Customer Reviews:
High quality overview of the basic ideas everyone working on wireline communication IC design should know.......2007-07-29
If you appreciate Dr. Razavi's renowned book CMOS Analog IC Design, then this book won't disappoint you since it has the same quality: brevity and clarity of explanations of what matters, clear figures and good organization. Except for a part of the PLL chapter (ch. 8) which copies from his other books, most of the book is original text which summarizes knowledge which would take much more time to gain by simply reading papers or looking at other people's design at random. Highly recommended for anyone who loves Dr. Razavi's style in his CMOS Analog IC design book and who works in the wireline communication IC design industry.
disappointed.......2005-11-20
The author doesn't have readers in his mind. I just want to use OP-AMP and photodiode to make a receiver but I can't find any example. The book should give a big picture in the beginning. Plus, the price is ridiculous.
Book Description
VLSI-Design for Non-Volatile Memories is intended for electrical engineers and graduate students who want to enter into the integrated circuit design world. Non-volatile memories are treated as an example to explain general design concepts. Practical illustrative examples of non-volatile memories, including flash types, are showcased to give insightful examples of the discussed design approaches. A collection of photos is included to make the reader familiar with silicon aspects. Throughout all parts of this book, the authors have taken a practical and applications-driven point of view, providing a comprehensive and easily understood approach to all the concepts discussed. Giovanni Campardo and Rino Micheloni have a solid track record of leading design activities at the STMicroelectronics Flash Division. David Novosel is President and founder of Intelligent Micro Design, Inc., Pittsburg, PA.

A very detailed NOR flash design guide.......2006-11-13
Make no mistake. This book is dedicated for NOR flash only. Well, I guess it is because all the authors are STM engineers. Nevertheless, it covers all the basic and if you are non-volatile memory circuit designers (eeprom/nor/nand/whatever), this book is for you.
On second thought, if you have IEEE account and want to go cheap (cheap == not paying for the book), you can get most of the good stuff from this book by downloading PROCEEDINGS OF THE IEEE, VOL 91, NO.4, APRIL 2003. I remembered there are total of 11 or 12 papers in series. Yes, the papers are from the same STM people.
Nevertheless, it is a great book. BTW, forget about the IEEE non-volatile memory book by William D. Brown. It is not a real circuit designer book but rather a poorly lumped together papers by other people.

Response to gary Kessler.......2005-09-30
This is a response to Mr. Kessler's review. First, he needs to state that he has a biased interest in his review, that he used to work with Walter at Hill & Associates before he went to work for Juniper. Second, I was the reviewer for the first edition of the book and Walter had a lot of misconceptions about SONET in the original draft. So much so that my name is menitioned in the acknoweldgements in the first edition. Since I worked as a manager dealing with SONET at both AT&T as well as Cisco Systems, the book leaves a lot to be desired. He is very verbose in his writing style and has never worked in the field to give the reader a real understanding of the issues that come with understanding SONET - both services and equipment. There are other books in the field that do a better job - Andy Reid is a good one from the technical side for example - but this author needs to change his writing style and tone it down for this book to be considered for readership seriously.
this is not your book if you want hardcore technical details.......2004-03-05
I can recommend this book to everyone who wants to get an overview on SDH/SONET capabilities and/or products but does not care for the protocol itself.
But if you're looking for a good and correct description of the inner workings of the protocol you'd better not waste your time with this book. Check out the SDH/SONET bible: Broadband Networking: ATM, SDH and SONET by Mike Sexton and Andy Reid. It's expensive, but it's really worth the money.
Goralski's book doesn't keep up with the promises of it's blurb. it has, like every book, some technical errors in it; errors which are IMHO worse enough not to buy this book. i wonder how this pointer-processing-example came into this book - horrors!
...
Good Book To Start Sonet Studies.......2003-07-21
This is very good book for beginners, and for those who wants to understand Sonet basics, but still it very general and lacks from some shallowness.
So for designers and network operators it will be not so useful since it's not detailed enough.
Don't buy e-books..........2001-10-02
The content of the book, "SONET" is rather good: it covers history, architecture, equipment, lots of technical and implementation details. However, don't buy the e-book, consider the printed version. The rating really should be 0 stars, but 0 is not allowed...
The e-book version is difficult to read, and the reader is cantankerous, lacks ALL of the advantages of a printed book, and has NO electronic advantages: it's bound to the PC it's loaded to, and cannot be moved. If your PC crashes, you're cooked. Plus, you can't return it if you find it's not the right book for you. I'll never buy another e-book!
An accurate, well-aimed work.......2001-07-02
As an author of technical books myself, I am always looking for titles that tell the story of a particular technology in a comprehensive, clearly-written and standards-oriented fashion. Walter Goralski's books do this and do it well. I own all of his titles, and the reason I like them (besides the author's sense of humor) is the fact that they are written around the standards that govern the telecommunications industry. Many companies interpret the standards and the terminology in different ways, which is fine - that's how they are designed. Unfortunately, this sometimes leads to differences of opinion about meanings or interpretations. Walter sticks to the standards, however, always ensuring the availability of a literary technological benchmark.
I strongly recommend the book.

Book Description
In semiconductor-device fabrication processes, lithography technology is used to print circuit patterns on semiconductor wafers. The remarkable miniaturization of semiconductor devices has been made possible only because of the continuous progress in lithography technology. However, for the trend of ever-increasing miniaturization to continue, a breakthrough in lithography technology is now needed. This book describes advanced techniques under development that represent the key to future semiconductor-device fabrication. To help the reader understand the background to developments in lithography technology, trends in ULSI technology and future prospects are reviewed, and the requirements that future lithography technology must meet are described. Several important lithography methods, such as deep UV lithography, x-ray lithography, electron-beam lithography, and focused ion-beam lithography are described in detail by experts in each area. Other relevant technologies, such as those that concern resist materials, metrology, and defect inspection and repair are also described.

good but may be difficult for beginners.......2005-11-05
For some derivations, I will suggest "Principles and applications of optical communications" by Max Ming-Kang Liu. It is more complete and easier to read for beginners.
Henry M. Daghighian Senior technical project leader.......2005-02-09
I found this book quite useful for training Electrical engineers in the high speed fiber optics industry. The discussion of device physics and device characteristics, their impact on device performance such as e.g.; turn-On delay ,relaxation oscillation frequency, etc. was really handy.I strongly recommend this book to all managers and senior design engineers who need to train new electrical engineers in the field of device physics.I look forward to 2nd and third edition of this book as the years go by.Good investment.
bible for photonics engineers.......2000-11-01
This book is a masterpiece. The book is a great tutor whether you are a novice or an expert in the field. Great attention has been paid to detail (which is illustrated in the fact that you will find almost no typos in the book). Many different topics such as gain calculation, reflectors, waveguides, etc. have been comprehensively treated at both a qualitative and quantitative level. This leaves the reader with not just the methodology for computing parameters for lasers using equations, but also an intuitive understanding of the physical phenomena involved in making the calculations (via the qualitative analysis). The authors provide a unique perspective to many a phenomena that have been routinely treated by other texts. This is definitely one book for the archives!!!
