Book Description

Magnetic fields are routinely used in industry to heat, pump, stir and levitate liquid metals. There is the terrestrial magnetic field that is maintained by fluid motion in the earth's core, the solar magnetic field, which generates sunspots and solar flares, and the galactic field that influences the formation of stars. This introductory text on magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) (the study of the interaction of magnetic fields and conducting fluids) is intended to serve as an introductory text for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in physics, applied mathematics and engineering. The material in the text is heavily weighted toward incompressible flows and to terrestrial (as distinct from astrophysical) applications. The final sections of the text, which outline the latest advances in the metallurgical applications of MHD, make the book of interest to professional researchers in applied mathematics, engineering and metallurgy.

Book Description

First published in 1967, Professor Batchelor's classic work is still one of the foremost texts on fluid dynamics. His careful presentation of the underlying theories of fluids is still timely and applicable, even in these days of almost limitless computer power. This reissue ensures that a new generation of graduate students experiences the elegance of Professor Batchelor's writing.

3 out of 5 stars Fair introduction.......2004-01-04

Good introduction of many ideas in fluid mechanics. Good for reference, but it is not a good book for learning the subject. If in fact you happen to have a solid math background you may find it very boring but still has many references to more useful sources.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction.......2003-07-19

This book introduces lots of stuffs. I will consider it
as reference purpose. Not that good for learning, especially
for beginners. If one has another book as textbook already,
with this book, he can have more comprehensive thinkings
about fluid dynamics. It's a good book right on from
textbooks to special-purposed books.

4 out of 5 stars Great "introduction" to those well-versed in the subject.......2003-03-16

If you get through this text, you are on your way to fluid dynamics mastery. It covers much more than most engineering students will need (or care to) know. It is an important text, but should be a complementary study aid.

5 out of 5 stars The best introduction.......2003-03-01

I used Batchelor several years ago for an introductory course in fluid dynamics for physic students, and found it generally satisfactory. It is probably the best available overall introduction. The negative review from the Berkeley student reflects more upon the student than upon the book, in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars To the Berkeley graduate student below.......2002-12-20

Although I do think that the book is over-rated, your critique is unfair. First, the book is not too advanced. Similar materials are used to teach university students in their 3rd or 4th year of studies, sometimes even earlier, in many countries. If you are not able to grasp the basic, how are you going to read the current papers in journals? How are you going to contribute new knowledge? It's better to start early with a young mind. Then, it is not a reference book (I don't need to say more in this). Also, you may be in the wrong course, or your professor suggested an unsuitable, but not necessarily bad, book for reading. The book was written with applied mathematics (you can surf around the net and see what applied mathematics means in the UK) courses in mind. You may find Lighthill's 'An informal introduction to theoretical fluid mechanics' or Tritton's 'Physical fluid dynamics' or Faber's 'Fluid dynamics for physicists' useful. Finally, I have confidence in the ability of a Berkeley student. You maybe smart, but you need to work hard too, very hard!

Book Description

The only one of its kind devoted entirely to the subject, Large Eddy Simulation presents a comprehensive account and a unified view of this young but very rich discipline. LES is the only efficient technique for approaching high Reynolds numbers when simulating industrial, natural or experimental configurations. The author concentrates on incompressible fluids and chooses topics well to treat both the mathematical ideas and the applications with care. The book addresses researchers as well as graduate students and engineers. The second edition was a greatly enriched version motivated both by the increasing theoretical interest in LES and the increasing number of applications. Two entirely new chapters were devoted to the coupling of LES with multiresolution multidomain techniques and to the new hybrid approaches that relate the LES procedures to the classical statistical methods based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations.

This 3rd edition adds various sections to the text like a careful error analysis, on filtered density function models and multiscale models. It also contains two new chapters on the prediction of scalars using LES which are of considerable interest for engineering and geophysical modeling. The part on geophysical flow has much to offer on a critical current issue.

This book presents the current status of Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) and is invaluable for anyone working on the field.

The author presents all relevant subgrid scale models, the theoretical basis of the method, lessons from practical cases, etc

It is no accident that this is the 3rd revision in 4 years, collecting forewords from leading theoreticians along the way: Germano, Lesieur and Meneveau.

Book Description

The goal of this text is to present some of the basic ideas of fluid mechanics in a mathematically attractive manner, to present the physical background and motivation for some constructions that have been used in recent mathematical and numerical work on the Navier-Stokes equations and on hyperbolic systems, and to interest some of the students in this beautiful and difficult subject. The third edition has incorporated a number of updates and revisions, but the spirit and scope of the original book are unaltered.

2 out of 5 stars Stay away from this.......2002-01-18

I've taken a 3rd year undergraduate fluid mechanics course and we've used this as our textbook. It was a complete disaster. Let me start by saying this book pays absolutely no respect to its readers - it's filled not only with typos (and lots of them!) but also with very flimsy arguments. Now, whenever I do not understand an argument I usually think that I did not get it, or perhaps I do not understand the material enough, or that I simply have to fill in the gaps - but in this book, there are no gaps, the arguments are just lousy. Some steps even seem to be wrong, and I say that after debating them for a long while with my friends. I strongly recommend you eye this book with great suspicion.

5 out of 5 stars A clean and fast presenation of fluid mechanics........1998-01-25

An ideal book for the applied mathematician and mathematical physicist. This little text is deceptive in scope, covering the constitutive equations of motion, vorticity, and up through problems in gas dynamics. The book is also quite appropriate for self study, even more beneficial if studied in conjunction with G.K. Batchelor's classic text "An Introduction to Fluid Dynamics" for additional physical insight. Overall Marsden and Chorin have developed a classic introductory text.

5 out of 5 stars Here's hoping for a third edition of this great text!.......2001-06-30

This is the book you want if you need to solve real compressible flow problems. It covers all the basics plus there's tons of advanced materials. I especially like the fact that there are numerous detailed examples and coding templates. In addition, the book contains a very extensive reference, allowing the reader to go back to the orginal papers.

5 out of 5 stars Post Graduate Compressible flow.......2000-12-18

Have to agree with Mark, this book is quite superb. Professor Toro does a superb job - it took me from knowing nothing about shock capture to being able to write my own high resolution code in about six months. Coupled with the Numerica software it is an invaluable tool for learning about compressible flow.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding text or reference for graduate level CFD!.......1998-12-01

By far the best computational fluid dynamics text I have come across during my thesis research! The author presents modern shock-capturing numerical methods for solving the time-dependent hyperbolic conservation laws in multiple dimensions with exceptional clarity. Most of the text focuses on Godunov methods and is littered with practical applications and discussions for those with a limited background in CFD. In addition, Toro presents a simpler interpretation of his WAF method. In terms of readability, I found this book to be far superior. It will undoubtedly become as indispensible in the CFD field as those by Fletcher, Hirsch and LeVeque!

        Book Description

Aimed at graduate students, researchers and academics in mathematics, engineering, oceanography, meteorology, and mechanics, this text provides a detailed introduction to the physical theory of rotating fluids, a significant part of geophysical fluid dynamics. The text is divided into four
parts, with the first part providing the physical background of the geophysical models to be analyzed. Part two is devoted to a self contained proof of the existence of weak (or strong) solutions to the imcompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Part three deals with the rapidly rotating
Navier-Stokes equations, first in the whole space, where dispersion effects are considered. The case where the domain has periodic boundary conditions is then analyzed, and finally rotating Navier-Stokes equations between two plates are studied, both in the case of periodic horizontal coordinated
and those in R2. In Part IV, the stability of Ekman boundary layers and boundary layer effects in magnetohydrodynamics and quasigeostrophic equations are discussed. The boundary layers which appear near vertical walls are presented and formally linked with the classical Prandlt equations. Finally
spherical layers are introduced, whose study is completely open.

In this translation of the German edition, the authors provide insight into the numerical simulation of fluid flow. Using a simple numerical method as an expository example, the individual steps of scientific computing are presented: the derivation of the mathematical model; the discretization of the model equations; the development of algorithms; parallelization; and visualization of the computed data. In addition to the treatment of the basic equations for modeling laminar, transient flow of viscous, incompressible fluids - the Navier-Stokes equations - the authors look at the simulation of free surface flows; energy and chemical transport; and turbulence. Readers are enabled to write their own flow simulation program from scratch. The variety of applications is shown in several simulation results, including 92 black-and-white and 18 color illustrations. After reading this book, readers should be able to understand more enhanced algorithms of computational fluid dynamics and apply their new knowledge to other scientific fields.

4 out of 5 stars Good for practical introduction on how to develop your code.......2006-06-03

I found this a very good book in terms of developing your own code.
It is not extremely detailed in terms of all the methods exsisting in computational fluid dynamics, but it gives you those information that for a beginner might be hard to find. Good practical exemples of STAGGERED Grid discretization and a detail explanation on the development of a N-S solver also for FREE SURFACE problems.
Practical things as writing a makefile or how to set your code environment are explained aside of the mathematical analysis of the numerical methods involved.
I highly reccommend this book to those who studies the subject but never put into practice that knowledge.
The practical computations are specifically described for C-programming.

5 out of 5 stars Very good Introductory book.......2005-03-01

This is a very good introductory book to Computational Fluid Dynamics. It teaches you the way to implement your first code in CFD. Using the MAC (March and Cell) method. It has codes in C, but can be adapted to Fortran very easily.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Book With Basic Information.......2000-03-25

This book is very good for those who have background in Mathematics and are beginning to work with Numerical Simulations in Fluid Dynamics. It gives the mathematical introduction to beginners and contains program excerpts that may help in programming.

          Book Description

Fluid Physics in Geology is aimed at geology students who are interested in understanding fluid behavior and motion in the context of a wide variety of geological problems, and who wish to pursue related work in fluid physics. The book provides an introductory treatment of the physical and dynamical behaviors of fluids by focusing first on how fluids behave in a general way, then looking more specifically at how they are involved in certain geological processes. The text is written so students may concentrate on the sections that are most relevant to their own needs. Helpful problems following each chapter illustrate applications of the material to realistic problems involving groundwater flows, magma dynamics, open-channel flows, and thermal convection. Fluid Physics in Geology is ideal for graduate courses in all areas of geology, including hydrology, geomorphology, sedimentology, and petrology.
