Book Description
This volume is the result of extensive research into the foundations of quantum mechanics, and presents a new formulation of quantum theory which resolves many existing problems. The formalism is experimentally motivated and is shown to be consistent with recent foundational approaches to quantum mechanics. It is based on new extensions of the theory of group representations, which are developed and illustrated in the text. This new approach establishes connections with quantum logic, philosophy, and the history of science, allowing a broad range of applications not only in physics, but also in such areas as signal processing and neuroscience.
Audience: This book will be of interest to researchers and students. It is recommended as a supplementary textbook for advanced courses in quantum mechanics. A background in quantum mechanics and complex analysis is assumed.
Book Description
This book will be useful to anyone who wants to understand the use of quantum theory for the description of physical processes. It is a graduate level text, ideal for independent study, and includes numerous figures, exercises, bibliographical references, and even some computer programs.
The first chapters introduce formal tools: the mathematics are precise, but not excessively abstract. The physical interpretation too is rigorous. It makes no use of the uncertainty principle of other ill-defined notions. The central part of the book is devoted to Bell's theorem and to the Kochen-Specker theorem. It is here that quantum phenomena depart most radically from classical physics. There has recently been considerable progress on these issues, and the latest developments have been included. The final chapters discuss further topics of current research: spacetime symmetries, quantum thermodynamics and information theory, semiclassical methods, irreversibility, quantum chaos, and especially the measuring process. In particular, it is shown how modern techniques allow the extraction of more information from a physical system than traditional measurement methods.
For physicists, mathematicians and philosophers of science with an interest in the applications and foundations of quantum theory. The volume is suitable as a supplementary graduate textbook.

A High class presentation of fundemental quantum theory .......2007-09-02
This book is the result of something like six years of work. The highly contemplative tone of this deep composition reflects the labor of the author. It is extremely well presented. The many problems range from quite easy (but not trivial) to time demanding mini-projects. The book is written for self-study, too. Which, to me, is something more authors need to embrace.
Final Note: This texts serves as a sophisticated introduction to the foundational aspects of quantum theory. A bit of higher math, computational skill, and a working knowledge of elementary theoretical physics will be useful.
Wonderful Book.......2007-01-05
I don't have a physics background. I wanted to understand from the scratch the connections between thermodynamics, information theory and the quantum world. Also I wanted to understand the issue of quantum entanglement a little deeper. I wouldn't say that I found everything that I was looking for in this book. But it did give me a very good start and more pointers for what to look for.
Very good.......1998-03-23
One of the rare books that give a deep and balanced account of Quantum Theory... Concepts are emphasized as much as techniques. Anyone who wants to understand (as opposed to merely use) quantum mechanics should at least have a brief look through such a book...

Book Description
This book is the first to present quantum logic in relation to von Neumann algebra theory. Based on developing quantum logic in terms of operator algebras, the book reconstructs and reevaluates the Birkhoff-von Neumann concept of quantum logic. It also covers recent results such as the violation of Bell's inequality in relativistic quantum field theory, the logical independence of von Neumann lattices and the status of the common cause principle in quantum field theory. Other topics treated include the theory of quantum conditional and statistical inference, an operator algebraic treatment of the hidden variable problem and the semantic approach to physical theories.
Audience: This volume will be of interest to mathematicians, physicists, mathematical physicists and historians and philosophers of science involved in interpretational problems of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory.
Book Description
This classic text provides a comprehensive exposition of the concepts and techniques of quantum mechanics. The phenomena treated are sufficiently simple to allow the student to readily assess the validity of the models so that attention is not deflected from the heart of the subject. To that end, the book concentrates on systems that can either be solved exactly or be handled by well-controlled, plausible approximations. With few exceptions, this means systems with a small number of degrees of freedom. The exceptions are many—electron atoms, the electromagnetic field and the Dirac equation. The inclusion of the last two topics reflects the belief that every physicist should now have some knowledge of these cornerstones of modern physics.
This new edition has been completely revised and rewritten throughout, but retains the clarity and readability of the first edition.

Customer Reviews:
Not for the uninitiated!!!.......2006-04-23
This is a high level, formal treatment of quantum mechanics. It is very elegant and there are many things in this book that are not covered in many other grad level quantum text books. For example, the nice treatment of the Kepler problem using F+, F- operators, a lengthy discussion of the interpration of QM/entangled states, etc, or a good treatment of the Landau levels in both symmetric and landau gauge. The emphasis on the ideas of the rotation group, Wigner-Eckhart, etc are also very nice. However, user beware, the textbook skips steps, sometimes lacks clarity, and may assume mathematics and quantum that you dont have yet. This is not a casual read. You should have a piece of paper in front of you to work through the steps. But I can assure you that in the end it is very worthwhile and gives you a glimpse into what makes quantum mechanics very beautiful and elegant.
If you have read Griffiths before this you may not be prepared. Try Shankar first then move onto this book.
Good advanced QM book ........2005-05-02
This is a complete , modern QM book ...
Authors discuss issues which are usually missed in other QM textbooks .
Not for beginner ... This is rather 2nd or 3rd reading ....

Book Description
In spite of the impressive predictive power and strong mathematical structure of quantum mechanics, the theory has always suffered from important conceptual problems. Some of these have never been solved. Motivated by this state of affairs, a number of physicists have worked together for over thirty years to develop
stochastic electrodynamics, a physical theory aimed at finding a conceptually satisfactory, realistic explanation of quantum phenomena.
This is the first book to present a comprehensive review of stochastic electrodynamics, from its origins to present-day developments. After a general introduction for the non-specialist, a critical discussion is presented of the main results of the theory as well as of the major problems encountered. A chapter on stochastic optics and some interesting consequences for local realism and the Bell inequalities is included. In the final chapters the authors propose and develop a new version of the theory that brings it in closer correspondence with quantum mechanics and sheds some light on the wave aspects of matter and the linkage with quantum electrodynamics.
Audience: The volume will be of interest to scholars and postgraduate students of theoretical and mathematical physics, foundations and philosophy of physics, and teachers of theoretical physics and quantum mechanics, electromagnetic theory, and statistical physics (stochastic processes).

Book Description
Explore the relationship between quantum mechanics and information-age applications
This volume takes an altogether unique approach to quantum mechanics. Providing an in-depth exposition of quantum mechanics fundamentals, it shows how these concepts are applied to most of today's information technologies, whether they are electronic devices or materials. No other text makes this critical, essential leap from theory to real-world applications.
The book's lively discussion of the mathematics involved fits right in with contemporary multidisciplinary trends in education: Once the basic formulation has been derived in a given chapter, the connection to important technological problems is summarily described. The many helpful features include
* Twenty-eight application-oriented sections that focus on lasers, transistors, magnetic memories, superconductors, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and other important technology-driving materials and devices
* One hundred solved examples, with an emphasis on numerical results and the connection between the physics and its applications
* End-of-chapter problems that ground the student in both fundamental and applied concepts
* Numerous figures and tables to clarify the various topics and provide a global view of the problems under discussion
* Over two hundred illustrations to highlight problems and text
A book for the information age, Quantum Mechanics: Fundamentals and Applications to Technology promises to become a standard in departments of electrical engineering, applied physics, and materials science, as well as physics. It is an excellent text for senior undergraduate and graduate students, and a helpful reference for practicing scientists, engineers, and chemists in the semiconductor and electronic industries.
Customer Reviews:
Great for EE or MSE students.......2006-02-06
This book is easy to read. It is written by a professor in the EE Department at the University of Michigan. There are some technical applications of Quantum Mechanics. I strongly recommend to engineering students who want to really understand solid state physics and quantum optics. This book is a good introduction.
Singh's Quantum Mechanics.......1997-11-18
This volume has indeed taken a very unique approach to quantum mechanics, and I liked it very much. However, a few things may need to be improved: 1) I have noted that a significant portion of this volume is clearly taken directly from the excellent Q.M. book of Schiff. It would be nice if the author could give a little bit more of his own explanations and insights to make the volume even more original and useful. 2) I felt that too little emphasis was given to the matrix approach to Q.M., making some materials difficult to follow when the matrix formulation is invoked. 3) The application sections really linked well Q.M. to real-life problems. Being a devices physicist myself, the topics of these application examples suited my taste well. However, some example details were simply too brief, turning them into a source of confusion rather than clarification (e.g. "Excitons in Semiconductors." More words should be said about the "Central cell nature..."). - S.C. Ph.D.

Customer Reviews:
Nice condensed book.......2007-09-07
This is a great book to support all the information you can get in a single continuum mechanics class. It could be nice if it has a more detailed treatment of the mohr's circle because of his power in 2D and an approach to the analysis of shells and plates.
Best regards and enjoy it!
a good source for a "quick review".......2003-12-03
Like most other Schaum's series, the theory sections are condensed, which makes the part more like a compendium of continuum mechanics. The theoretical sections are thus good for a quick review of the material but not a good resource for "learning" the material. The biggest advantage of the book is that it provides an inexpensive summary of continuum mechanics.
The downside of the book is that the solved problems are not similar to the type of problems one confronts in a typical continuum course. In most cases several problems (statement together with the solution) are presented in a single page, which shows that each problem has been solved in 1-5 lines. I personally don't like most of the problems presented here; however, the problems could be useful for warming up.
A better book is "Introduction to the Mechanics of a Continuous Medium" by Malvern, which is the best I've seen in explaining the intricacies of the theory. Another good complement is Holzapfel's "Nonlinear Solid Mechanics: A Continuum Approach for Engineering", which contains both the theory AND some solved sample problems.
better than most professors, but..........2003-04-13
Better than most professors, but concepts are still difficult to grasp. Have you ever had one of those tennis ball machines go crazy at you? That is how continuum mechanics is, you constantly have things hurled in your direction and you don't know how to stop them. The concepts are very difficult to understand since I'm sure many professors have a hard time understanding the course material itself. The Schaum's outline helps very much in the sense that it slows down the hurling of material and it explains where many equations are derived from. This book stands out above the rest of continuum mechanics books in the sense that it offers solved problems, which is rare for such a theoretical class.
Not really a very good book.......2003-03-26
Not really a very good book on continuum mechanics. However, it
does summarise some very important points and equations useful
for quick reference. The exercise is not so great.
Very helpful, but also very theoretical.......2000-03-28
The problems in this book where very helpful to me in my applied continuum mechanics course, but they tended more towards the theoretical side. A good purchase for students and researchers dealing with solid mechanics and mechanics of materials.

Book Description
Providing a unified account of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, Fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics covers the principles and formalism of quantum mechanics and the development and application of general techniques for the solution of quantum mechanical problems. The author has done everything possible to make the math in this book accessible. The book is divided into three parts. The first part provides the historical basis and mathematical foundations on nonrelativistic quantum theory. The physical systems considered in this part are mainly in one dimension. The second part covers the fundamentals of quantum theory in three dimensions. Many-particle systems, the motion of a particle in three dimensions, angular and spin momenta, interaction of a charged particle with external fields, and matrix mechanical formulation of quantum mechanics are discussed in this part. The third part contains the approximation methods used in quantum mechanics and scattering theory. Carefully designed to cover the entire topic, the book provides sufficient breadth and depth both to familiarize the reader with the basic ideas and mathematical expressions of quantum mechanics and to form the basis for deeper understanding later.

A nice book but incomplete.......2005-06-30
Whenever looking up something about quantum mechanics I start with Gottfried. Measurement theory, angular momenta, elementary scattering theory - all are well done.
The book would be more useful if Gottfried had ever finished the second part of it! Several sections are lead-ins to material which was intended for a second volume.
nice guys write tough books.......2004-03-03
Quantum mechanics taught from the point of view that mathematics leads and concepts follow. This is great if you already know the concepts or are very gifted at math, but it is not for the average student unless supplemented. (Consider Shankar.) A lot of ground is covered rapidly in this book, so it might be a very good reference for an experienced researcher.
