Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-03-19
"Fundamentals of Aerodynamics" is an excellent book by a knowledgeable author that provides the basic know-how and skills that an aeronautical engineer will find useful and helpful. The book is well written in a readable and easy to follow format that provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of aerodynamics. The author reinforced his message with numerous helpful examples and several illustrations which should help the reader to grasp the aerodynamics concepts and principles.
This is among the best aerodynamics books on the market for those studying the subject. You will find the aerodynamics concepts and theory well presented and explained.
This is recommended reading for those studying aeronautical engineering at undergraduate level. Practicing aeronautical engineers will also find the book to be a useful reference.
My Most-Used Aeronautics Reference Book.......2007-03-11
Over 5 years as an aerospace engineer at Boeing and Lockheed Martin, I have used this book far more than any other for aeronautics. This is not only a good textbook, but an excellent reference, and one of the few technical books I have found worth reading cover-to-cover. Many engineers simply say "look at Anderson" to find whatever answers you need.
A fun tour through aerodynamics if you like the math.......2007-02-28
Dr. Anderson's book is an excellent tool if you'd like to teach yourself aerodynamics and have the background in math to handle it (multivariable and vector calculus...get "Div, Grad, Curl, and All That" if you need a refresher). His derivations are very clear and his chapter maps provide a nice road guide to give you an idea of where you're going. This book is also very good at maintaining rigor in describing the limitations of the derivations, a necessary quality since a lot of us tend to forget that the results we see are only valid in certain circumstances (incompressible flow, irrotational flow, inviscid flow, etc.).
Very few downsides: a few typos and no answers to end-of-the-chapter problems.
Fantastic Aerodynamics Resource.......2007-02-16
5 Stars.
Fundamentals of Aerodynamics, by John D. Anderson, provides an excellent foundation in aerodynamics for engineers. Presented at the graduate or senior undergraduate level, this book covers all of the fundamentals in a student-friendly manner that also works well as a professional reference.
Dr. Anderson has quite a gift for placing information in appropriate contexts - both technically and historically. The book is well organized and promotes learning by laying a solid foundation and then building on that foundation. The sample problems presented through the chapters are clear and effective at illustrating important points.
Major topics include: Incompressible non-viscous flow, Compressible flow, and Viscous flow (including an introduction to boundary layers). Significant time is spent on potential flow theory and it's application to the prediction of lift and induced drag.
Also recommended for students of aeronautics are Dr. Anderson's other titles, including:
- Introduction to Flight
- Modern Compressible Flow with a Historical Perspective
- Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics
Outstanding.......2006-05-15
With no doubt this is the best Aerodynamics book for college students ever written...ever!Very clear explanations, full of examples and a good set of exercises to challenge your understanding of the subject. The only negative point is that there no answers to the problems.

Customer Reviews:
I got an A in Hydraulics.......2007-01-05
The outline was a handy, well-organized supplemental text that helped because we were using a really poor textbook. The worked problems were especially useful, but the summaries were clear, too.
Fluid Mechanics.......2007-01-04
I like this book very much. It has a lot of good information.
Schaum's Outline of Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Schaum's).......2006-02-24
It is an excellent condition and delivered on time.
Good source of solved problems in fluid mechanics.......2006-02-18
I am not a mechanical engineer. Instead, I am an electrical engineer who took an undergraduate fluid mechanics class last fall to help with some graphical simulation work I was doing. However, I still had to pass the same examinations and do the same homework as the other students who did have a mechanical engineering background, and I found this outline immensely helpful. This book is an excellent source of problem-solving techniques and exercises for anyone who is taking an undergraduate course in fluid mechanics, which is the branch of science concerned with how fluids behave at rest or in motion. This outline assumes that you are already familiar with statics and with calculus, and it makes heavy use of both subjects. There is not a lot of verbal explanation in this outline. Explanation is done mainly through the introduction of some formulas, and then some completely worked out examples using those formulas. It is not at all dry in its presentation, however, and makes heavy and appropriate use of instructive figures and diagrams. Fluid mechanics is about solving problems, and the most difficult part is analyzing the system and reducing it to a series of equations. Once this has been achieved there are a number of standard methods that can be used to solve them. This book gives a good amount of practice at allowing the student to figure out how to approach larger problems in chapters 8 through 10 - "Flow in Closed Conduits", "Complex Pipeline Systems", and "Flow in Open Channels", and also in the final chapter of the outline "Fluid Machinery". This book is a great companion to Munson's "Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics", which is the best textbook on the subject that I have encountered.
Recommended for Reference/Overview.......2000-06-23
Like all of the Schaum guides for subjects in Mechanical Engineering, this outline provides a good overview of fluid mechanics, but it doesn't go into a great deal of depth. It's easy to find the equations if you want to use the book as a reference manual or a study guide, and the problems can serve as a good supplement to an undergraduate class in Fluids.

Book Description
Ideal for courses in aerosol science or particle technology, Smoke, Dust, and Haze: Fundamentals of Aerosol Dynamics, 2/e, is the only modern text that focuses on aerosol dynamics--the study of the factors that determine changes in the distribution of aerosol properties with respect to particle size. It covers fundamental concepts, experimental methods, and a wide variety of applications. Using the aerosol dynamics approach, the author integrates a broad range of topics including stochastic processes, aerosol transport theory, coagulation, formation of agglomerates, classical nucleation theory, and the synthesis of ultrafine solid particles. The book makes extensive use of scaling concepts and dimensional analysis and emphasizes physical and physicochemical interpretations. Basic concepts are illustrated by applications to many fields including air pollution control, the atmospheric sciences, microcontamination in the semiconductor industry, and the industrial manufacture of powders, pigments, additives, and nanoparticles. Revised and expanded, this second edition features new chapters on the kinetics of agglomeration of noncoalescing particles and the fundamentals of aerosol reactor design. It covers the effects of turbulence on coagulation and gas-to-particle conversion and also discusses the formation of primary particles by the collision-coalescence mechanism. The chapter on the atmospheric aerosol has been completely rewritten within the aerosol dynamics framework. Its basic approach and topicality make Smoke, Dust, and Haze: Fundamentals of Aerosol Dynamics, 2/e, an essential guide for both students and researchers.

Book Description
In the last twenty years there has been an explosion of economic research on labor force dynamics; the movement of individuals between labor force states. This book focuses on the methods by which behavioral theories of labor force dynamics have been empirically implemented. Most attention is paid to the partial equilibrium two-state transitional model of job search behavior. That model is the foundation for much of our thinking about the nature of unemployment at both the individual and aggregate levels. Although the basic formulation has remained the same, approaches to the empirical implementation of such models has changed dramatically.

Mechanics Coach.......2007-03-19
When it comes to learning a subject, sometimes you can choose a subject and you get it, like music. You can get behind a piano and some people just get it; on the other hand, some people need to be showed every step to make a improvement. It takes more effort and more than likely, your in the latter category and require a book like Applied Dynamics. I really had difficulties with seeing the Mechanics, and for good fortune, I purchased the book. The book is accurate and shows you how to do basic dynamical problems in a logical manner. I use this book a a reference now!
Learning Dynamics: One of the best textbooks .......2005-12-24
I am a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering Department at Texas A&M University, College Station. To keep my knowledge and concepts of dynamics up to date, I have been referring to this book and I find it is one of the most well-written textbook, with thoroughly worked out examples and clear explanations. I have enjoyed reading this book. The way in which author has clarified and applied the Indirect Approach(Lagrangian/Hamilton Formulations) for the equations of motion formulation is very illustrative and clear of all ambiguities. This is a great favour of author since this approach is particularly powerful and extremely important for complicated electro-mechanical systems in particular and all dynamical systems in general.
Finally, I respectfully disagree with Mr.Daine (from Boston, MA) to have made such ignorant and un-educated remarks about such a brilliant piece of work. I believe Mr.Daine has been looking for some short-cut type, particular problem solving textbook that will never lay the foundations but solve some limited problems of immediate interest, never illustrating the complete framework. In other words, telling the truth, but not the whole truth. That is how any subject, with dynamics no exception, becomes obscure and horrible to students. But this book is all about laying the foundations and making you enjoy the process of learning, while never straying away from the main objective of all engineering analysis: Design. Hence it is a great book.
Muddy and loquacious.......2005-12-18
I used this text for an undergraduate dynamics class. I treat my textbooks as references and get the concepts from lectures.
This textbook is the most worthless I've ever purchased. The author drones for pages at a time before reaching a concept, and although he seems to find himself very entertaining, I'd be much happier with something clear and concise.
The example problems in the text are very unsatisfying. They are convoluted and never quite seem to be completely finished.
I found myself referencing Ogata and leaving this one on the shelf.
Best Dynamics book I've found.......2004-05-08
I was trying to learn dynamics on my own and looked through the local university library at several texts, trying to find one that would illuminate the Lagrangian method. They all cover it, but usually in ways I couldn't easily figure out from the text. Finally I stumbled on this fabulous book by James Williams of MIT. I immediately purchased my own copy and have been happily referring to it often.
Prof. Williams really takes pains to explain every step. It is obviously the result of many years of teaching, because he really knows how to convey the material to those who have not yet mastered it. (It seems to me math & physics texts are often written with maximum brevity to impress colleagues who already understand it all!). There are many examples, all worked out in detail. And many additional problems for practice.
There is also an interesting section on the history of science at the start -- some may find this out of place, but I think its great.
One more note I found interesting and unusual about this book. On page 179 Prof. Williams introduces the "indirect" methods of analyzing dynamics: the Lagrangian & Hamiltonian approaches. He writes "We shall take Hamilton's principle as the fundamental law for deriving the equations of motion of dynamic systems... While this perspecitve is not unique, it is unconventional, since many writers designate Newton's laws as the fundamental principles of mechanical dynamics... Indeed, many writers begin with Newton's laws and then proceed to 'derive' Hamilton's principle, a process we feel is philosophically and technically inappropriate." In other words, he doesn't try to justify the Hamiltonian methods, he just takes them as facts of nature as fundamental as F = m a. I admire this approach, but at the same time I crave some additional insight into why these methods work so well -- it is astonishing magic to see the answers pop out. Perhaps those insights are in the text -- I've yet to read it all.
(...)
Dyanmics Applied at its Best.......2002-08-05
This applied dynamics book is the most well-written dynamics text book I've ever read. In addition to explaining ALL the steps that are normally left to the reader to supply, it gives credit to the originators of all major concepts. Dr. Williams explains why there are direct and indirect methods for calculating the equations of motions. Most people I polled had never seen it as well explained. (It seems rather simple now, and we wonder why no one else has taken the time to really get down on the student's thinking level.) I collect physics/math books. This is the best I've seen.
