Book Description

The Illustrated Wavelet Transform Handbook: Introductory Theory and Applications in Science, Engineering, Medicine and Finance provides an overview of the theory and practical applications of wavelet transform methods. The author uses several hundred illustrations, some in color, to convey mathematical concepts and the results of applications. The first chapter presents a brief overview of the wavelet transform, including a short history. The remainder of the book is split into two parts: the first part discusses the mathematics of both discrete and continuous wavelet transforms while the second part deals with applications in a variety of subject areas, such as geophysics, medicine, fluid turbulence, engineering testing, speech and sound analysis, image analysis, and data compression. These application chapters make the reader aware of the similarities that exist in the use of wavelet transform analysis across disciplines. A comprehensive list of more than 700 references provides a valuable resource for further study. The book is designed specifically for the applied reader in science, engineering, medicine, finance, or any other of the growing number of application areas. Newcomers to the subject will find an accessible and clear account of the theory of continuous and discrete wavelet transforms, providing a large number of examples of their use across a wide range of disciplines. Readers already acquainted with wavelets can use the book to broaden their perspective.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and informative book.......2003-09-26

This book provides a comprehensive overview of wavelet transform methodologies and applications. The emphasis is on practical applications which are illustrated with many detailed figures and examples from Science and Engineering. A particular interesting chapter on medical applications is provided. In the introductory chapters, Addison gives a clear account of the theory for both continuous and discrete wavelet transform and associated post-processing techniques. Unlike many of the other books in this area, Addison communicates the concepts with a level of detail, sufficient for the applied engineer and scientist, but without becoming bogged down in a fog of mathematical gymnastics (a feature of many of the books in this area). A welcome addition to the growing number of books on this important signal analysis technique.

Book Description

Although DSP has long been considered an EE topic, recent developments have also generated significant interest from the computer science community. DSP applications in the consumer market, such as bioinformatics, the MP3 audio format, and MPEG-based cable/satellite television have fueled a desire to understand this technology outside of hardware circles.

Designed for upper division engineering and computer science students as well as practicing engineers, Digital Signal Processing Using Matlab and Wavelets emphasizes the practical applications of signal processing. Over 100 Matlab projects and wavelet techniques provide the latest applications of DSP, including image processing, games, filters, transforms, networking, parallel processing, and sound.

The book also provides the mathematical processes and techniques needed to ensure an understanding of DSP theory. Designed to be incremental in difficulty, the book will benefit readers who are unfamiliar with complex mathematical topics or those limited in programming experience. Beginning with an introduction to Matlab programming, it moves through filters, sinusoids, sampling, the Fourier transform, the Z transform and other key topics. An entire chapter is dedicated to the discussion of wavelets and their applications. A CD-ROM (platform independent) accompanies the book and contains source code, projects, and Microsoft® PowerPoint slides.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to MatLab and DSP.......2007-07-27

This book is very readable and is chock-full of examples, sample code and explanations of DSP concepts. I think the best way to read it is to start with Chapters 1-2, which give an introduction to DSP and an overview of MatLab. Then, immediately follow this with Chapter 10, which covers applications. Subsequent chapters can be read as needed.

5 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner in this area........2007-01-24

I got it when this one is on sale at $2.99 plus shipping.
So I did not expect much from it; however, after I browsed for a while, it turned out to be one of the great books I own.
It introduces this topic in the straightforward fashion along with good examples and make everything less difficult than supposed to be.

I would recommend this book to any neophyte in this area.
Even not on-sale, only $20 can not be beaten.

Also note that everything in this edition is exactly the same as the hardcover one costing more than $100.

4 out of 5 stars tells the story well.......2007-01-14

What is impressive is how the author has told a story about wavelets, at a level that correctly communicates the mathematical essence. Where specifically the impressive achievement is that that level is for a first year undergrad. The maths discussed involves Fourier series [of course!], definite integrals, and simple matrix manipulations.

En route, she explains the Fast Fourier Transform. She credits Gauss as the original inventor, but does not mention Cooley and Tukey who independently rediscovered it, when computers were available to actually make the method practical. There's a hilarious little aside, when she does some approximations and credits this to "minor" administrative overhead. Where the humour is that universities typically charge 40% overhead on government grants! Must remember that.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Wavelets.......2007-01-03

This is an excellent introduction to wavelets and also the Fourier Transform. The first part of the book is readily accessible to almost anyone who has a passing knowledge of high school math. The second half will mostly be useful to the more mathematically sophisticated. It is an ideal kick start for any one who has the requisite knowledge and is motivated to learn more about the applications and theory behind wavelets.

It is not likely that this book will satisfy all your needs if you intend to master this subject but if you are just getting started, I would start here.

2 out of 5 stars Good effort, but no.......2006-10-07

The author of this book states in the preface that her goal is to make wavelet theory accessible to the layman, without bombarding them with "paralyzing" "funny symbols or hieroglyphics" they haven't learned yet. I thought this was a wonderful idea, as I am a layman who never made it past high school geometry with an interest in learning all about the successor to the ubiquitous FFT used in engineering. Unfortunately, while she does manage to avoid using excessive amounts of "hieroglyphics" in the first part of the book, she makes up for it by throwing around a lot of mathematical terms which are never defined for the reader, so the net result in terms of comprehension is ultimately the same as if she had used the formulae, if not worse. Ms. Hubbard will dedicate three pages worth of text to an anecdotal retelling of some conversation that took place between two researchers in front of a Xerox machine, and then suddenly throw in one line at the end of all this nonsense about integrals and coefficients, as though the preceding story somehow prepared the reader for these terms well enough to divine their meaning from one terse little sentence devoid of any contextual clues. It may be presumptuous of me, but I don't think these words mean any more than the much maligned "hieroglyphics" would to the average layman this book is meant to be read by.

On top of that, the diagrams and illustrations are horrible, looking like something that came out of a dot-matrix printer in the late 70s, and ultimately illustrating nothing.

The world desperately needs a book that actually does what this one claims to. "Who is Fourier?" certainly managed to pull it off well enough for the Fourier Transform despite being translated from Japanese, so I'm certain it's possible even if Ms. Hubbard happened to fail miserably at her task.

5 out of 5 stars Good for start.......2002-11-12

I was very happy reading this book. If you are familiar with the Fourier transform and don't know anything about wavelets, this is a book for you.

Actually, the book has got two parts. In the first part you can learn basic things about Fourier transform (about its usage but also about its limits), what we need wavelets for and what the wavelets are. It is explained in very simple language without any formulas. The second part contains basic formulas related to the topics in the first part. I find that the link between these two parts is very good. Also, the author gives physical explanation whenever it's possible.

If you are a specialist in the wavelets area, you probably know all these things but if you are new (like me!) you will find that this book is quite useful.

5 out of 5 stars It can be done!.......2002-08-18

I am a math professor,-- and I often wondered if it wouldn't be possible to get some essential math ideas accross to almost anyone, --and with fewer equations. Ideas can be burried in symbolism;-- not always! But it does happen. Many of my colleagues tell me that if it were possible, then it would be done. The author of this lovely little book didn't take math courses (she says!). Professional mathematicians would most likely agree with me that she (the author) did in fact communicate the essential ideas behind wavelets (and did it well!);- and so she must have understood them!! Perhaps, anyone who really wants to, can penetrate a specialized math discipline;-- I would guess. Perhaps it is not even hard!? At least this book proves that it is not impossible to communicate
the beauty of math;--and its uses. Take a look at the book, and judge for yourself!
    It is fun too!

    Book Description

This book surveys the application of the recently developed technique of the wavelet transform to a wide range of physical fields, including astrophysics, turbulence, meteorology, plasma physics, atomic and solid state physics, multifractals occurring in physics, biophysics (in medicine and physiology) and mathematical physics. The wavelet transform can analyze scale-dependent characteristics of a signal (or image) locally, unlike the Fourier transform, and more flexibly than the windowed Fourier transform developed by Gabor fifty years ago. The continuous wavelet transform is used mostly for analysis, but the discrete wavelet transform allows very fast compression and transmission of data and speeds up numerical calculation, and is applied, for example, in the solution of partial differential equations in physics. This book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in many fields of physics, and to applied mathematicians and engineers interested in physical application.

5 out of 5 stars Physics and wavelets........2003-02-17

The subject of wavelets is intermingled with a variety of
more traditional areas of math, and with exciting applications to physics, to engineering and to science in general. Wavelets didn't start in isolation, and even now in its maturity, surprising and deep connections to other areas continue to enrich the subject. The book contains a number of readable
tutorials and survey articles by authorities in astro physics, in turbulence[the largest number of pages are set aside for turbulence], in Navier-Stokes equations, in plasma physics, in solid state and atomic physics, in thermodynamics, in the subject of atmospherical blocking, in atom-laser interaction, mixed in with the math of multi-scale analysis, fractals, in quantum chaos, and more...The individual articles are relatively selfcontained, and the book forms a well edited unity, despite the diversity of contents. The book further serves an important purpose: Without the help of this book, it would be hard for students to extract material from the specialized journal literature. The subjects are well explained, and they are all amenable to the kind of numerical methods where wavelet algorithms excel.

    Book Description

This volume is designed as a textbook for an introductory course on wavelet analysis and time-frequency analysis aimed at graduate students or advanced undergraduates in science and engineering. It can also be used as a self-study or reference book by practicing researchers in signal analysis and related areas. Since the expected audience is not presumed to have a high level of mathematical background, much of the needed analytical machinery is developed from the beginning. The only prerequisites for the first eight chapters are matrix theory, Fourier series, and Fourier integral transforms. Each of these chapters ends with a set of straightforward exercises designed to drive home the concepts just covered, and the many graphics should further facilitate absorption.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very thorough treatment, but *not* a beginner's text........2003-07-19

A classic text *but* look at the graph on the cover very carefully because it is the only one you'll get until you reach the last chapters of the book. In terms of the presentation of the basic theorems and equations, the text is excellent ... BUT ... there is precious little to guide a student to an intuitive and practical understanding of the theory. In practice, one looks at the graphical representations of wavelets quite often -- just like the ones used for Fourier analysis (can you imagine your first Fourier analysis class with no graphs of convolution, impulses, etc? Wavelets *are* Fourier analysis taken a step further in order to handle time varying systems. Graphs are essential to the uninitiated.) In fact, it is helpful to think of wavelets (i.e., wavelet packet decompositions) as a Fourier spectrum with an additional time axis added so you can see how the spectrum changes over time. The "wavelet" method simply optimizes the resolution used at different frequencies. True, it is a little more complicated than that, but it is easy to lose sight of the simple elegance of the topic when so many equations are flung at you without intuitive context. The topic could be presented MUCH better, so don't worry that it takes a long time to get through this material. Read other basic wavelet texts first and then *definitely* come back to this one. You will appreciate its otherwise *excellent* presentation much more and the principles will be easier to put into actual practice rather than mere academic conjecture.

3 out of 5 stars A clear introduction to the notation and theory of wavelets.......2003-04-14

Some reviewers have commented that this is not such a "friendly"
guide if you are not friends with upper division or graduate
level mathematics. There is some truth to this. Unlike the
pragmatic approach taken in "Ripples in Mathematics" this is
    a mathematical coverage of wavelets.

For me the value in this book is that it provides a clear
introduction to the notation and theory behind wavelets. This
book provides the tools you need to understand the wavelet
literature better. If you are a software engineer searching
for a quick guide to wavelet algorithms, this book may disappoint.

    5 out of 5 stars Reader friendly........2002-07-10

I really did find this lovely book reader friendly! The author has succeeded in communicating the exciting subject of wavelets, and their many applications, to students and more advanced readers alike. He realized that different communities, math, computer science, engineering, and physics,--
that they have variations in their emphasis, their terminology,
and their thinking. When authors speak to the various user groups, and do it well,-- like in this case, the result is a cucess. This friendly book is!

3 out of 5 stars Good theory but lacking applications.......2000-02-04

It is not a friendly guide to Wavelets. However, chapters 1 one to six are excelent. Chapter 7, Multiresolution Analysis, the heart of the matter is hard to understand. So, you get the flavor of Wavelets but not learn to use it.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Written for broad audience of potential users!.......1999-03-17

I bought this book when I was particularly interested in continuous wavelet transforms. I found myself flying through the exposition. I felt confident about the knowledge I was acquiring and I was quickly able to apply it. Although I come at this book as a mathematician, I think that it is ideal for engineers and physical scientists who usually have far better grounding in signal processing and related issues in Fourier analysis than do mathematicians. I have recommended this book to students, friends and colleagues with high praise.

    Book Description

This applied mathematic text focuses on Fourier analysis, filters and signal analysis. Scientists and engineers are confronted by the necessity of using classical mathematics such as Fourier transforms, convolution, distribution and more recently wavelet analysis in all areas of modelling. The object of this book is two-fold - on the one hand to convey to the mathematical reader a rigorous presentation and exploration of the important applications of analysis leading to numerical calculations and on the other hand to convey to the physics reader a body of theory in which the well-known formulae find their justification. The reader will find the basic study of fundamental notions such as Lebesgue integration and theory of distribution and these permit the establishment of the following areas: Fourier analysis and convolution Filters and signal analysis time-frequency analysis (gabor transforms and wavelets) The book is aimed at engineers and scientists and contains a large number of exercises as well as selected worked out solutions. The words `Translated by Robert D Ryan' should be included in ALL promotion material regarding the book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent text for Fourier Analysis.......2002-05-23

I bought this book hoping to find a self-contained, semi-rigorous introduction to Fourier Analysis and its applications, and indeed I'm very pleased with the purchase. One aspect of the book's format that I enjoyed in a self-study setting is how it is partitioned into lessons (which are in turn divided into chapters). Indeed, it seemed that each lesson took me about 60-90 minutes to absorb, which is the average time most students (including myself) devote to one lesson.

Another aspect of the book I enjoyed was the fact that, on one hand the author took the time to introduce mathematically sophisticated ideas such as Lesbesgue measure and Hilbert spaces in order to make the proofs run more smoothly, but on the other there where more practical lessons on the fast Fourier transform, filters, and even wavelet analysis (last lesson). Such a blend of theory and practice in a relatively compact text seems quite rare.

Finally, I highly recommend this book for students of all levels; but especially to graduate students in mathematics, physics, and engineering.

    Book Description

Powerful techniques have been developed in recent years for the analysis of digital data, especially the manipulation of images. This book provides an in-depth introduction to a range of these innovative, avant-garde data-processing techniques. It develops the reader's understanding of each technique and then shows with practical examples how they can be applied to improve the skills of graduate students and researchers in astronomy, electrical engineering, physics, geophysics and medical imaging. What sets this book apart from others on the subject is the complementary blend of theory and practical application. Throughout, it is copiously illustrated with real-world examples from astronomy, electrical engineering, remote sensing and medicine. It also shows how many, more traditional, methods can be enhanced by incorporating the new wavelet and multiscale methods into the processing. For graduate students and researchers already experienced in image processing and data analysis, this book provides an indispensable guide to a wide range of exciting and original data-analysis techniques.

2 out of 5 stars This is not a five star book.......2001-06-23

I purchased this book because I am interested in applying wavelet to financial time series. The authors have written a paper in using wavelets and noise analysis to filter these time series, so I thought that this book had promise. And in fact chapter 2 deals with noise modeling and noise filtering.

The only problem is that I found this material impossible to follow. Despite the claims that the book is aimed at applications, there are few real examples. In the case of noise modeling and noise filtering there are none. It was impossible for me to tell whether the techniques they seem to suggest work or how they can be applied.

I've become fairly expert on Haar wavelets. Even so I can read their explaination of the Haar wavelet transform only with difficulty.

The authors give the impression that they are academics writing for academics (at the post graduate level). The book provides equations as quick short hand for ideas and the reader is expected to fill in the blanks. Perhaps a post graduate background in math is needed. However I would not say that the publishers description properly reflects the contents of this book: "[the book] develops the reader's undersanding of each technique and then shows with practical examples how they can be applied to improve the skills of [...] electrical engineers." Real world applications are mentioned, but never fully explained.

All in all I found this book an expensive disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars A good, practical book on image processing.......2000-08-30

From my persepective I consider this book a bargain. The price is right and I certainly got my nickels worth reading it.

I am heavily into 2-D wavelet analysis of remote sensing imagery. My initial, naive foray into this topic was a very frustrating experience. Most wavelet books do not cover multidimensional applications well or at all. In fact, most wavelet books are inordinately concerned with the mathematical nuances of the subject and pay little attention to the mechanics of implementing the theory. So all wavelet books read pretty much the same and there is usually nothing new or insightful from one text to another.

Starck et al is the exception. It has the only clear exposition of 2-D non-separable and a trous wavelet methods that I have found anywhere. The book has been a time saver for me and not a time waster, and well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, easy to read.......1999-04-04

This book appeared very easy to read and is an excellent resource of multiscale techniques. The practical applications that are discussed in this book combined with the theory, give a good overview.
