Book Description
Controlled fusion research explores the properties of man-made plasmas confined in toroidal machines (tokamaks) by intense magnetic fields. Beginning with the elementary principles, the author gives a rigorous and complete demonstration of the theory of magnetoplasmas. He then builds on this
base to present a new theory of magnetoplasmas which accounts for many previously inexplicable phenomena of tokamak behavior. He explains the reasons for unexpectedly large heat losses, and raises fundamental questions about whether fusion power will ever be economically viable. Chapters are
followed by exercises and notes on the mathematics. This book is be an excellent base for a graduate course on plasma physics, and will interest researchers in both applied and plasma physics.
Book Description
This classic book, now reissued in paperback, presents a detailed account of the mathematical theory of viscosity, thermal conduction and diffusion in non-uniform gases based on the solution of the Maxwell -- Boltzmann equations. The theory of Chapman and Enskog, describing work on dense gases, quantum theory of collisions and the theory of conduction and diffusion in ionized gases in the presence of electric and magnetic fields, is extended in the later chapters.
The third edition was first published in 1970 and included revisions to take account of extensions of the theory to fresh molecular models and of new methods used in discussing dense gases and plasmas. This reissue will therefore be of value to mathematicians, theoretical physicists and chemical engineers interested in gas-theory and its applications.
Cambridge Mathematical Library
Cambridge University Press has a long and honourable history of publishing in mathematics and counts many classics of the mathematical literature within its list. Some of these titles have been out of print for many years now and yet the methods which they espouse are still of considerable relevance today.
The Cambridge Mathematical Library will provide an inexpensive edition of these titles in a durable paperback format and at a price which will make the books attractive to individuals wishing to add them to their personal libraries. It is intended that certain volumes in the series will have forewords, written by leading experts in the subject, which will place the title in its historical and mathematical context.

Presents the classical statistical mechanics approach to gas.......1998-09-11
The book deals with the classical statistical machanics approach of describing gases; it shows how properties as pressure, viscosity and heat flux can be derived. It shows this for dense and dilute gases, and for gas-mixtures.

An Introduction to the Theory of the Boltzmann Equation (Dover Books on Physics)
ASIN: 0198503989 |
Book Description
In recent years, stylized forms of the Boltzmann equation, now going by the name of "Lattice Boltzmann equation" (LBE), have emerged, which relinquish most mathematical complexities of the true Boltzmann equation without sacrificing physical fidelity in the description of many situations involving complex fluid motion. This book provides the first detailed survey of LBE theory and its major applications to date. Accessible to a broad audience of scientists dealing with complex system dynamics, the book also portrays future developments in allied areas of science (material science, biology etc.) where fluid motion plays a distinguished role.

A wide and good review but only for specialists.......2003-11-24
The LBM methods are widely reviewed in all their relevant aspects.
The only lacking of this book is the poor description of the mathematical/physical background needed by non-specialists for a complete undertanding of the book's topics (e.g. the link between statistical mechanics and fluid dynamics).

Book Description
Until recently the formal statistical mechanical approach offered no practicable method for computing the transport coefficients of liquids, and so most practitioners had to resort to empirical fitting formulas. This has now changed, as demonstrated in this innovative monograph. The author presents and applies new methods based on statistical mechanics for calculating the transport coefficients of simple and complex liquids over wide ranges of density and temperature. These molecular theories enable the transport coefficients to be calculated in terms of equilibrium thermodynamic properties, and the results are shown to account satisfactorily for experimental observations, including even the non-Newtonian behavior of fluids far from equilibrium.

Rarefied Gas Dynamics: From Basic Concepts to Actual Calculations (Cambridge Texts in Applied Mathematics)
ASIN: 0817642846 |
Book Description
This monograph gives a comprehensive description of the relationship and connections between kinetic theory and fluid dynamics, mainly for a time-independent problem in a general domain. Ambiguities in this relationship are clarified, and the incompleteness of classical fluid dynamics in describing the behavior of a gas in the continuum limit—recently reported as the ghost effect—is also discussed. The approach used in this work engages an audience of theoretical physicists, applied mathematicians, and engineers. By a systematic asymptotic analysis, fluid-dynamic-type equations and their associated boundary conditions that take into account the weak effect of gas rarefaction are derived from the Boltzmann system. Comprehensive information on the Knudsen-layer correction is also obtained. Equations and their boundary conditions are carefully classified depending on the physical context of problems. Applications are presented to various physically interesting phenomena, including flows induced by temperature fields, evaporation and condensation problems, examples of the ghost effect, and bifurcation of flows. Key features: * many applications and physical models of practical interest * experimental works such as the Knudsen compressor are examined to supplement theory * engineers will not be overwhelmed by sophisticated mathematical techniques * mathematicians will benefit from clarity of definitions and precise physical descriptions given in mathematical terms * appendices collect key derivations and formulas, important to the practitioner, but not easily found in the literature Kinetic Theory and Fluid Dynamics serves as a bridge for those working in different communities where kinetic theory or fluid dynamics is important: graduate students, researchers and practitioners in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, and various branches of engineering. The work can be used in graduate-level courses in fluid dynamics, gas dynamics, and kinetic theory; some parts of the text can be used in advanced undergraduate courses.

Book Description
The Kinetic Theory of Gases has applications in many areas of science and technology as well as in our understandings of many natural processes and phenomena from the nano-scale up to the cosmic-scale. Some of the fields and topics affected include manufacturing, health care, weather, defence, pollution, aerospace science and engineering, and others. In particular, the interactions of rarefied gases with surfaces are of great interest because such interactions can have pronounced effects on the behaviour exhibited by those systems in all of the above fields. Such fundamental things as the transfer of mass, momentum, and energy between the components of a system can be significantly altered by such interactions. Collectively this transfer is typically described in terms of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Transport Theory which generally go hand-in-hand with the Kinetic Theory of Gases. When this transport involves small particles suspended in a gas such as air, it is typically termed Aerosol Mechanics. Thus, this book should prove to be a very useful tool in virtually all application areas involving the Kinetic Theory of Gases, Rarefied Gas Dynamics, Transport Theory, and Aerosol Mechanics. This book is designed to serve a dual function. It is intended that it be capable of serving as a teaching instrument, either in a classroom environment or independently, for the study of basic analytical methods and mathematical techniques that may be used in the Kinetic Theory of Gases and is primarily suitable for use in graduate level physics and engineering courses on the subject. This book should also prove to be useful as a reference for scientists and engineers working in the fields of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Aerosol Mechanics. In addition, the material in this book may prove to be of interest to individuals working in such areas as Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or any other applied discipline in which gas-surface interactions can be expected to play a significant role.

Book Description
Over the last few years it has become apparent that fluid turbulence shares many common features with plasma turbulence, such as coherent structures and self-organization phenomena, passive scalar transport and anomalous diffusion. This book gathers very high level, current papers on these subjects. It is intended for scientists and researchers, lecturers and graduate students because of the review style of the papers.

Book Description
Collective Modes in Inhomogeneous Plasmas: Kinetic and Advanced Fluid Theory presents the collective drift and MHD-type modes in inhomogeneous plasmas from the point of view of two-fluid and kinetic theory. Written by an internationally respected plasma transport theoretician, this introductory monograph emphasizes the description of the plasma rather than the geometry to present a more general approach to a large class of plasma problems. Starting with generalized fluid equations for low frequency phenomena, the author shows how drift waves and MHD-type modes can arise from the effects of inhomogeneities in the plasma. The kinetic description is then presented to reveal a host of phenomena ranging from vortex modes and finite Larmor radius effects to trapped and fast particle instabilities, transport, diffusion, and other advanced fluid effects. Theoretical and computational plasma physicists modeling confined plasmas will find this illustrated book a very valuable addition to their collection.

Customer Reviews:
Indispensable reference.......2003-08-22
This is a good starting point for the reader interested in rheology or polymer dynamics. Many definitions and concepts widely used in the field of rheology of complex fluids can be found in this work. One of the introductory chapters is dedicated to qualitatively explain the most counter intuitive phenomena found in polymeric liquids. The rest of the book is primarily devoted to describe a variety of models, frequently illustrated with experimental data. The models are provided in a self-contained fashion, facilitating their use nad understanding.
Vol. I is a detailed introduction to rheology, with plenty of exercises. Explains in a clear way a variety of concepts such as material functions, and many classical models. Contains useful tables and appendices.
Vol. II also has good appendices and tables. It goes in detail through several microscopic models of polymers, starting from the simplest ones. Chapters are of increasing difficulty, getting more and more technical through the book, a good idea is to work the problems and exercises in detail. After this process is likely that the reader will be able to understand many polymer rheology papers.
