Book Description

This extensively revised and expanded third edition of the Artech House bestseller, Computational Electrodynamics: The Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method, offers you the most up-to-date and definitive resource on this critical method for solving Maxwell's equations. There has been considerable advancement in FDTD computational technology over the past few years, and this new edition brings you the very latest details with four new invited chapters on advanced techniques for PSTD, unconditional stability, provably stable FDTD-FETD hybrids, and hardware acceleration. Moreover, you find many completely new sections throughout the book, including major updates on convolutional PML ABCs; dispersive, nonlinear, classical-gain, and quantum-gain materials; and micro-, nano-, and bio- photonics.

This single resource provides complete guidance on FDTD techniques and applications, from basic concepts, to the current state-of-the-art. It enables you to more efficiently and effectively design and analyze key electronics and photonics technologies, including wireless communications devices, high-speed digital and microwave circuits, and integrated optics. You find sample FDTD codes written in Matlab® that serve as a self-guided refresher, and examples of how to use the FDTD method on a wide range of projects in the field. What's more, to supplement the third edition, the authors and publisher have created a Website where you can find solutions to the problems, sample FDTD PML codes, text updates/errata, and downloadable color graphics and videos. Consequently, this new edition is the ideal textbook for both a senior-year undergraduate elective course and a graduate course in computational electrodynamics.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant textbook on computational EM.......2007-02-04

This is THE STANDARD reference on FDTD methods in computational electrodynamics. Moreover, even if time-domain is not your main thing but you still work with computational EM, add this to your library. It is wonderfully written, simultaneously easy to read and deeply comprehensive. You can get your own codes going by reading this book. After applying the things you learn here you will have a renewed inspiration in Maxwell's equations and E&M.

5 out of 5 stars The book for FDTD.......2005-11-09

This book is an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable reference/tutorial. The book is suitable for use in an advanced undergraduate/first-year graduate class with a prerequisite of one semester of undergraduate E&M. (The authors' preface indicates that this prerequisite is not entirely necessary, but I don't see how you could understand what is going on without it.)

The book can also be used for self-study. In this vein, the book's website contains 1d-, 2d-, and 3d-matlab scripts that are excellent for learning how to actually implement all of this stuff. The third edition weighs in at just over 1000 pages with a price tag of $139, which is $10 cheaper than the 2nd edition was when it came out.

Allen Taflove is, perhaps, the leader in the development and use of this technique. Allen is now at Northwestern. Susan Hagness was a recent PhD student of his (1998) and is now an associate professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at the University of Wisconsin. The authors are at the forefront in the development of applications.

The third edition is significantly larger than the 2nd edition and includes several applications chapters that were cowritten with the major researchers in the field. The extraordinary explosion of application areas for FDTD is captured in the later chapters, and these chapters give students and new researchers a clear flavor of the vitality and interest in the field which extends from the detection of breast cancer to ELF pulses produced by earthquakes. It is refreshing to find authors who so readily give credit to others in their field. Taflove and Hagness have been very gracious in this regard, and as a consequence have a much better book and a very detailed and useful bibliography.

I very heartily recommend this book to anyone who wishes to use FDTD techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Agree with Prior Reviewer.......2002-09-21

I cannot quite honestly give this book (*first* edition, not second) a full five-point-zero stars because it somewhat comes apart the closer one gets to the final chapters. I read this book a few years ago, so I apologize for lack of specificity. However, I completely agree with the prior reviewer who stated that this book is better than Kunz's and Luebbers' book, which I appears to be a slightly edited compilation of previous publications --- even if that is completely untrue. In fact, in my opinion, Taflove's book (again, first edition) is a *much* better textbook than Kunz and Luebbers.

The Book News review is somewhat misleading. Taflove derives the difference equations in full, painstaking detail. (Perhaps the Book News reviewer fell asleep during that portion.) For me, this was the most valuable and educational portion of the book. Example applications have their place, but only after understanding the basic principles. Taflove did an excellent job in describing these principles, which go far beyond the basic Yee algorithm (e.g. extrapolation techniques and incorporation of BC's). Those readers familiar with other FD books should understand what I'm saying here: Anyone who reads this book and understands it will not only be conversant about FDTD but should also be able to write solid working codes. With the K&L book, this is very questionable.

5 out of 5 stars A good overview of FD-TD method.......2000-05-25

A good intro book for the FD-TD method with many applications. The list of references at the end of each chapter is also very useful. Some of the material is now outdated and needs corrections, but otherwise a great reference for CEM. I would recommend this book over the Kunz & Luebbers FD-TD book.

    Book Description

Nonlinear Interactions provides a coherent and unified treatment of analytical, computational, and experimental methods and concepts of modal interactions. This book is an obvious extension of Ali Nayfeh's well-known book Applied Nonlinear Dynamics (with Bala Balachandran). These methods are used to explore and unfold in a unified manner the fascinating complexities in nonlinear dynamical systems. The systems discussed are drawn from fluid mechanics and structural dynamics.

Nonlinear interactions between high-frequency and low-frequency modes are of great practical importance. Through the mechanisms discussed in this book, energy from high-frequency sources can be transferred to the low-frequency modes of supporting structures and foundations, and the result can be harmful large-amplitude oscillations that decrease their fatigue lives. On the other hand, these mechanisms can be exploited to transfer the energy from a system to a sacrificial subsystem and hence decrease considerably the vibrations of the main system and increase its fatigue life.

3 out of 5 stars Up to date but not much better than other texts.......2004-06-27

I read this book to learn more about my field of study; computational materials science. I found it thorough; it covered all the major aspects for modelling of condensed phases at the atomic scale: Monte Carlo, Moleculary Dynamics, statistical thermo, and ab initio methods.

The strong point of this book compared to others on the same subject is that the amount of space devoted to the various subjects closely corresponds to the amount of work done in those subjects. Therefore, a lot of space is spent on empirical and semi-empirical methods.

Density functional theory, which is the workhorse of today's high-end simulations, gets shorted here. Only a couple of pages are spent on it. This contrasts strongly with other books on the same subject, like the books by Raabe, or Catlow, or Finnis, where DFT gets at least a whole chapter to itself.

Likewise, there is not much on electronic structure. There are a fair number of examples in this book, but few are simple enough for the first-timer to follow. The examples tend to show of the abilities of simulations; and not the nuts and bolts of how to do them.

As such, this book is great for an introductory course on computer simulations of materials; assuming the reader has a background in materials science. It is not a good book for a course on DFT, computational quantum mechanics, or solid state calculations.

5 out of 5 stars The Best MODERN treatment: Concise, yet Thorough.......2004-04-01

With an exponentially growing computational power, more precise and exact treatments of problems of condensed matter physics become affordable, and the dark corners of material science become clearly understandable. At the same time, new methods are becoming developed, that allow for better treatments of various kinds of problems in this field.

This book is a gem, written by three active frontiers on this subject and can be of great value to anyone doing computations in material science. An almost complete and up to date review of the methods used in this field with great lists of references for further studies.

In addition to the workers in this field, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what happens in the Material Science today.

    Book Description

This much-anticipated second edition introduces the fundamentals of the finite element method featuring clear-cut examples and an applications-oriented approach. Using the transport equation for heat transfer as the foundation for the governing equations, this new edition demonstrates the versatility of the method for a wide range of applications, including structural analysis and fluid flow.

Much attention is given to the development of the discrete set of algebraic equations, beginning with simple one-dimensional problems that can be solved by inspection, continuing to two- and three-dimensional elements, and ending with three chapters describing applications. The increased number of example problems per chapter helps build an understanding of the method to define and organize required initial and boundary condition data for specific problems. In addition to exercises that can be worked out manually, this new edition refers to user-friendly computer codes for solving one-, two-, and three-dimensional problems. Among the first FEM textbooks to include finite element software, the book contains a website with access to an even more comprehensive list of finite element software written in FEMLAB, MAPLE, MathCad, MATLAB, FORTRAN, C++, and JAVA - the most popular programming languages.

This textbook is valuable for senior level undergraduates in mechanical, aeronautical, electrical, chemical, and civil engineering. Useful for short courses and home-study learning, the book can also serve as an introduction for first-year graduate students new to finite element coursework and as a refresher for industry professionals. The book is a perfect lead-in to Intermediate Finite Element Method: Fluid Flow and Heat and Transfer Applications (Taylor & Francis, 1999, Hb 1560323094).

      Book Description

This book discusses the computational approach in modern statistical physics in a clear yet accessible way, and works out its intimate relations with other approaches in theoretical physics. Individual chapters focus on subjects as diverse as the hard sphere liquid, classical spin models, single quantum particles and Bose-Einstein condensation. They contain in-depth discussions of algorithms ranging from basic enumeration methods to modern Monte Carlo techniques. The emphasis is on orientation. Discussions of implementation details are kept to a minimum. The book heavily relies on illustrations, tables and concise printed algorithms to convey key information: all the material remains easily accessible. The book is fully self-contained: graphs and tables can be readily reproduced by programming at most a few dozen lines of computer code. Most sections lead from an elementary discussion to the rich and difficult problems of contemporary computational and statistical physics, and will be of interest to a wide range of students, teachers and researchers in physics and the neighboring sciences. An accompanying CD allows to incorporate the layout material (illustrations, tables, schematic programs) into the reader's own presentations.

      Book Description

This introduction to computational fluid dynamics serves as a unique advanced-undergraduate text that brings together Cebeci's lifelong experience as a teacher at the University of California and a senior scientist for Boeing Company. Conservation equations for compressible and incompressible flows are the prime theme. The text concentrates on finite difference and finite volume methods and mostly treats two-dimensional flows, while it also keeps key arguments general enough to apply to the three-dimensional case as well. It also provides methods for solving model parabolic, elliptic and hyperbolic equations, and two chapters address boundary-layer equations. The treatment of the transition from laminar to turbulent flow makes use of the e n method. Further topics are grid generation methods and extensive discussions of the Euler and the Navier-Stokes equations. The book is accompanied by a CD including computer programs that have been tested in many practical applications in industrial fluid mechanics engineering.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but beware..........2007-03-03

This is a well written book. The only problem I have with it is that it has a misleading title: Computational Fluid Dynamics for Engineers: From Panel to Navier-Stokes Methods WITH COMPUTER PROGRAMS. While the book does come with SOME computer programs (ie, FORTRAN source), there are many chapters that don't contain the source code with the included CD. This is pretty bad, especially if you'd like to write your own code. At first I thought that the publisher somehow forgot to write some of the files to the CD, so I contacted one the authors asking if he could send me some of the missing source files. It turns out that I would have to pay an extra $90 to have access to the remaining source code! No way, I'm not doing it (I'm a poor student). This was definitely a frustrating. With $50 you can get yourself a copy of the Fluent student version to validate you're own code!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely good for applied CFD with engineering approach. Clear to beginners also.......2006-06-03

I am an aerospace engineer but have been working in experimental research for the last year when my interest in CFD came along.

This book was my first book ever bought in CFD; I went through many others from the library, but I bought this one because of its practical, and still precise and in-depth analysis of numerical methods applied to fluid dynamics.

It also dedicate a chapter to the Hess-Smith panel method applied to 2D aerodynamic bodies and it clearely gives enough details and practical steps to develop and write your own panel method code.

Every chapter has excercices at the end, but mostly, the author accompanies the expemples with codes written in fortran and reported in the CD.

The only thing that sometimes might be noticed (very lightly), are some typos or missing explanations on how he changed the notation.

A book to have for a beginner who is willing to intensevly learn CFD and computation.

      Book Description

In its 3rd revised and extended edition the book offers an overview of the techniques used to solve problems in fluid mechanics on computers and describes in detail those most often used in practice. Included are advanced methods in computational fluid dynamics, like direct and large-eddy simulation of turbulence, multigrid methods, parallel computing, moving grids, structured, block-structured and unstructured boundary-fitted grids, free surface flows. The 3rd edition contains a new section dealing with grid quality and an extended description of discretization methods. The book shows common roots and basic principles for many different methods. The book also contains a great deal of practical advice for code developers and users; it is designed to be equally useful to beginners and experts. The issues of numerical accuracy, estimation and reduction of numerical errors are dealt with in detail, with many examples.

1 out of 5 stars Only great for complete novices.......2002-01-29

Peric's PhD thesis is one of my most precious possessions. I consider Ferziger to be one of THE greats in Large Eddy Simulation. So I had great hopes for this book. I was warned before I saw it that it contained nothing that I wouldn't already know, but even so it was a big disappointment. I could have written a better book myself and I don't have half the brain of either of the authors. I've looked at it three times and each time turned away in disgust.

This book will point a novice in the correct direction, unlike Roach's book, and unlike Patankar's in a post Rhie-Chow age, but it avoids like the plague any subject with even the slightest whiff of controversy. As any new technique is always controversial, the book was some 5 to 10 years out of date even before it hit the press. Further, it discusses each subject in a very superficial way. More depth is needed.

I want a book that will tell me what the advantages are and how to program the conjugate gradient method, algebraic multigrid, superbee, wall reflection terms for Reynolds Stress, multiphase flow, viscoelasticity, coalescence, the axis in cylindrical coordinates, grid generation, surface tension, adaptive grids, spectral elements etc. This book is no help with any of these.

I frequently get asked "What's a good book for Computational Fluid Dynamics?". I have to admit that there isn't one. The best that I know are the user manuals for the various commercial CFD packages.

To summarise, if programming CFD is a 100 step journey then this book will only take you the first 3 steps, but at least they're 3 steps in the right direction. After you've been programming CFD for a year you can probably toss the book out without any great loss.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent teaching book.......2001-07-10

I found this book an excellent support in teaching and invaluable as an occasional reference in my practical work in industry. It is particularly gratifying to see that free surface flows are covered well. Best book I have seen so far in the field.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books for CFD code developers.......2001-05-24

This is the best book on CFD I' ve read. It is more useful to those who want to develop their own codes rather than CFD users: It mostly describes in deep detail (although in a concise manner) a single method used by the authors and developed by themselves and their colleagues. It is not intended to be a list of the vast number of CFD techniques developed so far.

Their method is state-of-the-art and they provide plenty of results to support it's quality. It is mostly directed towards incompressible flows. They provide a chapter that extends their method to compressible flows but they do not describe any special convection schemes for flows with shock waves. It can be applied to both structured and arbitrarily unstructured grids, although their approach to the discretization of the convection and diffusion terms is particularly useful in the case of arbitrarily unstrucured grids. State of the art subjects such as multigrid and error-driven grid refinement are also covered and integrated into their method.

I agree with a previous reviewer that they provide a very good coverage of solution methods for linear equation systems which arise in CFD. Most other books on CFD (all the ones that I have read) have a poor coverage of the subject and describe only old and inneficient methods. However even this book does not sufficiently describe conjugate-gradient type methods or Krylov subspace methods in general, but references are provided.

In conclusion, this book is not for beginners but for code developers who have some basic knowlwdge of CFD and a relatively good mathematical background.

      5 out of 5 stars I give it 5 stars.......2001-03-16

I agree with the reviewer that said this book is complimentary to an intro text such as Patankar. This is not a cook book for a first time coder. But it is a really great reference for the Finite Volume dilettante.

I really appreciate that all numerical results presented are thoroughly documented. That counts.

Really, really nice chapter on iterative solvers....

Good overall description on many other topics such as multi-grid methods, turbulence, grid geometry and PV coupling.

This book really helped me speed up my homegrown quite a bit.

They also have all kinds of stuff available by ftp....

4 out of 5 stars A lot of excellent detail.......1998-12-22

This is a very good book for learning the details of implementing the Finite Volume method in Computational Fluid Dynamics. I view it as very complimentary to S. V. Patankar's book, which is more general in nature. Both books are geared toward people who want to write computer programs to solve fluid transport problems (heat transfer, Navier-Stokes, etc.) Both tend to focus on numerical issues (as opposed to the physics of transport phenomena). But while Pantankar's book provides a very easy, approachable introduction that is thin on the details, Ferziger & Peric have written a book rich in details. For instance, they devote an entire chapter to solving linear systems of equations. They compare all of the commonly used methods and contrast their rates of convergence for various test cases. This level of detail is great if you already understand the big picture. I think it may be somewhat difficult for someone new to CFD to really understand the finite volume method from this book alone. I would recommend Patankar's book for a good intro and this book for the implementation details.

Just in general, i think this book is just soooo coool. I especially enjoyed the fourth order classical runge-kutta method. Professor Schiesser and Cesar knows what they are talking about, NO?

        Book Description

Lattice Boltzmann models have a remarkable ability to simulate single- and multi-phase fluids and transport processes within them. A rich variety of behaviors, including higher Reynolds numbers flows, phase separation, evaporation, condensation, cavitation, buoyancy, and interactions with surfaces can readily be simulated. This book provides a basic introduction that emphasizes intuition and simplistic conceptualization of processes. It avoids the more difficult mathematics that underlies LB models. The model is viewed from a particle perspective where collisions, streaming, and particle-particle/particle-surface interactions constitute the entire conceptual framework. Beginners and those with more interest in model application than detailed mathematical foundations will find this a powerful "quick start" guide. Example simulations, exercises, and computer codes are included. Working code is provided on the Internet.
