Book Description
Nonlinear Finite Elements for Continua and Structures Ted Belytschko, Wing Kam Liu, Brian Moran Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois This book provides a comprehensive description of the major methodologies of nonlinear finite element analysis for solid mechanics, as applied to continua and structures. Treatment of the subject is integrated in such a way that the reader can gain an understanding of the fundamental methods, a feeling for the comparative usefulness of different approaches and an appreciation of the difficulties inherent in nonlinear analysis. In-depth coverage of the following is given:
* Lagrangian and arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian treatments of continua
* many of the material laws used in today's software and research
* solution methods, including explicit and implicit time integration methods and methods for equilibrium problems
* basic concepts such as stability and smoothness, and techniques such as linearization and regularization
* methods for shells and structures
* contact-impact problems
* element technology, including multi-field elements
Ideal for self-study, no other book provides such a comprehensive description of nonlinear finite element analysis for solid mechanics. This is an invaluable reference not only for final year undergraduates, postgraduates, academics and engineers working on sophisticated finite element software and in the field of solid mechanics, but also for all users of nonlinear finite element programs.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the best there is.......2006-06-16
This book is simply the best nonlinear FEA book out there. While most other books stop at the Total and Updated Legrangian formulations, this book goes way beyond that and teaches you some really advanced FEA techniques. The treatment of material is thourough and meticulous. Unlike what some other reviewers have said, this book is NOT a bunch of research papers thrown together, but is very well organized with consistent notation and timely explanations. This book is ideal for self study as well as reference for scientists and engineers. However, watch out for some typos that may throw you off-track. This is the only complaint I have about the book.
A good reference, but need further revision.......2004-10-15
The approach taken by this book is neither too mathematical, which makes the subject untractable, nor too engineering-lized, which missed out important insights. I am an engineer with a master degree in mechanical engineering. I found this book very readable, given enough coffine and a good mood. The subjects covered are self-contained.
However this book needs further improvement to be called classic. First, contact-impact chapter is palely presented. LS-DYNA theory manual provides a more complete description on this subject. Secondly, typos need to be reduced. Thirdly, the language is somewhat boring. Fourthly, I would like to see a Latex-ized version of this book.
The new gold standard.......2004-06-02
This has got to be the best book out there now on how to construct nonlinear FE. For me, the book was worth it even if just for the lucent review of nonlinear continuum mechanics.
Distinguished.......2003-04-15
By systematic way of intuition, the authors successfully grasp the philosophy of nonlinear phenomena. The methods of explanation in TL, UL, and ALE are obviously pronounced. If the books of Prof. Zienkiewicz and Prof.Taylor, Prof.Bathe are treasures of FEM, this book is worth in that place.
Outstanding!.......2002-11-26
Though I had been somehow prepared by the positive comments of the other reviewers before buying this book, I must admit that I was impressed from the very beginning of study. Non linear FE is a "hard" subject, however the authors proceed in the most systematic and comprehensive way, addressing the most important aspects of non linear fem analysis in a single volume. The book contains everything you need from the field of Continuum Mechanics and is ideal for self - study. Valuable references, handy summary boxes and exercises at the end of each chapter are included.

Book Description
Finite element model updating has emerged in the 1990s as a subject of immense importance to the design, construction and maintenance of mechanical systems and civil engineering structures. This book, the first on the subject, sets out to explain the principles of model updating, not only as a research text, but also as a guide for the practising engineer who wants to get acquainted with, or use, updating techniques. It covers all aspects of model preparation and data acquisition that are necessary for updating. The various methods for parameter selection, error localisation, sensitivity and parameter estimation are described in detail and illustrated with examples. The examples can be easily replicated and expanded in order to reinforce understanding. The book is aimed at researchers, postgraduate students and practising engineers.

Introduction to the Finite Element Method
ASIN: 0849300967 |
Book Description
Expanded to include a broader range of problems than the bestselling first edition, Finite Element Method Using MATLAB: Second Edition presents finite element approximation concepts, formulation, and programming in a format that effectively streamlines the learning process. It is written from a general engineering and mathematical perspective rather than that of a solid/structural mechanics basis. What's new in the Second Edition? Each chapter in the Second Edition now includes an overview that outlines the contents and purpose of each chapter. The authors have also added a new chapter of special topics in applications, including cracks, semi-infinite and infinite domains, buckling, and thermal stress. They discuss three different linearization techniques to solve nonlinear differential equations. Also included are new sections on shell formulations and MATLAB programs. These enhancements increase the book's already significant value both as a self-study text and a reference for practicing engineers and scientists.
Customer Reviews:
Very good finite element text.......2007-09-25
In this book, the authors expose many aspects of finite element analysis, in a mostly clear and straightforward manner. The in-depth coverage of topics is appreciated, since most books only give an overview of the subject without revealing the details.
Overall, this is an excellent, detailed presentation.
A note to some reviewers: before you comment on a textbook, spend some time - maybe a few years, studying and learning the subject, and maturing as an individual. Then make your comments.
Difficult to understand.......2005-02-06
I took Prof Kwon's class and used this book. It was very difficult to understand. Bathe's book is much more clear.
There has to be a better book to learn FE........2003-06-29
Professor Young Kwon teaches at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. I used this book in his class and found little difference when I compared it to the first edition. The first edition has some minor errors, but the problem sets for each chapter along with the Matlab programs provided are very much the same. The first chapter has some basic Matlab necessities and the second chapter covers weighted residual methods (strong / weak formulation, least squares, collocation, and Galerkin). There is a one paragraph summary of the Raleigh-Ritz method (derived from Calculus of Variations), which is more accurate but not as popular as Galerkin. I found a much better explanation of these weighted residual methods in an undergraduate numerical analysis book. The remainder of the book covered shape functions, isoparametric functions, numerical integration techniques, boundary and initial value problems, eigenvalue problems, beams, shell and plates, and trusses.
Caution:
- If you are planning to use this book as a reference or to educate yourself. STOP! This is a boring and merciless graduate-level book. At times we (study groups) would spend anywhere from half an hour to an hour trying to decipher the sample problems. Don't waste your time looking for the solutions manual; it is harder to follow than the sample problems.
- If you want to learn the core of FE and can program easily, this book would help -- but it won't be easy.
- If you want to learn FE for practical applications, spend your energy using a commercial or open-source FE package.
More general comments:
- If asked to describe this book, I would reply with "grueling".
- The Matlab code is far from being easy to understand. Maybe it's easy to follow the logic, but there is very little documentation to support the code. You will spend A LOT of time figuring out the variables alone, which has a lot to do with how well you understand the code.
- Someone with a non-engineer background would NOT be able to understand this book. Someone with a technical background and a strong math foundation may be able to. For example, this book contains a few topics from Theory of Elasticity. This theory is taught in advanced solid mechanics classes -- not even the undergraduate Mech-E's cover it. You should also have a good handle on matrix algebra, integral calculus, and basic ODE's.
Bottom Line:
I did not like how this book presents the FE Method. If you really need it...good luck!
understanding the finite element method.......2000-08-26
This book carries on from the first edition, lots of new theories and programs have been added. The errors in the last edition(1996) have been corrected. This book is a must for people who want to understand the finite element method and for people who want to learn how to program it using 'Matlab'. Matlab is one of the most widely used programming tool.
I have the old edition but i find this new edition refreshing. The new theories and programs help in digesting the book better.
overall this is an indispensable book for people trying to learn to program the finite element method because it gives a clear understanding of how a finite element code works.
thanks,
kartik srinivas
Excellent finite element text.......1999-11-26
This book is extremely useful, especially for those new to the finite element methods. Despite the fact that it puts a lot of emphasis on matlab, the code is easy to understand and translate into other powerful languages like fortran 90. It took me a few days to start writting my own FEM code after buying the book. I would strongly recommend it even for those with a non-engineering background.

Customer Reviews:
A good introductory book for FEM programming.......2004-05-21
I must say I agree with the views of `A reader from Seattle', and moreover, I must point out that in such a book one most definitely expects discussion of the optimum way to program the object oriented FEM using Fortran 9x. Instead, the authors only claim that introduction of OO concepts to FEM coding using Fortran 9x is a `matter of taste', which is unlikely to be true, since there are so many publications that emphasize the virtues of such an approach. Considering the fact that Fortran 9x is not fully OO for a number of reasons and thus obviously the C++ versions of FEM codes cannot be directly converted to Fortran 9x, this would have been a most welcome contribution. I have learned that a new edition of the book is due this summer, and I hope that they address this point as well in that edition.
Definitively a workhorse for those involved in FEA........2003-10-14
If you are interested in programming FEA, THIS is the book you have to buy, without any esitation. Non doubt about it. It will teach you how to code FE solvers (I should have bought it two years ago...), how to set up the element stiffenss matrices and so on.
Actually it is oriented toward FORTRAN90. Well, 90% engineering software are written in FORTRAN, anyway it is a minor problem: one can still easily figure out the algorithm from the FORTRAN code. Once you know the algorithm, coding in ANY language you know is easy...I've been programming FORTRAN 90 FEM codes for two years, and I think this book is a must, even as a desktop reference. SOmetimes the codes presented in this book seem to be a mere upgrade from F77 to F90.
A Very Best Book for FE begineers.......2002-06-24
I believe the 3rd Ed has definitely enhance the purpose of this
celebrate Prog the FEM book by Smith & Griffiths. Up to date, besides the books by Owen & Hinton, this is one of the very best book for begineers in FEM in the "sea" of finite element textbook. In fact, the most powerful about this book is the programs that came with it. Buy it and you'll not regret it.
best book on programming FEM available in the literature.......2001-10-09
This book assumes that the reader already knows the
theory behind the finite element method.
The explanations of the code are limited, but with careful
study, the code is powerfull,
concise and portable. This is by far
the best book available in the open literature for
programming the finite element method. The reader with
background in FEM theory, will find this book extremely
useful, and the code very readable.
Most modern FEM programming book available........2001-07-01
This book does a good job showing how to take advantage of modern Fortran90 to program the finite element method with both direct and iterative equation solvers. In fact, this is the only book available to do so. All other finite element books have code which is somewhat outdated in that they use Fortran77 and only cover direct equation solvers, and do not cover iterative solvers.
The book does a good job with showing "element-by-element" iterative solvers developed by researchers in the 1980's. Unfortunately, the book does not cover the more recent iterative methods such as methods which utilize compressed storage formats and domain decomposition methods.
The most disappointing aspect of the book is that the contents claim that parallel computing methods are included. In fact, there is only a very short chapter outlining parallel methods for the element-by-element iterative solution method. Some results are presented of the authors
research but no details are given at all. The authors appear to be novice parallel programming users who are currently learning to write parallel programs for finite elements at the time of the publication. The book would have been much more valuable if parallel programming aspects were included, this would have truly set the book apart from other finite element books. I suspect that the authors will publish a fourth edition of their book after they have learned how to program the finite element method for parallel computers.

This is a basis book for Finite Element Analysis. Also buy a book in Amazon is a fantastic guarantee of service.
Worst Book Ever!!!.......2007-05-03
We are at chapter 13 now and I now know that the book do not provide good fundamentals nor details to understand what FEA is all about. Tutorials are useless because they do not explain anything what's going on. You just must figure it out yourself. This is OK for secondary book. But don't expect to understand it without any other help. Choppy steps for the solution in the examples!
I love this book!.......2006-07-06
I can't imagine my learning process of FEA without this book. It's really good and comprenhensive. It is nice to read and it provides clear explanations to difficult topics. I believe this is a must have!
Fantastic intro to FEA.......2005-09-08
This book provides a great intro to FEA in general befor eit actually starts ANSYS Tutorial. The book is strictly for beginners .It contains very less details on Batch files ,nonlinear problems etc.
Good intro, but does not go far enough.......2000-08-09
I bought this book hoping it would make my job of developing a finite element model using ANSYS easier. But I did not learn much of anything new from this book. I was already familiar with finite element theory and also took the intro to ansys course offered by ANSYS. I had hoped that this book would go beyond what was offered by these two sources, but sadly it does not. Still, for the beginner who knows next to nothing of f.e. methods and ANSYS this is probably helpful.

Book Description
This text presents an introduction to the finite element method including theory, coding, and applications. The theory is presented without recourse to any specific discipline, and the applications span a broad range of engineering problems. The codes are written in MATLAB script in such a way that they are easily translated to other computer languages such as FORTRAN. All codes given in the text are available for downloading from the text's Web page, along with data files for running the test problems shown in the text. All codes can be run on the student version of MATLAB (not included).

Book Description
This book is an essential tool written to be used as the primary text for an undergraduate or early postgraduate course as well as a reference book for engineers and scientists who want to quickly develop finite-element programs. Regarding the formulation of the finite element method, the book emphasizes the essential unity of all processes of approximation used in the solution of differential equations such as finite differences, finite elements and boundary elements. Computational aspects are presented in Maple. Three Maple packages were specially developed for this book and are included in a companion CD-ROM.
Book Description
The book is suitable for readers with a background in basic finite element and finite difference methods for partial differential equations who wants gentle introductions to advanced topics like parallel computing, multigrid methods, and special methods for systems of PDEs. The goal of all chapters is to *compute* solutions to problems, hence algorithmic and software issues play a central role. All software examples use the Diffpack programming environment, so to take advantage of these examples some experience with Diffpack is required. There are also some chapters covering complete applications, i.e., the way from a model, expressed as systems of PDEs, through discretization methods, algorithms, software design, verification, and computational examples.
