Good source for more information.......2007-10-05
Noise and Vibration Control Engineering: Principles and Applications looks to be a good source for a second book on noise control. By second book I mean a follow up to a good introductory book on Architectural Acoustics by Egan, Long, or Mehta et al. Long's book is very thourough.
Each Chapter is written by a recognized expert in the field. It covers theory, mathematical models, and some application.
While a few of the chapters are general, and many of them relate to building noise, the subject is not limited to buildings. As an example there is coverage of jet engine noise generation and propagation. I have only read it in sections to date, and am satisfied with it.
BTW - A good source for a hands on, non-theoretical approach is from ASHRAE, "A Practical Guide to Noise and Vibration Control for HVAC Systems".
Practical Use of Noise and Vibration Control Engineering.......2001-06-29
The book has some very practical suggestions and formulas that can be used to control noise in real engineering problems. This it does by first reviewing the basic terms, definitions and international standards in acoustics. Several practical formulas for design of noise control systems are discussed and given in the text. Formulas for calculation of sound propagation in various practical situations are also given. I recommend this book to people who have an interest in reducing noise in most practical problems.
The book is also suitable to students in mechanical, aerospace, automotive, electrical, environmental, highways and building engineering who have an interest in acoustics or noise control problems. The book is however not suitable as a class textbook as not many formulas are derived neither are there many worked examples or tutorial problems that can assist a student to prepare for examinations.

Book Description
In this book, after a brief review of the more popular turbulence models, we present and discuss accurate and efficient numerical methods for solving the boundary-layer equations with turbulence models based on algebraic formulas (mixing length, eddy viscosity) or partial-differential transport equations. A computer program employing the Cebeci-Smith model and the k-e model for obtaining the solution of two-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows without separation is discussed in detail and is presented in the accompanying CD.
The numerical solution of the boundary-layer equations with flow separation is also discussed and an interactive boundary-layer method developed by the author is described in detail. A computer program for obtaining solutions on airfoils and wakes for a wide range of angles of attack, including stall, is discussed and presented in the accompanying CD. In many respects, this book can be seen as complimentary and supplementary to the author's
Analysis of Turbulent Flows.
Book Description
A thorough treatment of vibration theory and its engineering applications, from simple degree to multi degree-of-freedom system.
Focuses on the physical aspects of the mathematical concepts necessary to describe the vibration phenomena. Provides many example applications to typical problems faced by practicing engineers. Includes a chapter on computer methods, and an accompanying disk with four basic Fortran programs covering most of the calculations encountered in vibration problems.

Swiss Cheese.......2006-10-25
The topics covered are many but the depth is zero and the examples are about 90% too short. It doesn't really help to get a picture and a solution without intermediate steps or even halfhearted explanation. This book is completely inaccessible to a student and will sit useless on the shelf as $130 bucks wasted. Disgusting.
This is the worst textboook I have ever read.......2006-10-17
This is literally the most useless text book I have ever encountered (and I really thought I had read the worst). It is COMPLETELY USELESS.It doesnt explain basic concepts and examples skip mutliple steps on their way to the solution. And by multiple I mean I cant follow them at all. Please, if you are a teacher, DO NOT use this book to teach Junior Meche's. Everyone in my class thinks this book sucks!
NOT FOR A INTRO COURSE.......2006-09-06
Posibly the worst textbook i have ever encountered. Not enough examples, Limited explinations not suited for a introductory course. It's hard to imagine a publisher would have continued printing this to a 5th ed.
Hard for students and TAs.......2006-08-13
When I took this class I was utterly confused by most of the material and some of the problems made no sense whatsoever, neither the set up nor the solution. When I TA'ed the class, luckily the professor worked mainly out of a course erader made of his own notes. The bad part was he picked problems out of this book for homework. Many of the solutions are quite simple, WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM CORRECTLY, a task this book left completely up to me to explain to the students. Also, a few solutions were just plain wrong or required huge simplifications and assumptions that were not intuitive.
If you have to buy this book, buy the cheapest copy out there or just photocopy the few pages you'll need.
Also, where the h*ll do they get the nerve to charge so much for such a short useless book. It's a fifth edition that doesn't show much care or thought put into it.
This book is typical of what's wrong in the textbook publishing industry, we students are overcharged for garbage and required to buy the newest edition of content that hasn't changed in a hundred years. It's almost as if we're paying professors for plagiarizing classical theory!
I strongly recommend going elsewhere to LEARN the concepts of mechanical vibrations.
So so..........2006-01-29
The reading is alright. The chapters are short but the examples are confusing, most of the steps are cut out leaving the reader to figure out what was done. I wouldn't recommend this book if someone is really trying to learn vibrations.

Laser Experiments for Beginners
ASIN: 0830693904 |
Book Description
Lasers represent one of the most exciting technological advances of the late 20th Century. Now, science and electronics hobbyists can experience this high-tech field first hand, with 99 exciting projects. McComb provides a good mix of laser history, theory, and applications in an easy-to-read format with many illustrations. But the heart of the book is the projects, which range from simple acoustic modulation of the laser beam to super-accurate interferometers that precisely measure the speed of light. Many of the projects provide excellent ideas for student science fairs. All projects are tested by the author for safety and practicality.
Customer Reviews:
Definitely my kind of book!.......1999-12-15
Mr. McComb, if you're reading this, thank you. This book really brought me into the laser forefront. I've been doing circuit analysis/design for about 2 years now (ever since I graduated High School) and this book was my first in-depth exposure to projects dealing in lasers. Since I first read it, I have proceeded to build an exremely large laser show setup, basing some of the simpler functions off your circuits. Just want to say that this is a great platform book! A great place to start for someone in the field of electronics interested in getting into laser systems. BTW, if anyone else is interested in laser shows, gimme and e-mail.
usefull small circuits and drawings of power supp & optics.......1998-11-02
usefull small circuits and drawings of power supp of high voltage for lasers, drivers ,optics etc.. a lot of mechanical drawings and optics \lens placement for holografy, and other interesting exp, the book is more cw lasers and not at all pulser solid state , not include eny diode or new solid state power lasers. even i would not call it profesionall or advanced , i still recomand to buy and have this book .
Excellent, do-it-yourself, affordable laser projects........1998-09-25
An excellent well-written, understandable book that contains many surprisingly sophisticated projects; such as a laser seismograph, that can actually be built by the home hobbyist. This book is as useful today (1998) as when it was written. In fact the projects are now even cheaper and more practical to build! My personal favorite electronic project book. Book Description
Featuring traditional coverage as well as new research results that, until now, have been scattered throughout the professional literature, this book brings togetherin simple languagethe basic ideas and methods that have been developed to study natural and man-made signals whose frequency content changes with timee.g., speech, sonar and radar, optical images, mechanical vibrations, acoustic signals, biological/biomedical and geophysical signals. Covers time analysis, frequency analysis, and scale analysis; time-bandwidth relations; instantaneous frequency; densities and local quantities; the short time Fourier Transform; time-frequency analysis; the Wigner representation; time-frequency representations; computation methods; the synthesis problem; spatial-spatial/frequency representations; time-scale representations; operators; general joint representations; stochastic signals; and higher order time-frequency distributions. Illustrates each concept with examples and shows how the methods have been extended to other variables, such as scale. For engineers, acoustic scientists, medical scientists and developers, mathematicians, physicists, and mangers working in the fields of acoustics, sonar, radar, image processing, biomedical devices, communication.
Customer Reviews:
more for mathematician than engineer.......2001-03-29
I agree with the above reviewer - this text is more analytical than I would have liked. The organization was not very helpful for understanding the big picture - how are the different methods for time-frequency analysis related? As an engineer, most of this book was not very useful for me, although there are some nice chapters (e.g. the Wigner distribution). In addition, it is somewhat out of date (wavelets are called scale here), has some errors in the proofs, and could be updated with a new edition.
For continuous signals not for discrete signals........2000-12-27
I agree with previous reviewer that this book ignore the discrete version of time-frequency analysis area. Although the author provide complete theory of time-frequency analysis, he did not give us a concrete application algorithm. This may due to the author background, from theoretical physics, not from digital signal processing.
Great for Maths + Discussion; Weak on Implementation.......2000-08-09
This book is written clearly and well by a leading researcher in the area of time-frequency analysis. The main weakness, and the reason I've knocked off one star, is that the book deals exclusively with continuous-time representations. If you are specifically interested in discrete-time implementation of time-frequency representations, then this book may not be for you.
Great primer for Time-Frequency.......2000-03-05
I like this book... while many books on the subject, or similar Filter Banks and/or Wavelets, seem written for the expert in the field, the treatment given here is great... the author's assumption on the power of example is valid and very important to differentiate this book from others[*]. While there is little room for confusion on a math-heavy textbook, this book gives enough math and more than a sufficient level of discussion to get the subtleties across... and then follow the math! The writing style is very fluid, yet not distracting from the objective of getting the technical substance through. It reads like a book written by someone passionate about the subject.
now... a book with implementation complexity and issues would be very nice.
[*] I perused through the other books that I saw at the store... so this is not a conclusive statement about the other books.
very good reference for beginners to this area.......1999-07-02
This book gives a concise and comprehensive introduction to the main approaches to TF analysis. It is an essential reference for research work in this field... Well worth the price!

Customer Reviews:
MHD, turbulence, boundary layers..........2005-01-01
Fluid mechanics is a vast field. It can be considered a branch of applied physics. Highly mathematical, as can be seen in the problems given in this book by Hughes. He takes you through the field, giving the salient equations used to describe various fluid phenomena.
Foremost amongst these is the Navier-Stokes equation. A nonlinear partial differential equation that describes the balancing or conservation of momentum and energy in a fluid. Most of fluid mechanics builds on Navier-Stokes. So you need to get your understanding of it down pat. The problems given for these should be tackled and hopefully solved by you, before going onto later sections in the book. You need a solid grasp of this. It can make the rest much easier.
Other chapters describe various important special cases. Like incompressible flow. Or one dimensional flow of a fluid that is compressible. Then expanding this discussion into 2 dimensions.
Boundary layer problems are also heavily studied. Important in practice, because these relate to the designing of surfaces of planes or boats or missiles. Which leads naturally into problems of turbulence.
Then what if the fluid is charged? Electromagnetic effects [currents] then come into consideration. So Hughes devotes a chapter to magnetohydrodynamics. Students of nuclear fusion or stellar evolution may find this chapter germane.
Overall, Hughes gives a broad span of the field. Many problems to sharpen your understanding.
Book Description
This book presents some of the fundamentals of computational fluid dynamics for the novice. It provides a thorough yet user-friendly introduction to the governing equations and boundary conditions of viscous fluid flows, turbulence and its modelling and the finite volume method of solving flow patters on a computer.
Customer Reviews:
Very good.......2007-03-12
Very clear introduction to the finite volume method, with worked examples at the end of a topic to illustrate the points being discussed.
good to jumpstart in CFD.......2004-06-28
it is very good book in CFD for novice people.
Good Intro To Finite Volume Method Circa 1990.......2003-10-16
I titled this almost recent book(1995) in such a way because it presents methods that are somewhat outdated as compared to the publishing date.
Having said that, it is a clear introduction to the subject regarding implicit finite volume calculations. It definitely provides enough detail to cobble together a working code if one so desires and nicely covers a lot of small extras that are important in understanding the development of the method. However, it really does not advance the subject much beyond Patankar's book (1980) and it is a little distressing that it misses out on recent advances to this area of CFD. Most notably is that it presents the only solution to pressure-velocity coupling problem to be the staggered grid : well yes that method is robust, but since before 1990 people have been successfully writing robust codes using co-located grids which are really a lot more friendly to work with (especially if one is considering unstructured grids). Also more modern matrix solution methods are currently usually used than are mentioned in the book. Also it does not mention the advantages of multi-grid methods. But all of these are quibbles for a book titled, "An Introduction ..."
For the professional practioner or those looking for a more encompassing and up to date book on the topic I recommend they look at the book by Ferzinger and Peric. However that book is much more advanced in the presentation of the material and might not be suitable to some people as an introduction.
A great introduction.......2000-04-15
If your new or interested in the field of CFD this book with introduction to cfd by john d anderson should be in your personal library. Great book by a great price
A good introduction to CFD.......2000-04-12
Having first started to read Numerical Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow by Patankar and finding it a little complex, this book set out the fundamentals in a logical way. The use of examples throughout the book were a good learning tool.
A good introductory book to using CFD.
Book Description
This textbook treats the broad range of modern acoustics from the basics of wave propagation in solids and fluids to applications such as noise control and cancellation, underwater acoustics, music and music synthesis, sonoluminescence, and medical diagnostics with ultrasound.
The discussion begins with a historical overview. It then turns to a derivation of the wave equation from the fundamental equations of motion for fluids and for solids, with solutions of the equation in open air and in bounded media such as strings, bars, membranes, and pipes. Sound filters and electric analogs for sound propagation are also treated. A chapter on measurement techniques provides a comprehensive survey of the means of evaluating sound levels and frequency content of signals. A section of the physiology of hearing and psychoacoustics includes recent findings on how the human ear functions. The remainder of the book deals with a wide variety of applications including architectural acoustics; enclosures and barriers; noise codes and regulations;, and methods of noise control; underwater acoustics; ultrasound; vibration control; and music, musical instruments, and reproduction of music.
The new edition is up-to-date and forward-looking in approach. Chapter 2 now covers fluid-fluid interface effects, with additional information on newest measurement techniques. Updates are provided on the use of ultrasound in industry, and deeper coverage is provided on medical uses of ultrasound. The chapter on music and musical instruments has been broken up into two chapters, one chapter covering music and musical instruments and the other covering sound reproduction and including the latest devices such MP3
®; iPod
®; 5.1-, 6.1-, and 7.1-channel systems; and THX
® and Iosono
® theater systems. Additional coverage of the opto-acoustics and sonoluminescence phenomena is included. New problems have been added throughout.

Great material for the study of general and musical acoustics.......2007-05-07
This is an excellent general book on acoustics at the upper undergraduate to graduate level aimed at the mathematically mature. The reader should already have a knowledge of calculus, ordinary differential equations, and partial differential equations. However, unlike Kinser's book on the subject, it looks at both the forest and the trees. In most chapters the book will discuss a subject for a few paragraphs, show relevant equations, and then illustrate with a numerical example that solves a practical problem in acoustics so that the reader can join theory and practice. Chapters one through nine should probably be read in sequence, since the author is covering the basics of acoustics that is common to all disciplines. From that point forward, though, you can pick and choose what you're interested in. The later chapters have subject matter on architectural acoustics, noise and vibration control, ultrasonics, and even a short concluding chapter on nonlinear acoustics.
My personal interest was in finding a good book on acoustics that covers subject matter that is of interest to musicians but keeps the mathematics of the engineering texts on the subject while managing to not become a jungle of equations in the process. This book seems to be the one I've been looking for. Just about all of the chapters minus the ones on ultrasonics and machinery noise will be of use to students of musical acoustics, plus the longest chapter in the book focuses specifically on the physics of musical instruments and is a very good companion to "The Physics of Musical Instruments". This chapter discusses musical notation and musical instruments including strings, wind instruments, percussion instruments, and electronic instruments, as well as recording equipment, and playback audio equipment. However, this chapter is not particularly quantitative in its treatment of the subject and it also has no end of chapter exercises like most of the other chapters in the book, probably because it was written as a general textbook, not as one specifically for students of musical acoustics. I would recommend this as a good textbook for readers that want a good grounding in the basics and mathematics of general acoustics and also for those who want to learn something specifically about musical acoustics.
An excellent undergraduate textbook on acoustics.......2004-12-29
This is a good up-to-date engineering text on acoustics for upper division college students. There are plenty of good exercises at the ends of the chapters.
The author points out that acoustics has changed in the past twenty years to encompass ultrasonics and infrasonics. There are a number of new "applications in materials science, medicine, dentistry, oceanography, marine navigation, communications, petroleum and mineral prospecting, industrial processes, music and voice synthesis, animal bioacoustics, and noise control." And of course, improvements are being made in more classical parts of this field.
To use this text, you ought to have studied lower division physics for engineers, calculus, and ordinary and partial differential equations.
I like the fact that the book includes chapters on psychoacoustics, noise control, underwater acoustics, ultrasonics, and musical instruments. Not all acoustics texts cover all this! It makes this one of the more comprehensive acoustics books. Still, I would have liked to see even more material, perhaps on topics such as shock waves or second sound in liquid helium.
This is a well-written textbook. I'd be happy to teach a class using it.
