5 out of 5 stars good product, fast shipping.......2007-05-21

Good product, but not made to learn a massive amount of Swahili in a short time span. Instead, it's an in-depth coverage of grammar and language rules. Excellent package if you have a considerable amount of time to devote to learning Swahili.

5 out of 5 stars Great course!.......2007-03-21

This course to teach yourself Swahili is easy for anybody - all you need is to take time and study.

5 out of 5 stars Good Buy.......2006-11-04

It was hard to find a book on Swahili. This one is easy to follow, the CD's are great and they have quizes after each chapter. It will teach you everything you need to know.

4 out of 5 stars No passive learning in your car.......2006-08-04

This is a very thorough course - goes well beyond a phrasebook, and the CD is only worthwhile if you read along and do the exercises. So, no passive learning by listening over and over on your commute.

So, for a quick course in airport and hotel Swahili, choose something else. For a working knowledge of the language, this is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Lose.......2006-07-24

At this price? You will speaking Swahili after soaking in this whole book. All you need after this book is the CD (so you can hear), and a dictionary to extend your vocabulary. The only fault I have is that some words in the English half of the book's dictionary aren't found in the Swahili side, and vice versa. But, this is an EXCELLENT beginners course. An excellent value. The structure of the language is well spelled out.

5 out of 5 stars You can't do any better than this.......2007-08-22

Thai is a very difficult language for westerners to learn. And being a tonal language, you have to hear it spoken correctly in order to learn it. You definitely need all 30 lessons that are in the comprehensive program. They will give you a basic understanding of how the language works. It would be nice if pimsleur would come out with further lessons, but until they do you can use this program as a stepping stone into more advanced thai programs.

Note: Some of the reviews here are mistaken when they say this course only has the first 10 lessons. This is the comprehensive program that has the entire 30 lessions in it.

5 out of 5 stars About As Flawless As A Language Course Can Get.......2007-07-15

My significant other is from Thailand, and over the course of some shopping excursions into Thai CD/Movie/Book stores I picked up a cheap (~$20) two-CD Thai language introductory course. Over the next few months I tried to press it into the service of educating me and the sum total of what I got out of it, aside from a smattering of arbitrarily-presented and disconnected nouns, was "Where is the beer," "Where is the toilet," and "I love you." Three cheers for The Three Most Important Phrases In Any Language, but it quickly became evident that a better course was going to be needed if I wanted any kind of usable facility with the language.

I sprung for the Pimsleur Thai comprehensive course - somewhere around $170 from one of Amazon's affiliate sellers (above) - and was instantly and intensely relieved at the logical soundness of its presentation. The people who created this course are not people interested in throwing together a hash of arbitrary words and phrases, they are people who *know how to teach* - something of a lost art these days.

After my experience with that horrid first course - and memories of the Spanish and German classes I had in high school, which is to say: hazy - I had started looking specifically for *method* in language teaching as a necessity. A well-thought-out language course ought to match as closely as possible the epistemology we use intuitively when we're learning our native language at ages 0-6.

The language student should be expending his entire mental effort in learning the building blocks of language - nouns, verbs, objects, adjectives and adverbs - while concurrently learning the rudiments of sentence structure and syntax. He should not have to waste an instant struggling against the course itself - in the best-case a language course should be utterly transparent to the user. On that score the Pimsleur Thai course is nothing short of flawless. Learning a new language inescapably requires effort and dedication, but with Pimsleur's course none of that effort is expended in wrestling with shoddy teaching methodology. You *will* see results from this course, and there is an intense sense of both accomplishment and wonder in every new level of understanding you will gain.

The level of complexity advances at a consistent pace; the repetition of new terms and the period of time alotted for providing responses are perfectly designed; variations on phrases and sentences are logically and thoroughly presented. This course's strength is that it is laid out in such a way as to cultivate and reinforce the student's ability to *understand* the language, rather than merely catalog an extensive collection of canned phrases by rote memorization. You will learn basic grammar without a whole lot of head-scratching and learn to alter and apply it to varying situations. That learning, in turn, is reinforced by the fact that previously-learned material is overlapped seamlessly into subsequent lessons, then expanded upon.

The only downside to this course - which, being that I'm only a third of the way through it I can only infer from the comments of others - is that there are as yet no followup, advanced courses. Hopefully Pimsleur will step up to the plate on that in the near future, but I'm thinking that the diligent student will be able to take the rudiments he learns here and gain an advanced, working ability at Thai with some supplementary vocabulary and grammar from books and other courses, and of course with discussion groups and direct immersion in Thai communities, either here or abroad.

I'm amazed at how easily and rapidly I've progressed after my frustration with a lesser course. Presumably Pimsleur's other language courses are this good? 'Can't wait to find out. Based on my own experience I think Pimsleur should get an award for this course. Bravo!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing, but probably the best you'll find.......2007-06-09

I did a ton of research on Thai language CDs for my honeymoon last year. I needed a CD-only option, as I was using them on my daily commute. This eliminated most of the audio+computer options like Rosetta Stone. While I learned some basics from these CDs, they weren't worth the time I committed to listening to them. Essentially, almost all of the lessons teach you language that would be helpful if you're an American businessman trying to pick up a local woman in a bar. If that doesn't fit your description, I'd avoid these CDs. If it does fit your description, these would be perfect for you!

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Cent!.......2007-01-02

First, there are some people confused who are writing reviews. This is NOT the short course. It is the longer one.

This method of learning is so fantastic. I have all the lessons on my iPod. I learn as I drive to work. I practice in the gym on the treadmill. The method is based on listen and repeat - no books, flash cards, etc. I am so impressed with how much I have learned. I blow everyone away at any Thai restaurant. They are so excited that "the white guy" speaks Thai!!!

I cannot wait to go back to Thailand and use all I have learned.

Don't waste another minute......buy it...and get started.

5 out of 5 stars A great course -- only one complaint.......2006-12-27

This is a great way to begin learning Thai -- to acquire the essential foundation people need in learning a foreign language. The only complaint I have is that -- once you start seriously looking into the Pimsleur method -- you discover that the complete foundation includes Level I, Level II, and Level III. Each level has thirty 30-minute lessons. And there is no indication of when Level II and Level III are coming.

On the other hand, there is some indication about when the opposite course (English for Thai Speakers) is coming: December 2009.

But this "complaint" only amounts to saying: I want more! This is very useful stuff!

The Sun Also Rises first appeared in 1926, and yet it's as fresh and clean and fine as it ever was, maybe finer. Hemingway's famously plain declarative sentences linger in the mind like poetry: "Brett was damned good-looking. She wore a slipover jersey sweater and a tweed skirt, and her hair was brushed back like a boy's. She started all that." His cast of thirtysomething dissolute expatriates--Brett and her drunken fiancé, Mike Campbell, the unhappy Princeton Jewish boxer Robert Cohn, the sardonic novelist Bill Gorton--are as familiar as the "cool crowd" we all once knew. No wonder this quintessential lost-generation novel has inspired several generations of imitators, in style as well as lifestyle.

Jake Barnes, Hemingway's narrator with a mysterious war wound that has left him sexually incapable, is the heart and soul of the book. Brett, the beautiful, doomed English woman he adores, provides the glamour of natural chic and sexual unattainability. Alcohol and post-World War I anomie fuel the plot: weary of drinking and dancing in Paris cafés, the expatriate gang decamps for the Spanish town of Pamplona for the "wonderful nightmare" of a week-long fiesta. Brett, with fiancé and ex-lover Cohn in tow, breaks hearts all around until she falls, briefly, for the handsome teenage bullfighter Pedro Romero. "My God! he's a lovely boy," she tells Jake. "And how I would love to see him get into those clothes. He must use a shoe-horn." Whereupon the party disbands.

But what's most shocking about the book is its lean, adjective-free style. The Sun Also Rises is Hemingway's masterpiece--one of them, anyway--and no matter how many times you've read it or how you feel about the manners and morals of the characters, you won't be able to resist its spell. This is a classic that really does live up to its reputation. --David Laskin

Book Description

The Sun Also Rises was Ernest Hemingway's first big novel, and immediately established Hemingway as one of the great prose stylists, and one of the preeminent writers of his time. It is also the book that encapsulates the angst of the post-World War I generation, known as the Lost Generation. This poignantly beautiful story of a group of American and English expatriates in Paris on an excursion to Pamplona represents a dramatic step forward for Hemingway's evolving style. Featuring Left Bank Paris in the 1920s and brutally realistic descriptions of bullfighting in Spain, the story is about the flamboyant Lady Brett Ashley and the hapless Jake Barnes. In an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions, this is the Lost Generation.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty in words.......2007-09-17

Ernest Hemmingway in his unique style delivers a masterpiece in adult fiction. His prose is concise and words beauty known only to the reader. He creates a wonderful atmosphere of the locations and his character's travel through the landscape and through emotions is captured exceptionally well.

This is a timeless classic. There is nothing I can say to convince anyone to read it. The characters are well-developed. There is love and passion and pain and beauty. The world that Hemmingway recreates belongs with these characters. The book launched a successful career and in me it set in motion the desire to read everything ever written by this brilliant writer.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2007-09-03

The Sun Also Rises turned out to be quite a remarkable read and a novel worthy of classic status. It is absolutely amazing how much symbolism and hidden meaning Hemingway can sneak in through his distinctive clear and simple prose style. On the other hand, if you are not paying attention and miss the implied messages then this novel will strike you as nothing particularly special.

The book is about a group of American and English expatriates residing in Paris during the 1920s. They live aimless, purposeless lives after World War I because their whole value system has been shaken up. They are members of the "Lost Generation", a term popularized by this very book. Although the plot is simplistic, with Jake Barnes and his friends traveling to Spain for the Pamplona fiesta, the brilliance of the novel shines through in the relationships and dialogue between characters. The rambunctious Lady Brett Ashley is the target of four men's desires and Hemingway uses her to exemplify the destructiveness of sex and the male insecurity felt after World War I. It is a world where everyone drowns their sorrows in alcohol. The novel ends in an outstanding description of a bull-fight and on a hopeful, wishing note.

The novel opened my eyes to how drastic the effects of WWI were on soldiers and how disenchanted some of them became with prewar values and notions. I also was truly impressed by Hemingway's bullfighting descriptions and how he made them seem almost like poetic events. The characters were likable and compelling, too, and gave the novel much life even without an enchanting plot. Although I couldn't relate to the characters all that well, I'm sure someone who has had more of life's experiences will have no trouble doing so. Altogether, Hemingway created a novel that changed the literary world forever and will leave a lasting impression in many minds for generations to come - it sure did in mine.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible.......2007-08-02

I'm no scholar, no student of literature. I just like to read. Everything from Huxley to HST to Dan Brown... if a book is good, I'll read it. If a book sucks, I'll usually put it down about halfway through.

That's what bothers me the most about The Sun Also Rises. I've heard nothing but good things about Hemingway, how he's the greatest American author of all time. So even though page after page of this book was boring to the point of tears, I kept reading. I gave Hemingway the behefit of the doubt that at some point, SOMETHING other than dinner, drinking, and everyone taking their turn on the neighborhood whore would happen.

Unfortunately, nothing happens. There's no plot, no conflict -- wait, that's not true... everyone hates the Jewish guy and everyone wants to sleep with the same woman... let me clarify -- there's no conflict interesting enough to carry a novel, no interesting characters (everyone is either an alcoholic or a slut, who you'd think might be interesting, but they are really just sad and pathetic), and absolutely no action. I wish I had read something else by Hemingway first, because odds are that ANY book would be better than this one. But now that this is my first impression of him, unfortunately, I don't know if I'll ever pick up another one of his books. It really is that bad.

DON'T READ THIS BOOK!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Sitting Around, Feeling Sorry for Themselves.......2007-07-08

In the shallow world of the characters of Ernest Hemingway, everybody seems to spend most of their time feeling sorry for themself. Going beyond the tragic hero, the charcters are perhaps best described as arrogant and self-centered. Coupled with the terse writing style of Hemingway, this makes for a quick read with a somewhat clever plot.

While bull fighting actually takes place in the plot, it is also a clever metaphor used in the story. The main character Robert Cohn follows Lady Brett Ashley around like a stupid bull follows a bull fighter. It is hard to feel sorry for Cohn when everybody realizes Brett's disinterest in Cohn except Cohn. It comes to a head when Brett falls for the bull fighter and Cohn assaults his friends for viciously taunting him about Brett's disinterest.

While the main theme is somewhat clever, much of the other prose seems to be self-loathing and scenary. When the characters get drunk, they pour their hearts and failures out like spilling wine. Even when Bret finds her resolution, the reader could anticipate the downfall.

It is difficult to like any character in the story which may leave the reader with an awkward feeling. The characters are depraved and infantile while searching for a love that eludes them. While the search for an elusive love is one that readers can identify with, the flaws in the characters make evident why their goals elude them.

2 out of 5 stars Hemingway good, story bad.......2007-06-24

I've often wondered how I got through college as an English major without reading any Hemingway. The classics have always been my favorites, and American lit specifically. So, as an adult, I've tried to add some of those critically acclaimed books I missed in undergrad to my "Have Read" list. The first Hemingway book I read post-college was A Farewell to Arms. I liked it ... not loved, but liked it enough to read more of his work. But this one ... I struggled through it. I felt like each page was the same -- group of friends who don't all like each other and lots and lots of alcohol. I did make it to the end despite my minimal interest in the story (or lack there of) because, no matter what the story is, Ernest Hemingway's style of writing is a great example of a true gift.

It contains twenty-six lessons, exercises (with answers), a list of hieroglyphic signs, and a dictionary, as well as twenty-five essays on the most important aspects of ancient Egyptian history, society, religion and literature. Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Scholars and Enthusiasts........2007-08-28

Dr. Allen has really done a good job laying it all out in this book. Obviously, this is something of an esoteric subject, but for many budding scholars and amateur enthusiasts who are genuinely interested in learning this language, this book is essential reading. The grammer is clearly explained, and compared to contemporary languages, and the hierglyphs are easy to discern after a few lessons.

What is also commendable is the use of essays throughout the book that lay out the broader context of Middle Egyptian. Without that, the book would be noticeably drier. I think the only addition I would make to this book would be use of example dialogue to help reinforce the concepts. Otherwise, this is a good book to own.

3 out of 5 stars Enough of the grammar already!!!.......2006-11-04

This is an excellent book, no doubt. Allen is quite obviously an academic when it comes to Egyptian and linguistics. Let me repeat, this is an excellent book: for people with a linguistic background. That said, Joe Blow (read people with the average educational background in grammar) will most likely, as I did, find this approach to Egyptian with its constant, non-stop emphasis on adverbial complement this and noun phrase that approach, overwhelming to say the least. The meanings of the exercise sentences are rather vague and not easy to translate. In 3000 plus years, some Egyptian somewhere must have written a sentence or two more suitable for use in a beginning language learning text. Add to this the fact that each chapter does not have a vocabulary list to prepare the student for the exercises, and doing the chapter-end exercises becomes a futile exercise in page flipping to look up answers in the key in the back of the book. Vocabulary items used in the sample sentences in the texts in the chapters are frequently not included in the dictionary in the back. It doesn't matter how much grammar you know if you don't know what the words mean. As a college text with an instructor, this book is probably excellent, however for the do-it-yourselfer who wants to learn at home, forget it! Like the old saying goes: I just want to know what time it is, I don't need to how to build a watch. Can anybody suggest a book to learn Egyptian, written for educated, interested adults, but who don't have degree in linguistics?

5 out of 5 stars We want more of the kind..........2005-09-23

Probably the most pleasant book you will use, not just to learn about hieroglyphs, but also, to learn about ancient egyptian culture.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book...but Gardiner still worth it!!.......2004-08-01

I am writing this review simply to clarify and answer a few of the questions and comments that the previous reviewer had about the textbook.

1) This is a textbook intended for college students and self-study and assumes no previous encounter with English or Middle Egyptian grammar; therefore, as one might expect, the book presents descriptions of nouns, as well as more complicated aspects of grammar such as prospective, subjunctive and relative forms. However, if one is privy to the definitions, than one can simply skip over the descriptions of these grammatical aspects and continue learning Middle Egyptian.

2) Rare usages or unusual translations are covered in the book and although they do not appear in an appendix, they do contain astericks or other diacritics or concise descriptions.

3) Enough examples are provided so that an intelligent person can build upon previous examples and construct the answer to the exercise, similar to a math book that provides some examples and then offers more complicated, but solvable exercises.

4) Although the book does lack grammatical paradigms (mostly since no one really knows what inflections Middle Egyptian contained) and vocabulary lists, it does provide references, a sign list, a dictionary, the answers to the exercises, and an index.

5) The paperback binding is actually quite good. I have used it for a while and, although borrowed from the local library (most of those books are usually mistreated or handled periodically), it has shown little signs of deterioration. More importantly, there is at least a half inch spacial blank gap between any word or hieroglyph at the inner edge any page, making the inner edges easy to read.

6) Although the chapter four essay argues that the "Western notion of religion [...] has seperated religion from spheres of [...] government, social behavior, intellectual pursuits, and science" p.43, it never states that this is how the western notion of religion always viewed and continues to view these concepts. The Egyptian religion embraced most things as the Gods themselves. For example, two people falling in love in Greek and Roman religion was an act of Eros, and love making a gift from Aphrodite; however, an ancient Egypian might argue that two people falling in love and making love is the personification of the love between Osiris and Isis.

That said, this is a wonderful textbook that will leave any serious student or amateur the craving for more since, unfortunately, it does not cover all there is to know about Middle Egyptian. A second step would be to purchase Sir Alan Gardiner's "Egyptian Grammar" a little outdated but unmatched in depth and coverage of Middle Egyptian. His book remains the "BIBLE" of Middle Egyptian of and for most egyptologists.

4 out of 5 stars An good text book!.......2004-01-05

If you want to learn the basics of hieroglyphs. Dont buy this book first. Buy "How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A Step-By-Step Guide to Teach Yourself". Then buy the text book by Allen.

Allens book is more a book for those that seriously wants to learn the language, not good as an introduction. But as a tool to learn hieroglyphs it is excellent and very detailed.

5 out of 5 stars Great method.......2007-07-26

I have been a professional linguist in the Korean language for a long time, and I must say that through all the formal training I received, at one of the most prestigious language schools of the country, this series of books rivals that which is taught. Through very minimal "native" contact I was able to learn to read and write a seemingly impossible language. The course is paced well, and as some of the other reviewers have stated flash cards are a must. but if you are someone that is really looking to learn and understand a language then this is a really great series to go with.
My only gripe is that there is romanization (or phonetic spelling) at ALL in this series. It is a ridiculous crutch provided for lazy Americans. DO NOT rely on it for there is as of now NO standardization of pronouncing the Thai alphabet with romantic lettering. do yourself a favor if you are learning Thai, get this book, and NEVER look at the English letters.
The author has done an excellent job writing this series and it rivals that of all the professional/ academic training in the country. I wish one received college credit by just getting this book. It is THAT GOOD.

a definite must-have accompaniment to the book to start out with. I could only imagine teaching myself the sounds of tones I've never heard before without them.

3 out of 5 stars Thai for Beginners.......2007-03-09

Well, it's early days but..so far, so good! It does what it says on the tin! But when you order this book you really must order the CDs as well. I don't think you can hope to success without the CDs. It would be better if both items were advertised together.

5 out of 5 stars So far, so good.......2007-01-22

My son and I wanted to do something together that was extremely challenging and unique. After much thought we chose learning a foreign language and settled on Thai since a good friend at work is Thai and said it's the best asian language to learn. At first we tried learning from the internet from free sites, but after 2-3 weeks we knew lots of phrases and became frustrated with the alphabet and deciphering tones. We finally decided to buy a course but were limited on funds. Becker was affordable (with the additional CD).

We've made it to chapter 2 and are very pleased with the initial results. Finally, the alphabet makes sense! The book assumes you know nothing which is good. The problem with learning from websites is you can quickly become overwhelmed. Buy this book and CD! We use the web only as a supplement. For example, it is difficult to see how to write the mid consonant tone marks in the book and the book shows you how to write the mid consonants, but not the first long vowels. These are easily googled.

4 out of 5 stars Thai for Beginners with CD.......2006-11-02

I have spent about 2.5 years in Thailand since 2001, the longest being 8 months. I had tried other books and spent a brief time when I first arrived working with a teacher in Bangkok. It helped me learn basic survival phrases for taxis and food and meeting people but the true sound of the tones eluded me. I couldn't get the right tone to stick and reading it never worked. In between trips I picked up this book and the cassettes ( I later digitized them to my Mac, this was before the cd was available). If you want to learn a tonal language find something like this. It has a written component so if you get lost in grammar and learning to read helps as well. The key for me was repition. I would listen about 3 to 4 times a week for about an hour. When I returned to bangkok my friends were amazed at the improvement. Occasionally it got me into to trouble because what I spoke I spoke very clearly so people expected me to be bi-lingual. What you have to remember is that it takes time to learn a language, think ahead in terms of a year and what you can pick up.

I have worked through the beginner and intermediate books, I found the vocabulary very useful and there is much more of it at the intermediate level. I have been taking a go at Cantonese as well and I am liking the Pimsleur method. It is all verbal learning but they seem to break things down in a way that sticks. I may pick up the thai version just to compare.

4 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-09-24

Simons is certainly an environmentalist, and I love that about him. This is the first text book I have enjoyed reading. He makes excellent points, though it isn't all totally workable. Generally a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of landscape architecture.......2007-06-05

This is really THE seminal instroductory book to landscape architecture. It's not really specific enough to be a true reference book, but it covers such a vast range of topics that it would be unrealistic to expect it to be. Instead, Simonds did a fantastic job of summarizing an amazingly broad field one subject at a time. Still, it is not so broad that the reader will fail to see the trees through the forest. It does include a lot of very helpful illustrations and explanations about such topics as spatial relationships and how they create different environments (and subsequently a particular design might be appropriate or inappropriate depending on the circumstances). But that is just one small sample of the kind of valuable lessons this book is filled with. I often start with this book when I approach a subject that is new to me because it gets me on the right track. In that sense, it's not just for beginners. And the 4th edition contains much-needed updates of the outdated photographs that are in the 3rd edition.

Haven't you always wanted to have a truly encyclopedic knowledge of the absolutely revoltingly disgusting facts of life? Well, the most hilarious but well-researched facts are now available to you regarding pimples, poop, farts, burps, hairy ears, maggots, etc., thanks to Joy Masoff's Oh, Yuck! The Encyclopedia of Everything Nasty.

I can't honestly vouch for the fact that the book covered absolutely everything as the author claims, but it's really hard to imagine what she might have left out. There's some serious research presented here, along with a lot of laughs! Don't miss out on this book!

Gets them interested in reading while learning some unknown, gross facts! Recommended...even interesting for adults too!

Book Description

Although the first edition of the study appeared over seventy years ago, Gardiner's Egyptian Grammar remains the most comprehensive presentation of Middle Egyptian available, and is still an essential reference tool for all advanced work in the language. The latest, third, edition, appeared in 1957 and is now in its tenth reprinting. After each new element of grammar the learner is given a set of exercises, and the book also contains useful resources such as a list of hieroglyphic signs and information about the development of the language.

4 out of 5 stars Good Resource For Intermediate and Advanced Researchers.......2007-07-26

I found this book to be more for those with some level of linguistics background as well as a good grasp of English grammar. Have a thesaurus and dictionary handy as some archaic terms are used (this book was written in mid-20th century by a Brit).
This book is a good resource for those wanting to study the Mdr-Ntr. It should be in your library if you are serious about learning this ancient language. It can also be a primer for learning Arabic and Hebrew. The only thing this book lacks is an answer key to help you if you get stuck in some of the many exercises included within.

all i could hope for in a hopelessly erudite text being mailed to me which was ordered off the internet at a mass-market website. who knew!

5 out of 5 stars Expanding Horizons.......2006-08-18

Formerly I was mainly familiar with Hieroglyph of the Ptolemic Period and needed more information for a project. Sir Alan H. Gardiner's Text Book not only filled this needed, but increased my interest in pursuing the subject even more comprehensively than I have had before. At my age (74) this keeps my mind active and gives another purpose to my life.
I feel this volumn is well worth the cost of acquirement and is an excellent addition to my library.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Egyptian Language Resource Ever!.......2006-05-12

I think this is the ultimate textbook for any beginning, intermediate, or advanced Egyptologist because it is so detailed and thorough. I couldn't possibly wish for anything more in an Egyptian textbook. I've only read up to page 190. I have been studying Egyptian since 1996 when I first borrowed Mercer's handbook, but since I got this book just over ten weeks ago I have learned more about the Egyptian language than I ever learned before. I can't wait to finish the book.

5 out of 5 stars Gardiner's Egyptian Grammar - A Must Have.......2005-09-15

If you're truly interested in learning how to read Egyptian hieroglyphs and have already bought and read one of the many "How To" beginners books currently being published, you've no doubt realized how limited the scope of your purchase is. You've been taken to the precipice, shown the wisdom of the ages, only to find out that, just when things were getting interesting, the story ends.

Perhaps, if you've followed my misguided steps while surfing your new-found wave of enthusiasm, you further indulged your need for immediate gratification by purchasing the hefty, two-volume Egyptian dictionary set by Budge. After you've lovingly brushed off the dust and handed over your discretionary income for the next month, you realize that you're acting on impulse but rationalize your post-purchase cognitive dissonance by assuring yourself that "they wouldn't still be publishing this work after all these years if it wasn't any good, right?" Of course, a week later while cruising the net, your bubble bursts as you realize that everybody who's anybody in the world of Egyptology is warning you to "Beware of Budge".

If this in any way resembles you and your desire to learn this enigmatic language from the past still burns bright, do yourself a tremendous favor and buy this book! Yes, relative to what you've purchased so far, Gardiner's Egyptian Grammar is expensive and, unless you want to give up your next paycheck for shipping charges, it will take a week or two to arrive. I promise you, hand-on-heart, that it will be worth every pfennig of your investment and well worth the wait. After only the first couple hours (which will pass like minutes) you'll realize how very limited everything else you've read really is. After a couple weeks, you will be able to figure out for yourself why our more learned colleagues encourage us to take anything from Budge with a grain of salt.

At the time of writing this endorsement (while factual, I make no pretense of being objective), I've owned Egyptian Grammar for three months. Applying myself moderately (I have a wife, child, four cats and a day job - none of which tolerate being ignored), I've already achieved a surprising level of competence at transliteration (converting hieroglyphs into phonetic Egyptian) without need of a reference. While happy with my progress to date, I've not yet succumbed to delusions of adequacy. I still have a long path to walk and must rely heavily upon Mr. Gardiner for translating all but the simplest of passages.

As I'm sure you've already guessed, I am giving this book a five-star rating. Is Egyptian Grammar perfect? No. The wonderful thing about Egyptology is that with every passing year, we learn more about this fascinating culture. As with any material in print, there's a level of currency missing from its pages. Perhaps a more relevant question to pose would be, "Is there anything out there that I can buy that's better than this book by Gardiner?" I don't think so. If there is, it's either not currently being published or not available in English. Either way, I've yet to discover it.

4 out of 5 stars A good course with awful recordings.......2007-08-31

Teach Yourself Afrikaans is a very good course that had me flying through the pages. For a native English speaker (I'm not) Afrikaans is without any doubt the easiest language to learn. The grammar is simplicity itself, the pronunciation is easy compared to many other languages and many of the words are very similar to English ones. If you already speak German or Dutch, you'll probably manage to understand written Afrikaans without even opening this course. Afrikaans is very similar to both languages, but with a grammar that is so much simpler that it's probably the easiest of all the Indo-European languages.

This course in particular deserve a high rating for the relaxed but still competent approach it takes to Afrikaan grammar. The vocabulary is very extensive, and that is something I always look for in a language course. The one star off is for the disastrous recordings and dialouges. They are stereotypichal beyong belief. In the 21th century, I'm not really interest in reading dialouges about the happy family where father goes off to work, the well-behaved kids are pleasant all the time and mum stays home to do the housework. And all of this expressed. at. the. slowest. rate. you. have. ever. heard. If the dialouges would have been natural, this would have been a 5* course.

4 out of 5 stars Teach Yourself Afrikaans, book/CD combo........2007-06-12

This course definitely isn't lacking in content -- in vocabulary alone it provides more than most other Afrikaans self-study courses. (Note : a good number of the words used in the course aren't found in the short dictionary at the back of the book, be it either because they're loan words or because the meaning should be obvious to English speakers. Consulting an online dictionary should suffice.) Much of the grammar and word order is taught through example sentences alone for the first few units of the book, mainly to give learners a "feel" for the language. As the course progresses, grammar is steadily introduced, much of it already linking back to something already taught.

The audio accompanying the course is a must. Conversations, reading passages, and even a number of the word lists -- most of which aren't listed as being on the CDs at all -- can be found on the recorded material. The pronunciation of the language can be tricky at certain points; to provide an example, several of the nouns in the language undergo a vowel shift when they become diminutives (like turning "dog" into "doggy" : hond > hondjie), something which is reflected on the CDs but which is not covered in the text ("hond" is pronounced something like "hund", while "hondjie" is straight out "hoin-key"). The native speakers on the recordings throughout the course speak more slowly than everyday speech allows, and there are only a few passages where the rhythm is picked up to sound more authentic. This might hinder some learners, but on the other hand it can just as well be a blessing in disguise -- knowing to pronounce words correctly and enunciate clearly is the very first step to being understood.

This course is sufficient and well worth the money put toward it. If I were to give my own personal advice to a perspective buyer, though, it'd be to purchase the "Colloquial Afrikaans" course prior to moving on to this one. "Teach Yourself Afrikaans" in some respects is more exhaustive in terms of vocabulary, but the "Colloquial Afrikaans" course is easier to follow and is overall a better starting point for people just beginning studies in the language.

5 out of 5 stars Afrikaans Review.......2006-03-11

The Afrikaans learning program is well-presented and well-written. The dialogues are concise and aidful enough to allow the learner to understand the language much easily. The audio CDs is a must for the program as this is a language which requires careful listening and imitation of the sounds.
Overall, the vocab. is sufficient and the grammar tools provide a great feedback on allowing the learner to either have a thorough knowledge or the language or learn it all together.

1 out of 5 stars Get Anything Else.......2007-04-13

Reading other glowing reviews of this book made me wonder "Did I have the same text?" This book is a hopeless muddle for a beginning student of the language! Almost all other books on the market are at least organized in a manner that offers a non-intimidating approach. This specimen begins the actual instruction with section titles in Swahili, and proceeds to introduce terms that are not yet accessible to students in the chapters being studied. I'm sorry, this is the ONLY Swahili language text I could find that I would NEVER recommend for an independent learner.

4 out of 5 stars Very clear and helpful.......2007-02-07

I found this book easy to use and very clear on matters of grammar and pronunciation. The reading exercises advance at a nice pace, so you are continually challenged without being overwhelmed. I do agree with the other reviewer that more answers to the exercises would be really helpful for self-study. The dictionary section at the back is pretty thorough, though if you keep going past about the first half of the book, you will be interested in investing in a Swahili-English dictionary (probably Awde).

4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2000-03-26

This is a really wonderful book to start learning Kiswahili with. The explanations are clear and it is very attractively illustrated. My only (small) gripe is that there are no solutions for the exercises, which hampers independent study somewhat. However, this won't deter any serious student as the book does include a translation of all the dialogues,as well as all a vocabulary listing all the words used in the book. Highly recommended!
