2 out of 5 stars Not Recommended.......2007-04-08

The practice tests in this book were terrible! In more than one instance, the answers were incorrect according to my textbook and one of the questions had 3 answer choices that were identical! Compared to the AP questions we recieved from my teacher, the ones from the Barron's review book were quite off.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, as expected.......2006-03-16

bought this book on Amazon, saved a bunch of money, got the book in 3 days. i don't think it gets much better than that. as for the book itself, well, i always trusted barrons for most of my tests, and this is no exception.

3 out of 5 stars It's OK.......2006-01-22

This book is ok. Some of the explanations (like with electricity) are a bit confusing, and some of the information in the book is not even tested on the AP exam (like angular momentum). There are a few errors in the answer choices too, and those threw me off. When I studied it, I had no experience with physics whatsoever, and I crammed for the AP Physics B exam in a month and got a 3. But nonetheless I did learn quite a bit, and the introductory chapters that dealt with testing and learning strategies were nice to read. I also found that, as opposed to the Princeton Review's book, theres more verbal explanation of the concepts, rather than a set of problems, making it seem more like a textbook than just a problem workbook.

So to a certain extent, the cons balance the pros, making it neither good or bad. I suppose this book is good depending on your learning style. If you want explanations, this book does it. If you more practice problems, princeton does that.

2 out of 5 stars Tough. Too tough for even the writers, it seems.......2007-05-29

I'll put it out now - I ranked top 5% for the NJ science league for physics I . I've had many experiences with questions aimed at really testing your knowledge, and some of these questions do that. But some of them do it too much, to an extent where the question covers information NOT even in the information they cover in their chapter review sections. Worse, there are many glaring errors, both in their review, in their tests/questions, and their reasoning for their questions. Their questions, like i said, aim to test you, but often it only comes off as confusingly worded. Sometimes, the answer they find uses numbers different than initially stated (one question used 125m/s, but the answer worked off 100m/s.).

To be honest, the only thing going for this book is its name - barrons, without a doubt, is tough. But too tough, even for the writers of the book. If physics is not a strong subject for you, then find another book. You will most likely find it easier to follow

This is a good book a source of information for what comes in the test. But the actual test is more difficult than the practice tests in the book

4 out of 5 stars are you ready to be a professional physicists?.......2006-11-29

ok, basically i took AS physics (british system) and did pretty bad (D.) I decided to take the SAT 2 physics to show what im really made of to the universities, and this book came along. Essentially this book is difficult to comprehend, its probably useful to study it with a tutor. It has so much detail most of it does not come up in the exam, but knowing more than what is needed is better than knowing less. I got 690 which isnt entirely good i.e 800 but its acceptable. I did this without a tutor so one might succeed with a tutor and this book.

1 out of 5 stars Trivial Information Encyclopedia.......2006-05-27

This book has WAY WAY WAY WAAAAAAAAAY to much trivial information. I took advanced placement physics and I never even heard of half of this stuff. It takes a long time to sift through all of the unimportant stuff, and it is even missing some important information. Do yourself a favor, and don't buy this book.

3 out of 5 stars a decent review book.......2005-05-24

While its practice problems may not exactly represent those on the actual test, they get you acquainted with the format and the types of questions you will likely encounter. My suggestion is to use this book to study for the modern physics portion of the exam, which some regular textbooks don't cover. For mechanics and E&M, use your own resources instead, as the barron's study book cover some trivial and unimportant information that will only serve to confuse you. Certainly don't just rely on this book to study off of.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely not recommended.......2004-11-30

The convoluted explanations and completely inaccurate practice tests make this book pretty near worthless. The two weeks I spent going through it were a waste of time. Now, I'm going to buy the PR book and use that for review.

1 out of 5 stars Not a good choice.......2007-02-16

I don't know if it's the "worst ever", but it contains serious errors. Some are possibly typos, but the majority are wrong math, wrong analysis or--worst of all--wrong concept. A disaster for the beginning student.
See for example the solutions to example Free-Response Questions 2(b) and 3(b) given on page 151.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for a crash course or an extensive review.......2005-07-16

This book has everything that you would need to know from the test. It breaks down the topics into the B and C components. The free response practice tests closely resembles an easy AP test. About the multiple choice, there is no book on the market that can immitate the obscure AP test. From 2004 to present, there has been an official trend of elevating the multiple choice difficulty, while there is relatively no change in the free response.

5 out of 5 stars Makes Physics a Cakewalk.......2005-04-11

I have been studying out of this book all year so far and it is the ONLY physics book I or anyone else will ever need. It takes from physics, any of the most complicated concepts, and turns them into elementary principles, easy to remember and easy to implement. Think AP physics may be a little too hard for you? Never fear, Centorino's book is here. Buy this book, you will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Physics student.......2005-03-20

I found this book to be very reader-friendly and was of great help to me in not only the AP Physics Exam but also my college physics course.

5 out of 5 stars Very successful.......2004-05-12

The book has helped me get a 5 on the AP physics B test, it's easy to understand like most Cliff's books and I recommend it to anybody. Use this for a higher grade on the test.

They are well-known in their respective disciplines and serve on the faculties of prestigious high schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States and Canada.

ABOUT THE TEST
The SAT II: Physics Subject Test is developed by the College Board and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). The test development process involves the assistance of educators throughout the United States, and is designed and implemented to ensure that the content and difficulty level of the test are appropriate.

Although some colleges require SAT II: Subject Tests as part of their admissions process, most colleges use the scores from the SAT II: Subject Test for student placement purposes. Test scores are used as a means of determining a student's aptitude for a particular course of study.

The SAT II: Subject Test in Physics is one hour in length and consists of 75 multiple-choice questions. These questions are designed to measure your knowledge of physics and your ability to apply that knowledge. The general difficulty level of the test is designed for students who have taken a one-year introductory course in high school physics. To assist you in preparing for the exam, the College Board has provided the following list of exam topic percentages: mechanics (34-38% of exam); electricity and magnetism (22-26%); waves (15-19%); heat, kinetic theory, and thermodynamics (8-12%); modern physics (8-12%); miscellaneous (measurement, math skills, laboratory skills, history of physics, 2-4%). Concept application percentages are also provided: recall (20-33%); single-concept problem (40-53%); multiple-concept problem (20-33%).

Primarily, the test assesses your knowledge and understanding of the most significant concepts in physics and your ability to apply that knowledge. Laboratory experience will contribute to your understanding of some of the questions on the test. Since the mathematical calculations are limited to simple algebraic, trigonometric, and graphical relationships, students are not permitted to use electronic calculators or slide rules during the test. For the majority of the test, metric units are used.

For information on upcoming administrations of the exam, consult the publication Taking the SAT II: Subject Tests, which can be obtained from your guidance counselor or by contacting:

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Chock Full of ERRORS.......2004-03-07

Frankly, this book does not help the critical reader. I tried and didn't get as good an understanding as any other test prep book I've ever read, in any subject. There are numerous errors including spelling, incorrect answers and concepts. Not only that, but the drawings were poor - I wondered what kind of program they were using to make such images. The end product looks like what you might get if you had 5 days to finish it. Only buy if you get a tremendous deal.

1 out of 5 stars Full of errors.......2002-05-08

Do not buy this book! I was astounded by the number of errors. There are serious mistakes in the core subject material as well as numerous typographical errors and incorrect answers to questions. There are several cases where the "correct" letter answer does not correspond to the detailed answer provided a few pages later. The editors, if they existed, were asleep for this one.

5 out of 5 stars anon.......2000-12-09

This book is wonderful, I read through it before I took the physics test, and I scored 770 on the second try! My first one was only 660. It is great not because it gives a lot of concepts but it presents real SAT II-like questions in the practice tests. you have to use your concepts to solve them.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible, riddled with errors........1999-04-28

This book's physics presentation is at about a third grade level; it is riddled with typographical, grammatical, and physics errors. A good number of the questions in the practice test are keyed incorrectly to the answer sheet, and I spotted many completely wrong statements in the core material.

    Book Description

University of Chicago Graduate Problems in Physics covers a broad range of topics, from simple mechanics to nuclear physics. The problems presented are intriguing ones, unlike many examination questions, and physical concepts are emphasized in the solutions.

Many distinguished members of the Department of Physics and the Enrico Fermi Institute at the University of Chicago have served on the candidacy examination committees and have, therefore, contributed to the preparation of problems which have been selected for inclusion in this volume. 4 out of 5 stars A decent study aid.......2002-01-17

This book is not as useful to me as the Major American Universities Ph.D. Qualifying Questions and Solutions books, however it still provides adequate examples of problems in most of the major disciplines within the field of physics. The book is organized such that the problems are presented in the first ~half of the book, and the rest of the book is dedicated to detailed solutions. I would prefer that problems and solutions be printed together on the same page, however this setup is satisfactory.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Qual Exam Prep.......2000-04-05

This book provides excellent qualifying exam preparation. The book is a book of qual exam problems organized by subject. Solutions are provided at the end. I found it very well organized and very helpful in getting past the qualifying exams.

I first went through the "Review of Undergraduate Physics" by Hamermesh to get myself up to speed, then hit this book. It was great preparation for the real thing. I am now buying both books for my students.

    1 out of 5 stars horrible.......2003-07-30

I used this book along with Princeton Review to prepare for the test two months ago. The Princeton Review one is excellent, and this one is terrible. Though I can't say I got a 5 because of Princeton Review, this one is absolutely ridiculous. It has two chapters on problem solving, which are actually not very useful. The review chapters are extremely confusing, and a lot of the explanations, equations, and even basic concepts, are wrong. There are very few examples. The practice problems after each chapter are way harder than the real test, making them practically useless, and ridiculously many of the solutions are wrong too. Wrong concepts, explanations and solutions are all over the place. It also has a chapter on rotation and a whole 15-page chapter completely devoted to relativity, which aren't even on the B test except for torque, rotational statics, and the mass-energy relationship, which added up don't even need half a chapter. There are also appendices, some of which are totally useless for the AP test, like the infinite series for the sine function. This book is absolutely horrible, so don't get it.

2 out of 5 stars Questions accurate of AP-style, but explanations are bad.......2000-12-03

First of all, the AP exam is majorly difficult so if you haven't put any effort in your class the test is going to be a nightmare.

The Barron's book is strong in it's practice exams. I found the questions to be of the same style and difficulty as on the AP, especially the multiple choice. And for some of the easier chapters (vectors, 1-D motion, waves), the summaries aren't too bad although the information is a little muddled.

But that's all that's really good about this book. The answers for the practice questions are to difficult to explain and a lot of the time just plain-out incorrect. They might explain how to do it mathematically and show the calculations which would be completely incorrect. Or they'd write the incorrect equations. If you're a strong Physics student most of this shouldn't bother you, but there were a few questions where the method they used to solve the problem was entirely incorrect. Also when the book tries to explain the more complicated stuff, the language is just no basic and clear. And they introduce a lot of simplified versions of the common equations, obviously meant to increase speed, but mostly just confused me.

This was the only book I used to prepare for the exam so I don't know how the other prep guides are in comparison. But I wouldn't recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent review of the Physics B curriculum........2000-05-25

I find it interesting that the reviewer before me -- who gave the book one star -- wrote the review on 15 May 2000, when the AP exam was not until two days later.

Having used this book almost as my primary source for most of the fourth quarter, I have to say it does an excellent job of what it says it will -- helping a student prepare for the AP Physics B exam. From problem-solving strategies to excellent short summaries of each topic to sample exams to even a review of algebra, the book provides everything needed to succeed on the Physics B exam.

With a teacher who was out with a serious illness for most of the fourth quarter, I knew I'd need extra help if I was going to get through the AP exam. (It's one of six I took, so it's not like I haven't experienced the "fun" of these exams before). I picked up this book and found myself quite happy with it, and its review of dozens of test topics definitely helped me through both my physics class and the AP exam itself. In retrospect, I wouldn't have done as well as I did without this review guide.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book!.......2000-05-16

The biggest complaint that I have with this book is that the answers explained are horrible. They are either useless or only confuse you more. I would highly recommend you to buy the REA(Research & Education Association) Review Book if you can find it. The REA Review book had an answers explained section that is quite helpful, not only telling you why an answer is right, but why each wrong answer is wrong. I have also found the test questions to be much more difficult and confusing in this book than any review book I got and from the actual exam that I just took. I also found many blatant errors in this review book. For example numbers 44 and 60 on exam I have typos in their answer choices. The back of the book is different from the answer choice. There are many others that I found and probably many more that I did not find. I am rather sorry that I wasted my money on this book and urge you not to do so as well.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Summaries!.......2000-01-10

Wolf provides me not only all I need on the test material with clear and comprehensive, but also some valuable knowledge associated with it. This book is seven times as light as my text book, but the former is perhaps more valuable.

5 out of 5 stars Good for wrapping up........2001-04-28

The more practice tests the better(by the way there is a nice problem explanation area after each test). If you are looking for a book that helps you from the ground up, forget it. Take another physics course at school. I found this book very useful for checking up on my physics.

3 out of 5 stars Not good for people using SI units but was the best avail........2000-03-28

Although the book and the SAT II: Physics test stress on different things, "How to prepare..." is one very good book. The chapters are well developed and explained. The problems are more computational than they must be. I used that book to prepare myself but my country and many others use SI units. As you know, the Physics test also use SI units. However, I had to face constantly problems and theory concerned with English system.
