4 out of 5 stars Good book........2005-08-15

This book was the assigned reading material for my engineering technology course. Its primary purpose was to give us an `introduction' to fluid related concepts, and in that area I would say it was very successful. This books writing style is extremely easy to follow, and unlike some of my other textbooks was actually enjoyable to read. It provided step by step instructions on how to solve problems, and also offered more than enough problems for the students to solve themselves. The only issue I have with this book relates to the rather limited examples it provides. In its solutions it illustrates how to solve the simple problems, but negates to do the more complicated ones which sometimes left me clueless on how to proceed. This book is also rather expansive and does not go very deep into the subject.. If your looking for a good introduction book for your course, or some extra learning material this is a great choice. If you're a more advanced reader, I suggest you look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Don't adapt for your course.......2004-06-03

The book is very shallow and not worth considering for any engineering or any technical degree. it might be good for high school level pre-engineering classes, but difinetly not at college or university level.

5 out of 5 stars Bob Mott knows how to teach........1999-12-28

This is a great text for technology based fluid mechanics. To elementary for an engineering student, but then it was meant for an engineering technology student. I find it easy to use. My students love it. There are few, if any, technology based fluid mechanics texts available of this caliber. I only wish it were less expensive.

5 out of 5 stars Best text I've had the pleasure to read, helpful examples.......1999-05-16

I am the type of person who generally hates the way that texts are written. I have always said, that if I were to write a text, it would be this way. The whole class talks about this book, we love it at at the University here.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad text, but..........2005-12-31

The approach in this book is a lot different than that which engineering students will learn in their Physics classes. This book uses a lot of calculus once you get past chapter seven, so make sure you have taken at LEAST up to Calculus III before you embark on the wonderous journey of attempting to understand shear and moment diagrams.

And there's a sufficient number of errors in the chapter two, three, and I think chapter six solutions. Make sure you ask your professor about them.

Not too terribly hard to get through, though. If you're studious and intelligent, you'll be fine.

Book Description

Instability of flows and their transition to turbulence are widespread phenomena in engineering and the natural environment. They are important in applied mathematics, astrophysics, biology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, physics, and engineering. This is a graduate-level textbook to introduce these phenomena by modeling them mathematically, and describing numerical simulations and laboratory experiments. The visualization of instabilities is emphasized with many figures. Many worked examples and exercises for students illustrate the ideas of the text. Readers are assumed to be fluent in linear algebra, advanced calculus, elementary theory of ordinary differntial equations, complex variable and the elements of fluid mechanics. The book is aimed at graduate students, but is very useful for specialists in other fields.

2 out of 5 stars Good topics, but see his other books.......2003-09-30

Drazin was an excellent writer (see Hydrodynamic Stability and Nonlinear Systems), but this book felt very disorganized to me, possibly because he passed away shortly before it's release.

The concept is very good: how do we get from instability to full-fleged turbulence, and are we even ready to answer the question? He gives a good explanation of the stability of ODEs, and follows this with a discussion of the standard linear hydrodynamic stability problems (Kelvin-Helmholtz, Rayleigh-Bénard, etc.). It ends with a discussion of the transition to turbulence.

But the problem is that he has already treated most of these topics in his other books, and the earlier treatments were nearly identical in many respects, or they were just plain better. Even regarding the new material on transition to turbulence, I feel that it did not serve to unify the earlier topics as it should have.

Some further editing may have greatly improved this book and better underscored the overlying theme, but as it stands I feel that one is better off spending their time on his other books.

Book Description

An ideal text for graduate level courses in transport phenomena for chemical engineers, Analysis of Transport Phenomena provides a unified treatment of momentum, heat, and mass transfer, emphasizing the concepts and analytical techniques that apply to all of these transport processes. The first few chapters establish the tools needed for later analyses while also covering heat and mass transfer in stationary media. The similarities among the molecular or diffusive transport mechanisms--heat conduction, diffusion of chemical species, and viscous transfer of momentum--are highlighted. Conservation equations for scalar quantites are derived first in general form, and then used to obtain the governing equations for total mass, energy, and chemical species. The scaling and order-of-magnitude concepts which are crucial in modeling are also introduced. Certain key methods for solving the differential equations in transport problems, including similarity, perturbation, and finite Fourier transform techniques, are described using conduction and diffusion problems as examples. Following chapters are devoted to fluid mechanics, beginning with fundamental equations for momentum transfer and then discussing unidirectional flow, nearly unidirectional (lubrication) flow, creeping flow, and laminar boundary layer flow. Forced-convection heat and mass transfer in laminar flow, multicomponent energy and mass transfer, free convection, and turbulence are also covered. The appendix summarizes vector and tensor operations and relations involving various coordinate systems. Based on twenty years of teaching and extensive class testing, Analysis of Transport Phenomena offers students both extensive coverage of the topic and inclusion of modern examples from bioengineering, membrane science, and materials processing. It is mathematically self-contained and is also unique in its treatment of scaling and approximation techniques and its presentation of the finite Fourier transform method for solving partial differential equations.

5 out of 5 stars Good grad level text.......2007-04-30

Very good graduate level text. Not an introductory text. Like some of the other reviews say, the author does not spend much time with the basics, however if that is what you are after, look at B-S-L Transport Phenomena.

3 out of 5 stars Profound insight, omits mundane and essential details/steps.......2007-03-26

This book, so far, is well organized and provides a most excellent approach to transport phenomena. The author evidently has a deep understanding of the topic.

On the negative side, this book could do with some revising. Example problems should have a better "ansatz," that is, a more clearly-defined starting point for the analysis of problems in transport (i.e. should we consider balance and constitutive equations simultaneous at the start of every problem?). When working out Example problems, equations throughout the chapter do not seem to be invoked in any order, so it can be hard to follow the author's train of thought. Another problem which cost me a couple hours of hard "figuring" was trying to determine the motivation for stating "C[A]" as evaluated at "L" (see p. 51-52). To summarize, much of the student's understanding of the subject is taken for granted (perhaps to be expected, since this is a graduate-level text on the subject).

I agree with the review that says this book would be invaluable for research and obtaining a deep understanding of transport phenomena. This book would be perfect if the basic principles of transport phenomena were repeatedly touched upon (one example is the the equations on p. 4, which are mentioned once and used without citation or warning in several examples) for the first few chapters (and THEN steps could be skipped and the reader's knowledge can be taken for granted). Then, anyone with enough mathematical aptitude could obtain a very deep understanding of transport phenomena by reading this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good 1st transport book for grads.......2005-04-22

I got so involved with this book that I virtually wrote notes on every single page. The amount of useful information in this book has exceeded the tolerance the binding has for my handling. And I even took good care of it too! After my organic chemistry text, I'd say that I spent more time with this book than any other on my shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Briliant!!.......2004-02-08

This book is well organized, well detailed, and well articulated. The lessons are useful and the text approachable for an academic work. I've read / had to use many other textbooks in my pursuit of a chemical engineering education and this is the best. I give it a whole-hearted recommendation for any serious student.

2 out of 5 stars I heart this book.......2003-11-20

This book would be better if the author didnt have a tendancy to leave steps out of most his examples. Problems at the end of the chapters can be really difficult. I highly suggest using another book, or atleast having a good undergraduate text to supplement this one.

    Book Description

Magnetic fields are routinely used in industry to heat, pump, stir and levitate liquid metals. There is the terrestrial magnetic field that is maintained by fluid motion in the earth's core, the solar magnetic field, which generates sunspots and solar flares, and the galactic field that influences the formation of stars. This introductory text on magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) (the study of the interaction of magnetic fields and conducting fluids) is intended to serve as an introductory text for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in physics, applied mathematics and engineering. The material in the text is heavily weighted toward incompressible flows and to terrestrial (as distinct from astrophysical) applications. The final sections of the text, which outline the latest advances in the metallurgical applications of MHD, make the book of interest to professional researchers in applied mathematics, engineering and metallurgy.

4 out of 5 stars Good source of solved problems in fluid mechanics.......2006-02-18

I am not a mechanical engineer. Instead, I am an electrical engineer who took an undergraduate fluid mechanics class last fall to help with some graphical simulation work I was doing. However, I still had to pass the same examinations and do the same homework as the other students who did have a mechanical engineering background, and I found this outline immensely helpful. This book is an excellent source of problem-solving techniques and exercises for anyone who is taking an undergraduate course in fluid mechanics, which is the branch of science concerned with how fluids behave at rest or in motion. This outline assumes that you are already familiar with statics and with calculus, and it makes heavy use of both subjects. There is not a lot of verbal explanation in this outline. Explanation is done mainly through the introduction of some formulas, and then some completely worked out examples using those formulas. It is not at all dry in its presentation, however, and makes heavy and appropriate use of instructive figures and diagrams. Fluid mechanics is about solving problems, and the most difficult part is analyzing the system and reducing it to a series of equations. Once this has been achieved there are a number of standard methods that can be used to solve them. This book gives a good amount of practice at allowing the student to figure out how to approach larger problems in chapters 8 through 10 - "Flow in Closed Conduits", "Complex Pipeline Systems", and "Flow in Open Channels", and also in the final chapter of the outline "Fluid Machinery". This book is a great companion to Munson's "Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics", which is the best textbook on the subject that I have encountered.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended for Reference/Overview.......2000-06-23

Like all of the Schaum guides for subjects in Mechanical Engineering, this outline provides a good overview of fluid mechanics, but it doesn't go into a great deal of depth. It's easy to find the equations if you want to use the book as a reference manual or a study guide, and the problems can serve as a good supplement to an undergraduate class in Fluids.

This handbook provides a summary of theoretical, experimental, and statistical data on fluid flows. The text makes extensive use of tables and graphics so that engineers, students, and researchers can rapidly locate accurate and up-to-date data. The emphasis is on applied fluid dynamics, in particular practical problems such as fluid dynamic drag, pipe and duct flow, and nozzles and diffusers, which have direct practical applications.

Book was well worth the money. Compariable in price to any academic text. I bought it new, which is a reprint of the classic Blevins text. It doesn't come with any dust cover. I was looking for pipe & fitting loss calculations, which it goes over extensively. Serves as a good guide for actual engineering, since it contains a good balance of theory, design guidelines, and applied data from experimentation on most fluid mechanics type problems.

This book is an excellent and exhaustive treatment of the engineering aspects of fluid flow in pipes, through components, and in open channel situations, not to mention nearly every other situation that a mechanical engineer might encounter. As an engineer with fluids and thermal system design experience, I highly recommend this work to anyone in this field. Especially useful are the exhaustive tables of K - values for nearly every imaginable component, including partially open valves, screens, and almost every imaginable type of pipe. This book is well worth the price.

    Book Description

First published in 1967, Professor Batchelor's classic work is still one of the foremost texts on fluid dynamics. His careful presentation of the underlying theories of fluids is still timely and applicable, even in these days of almost limitless computer power. This reissue ensures that a new generation of graduate students experiences the elegance of Professor Batchelor's writing.

    3 out of 5 stars Fair introduction.......2004-01-04

Good introduction of many ideas in fluid mechanics. Good for reference, but it is not a good book for learning the subject. If in fact you happen to have a solid math background you may find it very boring but still has many references to more useful sources.

    4 out of 5 stars Good introduction.......2003-07-19

This book introduces lots of stuffs. I will consider it
as reference purpose. Not that good for learning, especially
for beginners. If one has another book as textbook already,
with this book, he can have more comprehensive thinkings
about fluid dynamics. It's a good book right on from
    textbooks to special-purposed books.

4 out of 5 stars Great "introduction" to those well-versed in the subject.......2003-03-16

If you get through this text, you are on your way to fluid dynamics mastery. It covers much more than most engineering students will need (or care to) know. It is an important text, but should be a complementary study aid.

5 out of 5 stars The best introduction.......2003-03-01

I used Batchelor several years ago for an introductory course in fluid dynamics for physic students, and found it generally satisfactory. It is probably the best available overall introduction. The negative review from the Berkeley student reflects more upon the student than upon the book, in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars To the Berkeley graduate student below.......2002-12-20

Although I do think that the book is over-rated, your critique is unfair. First, the book is not too advanced. Similar materials are used to teach university students in their 3rd or 4th year of studies, sometimes even earlier, in many countries. If you are not able to grasp the basic, how are you going to read the current papers in journals? How are you going to contribute new knowledge? It's better to start early with a young mind. Then, it is not a reference book (I don't need to say more in this). Also, you may be in the wrong course, or your professor suggested an unsuitable, but not necessarily bad, book for reading. The book was written with applied mathematics (you can surf around the net and see what applied mathematics means in the UK) courses in mind. You may find Lighthill's 'An informal introduction to theoretical fluid mechanics' or Tritton's 'Physical fluid dynamics' or Faber's 'Fluid dynamics for physicists' useful. Finally, I have confidence in the ability of a Berkeley student. You maybe smart, but you need to work hard too, very hard!

      Book Description

How can an airplane weighing many tons stay aloft for many hours, flying so smoothly that the passengers may feel less like they are moving than they would in a car? The answer, of course, lies in the wings and the air they are moving through, and the study of the flow of air around airplane wings is part of the science of aerodynamics. This book is about aerodynamics in the broadest sense. In addition to airplanes, it discusses the aerodynamics of cars and birds, and the motion of diverse object thorugh air and water. The fundamental notions of mechanics and fluid dynamics -- that is, the basic physics underlying aerodynamics -- are clearly explained. The underlying science is discussed rigorously, but only elementary mathematics is used, and only occasionally. To put the science into its human context, the author describes (with many illustrations) the history of human attempts to fly and discusses the social impact of commercial aviation as well as the outlook for future developments. This book is addressed primarily to readers whose background is not in physics or engineering. It will deepen their knowledge of these fields and add to their appreciation of some exciting recent developements in technology. This new edition has been brought up to date throughout; solutions to selected exercises have been added, as well as new problems and other study aids.
