Explore the relationship between quantum mechanics and information-age applications
This volume takes an altogether unique approach to quantum mechanics. Providing an in-depth exposition of quantum mechanics fundamentals, it shows how these concepts are applied to most of today's information technologies, whether they are electronic devices or materials. No other text makes this critical, essential leap from theory to real-world applications.
The book's lively discussion of the mathematics involved fits right in with contemporary multidisciplinary trends in education: Once the basic formulation has been derived in a given chapter, the connection to important technological problems is summarily described. The many helpful features include
* Twenty-eight application-oriented sections that focus on lasers, transistors, magnetic memories, superconductors, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and other important technology-driving materials and devices
* One hundred solved examples, with an emphasis on numerical results and the connection between the physics and its applications
* End-of-chapter problems that ground the student in both fundamental and applied concepts
* Numerous figures and tables to clarify the various topics and provide a global view of the problems under discussion
* Over two hundred illustrations to highlight problems and text
A book for the information age, Quantum Mechanics: Fundamentals and Applications to Technology promises to become a standard in departments of electrical engineering, applied physics, and materials science, as well as physics. It is an excellent text for senior undergraduate and graduate students, and a helpful reference for practicing scientists, engineers, and chemists in the semiconductor and electronic industries.

5 out of 5 stars Great for EE or MSE students.......2006-02-06

This book is easy to read. It is written by a professor in the EE Department at the University of Michigan. There are some technical applications of Quantum Mechanics. I strongly recommend to engineering students who want to really understand solid state physics and quantum optics. This book is a good introduction.

4 out of 5 stars Singh's Quantum Mechanics.......1997-11-18

This volume has indeed taken a very unique approach to quantum mechanics, and I liked it very much. However, a few things may need to be improved: 1) I have noted that a significant portion of this volume is clearly taken directly from the excellent Q.M. book of Schiff. It would be nice if the author could give a little bit more of his own explanations and insights to make the volume even more original and useful. 2) I felt that too little emphasis was given to the matrix approach to Q.M., making some materials difficult to follow when the matrix formulation is invoked. 3) The application sections really linked well Q.M. to real-life problems. Being a devices physicist myself, the topics of these application examples suited my taste well. However, some example details were simply too brief, turning them into a source of confusion rather than clarification (e.g. "Excitons in Semiconductors." More words should be said about the "Central cell nature..."). - S.C. Ph.D.

    Book Description

The control of complex systems is one of the most important aspects in dealing with systems exhibiting nonlinear behaviour or similar features that defy traditional control techniques. This specific subject is gradually becoming known as cybernetical physics, borrowing methods from both theoretical physics and control engineering. Emphasis of the book is on the examination of fundamental limits on energy transformation by means of control procedures in both conservative and dissipative systems. A survey of application in physics includes the control of synchronisation of coupled oscillators, pendulum chains, reactions in physical chemistry and of quantum systems such as the dissociation of diatomic molecules.

This book has been written having research from various backgrounds in physics, mathematics and engineering in mind and is thus also suitable as introduction to graduate students working on the understanding of a broad range of complex systems in the natural sciences.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-04-11

This book is an excelent introduction of quantum mechanics for engineers and non-physicists.

5 out of 5 stars stresses important practical cases.......2006-12-17

Levi's book differs from standard QM texts, in furnishing more of an applied bent. Directed towards those students in applied physics, materials science and engineering. For example, there is a superb chapter on electron propagation in crystals. Where we see how to describe propagation by transmission matrices. And how energy bands arise due to the periodicity of the potential seen by electrons. Of course, solid state texts also discuss this. But the treatment here of such ideas as tunnelling, and using the WKB approximation to describe that tunnelling in a semiquantitative manner, is clear and detailed. Plus, the examples focus on important heterostructures, where band gap engineering is important.

For semiconductor lasers, there is a similar treatment. With comparisons amongst the common types of laser diodes, like GaAs and InGaAsP.

The numerous problems and the copiously worked out examples are also a nice feature of the text.

4 out of 5 stars A window to the world of quantum mechanics for the engineer... but not completely self-contained.......2005-08-17

There is no shortage of quantum mechanics text to choose from. And if I had solely relied on the majority recommendations for an introductory text, I would have certainly missed this gem.

The author is very successful presenting the recondite fundamentals of quantum mechanics in a manner accessible to material scientists and engineers. This is accomplished without losing the rigor necessary to build a strong foundation. Applications of concepts are dispersed through out the chapters and keep the reader's attention.

But by the far the best selling point of this book are the worked problems at the end of the chapters. It is my personal opinion that if a textbook fails to at least provide final answers and solution hints to presented exercises, it is not really a textbook, but a reference reserved for those who have been adequately exposed to the material before. Here all end of the chapter questions are accompanied with worked solutions. This is a rarity among all undergrad or graduate science or engineering texts. This alone makes it valuable for self-study.

To those completely uninitiated to quantum mechanics, I do not recommend this book as a sole source because it is not sufficiently self-contained. It would be best to complement it with "Introduction to Applied Quantum and Statistical Mechanics" by Hagelstein. I have yet to read "Applied Quantum Mechanics" by Kroemer, which has recieved much praise and appears to be another excellent introductory source.

      Book Description

The combined finite discrete element method is a relatively new computational tool aimed at problems involving static and / or dynamic behaviour of systems involving a large number of solid deformable bodies. Such problems include fragmentation using explosives (e.g rock blasting), impacts, demolition (collapsing buildings), blast loads, digging and loading processes, and powder technology.
The combined finite-discrete element method - a natural extension of both discrete and finite element methods - allows researchers to model problems involving the deformability of either one solid body, a large number of bodies, or a solid body which fragments (e.g. in rock blasting applications a more or less intact rock mass is transformed into a pile of solid rock fragments of different sizes, which interact with each other). The topic is gaining in importance, and is at the forefront of some of the current efforts in computational modeling of the failure of solids. Essential reading for postgraduates, researchers and software engineers working in mechanical engineering.

      Book Description

Earthquakes, a plucked string, ocean waves crashing on the beach, the sound waves that allow us to recognize known voices. Waves are everywhere, and the propagation and classical properties of these apparently disparate phenomena can be described by the same mathematical methods: variational calculus, characteristics theory, and caustics. Taking a medium-by-medium approach, Julian Davis explains the mathematics needed to understand wave propagation in inviscid and viscous fluids, elastic solids, viscoelastic solids, and thermoelastic media, including hyperbolic partial differential equations and characteristics theory, which makes possible geometric solutions to nonlinear wave problems. The result is a clear and unified treatment of wave propagation that makes a diverse body of mathematics accessible to engineers, physicists, and applied mathematicians engaged in research on elasticity, aerodynamics, and fluid mechanics.

This book will particularly appeal to those working across specializations and those who seek the truly interdisciplinary understanding necessary to fully grasp waves and their behavior. By proceeding from concrete phenomena (e.g., the Doppler effect, the motion of sinusoidal waves, energy dissipation in viscous fluids, thermal stress) rather than abstract mathematical principles, Davis also creates a one-stop reference that will be prized by students of continuum mechanics and by mathematicians needing information on the physics of waves.

1 out of 5 stars Next edition please.......2007-04-12

Looking for a self-contained treatise on the mathematics and physics of wave propagation, I bought this book having seen the table of contents and some sample pages. I was particularly interested in the sections on characteristic theory as a basis for solving PDEs in a physically meaningful way. When I received the book it did not disappoint; the subject matter coverage is comprehensive, the layout excellent and easy to follow, with gifted insight demonstrated by the author of the common mathematical threads running through many different physical examples. But afterwards I experienced an extreme let down. As I dipped into several sections to follow the detail, I found far too many errors in the math, not numeric errors but algebraic. This presumably is the author's responsibility, not the editor's. A new edition is urgently required.

        Book Description

This book introduces the finite element and boundary element methods (FEM and BEM) for applications to quantum mechanical systems. A discretization of the action integral with finite elements, followed by application of variational principles, brings a very general approach to the solution of Schroedinger's equation for physical systems in arbitrary geometries with complex mixed boundary conditions. The variational approach is a common thread through the book and is used for the improvement of solutions to spectroscopic accuracy, to adaptively improve finite element meshs, to develop a time-dependent theory, and also to generate the solution of large sparse matrix eigenvalue problems. A thorough introduction to BEM is given using the modelling of surface plasmons, quantum electron waveguides, and quantum scattering as illustrative examples. The book should be useful to graduate students and researchers in basic quantum theory, quantum semiconductor modeling, computational physics, mathematics and chemistry

            Book Description

Mechanics and mathematics have been complementary partners since Newton's time and the history of science shows much evidence of the beneficial influence of these disciplines on each other. Driven by increasingly elaborate modern technological applications the symbiotic relationship between mathematics and mechanics is continually growing. However, the increasingly large number of specialist journals has generated a duality gap between the two partners, and this gap is growing wider. Advances in Mechanics and Mathematics (AMMA) is intended to bridge this gap. Audience: This book is suitable for scientists, engineers and mathematicians, including advanced students (doctoral and post-doctoral level) at universities and in industry interested in modern mechanics and applied mathematics.

            Book Description

Quantum mechanics is widely recognized as the basic law which governs all of nature, including all materials and devices. It has always been essential to the understanding of material properties, and as devices become smaller it is also essential for studying their behavior. Nevertheless, only a small fraction of graduate engineers and materials scientists take a course giving a systematic presentation of the subject. The courses for physics students tend to focus on the fundamentals and formal background, rather than on application, and do not fill the need. This invaluable text has been designed to fill the very apparent gap.

The book covers those parts of quantum theory which may be necessary for a modern engineer. It focuses on the approximations and concepts which allow estimates of the entire range of properties of nuclei, atoms, molecules, and solids, as well as the behavior of lasers and other quantum-optic devices. It may well prove useful also to graduate students in physics, whose courses on quantum theory tend not to include any of these applications. The material has been the basis of a course taught to graduate engineering students for the past four years at Stanford University.

4 out of 5 stars explains microscopic quantum devices and structures.......2007-02-07

Harrison's book is a good compromise between learning the full, formal maths approach to quantum mechanics and a pragmatic desire by engineering students to know enough to do useful work. It deprecates such ideas as operators in Hilbert spaces in favour of describing such practical implementations as quantum dots, quantum wires, tunnelling and other inherently quantum phenomena.

The intent is to expose the reader to current active areas of solid state research and engineering, at the microscopic level when quantum effects must be taken into consideration. There is not enough here to do serious band structure calculations, for example. But you gain enough knowledge to understand and use band structure results that are presented to you.
