Good books about Physics. Not to difficult to understand, but not that easy either (It's PHYSICS!!!)
Too pretty - not enough meat.......2005-11-01
I doubt many who have written reviews here are actual college students. Physics is probably one of the most challenging courses one can take. Nevertheless, it can also be an exciting field of study - this book doesn't do it justice though. It has the potential of scaring off newcomers.
While the book's overall visual presentation is nicely done, the theory behind various mathematical laws is poor. Often, it takes two or three paragraphs of rambling before getting to the point on a topic.
Each chapter has its own set of word problems to solve. While some of the problems are generally a piece of cake, most contain subtleties and assume you know far too much prior knowledge outside the book. It would be a nightmare solving these problems without the answer/studyguide book handy. That guide is almost as large as the textbook and sells for almost $70 alone. Even with the studyguide, some of the demonstrations are illogical and don't necessarily reflect the material you learnt in the current or previous chapters. I've even seen plenty of cases where the math contradicts what the material in the chapter stated!
Although the book says it is a calculus-based text, there really isn't a whole lot of it in there. This might be a blessing to some but isn't always practical in the real world. My Calculus textbook covered physics problems better than this textbook! The authors tend to brush basic differentiation/integration in the theory portions but they're never really used in actual problems.
The PhysicsNow online study tool has some neat diagrams and interactive problems but is still generally useless. Good luck getting your account activated when registering online! I had to call customer service several times before I could actually login to the site.
I could conclude in saying that this book does make a great reference book to people who already have knowledge in physics. However, I'm sure there are better textbooks out there that can teach you the basics if you're new to the field. Many fellow students in my physics classes have shared the same grunts about the book as much as I have and agree that this book can make physics frustrating to the newbie.

The author jumps around a lot, and doesn't show enough thoery before giving u formulas. Some explanations are too wordy.. some are not wordy enough...

A remarkable first step in changing physics pedagogy.......2002-07-17
Serway and Jewett have made a remarkable first step in changing physics pedagogy for the better:
1) They cover all topics of physics (including modern physics) in 31 chapters, more easily coverable in 2 semesters. To accomplish this, they removed some utlitarian aspects found in more traditional texts. I think Einstein would have liked this. Some utilitarian aspects are best left for (and in fact better covered by) engineering courses anyway.
2) They combined Newtonian relativity and special relativity into a single chapter and moved it to chapter 9, to be covered in first semester.
3) They introduce ALL fundamental forces in chapter 5 and apply a global approach to energy conservation in chapter 6. This allows them to implement a recommendation by the American Physical Society to present the first law of thermo as delta E = Q + W. Finally! Thermodynamics convention is in line with classical mechanics convention.
True, many staunch physics professors may not like the "prettiness" of the book, but I think this is a "walked ten miles to school in the snow" response. The following features make calc-based general physics more learnable for the first year college student:
1) Context overlay: the book is divided into 8 context sections that are associated with current challenges in our society. Chapters 2 through 11 are placed within the context of a mission to mars. This layout does not force the instructor to follow the context, but provides the student with things to think about while studying the material.
2) Pitfall prevention: marginal notes that tell the student what NOT to think or do with a concept or equation.
3) Modeling explained: THIS IS A BIG DEAL. In chapter 1, the authors explain how physicists use models to represent reality. They then reveal throughout the text the models that are used in the development of subject matter. This helps the student to actually learn about the philosophy of physics, and not just how to solve problems. But make no mistake. This approach actually helps the student learn how to solve problems. This is very important to the physics major, but also helps the engineering major understand the origin of the fundamental equations they use.
4) Mathematical level: Calculus is introduced gradually, since most students are taking first year calculus and physics concurrently. Most steps are shown when basic equations are developed, and references are made to mathematical appendices at the back of the text. Vector and scalar addition is introduced in chapter 1 to support kinematics in chapters 2 and 3, but the dot product is introduced in chapter 6 with work and energy and the cross product is introduced in chapter 10 with rotational dynamics.
There is more that can be done to improve the state of our general physics textbooks, but this is a great start. So I rated them "5 stars."

I an in engineer working in a different industry and was interested in learning more about fuel cells. Since the authors do not provide answers to the chapter questions or problems, I would not recommend this book to someone trying to get an in-depth understanding. Better to find a lighter, broader read.

The book is an interesting one as introduces the fundamentals of fuel cell theory. I do recommend the book for those who are initiating their studies in this subject. The book is well written and organized.

This is a very complete and thorough book, and covers all of the theory as well as the technology of fuel cells. It is very well organized and structured and is highly suitable for first time students as well as an excellent reference book for the experienced reader. I highly recommend this book to virtually anyone who is interested in fuel cell technology.

This book is an excellent introduction to fuel cells for the novice as well as a valuable reference for someone with more experience. It does not assume prior knowledge on the one hand, yet provides enough depth to be of interest for people already in the fuel cell field. When I first became interested in fuel cells, I did a survey of all the books available and this one best suited my needs by far. It is very readable and the explanations provide both quantitative scientific rigor as well as supporting, intuitive reasoning. I highly recommend this book - when you finish reading it you will have a solid foundation in fuel cell science and technology.

This book does a fabulous job of providing a clear, interesting overview of fuel cells. Without assuming any previous knowledge, the book introduces the reader to the necessary fuel cell science, including thermodynamics, charge and mass transport, and reaction kinetics. The book also introduces the five types of fuel cells (PEMFC, PAFC, AFC, MCFC, SOFC) and gives the reader a good understanding of the characteristics, advantages and disadvtanges to each one, allowing for easy comparison. As a student, this textbook seemlessly guided me through the fuel cells class and left me with a strong, deeper understanding of fuel cells (and an ability to intelligently discuss them!). I still reference my textbook frequently and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about fuel cells.

After a 7 year wait, the 7th Edition of Gradshteyn & Ryzhik has finally been released! Other reviews speak to the tremendous utility of this classic. It is worth noting that the latest edition now INCLUDES a fully-searchable CD-ROM version of the book. However, I did notice a bug when using this on Windows XP SP2 with FireFox 2.0.0.2. (The CD-ROM is optimized for the Netscape browser and CANNOT be used with Internet Explorer.) Although I am able to click on the "Contents" button and navigate through the sections; and although I am able to go back to the title page by clicking on "Home"; when I click on the "Book Contents" button in the middle, FireFox freezes on me and I have to terminate the browser process.
Comments on an earlier edition.......2007-01-30
My copy of this book is the 4th edition, 1965. I still vividly
remember going to a bookstore in Berkeley, CA in 1971 and buying this
book for $10 (I also bought the "Feynman Lectures in Physics" on this
trip for $7.45 per volume). I also remember eating lunch at an
outdoor restaurant in Berkeley and having a fantastic view of the San
Francisco Bay Area, as it was an absolutely clear day. As a piece of
useless trivia, I had a liverwurst sandwich on a dark pumpernickel;
this is the first time I ever had liverwurst and fell in love with it!
This book is compendium of mostly integrals. What made it stand out
back then was its organization, making it relatively easy to look
up a particular integral. Most of the formulas come with a reference
to where the formula came from, should one desire to research things
a bit more. While it's not a panacea for dealing with all integrals,
you're likely to find something in here to aid in attacking most
problems.
Before using any of these integrals in an important problem, I'd
recommend you verify the formula first. Fortunately, this isn't
hard to do numerically with modern scripting languages like python,
accompanied by something like scipy, or a computer algebra system
such as Mathematica or Maple.

Let's keep this short and sweet. The book is probably THE best in what it claims to be, i.e. a compendium of mainly integrals, but all sorts of interesting stuff also manages to find its way in. Why some former reviewers exhaust their artillery in complaining about the CD is beyond me. This is a reference BOOK an as such unsurpassed. Buy it for sheer pleasure if for nothing else. While you're at it, you might want to take a look at Handbook of Mathematics by I. N. Bronshtein et al. which I ordered from Amazon in Germany a moment ago. That one also comes with a CD and I'm getting curious about how it will turn out to be. But Gradshteyn and Ryzhik - the BOOK - are a must.

As a physicist I want to find a book to refresh my memory on theoretical mechanics. I came across this one, and after reading its first 4 chapters in continuation, I kow I don't need any other book. What a treat! Written by a past master, the book costs you next to nothing; yet as it's written by sure hand, it hasn't slightest pretention, just plain and insightful, natural and smoth flow, leads you almost effortlessly fowward. Even though I learned the subject before, I don't know of or even imagine a better exposition. Wow, I started to love Russian mathematicians.

Ok, not everyone needs to (or wants to) know calculus of variations. But if you are among the ones who, this is a great book to get started with (assuming you are in grad school and have a decent handle on calculus and some basis in dealing with differential equations). The text is clear and concise, and the financial investment is minimal. A good buy!

has written what is perhaps the ONLY user-friendly
textbook in mathematical physics!
The book begins with an extremely well-written
review of basics such as vector calculus and
matrix algebra. The discussion then turns to
a very thorough exploration of complex analysis.
Then we take a delightful tour through the marvels

functions, group theory, tensors, and many other wonderful,

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in spinor calculus. The authors' primary goal is to investigate the problem of defining Lie and covariant differentiation of spinor fields. This they do, but in addition, they carefully cover a number of standard topics and a number that I'd not seen elsewhere (such as the decomposition of a connection into constituents including the contorsion & metric-incompatibility tensors) in an extremely lucid way.

Best undergrduate math refresher ever.......2007-10-07
Wish I had come across this book earlier. Other undergraduate math refresher/review books are either too basic or too formulaic (if I had wanted a table of functions I would have bought one). The stress is clearly on concepts, followed by techniques. The book is a great review of all the oohs and aahs of undergraduate and high school mathematics that you have forgotten over the years. I graduated from high school 15 years ago and by page 3 I was doing derivatives from first principles. Richard Courant's "What is Mathematics?" would make an excellent companion to this book. For example I complemented the first two chapters on calculus with the chapters on number systems and, limits and continuity from Courant's book and I truly felt that my calculus review was complete.
A really helpful book.......2007-04-04
This is a great book for someone who did his undergraduate studies in Engineering or Chemistry (like me) and now is entering a Physics program. It is a great review of most of the important stuff in Math for Physics, without the boring mathematical style: straight to the point with relevant examples.
Another good point is that it has problems scattered INSIDE the text, which enforce you to do them. Most of them are interesting and in a physical context (as: Lorentz transformations - as an example of a "rotation" matrix , Maxwell equations - an exercise in vector analysis etc.)
In addition, I don't agree with the reviewers who claim that you cannot actually LEARN new topics from it. I never learned "complex functions" during my undergrad, and actually managed to learn it with Shankar - at least the things important to a physicist.
A drawback: a chapter about group theory could be useful.
Kind of a last resort.......2005-02-06
This book tries to cover pretty much all the mathematical methods you'd need in college-level physics if you haven't had much experience with them before. The trouble is that that is a LOT of math, and trying to cover that in a book this size is just asking for trouble.
If you don't know any of this stuff, this book is going to kill you. It covers multivariable and vector calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, functions of a complex variable, etc. That is maybe 4-5 different math courses. The idea is that physicists don't really need the rigor of theoretical math, they just need to learn the "tools" so they can do the practical, applied stuff.
This book is good if you already have a general idea of these concepts and just want to get the important parts.
A Quick math methods book.......2001-06-19
.If you enjoyed Klepner & Ramsay 's "Quick Calculus" as a school student for its engaging and dearly wished there was an undergrad math methods book in that style! The answer is this book. You may not find a work book type fromat like "Quick calculus" . But let me assure you despite the formal style and Prof Shankar's repute for being verbose you will find it like a rhaphsody and yet in coherent english. I only dearly wish Prof Shankar would kill some research time to write a Graduate level fitness programme. I think all the previous reviewers justly awarded 5 stars to this book. To those raters responisble for eating half a star , let me say there is no other engaging lively and painless math review than this. If you find this book painful I don't know what to say . But on the contrary of you thought the book was too easy then read the title it is a fitness programme not a discourse like Morse & Feshbach or Courant & Hilbert.
An excellent math review for physics.......2000-04-08
This book covers the basic areas of math needed for physics. It is quite readable and useful for self-study. It covers the standard topics in a concise fashion, but in sufficient detail to be useful. I used it as a personal math refresher after being away from advanced physics for some years. It gave me what I needed.

Excellent book for people who want to actually apply special functions........2006-01-19
As the title indicates, the book is designed with the goal of application front and center. That said, it is also important to note that the theoretical background is developed with full mathematical rigor. You can easily see this from the fact that whenever an infinite series is differentiated, its uniform convergence in the region of interest is always established beforehand. And this is just one example.
Now, given the fact that special functions is a vast subject, and the fact that the book is barely 300 pages long, it is obvious that the theoretical coverage, though rigorous, has to be reined in. By this I refer to the fact that most functions are developed from the point of view of series solutions to differential equations, while solution by contour integrals in the plane is basically absent. But then again, it doesn't matter how you develop the functions, the key is to know their properties and be able to apply them. The book will show you just how to do that. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
For a more broad-based theoretical coverage, I recommend Whittaker and Watson (but of course), and the book "Special Functions" by X. Z. Wang. These two books complement each other like lovers.

Yet another excellect translation by Silverman. I've only been in possession of this book for a few days but it's already becoming a favorite mathematics text. Not a pure mathematics text but certainly a very thorough, lucid and most certainly enjoyable discussion of applied mathematics with a particularly engaging discussion of the solution of partial differential equations (Laplacian, Poisson etc.) by means of separation of variables and integral transforms. Along the way it develops the theoretical essentials of gamma functions, exponential integrals, orthogonal polynomials, Bessel functions, spherical harmonics among others. Clearly written with an emphasis on explaining the process of discovering solutions rather than merely presenting particular solutions (though it does have enlightening examples). IMO, well worth the price.

Of course this book cannot be compared to " A course of modern analysis ", but as a book in special functions, it have served its purpose. I would also like to make a tribute to Richard Silverman for translating ( not just direct traslating, he translate in a style make it readable to English world. )
Excellent Source of Applications for Special Functions.......2000-06-03
This is a book which I cannot say much about except for the unusual thoroughness, accompanied by detail and depth in treatment of the underlying mathematical properties and applications of Special Functions.
Lebedev is the quintessential mathematical expert in applying Special Functions to problems in Physics and Engineering, being that he can illustrate all important concepts clearly and umambiguously with carefully prepared diagrams as well as words. I was able to cite the solution of the a problem involving a propagating electromagnetic wave along a transmission line for an important Engineering course project. For such a problem, Lebedev offers a far more detailed and precise solution with given Special Functions than anything I have ever seen in other books of the same nature with the possible exception of a specialized treatise by an MIT EE faculty member on applied electromagnetism. He also comes across as meticulous in derivations of solutions to problems worked out compared to many other authors whose works I have read. This is because he hardly ever skips an important step in deriving a solution for any given problem by leaving it out for the reader's imagination. Yet we know Lebedev as perhaps a mathematician who may not be realistically expected to come up with such complete and exhaustive solutions to practical or real-world problems, worked out with clarity as well as precision and depth. There are numerous other examples which he worked out for different applications (e.g, Legendre's and Laguerre's functions) invariably after he took pains to delineate the various mathematical properties of the Special Functions utilized to obtain the closed-form solutions. He also covers various mathematical functions which may not be as familiar to many engineering practitioners but nonetheless have an important place in applied mathematical analysis. In a sense, he saves them for occasions when we as readers may need to probe further into unfamiliar territory.
So if you are looking for depth and precision in analysis of physical problems in Engineering and Science, or are trying to cope with reaearch problems in Applied Mathematics, try out this book by Lebedev. It can initially come across as difficult to understand, but Lebedev expects the reader to follow along through diligence. It is almost one of a kind, being that it is very clear and lucid without noticeable loss in depth and mathematical rigor. I highly recommend it because I believe that few other books can even come close in offering good examples in solutions to real-world problems and, at the same time, demonstrate the power of Special Functions in applications. Of course, it is also very inexpensive.
