Customer Reviews:
Decent.......2005-09-26
This book does a pretty good job of explaining the basic concepts. But it doesn't seem to offer a complete coverage of the topics covered in the book.
Excellent for Physicist.......2004-02-07
We recently purchased this book and I find it extremely well written and useful. I would call it super for a physicist doing medical imaging research. The book reads like a reference text for a researcher. There are no cartoons or homework problems. The second edition is very up to date. The book could use some references to advanced information sources as it is a bit short on physics/mathematics details.
suitable for teaching medical physicist wannabes now.......2002-04-22
I currently own the first edition of this book, and after flipping throug this new expanded 2nd edition, I'll be upgrading soon. The first book is an excellent text to use for teaching radiology residents the principles of medical imaging. Now, this second edition with greatly expanded content and pictures looks like it would be suitable for teaching a course to medical physics students. All sections appear to be significantly expanded with the additional detail needed for medical physicists. Still excellent for residents, but might go into a little more detail than they need.
Kudos for an excellent textbook........2002-04-08
Opening the pages to this textbook is like stepping into a classroom. These authors obviously are not only experts in their respective subspecialties of medical physics, but they are also seasoned teachers of the art and science of this field of medicine. This is easily evidenced by the clarity of thought and completeness with which they treat each topic in this comprehensive, easily readable textbook. I highly recommend this textbook to all who have a need for such a clear, concise teaching of the many aspects of medical physics covered in this work.
Essential Physics Review.......2002-03-13
This text book is the most up to date and comprehensive text book available for radiology residents preparing for the ABR exam as of this date 3/12/2002. I have recommended this text for my most serious students and they have done quite well on the ABR exam. ( Most have scored in the > 90th percentile in the U.S.) For residents who want to just pass the exam, I recommend Sprawls text.

Book Description
This book provides a synoptic introduction to the key fundamental and operational principles of MRI for medical physicists, radiologists, biochemists, and students. It addresses basic NMR principles, basic imaging concepts, Fourier transform concepts and fundamental applications such as chemical shift imaging, rf pulse design, fast imaging, motion and flow, MR angiography, diffusion, sequence design, and coil concepts.
Customer Reviews:
the most complete book so far.......2004-12-09
This is probably the most complete textbook on MRI so far, covering many of the recent topics. The prerequisite is an undergraduate engineering or physics degree, but nothing fancy, the math is completely trivial, and all of the necessary background is included in the book. So it's quite comprehensive in that regard, you won't need to use other books, it's all in there. And if it's not in there, I find the list of references at the end of sections to be excellent. They really refer you to the relevant literature so you don't have to worry about missing important details. I don't give 5 stars for books like this, because I just see it as a decent book. It is not "extraordinary" (5 stars), it is just the best book on MRI out there, but essentially because there are no decent alternative out there that cover such a broad range of topics. I suspect there will be subsequent editions of this book to cover newer topics, but the bulk of the book will remain the same, since it covers mostly very basic topics (a good choice of topics too).
An excellent intro for readers with some math background.......2000-03-01
This book is a welcome introduction for readers who are comfortable with basic differential equations and vector calculus. As an applied mathematician interested in learning the fundamentals of MRI, I had grown quite frustrated with the simplified literature on one hand ("MRI for technologists", "MRI for medical people", "MRI for dummies"...) and the professional literature on the other, which is directed at people already immersed in the study of MR technology. In contrast, this book is an excellent introduction to the subject for applied mathematicians (though this may not have been the intended audience), as it makes no assumptions regarding reader's science background and thus explains thoroughly all relevant E+M, physics and signal processing. But most importantly, it does so without cutting mathematical corners. This results in a far more lucid and logical exposition than books which try to protect the reader for his/her own good.
Book Description
This book summarizes the radiation physics knowledge that professionals working in medical physics need to master for efficient and safe dealings with ionizing radiation. It contains eight chapters, each chapter covering a specific group of subjects related to radiation physics and is intended as a textbook for a course in radiation physics in medical-physics graduate programs. However, the book may also be of interest to the large number of professionals, not only medical physicists, who in their daily occupations deal with various aspects of medical physics and find a need to improve their understanding of radiation physics.
The main target audience for this book is graduate students studying for M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in medical physics, who haveto possess the necessary physics and mathematics background knowledge to be able to follow and master the complete textbook. Medical residents, technology students and biomedical engineering students may find certain sections too challenging or esoteric, yet they will find many sections interesting and useful in their studies.
Candidates preparing for professional certification exams in any of the medical physics subspecialties should find the material useful, and some of the material would also help candidates preparing for certification examinations in medical dosimetry or radiation-related medical specialties.
Numerous textbooks are available covering the various subspecialties of medical physics but they generally make a transition from the elementary basic physics directly into the intricacies of the given medical physics subspecialty. The intent of this textbook is to provide the missing link between the elementary physics on the one hand and the physics of the subspecialties on the other hand.

Customer Reviews:
Q & A in MRI is an excellent resource........2007-07-13
I used the first ed. of this book to study for my MR registry exam & found it most helpful in understanding pulse sequences & MRI physics. The author(s) answer the questions in concise, easy to understand jargon that won't confuse the student, yet is technical enough for experienced technologist's to benefit. The second ed. is a continuation of this tried & true method of teaching & I most certainly would recommend this book, especially for anyone that is just learning MRI or getting ready to sit for the registry exam.

very good book.......2005-09-25
Most excellent book. If you are looking for an easy MR book to read with a good format, this is the book for you. It contains many answer to MR questions you have and never dare asking. I went thru many MR books, this is by far my favorite, I use it all the time. Would highly recommend it.
A Phenomenal Resource.......2002-08-03
A great resource for anyone working in MRI!!
Outstanding in Every Way.......2002-06-25
This is a great source of information for all those involved in MRI practice. The authors give concise, readable, and even sometimes interesting answers to the most commonly asked questions pertaining to this complex subject, without unnecessary simplification. Both authors should be commended on a job well done. This beats the competition hands down!
Elster's Q & A on MRI, 2nd Ed........2001-05-29
This is an outstanding book for the beginner and intermediate level student of MRI. The book provides understandable, yet much more in depth explanations of basic physics and gives intuitive insights into mechanisms which I have not found in other presentations. Also, the references at the bottom of each question are superb, often with commentary on their special value. Some excellent web sites are given which I had not found by search engine. The authors clearly devoted tremendous effort to this book to make it as good as it could be and they were successful. This book is a paradigm for presenting highly technical topics in an understandable way - very impressive, and highly recommended to anyone learning MRI.

Book Description
This book presents the basics of MR practice and theory in a unique way: backwards! The subject is approached just as a new practitioner typically encounters MRI: from images, equipment, and scanning protocols, rather than pages of dry physics theory. The reader is brought immediately face-to-face with issues pertinent to practice; filling in the theoretical background as their experience of scanning grows. Key ideas are introduced in an intuitive manner that is faithful to the underlying physics but avoids the need for difficult or distracting mathematics. Additional explanations for the more technically inquisitive are given in optional secondary text boxes.

Picture to Proton, The Right Way Round.......2003-08-18
Anyone who has tried to teach MR to non-physicists is used to two dilemas.
How do you keep a student interested while you lay the "necessary groundwork" to explain MRI ?
How do you give craft an intuitive explanation without oversimplifications that can be hard to explain away later?
These authors find a way. They present MR in the way we experience it, starting with the questions everyone faces first about images, contrast resolutionm, and using those questions to guide a path to the mechanisms of image production, signal generation and manipulation.
The easy flowing style underlines the skill and credibility of the authors, while side boxes offer historical perspectives and deeper treatment of key topics.
IMHO, This the perfect first text, and a great desk reference for all MR users.

Customer Reviews:
Great introduction to Nuclear Medicine instrumentation.......2007-01-12
A great deal of the information that you will need to get your feet wet in the field of Nuclear Medicine physics is contained in this book. I have used it to teach medical residents and it follows the board exam material pretty faithfully. Well written.
Classic nuclear medicine textbook.......2007-01-09
Simon Cherry has recently updated this venerated classic textbook originally written by Michael Phelps and Jim Sorenson. The revised and expanded book makes a timely contribution to modern imaging. I just used this book as a supplement to a graduate course at San Diego State University on "Physics of Imaging". It is clear, thorough and very well written. Steven Goetsch, Ph.D.
The "Standard text" for nuclear medicine physics.......2003-09-16
"Sorenson and Phelps" is now "Cherry, Sorenson and Phelps." It is still the standard text for nuclear medicine physics, covering the topics well for the radiology resident, nuclear medicine resident or fellow, or a beginning medical physicist. While clearly (in my opinion) the best text in its field, I would suggest that the authors give future consideration for a companion CD ROM (as in many new texts) that helps the reader understand some of the more complex topics, and that they give more treatment to quantiative PET scanning (including a "cookbook" on Patlak analysis using either arterial sampling or modified for venous sampling with left ventricular or aortic region of interest measurement with PET/CT). Sadly, little PET/CT information is available, perhaps the "hottest" topic in nuclear medicine.
All in all, though, it is still the standard text in the field. I am glad to see (and own) the latest edition, and highly recommend it for purchase.
superb information content explained well.......1997-11-04
Sorenson and Phelps have compiled all of the relative and essential physics of nuclear medicine in such a way that is easy to understand. This text also contained graphs that illustrated points and made them much clearer. The pictures of hardware, although somewhat outdated, also were helpful in the learning process. This is an excellent text for any course of study related to nuclear medicine.
The bible for nuclear medicine physics...a "must have" book........1997-06-25
This is one of those books that should be in the
library of every medical and health physicist, radiologist, residents and students. A little dated by now (published in 1986), but it still provides excellent coverage of the basic physics of nuclear medicine which haven't really changed.
Topics covered include radiation, radiation detectors and instrumentation, radionuclide production, dosimetry, Anger cameras and imaging systems, tracer kinetics and radiation safety.

Book Description
This textbook gives a comprehensive survey of the analytical treatment of MRI physics and engineering. It gives readers the background to apply MRI in medicine or design (sub)systems or sequences for new applications. Special attention is paid to the treatment of intrinsic artifacts of the different sequences, which can be described in a mathematically uniform way for the different scan methods. The book contains many images, especially showing specific properties of the different scan methods. The methods discussed include RARE, GRASE, EPI and Spiral Scan. The 2nd edition and the 3rd edition were expanded and refined. The chapter on motion and flow was expanded, and a chapter added on the configuration theory and multipulse sequences such as BURST, TSE and FFE. A.L. Luiten gives an overview of the early history of MRI imaging. The 3rd edition deals with stranger gradient and new RF coil systems, and sequences such as Balanced FFE and q-space diffusion imaging and SENSE.
Customer Reviews:
Better than expected.......2004-11-03
Not for the clinician, radiologist, or beginner MRI engineer. I agree with previous reviewer that the book resembles a set of notes, but they are excellent notes if you already know your MRI physics. The book is therefore nice to have for an overview, or reminder of a particular application (the preface *does* say "not meant for making a first acquaintance with MRI"). The images are quite acceptable (3rd ed) and well-chosen to demonstrate the ideas. Not 5 stars because the notes *are* too brief sometimes (another reviewer said shallow), making it impossible to fully understand, let alone implement, SENSE or Shinnar-LeRoux, for example, from just these notes.
A good MRI introduction book.......2000-11-25
This is a good book for introducing MRI basics for non-experts. advanced scanning methods are discussed also. The applications section is very good and the references are valuable.
With my full respect to the Auther of this book.......2000-10-18
Poor images,Poor Graphics and shallow content! This book is not for any proffessional in the field of clinical MRI. I can say that this book is just a collection of short notes designed for Philips engineers. The price (almost $80) of this book does not match the quality of content, the quality of images and the graphics as well ( hand drawing & illustration). If you are philips engineer think twice before you buy this book otherwise think 100 times to buy it for 80 $.

Book Description
This comprehensive publication covers all aspects of image formation in modern medical imaging modalities, from radiography, fluoroscopy, and computed tomography, to magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound. It addresses the techniques and instrumentation used in the rapidly changing field of medical imaging. Now in its fourth edition, this text provides the reader with the tools necessary to be comfortable with the physical principles, equipment, and procedures used in diagnostic imaging, as well as appreciate the capabilities and limitations of the technologies.
Customer Reviews:
Don't buy it.......2007-01-31
I had to buy this book for a class. I was very disappointed.
This edition has several typos and mistakes on the tables. The examples and problems sections are really irritating, sometimes they show a couple of equations and write 5 problems over the same equation over and over again, and I have found instances where the "answers to selected problems" section show incorrect information. There is very little physics that you can learn from those problems.
It seems that it is hard to find good books on Medical Imaging, but I highly recommend "The essential physics of medical imaging" (Bushberg. et al.) This is a very good review of the imaging techniques but it is not very quantitative. A more quantitative book I would recommend is "Medical Imaging: signals and systems" by Jerry L. Price.
If you have an option, don't waste your money on this book.
Comprehensive Book.......2004-04-16
"...fulfills the authors goal of providing an up-to-date survey of the physics of medical imaging in a format that will appeal to students and educators alike. The coverage of topics is sufficiently comprehensive, making it a suitable introductory text for a number of imaging-oriented courses." (Radiology, January 2004)
"An Excellent Introduction".......2003-04-22
"...an excellent introduction to the physics of medical imaging...Medical Imaging Physics is sure to be a favorite of residents, perhaps supplanting Christensen's Introduction to the Physics of Diagnostic Radiology as the classic radiology residency physics text." (American Journal of Roentgenology, Vol. 180, No. 4, April 2003)
Review of Medical Imaging Physics.......2003-04-12
This text is excellent for Medical Physicists preparing for the first part of their ABR or ABMP exam. This book is also a very good text for teaching Radiology Residents. Radiology Residents currently (4/12/03), do not use calculators for their ABR exam therefore they do not need to know most of the calculations that are presented in this text. The chapter on Radiation Detectors is an excellent primer for medical physicists, health physicists and Biomedical engineers. My only criticism of the text is that the QA recommendations are not current and the MRI section does not address image quality enough detail.

Nuclear Medicine Board Review: Questions And Answers for Self-Assessment
ASIN: 185233875X |
Book Description
Nuclear medicine plays a crucial role in patient care, and this book is an essential guide for all practitioners to the many techniques that inform clinical management. The first part covers the scientific basis of nuclear medicine, the rest of the book deals with clinical applications. Diagnostic imaging has an increasingly important role in patient management and, despite advances in other modalities (functional MRI and spiral CT), nuclear medicine continues to make its unique contribution by its ability to demonstrate physiological function. This book is also expanded by covering areas of development in nuclear medicine, such as PET, methods of tumor imaging, and data processing. All illustrations for this new edition reflect current standards of image quality.
This practical approach results in a book which is invaluable to the radiologist, physician, physicist, or technologist starting in nuclear medicine but also contains up-to-date advice for the most experienced practitioner.
