An Introduction to Ultrathin Organic Films: From Langmuir--Blodgett to Self--Assembly
Abraham Ulman Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0127082301 |
Book Description
The development of oriented organic monomolecular layers by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and self-assembly (SA) techniques has led researchers toward their goal of assembling individual molecules into highly ordered architectures. Thus the continually growing contribution of LB and SA systems to the chemistry and physics of thin organic films is widely recognized. Equally well-known is the difficulty in keeping up to date with the burgeoning multidisciplinary research in this area. Dr. Ulman provides a massive survey of the available literature. The book begins with a section on analytical tools to broaden the understanding of the structure and properties of monolayers and films. Following sections discuss LB films, the preparation and properties of SA monolayers and films, the modeling of LB and SA monolayers, and the application of LB and SA films.

This book covers the fundamentals of conventional transmission electron microscopy (CTEM) as applied to crystalline solids. Emphasis is on the experimental and computational methods used to quantify and analyze CTEM observations. A supplementary website containing interactive modules and free Fortran source code accompanies the text. The book starts with the basics of crystallography and quantum mechanics providing a sound mathematical footing for the rest of the text. The next section deals with the microscope itself, describing the various components in terms of the underlying theory. The second half of the book focuses on the dynamical theory of electron scattering in solids including its applications to perfect and defective crystals, electron diffraction and phase contrast techniques. Based on a lecture course given by the author in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, the book is ideal for graduate students as well as researchers new to the field.Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Introduction to Transmission Electron Microscopy.......2007-02-16
Excellent.......2003-08-21
Although I found the mathematical formalism that makes up the middle of this book excessive, it is important for people who will be modelling TEM experiments. The remainder of the book, on TEM basics, operation, and image/SADP interpretation, are all excellent.
This book is an excellent CTEM text.

Fluid Physics in Geology: An Introduction to Fluid Motions on Earth's Surface and within Its Crust
David Jon Furbish Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0195077016 |
Book Description
Fluid Physics in Geology is aimed at geology students who are interested in understanding fluid behavior and motion in the context of a wide variety of geological problems, and who wish to pursue related work in fluid physics. The book provides an introductory treatment of the physical and dynamical behaviors of fluids by focusing first on how fluids behave in a general way, then looking more specifically at how they are involved in certain geological processes. The text is written so students may concentrate on the sections that are most relevant to their own needs. Helpful problems following each chapter illustrate applications of the material to realistic problems involving groundwater flows, magma dynamics, open-channel flows, and thermal convection. Fluid Physics in Geology is ideal for graduate courses in all areas of geology, including hydrology, geomorphology, sedimentology, and petrology.

An Introduction to Riemann Surfaces, Algebraic Curves and Moduli Spaces (Theoretical and Mathematical Physics)
Martin Schlichenmaier Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Accessories:
ASIN: 3540711740 |
Book Description
This book gives an introduction to modern geometry. Starting from an elementary level the author develops deep geometrical concepts, playing an important role nowadays in contemporary theoretical physics. He presents various techniques and viewpoints, thereby showing the relations between the alternative approaches.
At the end of each chapter suggestions for further reading are given to allow the reader to study the touched topics in greater detail.
This second edition of the book contains two additional more advanced geometric techniques: (1) The modern language and modern view of Algebraic Geometry and (2) Mirror Symmetry.
The book grew out of lecture courses. The presentation style is therefore similar to a lecture. Graduate students of theoretical and mathematical physics will appreciate this book as textbook. Students of mathematics who are looking for a short introduction to the various aspects of modern geometry and their interplay will also find it useful. Researchers will esteem the book as reliable reference.

Introduction to Surface and Superlattice Excitations
Michael G. Cottam , and David R. Tilley Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521321549 |
Book Description
Cottam and Tilley provide an introduction to the properties of wave-like excitations associated with surfaces and interfaces. The emphasis is on acoustic, optic and magnetic excitations, and, apart from one section on liquid surfaces, the text concentrates on solids. The important topic of superlattices is also discussed, in which the different kinds of excitation are considered from a unified point of view. Throughout the book the authors are careful to relate theory and experiment and all of the most important experimental techniques are described. The theoretical treatment assumes only a knowledge of undergraduate physics, except for Green function methods that are used in a few sections; these methods are developed in an appendix. The book also contains extensive references to enable the reader to consult the research and review literature, and problems are provided in each of the main chapters to allow the reader to develop topics presented in the text.Books:
