heat transfer, mass transfer and fluid dynamics; concepts of numerical approximations and errors; numerical solution techniques for systems of linear algebraic equations; and numerical integrations and quadrature formulas. (The last two topics are included primarily for students who have had no prior course on numerical analysis). Part Two introduces the finite difference/control volume method. Part Three presents the finite element method.

As an introductory text, this book is appropriate for senior undergraduate and first-year graduate level courses. Students taking independent study can use the text as a comprehensive reference guide. Others who will find it a useful resource include practicing engineers and scientists developing their own codes and using commercial codes for the analysis and design of processes and products involving heat and mass transfer and fluid dynamics.

          Book Description

Integral Transforms in Computational Heat and Fluid Flow is a comprehensive volume that emphasizes the generalized integral transform technique (G.I.T.T.) and the developments that have made the technique a powerful computational tool of practical interest. The book progressively demonstrates the approach through increasingly difficult extensions and test problems. It begins with an overview of the generalized integral transform technique in contrast with classical analytical ideas. Various applications are presented throughout the book, including transient fin analysis with time-dependent surface dissipation, laminar forced convection inside externally finned tubes, metals oxidation at high temperatures, forced convection in liquid metals, and Navier-Stokes equations.

If you work with the GITT (General Integral Transform Techinique), solving fluid mechanics and heat transfer problems on a pos-graduate level, so this is your Bible. A little confusing on the nomenclature for beginners, but it is not a big problem if you already have same experinece with the equations.

              Book Description

Describes different numerical methods for applications in three particular fields: laminar flames, turbulent flames, and spray droplet combustion. It begins with an introduction on numerical modeling and general forms of governing equations in combustion. It also introduces options of numerical techniques to solve reactive flow problems in general, and combustion problems in particular. Basic numerical strategies are discussed, and certain example problems are selected for evaluation of the numerical methods and physical aspects of combustion.
