      Book Description

Silicon, the basic material for a multibillion-dollar industry, is the most widely researched and applied semiconductor, and its surfaces are the most thoroughly studied of all semiconductor surfaces. Silicon Surfaces and Formation of Interfaces may be used as an introduction to graduate-level physics and chemical physics. Moreover, it gives a specialized and comprehensive description of the most common faces of silicon crystals as well as their interaction with adsorbates and overlayers. This knowledge is presented in a systematic and easy-to-follow way. Discussion of each system is preceded by a brief overview which categorizes the features and physical mechanisms before the details are presented. The literature is easily available, and the references are numerous and organized in tables, allowing a search without the need to browse through the text.

Though this volume focuses on a scientific understanding of physics on the atomistic and mesoscopic levels, it also highlights existing and potential links between basic research in surface science and applications in the silicon industry. It will be valuable to anyone writing a paper, thesis, or proposal in the field of silicon surfaces.

          Book Description

Spontaneous pattern formation in nonlinear dissipative systems far from equilibrium is a paradigmatic case of emergent behaviour associated with complex systems. It is encountered in a great variety of settings, both in nature and technology, and has numerous applications ranging from nonlinear optics through solid and fluid mechanics, physical chemistry and chemical engineering to biology. Nature creates its variety of forms through spontaneous pattern formation and self-assembly, and this strategy is likely to be imitated by future biomorphic technologies. This book is a first-hand account by one of the leading players in this field, which gives in-depth descriptions of analytical methods elucidating the complex evolution of nonlinear dissipative systems, and brings the reader to the forefront of current research. The introductory chapter on the theory of dynamical systems is written with a view to applications of its powerful methods to spatial and spatio-temporal patterns. It is followed by two chapters treating moving interfaces, based largely on reaction-diffusion and phase-separating systems. The following two chapters on amplitude equations for patterns and waves describe universal phenomena generated by representative equations which can be derived for a variety of non-equilibrium systems originating in fluid mechanics, physical chemistry or nonlinear optics. This book addresses graduate students and non-specialists from the many related areas of applied mathematics, physical chemistry, chemical engineering and biology, as well as the seasoned scientist in search of a modern source of reference.

                Book Description

Interfacial phenomena driven by heat or mass transfer are widespread in science and various branches of engineering. Research in this area has become quite active in recent years, attributable in part, at least, to the entry of physicists and their sophisticated experimental techniques into the field. Until now, however, the field has lacked a readable account of the recent developments. Interfacial Phenomena and Convection remedies this problem by furnishing a self-contained monograph that examines a rich variety of phenomena in which interfaces pay a crucial role. From a unified perspective that embraces physical chemistry, fluid mechanics, and applied mathematics, the authors study recent developments related to the Marangoni effect, including patterned convection and instabilities, oscillatory/wavy phenomena, and turbulent phenomena. They examine Bénard layers subjected to transverse and longitudinal thermal gradients and phenomena involving surface tension gradients as the driving forces, including falling films, drops, and liquid bridges. It is only in the past two or three decades that researchers have performed suitable, clear-cut experiments involving interfacial phenomena, and the stage is now set for a virtual explosion of the field. Interfacial Phenomena and Convection will bring you quickly up to date on the advances realized and prepare you to both use the results and to make further advances.

                  Book Description

One of the few textbooks in the field, this volume deals with several aspects of the dynamics of colloids. A self-contained treatise, it fills the gap between research literature and existing books for graduate students and researchers. For readers with a background in chemistry, the first chapter contains a section on frequently used mathematical techniques, as well as statistical mechanics.

Some of the topics covered include:

                  • diffusion of free particles on the basis of the Langevin equation

                  •the separation of time, length and angular scales;

                  • the fundamental Fokker-Planck and Smoluchowski equations derived for interacting particles

                  • friction of spheres and rods, and hydrodynamic interaction of spheres (including three body interactions)

                  • diffusion, sedimentation, critical phenomena and phase separation kinetics

                  • experimental light scattering results.

For universities and research departments in industry this textbook makes vital reading.

This handbook brings together, under a single cover, all aspects of the chemistry, physics, and engineering of surfaces and interfaces of materials currently studied in academic and industrial research. It covers different experimental and theoretical aspects of surfaces and interfaces, their physical properties, and spectroscopic techniques that have been applied to a wide class of inorganic, organic, polymer, and biological materials.
The diversified technological areas of surface science reflect the explosion of scientific information on surfaces and interfaces of materials and their spectroscopic characterization. The large volume of experimental data on chemistry, physics, and engineering aspects of materials surfaces and interfaces remains scattered in so many different periodicals, therefore this handbook compilation is needed.
The information presented in this multivolume reference draws on two decades of pioneering research on the surfaces and interfaces of materials to offer a complete perspective on the topic. These five volumes-Surface and Interface Phenomena; Surface Characterization and Properties; Nanostructures, Micelles, and Colloids; Thin Films and Layers; Biointerfaces and Applications-provide multidisciplinary review chapters and summarize the current status of the field covering important scientific and technological developments made over past decades in surfaces and interfaces of materials and spectroscopic techniques with contributions from internationally recognized experts from all over the world. Fully cross-referenced, this book has clear, precise, and wide appeal as an essential reference source long due for the scientific community.

                  4 out of 5 stars A lot happens on a surface.......2004-06-19

This massive set summarises a multitude of phenomena that can occur at (mostly) solid surfaces. While many textbooks on condensed matter have good theoretical treatments of solids, that is due in part to assuming that the solids are of infinite extent, and avoiding any "messy" boundary conditions, like surfaces. But surfaces are where chemical reactions and physical processes mostly happen.

The authors seek to redress this imbalance by giving us a huge sweep of what can happen at surfaces. Spanning chemistry, physics and engineering. For the latter, issues arise, like tribology (friction), and how the presence of microscopic things like dangling bonds at a surface can affect the frictional coefficients on a macroscopic scale.

There is a good treatment of spectroscopy; invaluable for analysing exactly what we have on a surface. Plus of course the use of an Atomic Force Microscope.

Some of you may be attracted to the hot subject of nanostructures, and how these might be fabricated on surfaces.

                    Book Description

Surface Analytical Techniques for Probing Biomaterial Processes describes four surface analytical techniques for probing dynamic, in situ processes at the biomaterial interface. The book presents the theoretical basis and biomaterial applications of: o Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Spectroscopy (TIRFS) o Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) o Ellipsometry o Dynamic Contact Angle (DCA) analysis This book is not a review, but a practical description of the techniques to enable the biomaterialist to assess and intelligently use any one of the methods described. It deliberately avoids addressing expensive or non-dynamic tests, and concentrates instead on the growing field of biomaterials. Theory is presented in a simple and readable manner, experimental procedures are described, and the type of information obtained is discussed. It is written not just for the avid or interested reader but also, and perhaps more important, for the end user.
