5 out of 5 stars The best book on electrodynamics.......2007-07-27

A fantastic textbook, ideal for any undergraduate, and highly recommended to a graduate student for a "grounded" reality of what one is talking about in doing problems in Jackson! One can teach oneself from this book. Griffiths is a master of understanding and showing.

This is written as a graduate physicist.

4 out of 5 stars Very good text.......2007-04-30

Yes - this is a good intro to electrodynamics, just as everyone says. It isn't a substitute for Jackson - they are in different classes, each with their own intended audiences and purposes. If you're fairly new to the subject, here's a little secret: in addition to this book, get vol 2 of The Feynman Lectures in physics! There's no equal to Richard Feynman when it comes to conveying complex abstractions in ways that even a caveman could understand (not even Geico Insurance). Later, when you're already grounded in the subject, by all means, knock yourself for a loop with Jackson.

4 out of 5 stars watch editions.......2007-04-06

Great textbook, amazingly readable, but watch out which edition you have. The so-called "Eastern Economy Edition" (paperback and marketed in Asia)is missing a few things, notably labels on some problem diagrams. If you don't have friends with the real one, be sure to avoid that.

5 out of 5 stars Don't buy J.D. Jackson!!.......2007-03-08

Unless: a) your professor makes you, b) you have bought Griffiths to actually learn something, c) all of the above. Griffiths should be a mandatory graduate text to introduce and lay foundations for more advanced concepts- it bridges the gap really well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Easy to Read.......2007-03-08

Griffiths does an excellent job presenting the material in an easy to read, conversational manner. He focuses on both the physics and the mathematics in a non-pretentious way, unlike many other books. It may not be as technically deep as, say, Jacksons book, but it gets the job done. Highly recommended.

    Book Description

Learn about the revolutionary new technology of negative-refraction metamaterials

Negative-Refraction Metamaterials: Fundamental Principles and Applications introduces artificial materials that support the unusual electromagnetic property of negative refraction. Readers will discover several classes of negative-refraction materials along with their exciting, groundbreaking applications, such as lenses and antennas, imaging with super-resolution, microwave devices, dispersion-compensating interconnects, radar, and defense.

The book begins with a chapter describing the fundamentals of isotropic metamaterials in which a negative index of refraction is defined. In the following chapters, the text builds on the fundamentals by describing a range of useful microwave devices and antennas. Next, a broad spectrum of exciting new research and emerging applications is examined, including:
    * Theory and experiments behind a super-resolving, negative-refractive-index transmission-line lens
    * 3-D transmission-line metamaterials with a negative refractive index
    * Numerical simulation studies of negative refraction of Gaussian beams and associated focusing phenomena
    * Unique advantages and theory of shaped lenses made of negative-refractive-index metamaterials
    * A new type of transmission-line metamaterial that is anisotropic and supports the formation of sharp steerable beams (resonance cones)
    * Implementations of negative-refraction metamaterials at optical frequencies
    * Unusual propagation phenomena in metallic waveguides partially filled with negative-refractive-index metamaterials
    * Metamaterials in which the refractive index and the underlying group velocity are both negative

This work brings together the best minds in this cutting-edge field. It is fascinating reading for scientists, engineers, and graduate-level students in physics, chemistry, materials science, photonics, and electrical engineering.

    5 out of 5 stars canon.......2007-06-09

If you are a physics graduate student, you probably will encounter this book at some point. Everyone tries to pidgeonhole it: space physicist want it to focus on plasma physics, string theorists want it to focus more on field theory, etc. When you take average focus of so many disparate groups of physicists, you get the book that has actually been written! Even for a such a specialize audience. Jackson is as general as possible. I commend him for it!

5 out of 5 stars Jackson is not a pedagogical text........2007-04-13

Jackson's book is the gold standard, bar none, for *reference* textbooks on E&M. That's why you will find at least one copy in the office of every physics professor and most physics grad students in the English-speaking world. It is not and was clearly never intended to be a pedagogical device, however, so pray to your deity of choice that you have an outstanding teacher to guide you through it. You can't really call yourself a physicist unless you've slogged through it in a grad E&M class, because everybody else before you did it too. Good luck!

    3 out of 5 stars A Review of "Classical Electrodynamics", Jackson, J. D. , 3rd Edition.......2007-03-14

This large book (808 pages) is an excellent text for its intended purpose, which is for classroom training of graduate-level physicists in electromagnetics. The study of magnetism and its effects is a very large one, and no single book could cover the entire field. One might perhaps divide the subject into two overlapping parts, low-frequency and high-frequency. The first covers such things as motors, actuators, solenoids (solenoidal actuators), permanent magnets, and such, where the material properties are often nonlinear and the displacement vector D of Maxwell's equations is not significant. The other, high-frequency, is the realm of this book, involving radio, microwaves, light, etc. where the displacement vector must be used and where the properties are assumed to be linear. It makes extensive use of advanced mathematics such as vector calculus, Greene's functions, spherical harmonics, Bessel functions, and the Hamiltonian. The book lightly mentions such subjects as relaxation (finite-difference), finite-element methods and eddy current effects, but discusses extensively the relationship between Einstein's theory of relativity and electromagnetics ( about a third of the book). Before buying this book, it might be best to determine that its particular emphasis fits the reader's needs.

2 out of 5 stars Classical Electrodynamics Nightmare!.......2007-03-04

This book is the hardest book I have ever encountered in my electrical engineering experience. I have to relearn the electrodynamics theory in CGS units and form the physicist perspective. Jackson is famous for his nearly impossible to solve problems as well as his abstract derivations throughout the book. At least I ended up with an A in the course after a semester's hard work.

4 out of 5 stars Second will be better.......2007-04-29

This is the textbook for my sophomore electromagnetics in the electrical engineering. I have to admit I really hated this class then. One is that there are equations here and there and it usually clouds the issue. Another reason is that the author uses the deduction method to describe this topic. It is quite different from the traditional way which goes following the historical developments.

For some reasons, I need to refresh electromagnetics in later years. I re-studied this book and then found it written pretty well this time. It is well-organized and systematic. One weak spot is the explanation for physics. I think it should be made better so that it is easier for readers to absorb the knowledge instead of confused by those mathematical equations.

This book is rather classic, which means it stays at the balance of electromagnetic statics and dynamics. Many recent electromagnetic textbooks are more focused on electromagnetic waves at the expense of the electromagnetic statics. I don't think this is a wise decision since electromagnetic statics is still very important in the real world applications, for example RF IC design.

This book is published almost 20 years ago. But don't regard it as out of date. Based on my acamedic and industrial experience, it is still the best engineering electromagnetic textbook for undergraduates.

5 out of 5 stars Seeing God (not the author, the creator of the world).......2006-12-29

You will finally understand what light is - 10 years after you take the course.

Yes, 2 years after you take the course, you get to arrange waves that can go easily back and forth from wave equations(insane vector calculus) to circuit equations(simple V=IR).

Yes, combined with clever Fourier math, you get to calculate impedance as vector reflection waves, so that you see (through Smith-Chart night vision like mental glasses) the waves invisible to human eyes (but visible to some animals) and make them oscillate/up-down-mix as an EE engineer making a living.

But James Maxwell's math is the only thing interesting in the world, which the book says that well. God made the waves and nothing more. If you want to make stories out of the context or take words out of the context (many books try and do), you give yourself trouble. Yes, we give ourselves troubles all our life. And you will see that in this book. This is life.

Everyone in this world needs to understand how a wave of light is made.

    2 out of 5 stars Ugh..........2006-05-11

This book was horrid. I was bombing the class all year with this text, until I bought REA's electromagnetics problem solver. Going into the final, I had maybe a B. By studying the REA book and working my [...] off before the final, I got that up to a final mark of A-. The physics students at my school used Griffith's electrmagnetics book, and they seemed to enjoy that book a lot more.

This book was slightly better when I took a waveguides course... imagine my disgust when I found out we were using this book, again! Even the waveguides sections were still quite weak, though, but they do keep me from rating this book a 1.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Text.......2006-04-11

While I took Electromagnetic Fields I & II courses using the first and last half of this text, I also purchased other solutions manuals and texts to survive. This was, to me, by far the most clearly written and well-presented text.
16 years after having taken the course, I'm doing a cover-to-cover review of this book and given my industry experience I appreciate the excellence of this book even more. The downside to using it is that I've found a real difficulty in locating the Solutions Manual, leaving me to use others where there's always changes in variables, ordering, and approaches which build in inefficiencies/overhead.

    Book Description

Since the publication of the second edition of "Introduction to Radar Systems," there has been continual development of new radar capabilities and continual improvements to the technology and practice of radar. This growth has necessitated the addition and updating of the following topics for the third edition: digital technology, automatic detection and tracking, doppler technology, airborne radar, and target recognition. The topic coverage is one of the great strengths of the text. In addition to a thorough revision of topics, and deletion of obsolete material, the author has added end-of-chapter problems to enhance the "teachability" of this classic book in the classroom, as well as for self-study for practicing engineers.

5 out of 5 stars Good radar book!.......2007-01-10

This is a good introductory book about radar. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn about radar.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for both, under-graduate and post-graduate students.......2005-09-21

I find this book very professional educationally, the book starts in clever, easy, baby steps to trigger the reader's mind and to attract him to the radar technology, this is in the first half of the book. the second half boosts the reader with well organized advanced radar systems. The book is excellent for communication as well as electomagnetics and antennae students, the book finds the way to balance this issue.

4 out of 5 stars A thorough but somewhat dated book.......2005-07-22

This book is one of the best introduction to Radar can be found in the market. I get the 2002 third edition. It is a good book for those who are new to the subject. However, it maybe somewhat dated and not that sufficient for those who want to do further research in particular radar area.

5 out of 5 stars Know the basics well before starting this book.......2003-01-26

I was in the USAF for 9 years and am now studying for a degree as an electronics technician. While in the service, I worked a variety of radar jammers and receivers and this volume has pieced together very well that is going on at the other end of the radar. While I learned how radars worked, I learned more how to exploit weaknesses, not the ins and outs of how exactly they were supposed to work. This book was very helpful in enhancing my knowledge of radar, and is an invaluable reference in my library.

    4 out of 5 stars A great primer.......2002-01-10

These comments are ref. to the second edition.

Simply a great primer for a new Design Engineer. Explains clearly the basic prinicipals and equations used in Radar technology. If you get to know the stuff explained in this book, you will not have any difficulty about the terms used by the Radar gurus, such as Radar Cross-Section, Radar equations, radar signal returns, received power, fluctuations in Radar Cross-section, S/N ratio of the received signals etc. Virtually everyone that works in a Radar industry would have read at least some sections in this book.

    Book Description

This accessible, new reference work shows how and why RF energy is created within a printed circuit board and the manner in which propagation occurs. With lucid explanations, this book enables engineers to grasp both the fundamentals of EMC theory and signal integrity and the mitigation process needed to prevent an EMC event. Author Montrose also shows the relationship between time and frequency domains to help you meet mandatory compliance requirements placed on printed circuit boards.

Using real-world examples the book features:

5 out of 5 stars reduce your EMI .......2006-03-06

If you are a circuit designer building a commercial product, then it is necessary to minimise the RF emissions. But many texts on circuitry gloss over the details of how to do this. Perhaps considered too uninteresting.

Montrose offers a detailed contrast. But readily accessible to anyone with an electrical engineering degree. Hence you can read tips on how to reduce the loop area on a PCB. Indeed, he suggests that you can use surface mount components, since they usually possess smaller loop area.

There are also recent innovations. Like grounding a heatsink for a microprocessor. The latest CPUs often dissipate enormous amounts of heat. But hitherto, little attention was often paid to actually grounding the requisite heatsink.

The book also devotes an entire chapter to the crucial idea of an image plane. It points out possible problems with an implementation, and how to solve these.

    3 out of 5 stars Misleading.......2002-03-28

This book is well oganized and easy to use, but the information is often incorrect. We have found it to cause more problems than solve. Paul Clayton's book come much more highly recommended.

    Book Description

This extensively revised and expanded third edition of the Artech House bestseller, Computational Electrodynamics: The Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method, offers you the most up-to-date and definitive resource on this critical method for solving Maxwell's equations. There has been considerable advancement in FDTD computational technology over the past few years, and this new edition brings you the very latest details with four new invited chapters on advanced techniques for PSTD, unconditional stability, provably stable FDTD-FETD hybrids, and hardware acceleration. Moreover, you find many completely new sections throughout the book, including major updates on convolutional PML ABCs; dispersive, nonlinear, classical-gain, and quantum-gain materials; and micro-, nano-, and bio- photonics.

This single resource provides complete guidance on FDTD techniques and applications, from basic concepts, to the current state-of-the-art. It enables you to more efficiently and effectively design and analyze key electronics and photonics technologies, including wireless communications devices, high-speed digital and microwave circuits, and integrated optics. You find sample FDTD codes written in Matlab® that serve as a self-guided refresher, and examples of how to use the FDTD method on a wide range of projects in the field. What's more, to supplement the third edition, the authors and publisher have created a Website where you can find solutions to the problems, sample FDTD PML codes, text updates/errata, and downloadable color graphics and videos. Consequently, this new edition is the ideal textbook for both a senior-year undergraduate elective course and a graduate course in computational electrodynamics.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant textbook on computational EM.......2007-02-04

This is THE STANDARD reference on FDTD methods in computational electrodynamics. Moreover, even if time-domain is not your main thing but you still work with computational EM, add this to your library. It is wonderfully written, simultaneously easy to read and deeply comprehensive. You can get your own codes going by reading this book. After applying the things you learn here you will have a renewed inspiration in Maxwell's equations and E&M.

5 out of 5 stars The book for FDTD.......2005-11-09

This book is an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable reference/tutorial. The book is suitable for use in an advanced undergraduate/first-year graduate class with a prerequisite of one semester of undergraduate E&M. (The authors' preface indicates that this prerequisite is not entirely necessary, but I don't see how you could understand what is going on without it.)

The book can also be used for self-study. In this vein, the book's website contains 1d-, 2d-, and 3d-matlab scripts that are excellent for learning how to actually implement all of this stuff. The third edition weighs in at just over 1000 pages with a price tag of $139, which is $10 cheaper than the 2nd edition was when it came out.

Allen Taflove is, perhaps, the leader in the development and use of this technique. Allen is now at Northwestern. Susan Hagness was a recent PhD student of his (1998) and is now an associate professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at the University of Wisconsin. The authors are at the forefront in the development of applications.

The third edition is significantly larger than the 2nd edition and includes several applications chapters that were cowritten with the major researchers in the field. The extraordinary explosion of application areas for FDTD is captured in the later chapters, and these chapters give students and new researchers a clear flavor of the vitality and interest in the field which extends from the detection of breast cancer to ELF pulses produced by earthquakes. It is refreshing to find authors who so readily give credit to others in their field. Taflove and Hagness have been very gracious in this regard, and as a consequence have a much better book and a very detailed and useful bibliography.

I very heartily recommend this book to anyone who wishes to use FDTD techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Agree with Prior Reviewer.......2002-09-21

I cannot quite honestly give this book (*first* edition, not second) a full five-point-zero stars because it somewhat comes apart the closer one gets to the final chapters. I read this book a few years ago, so I apologize for lack of specificity. However, I completely agree with the prior reviewer who stated that this book is better than Kunz's and Luebbers' book, which I appears to be a slightly edited compilation of previous publications --- even if that is completely untrue. In fact, in my opinion, Taflove's book (again, first edition) is a *much* better textbook than Kunz and Luebbers.

The Book News review is somewhat misleading. Taflove derives the difference equations in full, painstaking detail. (Perhaps the Book News reviewer fell asleep during that portion.) For me, this was the most valuable and educational portion of the book. Example applications have their place, but only after understanding the basic principles. Taflove did an excellent job in describing these principles, which go far beyond the basic Yee algorithm (e.g. extrapolation techniques and incorporation of BC's). Those readers familiar with other FD books should understand what I'm saying here: Anyone who reads this book and understands it will not only be conversant about FDTD but should also be able to write solid working codes. With the K&L book, this is very questionable.

    5 out of 5 stars A good overview of FD-TD method.......2000-05-25

A good intro book for the FD-TD method with many applications. The list of references at the end of each chapter is also very useful. Some of the material is now outdated and needs corrections, but otherwise a great reference for CEM. I would recommend this book over the Kunz & Luebbers FD-TD book.

    Book Description

Principles of Optics is one of the classic science books of the twentieth century, and probably the most influential book in optics published in the past forty years. This edition has been thoroughly revised and updated, with new material covering the CAT scan, interference with broad-band light and the so-called Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction theory. This edition also details scattering from inhomogeneous media and presents an account of the principles of diffraction tomography to which Emil Wolf has made a basic contribution. Several new appendices are also included. This new edition will be invaluable to advanced undergraduates, graduate students and researchers working in most areas of optics.

    4 out of 5 stars Need modernising.......2007-07-10

Yes - all classical (linear) optical concepts are in here, and yes, it's the 'bible', but it's very dated in its content, style and references, generally, and not very practical to use.

I wish Hecht - or someone like him - would re-write this classic as a more advanced version of his book.

    5 out of 5 stars The Bible.......2007-07-05

Amazing book. It's the bible of geometric optics. Have everything you might need.

Needs a little previous knowledge, but which book doesn't?

5 out of 5 stars A Classic in the Science of Optics.......2004-09-26

I read this book in the late sixties, when some of my fellow engineers built and tested an acoustic lens for a developmental company. Born & Wolf were well-acquainted with antenna aperture theory, and were among the first to write that the human eye could resolve 5X better than aperture theory would predict. This they credited to involuntary eye movements called flicks and saccades, which when combined with the brain's ability to do signal processing, was able to produce much better resolution than would have been predicted by the diameter of the retinal rods. In many ways the book gives testimony to God's wonderful gift of vision with color, depth, clarity, and order.

    5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2003-03-14

It is just a rare book on physical optics based on Maxwell equations. Rarely a book states the assumptions, the validity of the equations, the principles and how the equations arrived. Certainly, it is a great book for postgraduates and researchers in physical optics not so for undergraduate students who don't want to go through all the mathematics.

    4 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2002-12-13

This book is a classic with all problems associated. Half of the reference quoted have been written before the WWII. Very useful if you like to quote original papers. This book cover most topics of the classical optics but hardy cover modern topics.

However, it is hard to read and use a weird notation. Certainly not useful for rapid referencing. Like the bible, use it only when you have serious problem to deal with.

    Book Description

The Body Electric tells the fascinating story of our bioelectric selves. Robert O. Becker, a pioneer in the filed of regeneration and its relationship to electrical currents in living things, challenges the established mechanistic understanding of the body. He found clues to the healing process in the long-discarded theory that electricity is vital to life. But as exciting as Becker's discoveries are, pointing to the day when human limbs, spinal cords, and organs may be regenerated after they have been damaged, equally fascinating is the story of Becker's struggle to do such original work. The Body Electric explores new pathways in our understanding of evolution, acupuncture, psychic phenomena, and healing.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars The Body Electric.......2007-09-12

The information was not what I expected in regard to a misleading title. Anyone in the acupuncture field, as I am, should not be persuaded to buy this book. It basically deals with reptilian experiments done 50 or more years ago. It is a biology book, in a sense. I wish I had not purchased it!

5 out of 5 stars Ohh my... This has to be one of the most interesting books I've ever read!.......2007-08-18

Honestly, if I could give this book 10 stars, I would.

I was worried this would be some hippy-dippy, new age ride, based on some of the chapter headings. But concealed behind the facade of odd chapter headings is a truly amazing scientific work. I'm blown away. Becker & Selden go into excruciatingly beautiful detail of any number of experiments exposing some of the electrical plumbing and electrical signaling going on in complex bodies. This includes bone regeneration through electrical currents, partial or complete limb regeneration in Rats and salamanders through electrical processes. It refers to known cases of young children (under 11 y/o) regrowing fingertips that have been severed in accidents and NOT been operated on, or had skin grafts that inhibit the regenerative process. They also go into the removal of bacterial infections with positive silver electrodes approximating the body's natural healing electrical currents. (I think I now know why colloidal silver is popular as an anti-infections agent and silver nitrate {I think?} is used when babies are born to ward off infection...)

This book is written with the lay reader in mind. You don't need a medical background to understand and be enraptured by this book. As I may have said already (or not), I can't put it down. It's THAT GOOD! I hope this stuff is taught in medical school and more research goes into this field. I have the feeling it holds the key to higher level human regeneration and life extension (through making use of and maintaining the body's existing electrical systems)...

    Just... WOW!

5 out of 5 stars Ahead of his time..........2007-02-05

I'm not really one for science books, but this book has got to be the exception. If you have any chronic or 'incurable' disease, try to hold on - because fortunately there are at least a few doctors and researchers out there who are bright enough to think outside the box and challenge existing theories regarding the workings of the human body - in particular, the electricity of the human body and how it coincides with the universe.

The author walks the reader through his discoveries that not only is it feasible for the human body to regenerate (just like the salamander's), but most likely, this is what our bodies were designed to do from the get-go, until we surrounded ourselves with electromagnetic fields of pollution so powerful that our perfectly designed DNA, immune systems, cardiovascular systems, endocrine systems, neuromuscular systems became 'confused' by all the external commotion.

The author of this book represents what research 'should be' about, but for the most part isn't, and the reader cannot help but become a part of this researcher's emotion.

If I ever have a chance to meet the author of this book, I will be honored. Until then, I will recommend this book to anyone who values the perfectly amazing life God gave them and the perfectly synchronized universe He created to sustain that life. I only pray that there are more reseachers out there bravely willing to poke holes in the current theories that the human body is merely a collection of chemical reactions, unopposed by a higher force.

The author touches on this, and I am in agreement - I have to wonder if perhaps all the bad we see around us today - broken marriages, suicides, bombings, disease, pain, suffering, greed - is this merely a by-product of all the manmade electromagnetic distress surrounding each and every one of us on a daily basis? After reading this book, you will think twice about what we've sacrificed for the sake of 'technology' - everlasting life on earth.

    5 out of 5 stars Very interesting!.......2007-01-10

If you are pretty well versed in physiology and basic biology, you will probably love this book! As an engineer and experimental scientist Dr. Becker opened my eyes to a whole new area of study which, politics aside, has the potential to change almost every person's life.

5 out of 5 stars It is the best non-fiction book I have ever read.......2006-08-12

The first half the book held my attention like when I read a Clive Cussler adventure.

Dr. Becker patiently explains both biology and electricity building up to providing the understanding of regeneration as his research progressed.

The next half of the book explains first how electromagentism affects humans, then the potential hazards of electromagnetism are addressed.

Overall this book is very well written and I recommend it to all my friends whether they are engineers like me or not.
