Awful.......2007-01-16
If you can possibly avoid it, don't buy this book. If you can't possibly avoid it, remember to use the internet. The internet is 3000 times better at things than this book is.
Also, realize that even the problems in this book have continuous typos so if your TA grades you as wrong, check to make sure you are doing the same problem their solution book solved. I wish we could rate this book without a star.
Superb.......2006-10-10
This book is Superbly well written and comprehensible. Its is my favourite book in my Library and it has made Digital Systems (A Subject in my Course) my favourite. The book is Good... no kidding. At first when I started reading the book, I thought it was going to be like one of those books that just kept the reader on a Rocking Chair. Fortunately, I kept on reading because I had nothing better to do; as a result by the time I read two 10 pages... I got hooked.
The book is intuitive and explains lots of Techniques about Implementing Circuits.
Between the two extremes.......2006-01-04
Although I'm very sympathetic to the bad reviews of this text, having just used it in an undergrad course I recently completed, I think they unfairly target the book when the courses themselves are probably partly to blame.
Not to say that the 5-star review is perfectly accurate either. You'll probably find that the reason that review was so good was that since the author was 5-years lately graudated from his degree, he was reviewing material rather than learning it for the first time. Even a poor book would be useful for this.
But to my own opinions; I found the book fairly comprehensive, with detailed and complete explanations that could be followed with a little effort. Although it had a lot of diagrams, it was still fairly wordy, which is unfortunate in a technical text. It also didn't have any worked answers to the questions, except some online, which is difficult for a student to get to on a spur of the moment when they need them.
The other reviews are also correct when they say that many of the exercise questions didn't directly relate to any of the explanations in their chapters, but seemed to require knowledge of completely new material.
All in all, this could be a great text if it was twice the size, contained a lot more diagrams, contained at least some worked answers, and made sure that every exercise question was based on theory explanation that was actually present in the book. As it is, it is next to useless as a self-study guide.
What it remains extremely good for is a companion text to a course which includes contact with lecturers and tutors. If the head lecturer makes sure that any theory not covered in the book is covered in class, and chooses exercise questions that they know the students should be able to complete, and if the tutors are accessible for advice, then the text is extraordinarly good.
No offence to the other reviewers, but I suspect that if they hated the book that much, they were either students who preferred self-study to attending class, or their courses were badly structured.
Excellent book! A "must have" to all CS and EE professionals! .......2005-12-14
This book is the most comprehensive book ever written on digital logic and computer fundamentals. There is no other way to put it.
I graduated with a CS degree five years ago, and we used "Structured Computer Organization" by Andrew Tanenbaum for class. I feel that the negative reviews written on this book should instead apply to Tanenbaum's.
This is the book we should have used for class in the first place. Here I am five years after graduating, and, only now, after reading this book, I am beginning to fully understand how all the internals of a digital computer work and fit together.
I have no affiliation with the authors nor am I in academia to have any reason defend it. But rather, I am defending it for the wealth of information that was put in it. This is information that is paramount to every CS and EE student/professional.
I bought this book on my own, for self development, and have read most chapters. I had no trouble following the explanations. The authors give the motivation for the study right at the beginning of each chapter, so that readers/students would look ahead and anticipate where and how the concepts and techniques will be used (and where does it apply/fit within the general purpose computer). They first give an overview and then delve into it deeper. I believe that everything should be taught that way, so that people can actually learn what was taught, especially when learning how computers tick.
I have to admit, however, that some of the concepts might be a little advanced if you are just starting to learn about computers. That's why I think that if this book is used in class at some university, it should be taught in two semesters - in order to cover everything thoroughly. There is much and too good-of-information to pass up, to cover the book only partially.
Don't get discouraged when reading this book and find that you don't understand some concepts. Find another lower level explanation to it from a different source, understand it, and then return to the book again and continue. You will find out that by doing that, going through it and learning concept by concept, you will gain an enormous amount of knowledge.
Look elsewhere.......2005-11-10
If this book is required for your class, PLEASE buy a different book. This book offers little to no explanation of key topics, is very poorly written, and is hard to follow. In many cases, you will be better off simply reading Wikipedia. If you go to a school that requires this book, I would advise you to write angry letters to the people who decided to use it until they submit to your whim. By choosing this book, they have ruined an entire semester of class for you. How does that make you feel?
Book Description
PREFACE
This book covers all basic concepts of computer engineering and science from digital logic circuits to the design of a complete microcomputer system in a systematic and simplified manner. It is written to present a clear understanding of the principles and basic tools required to design typical digital systems such as microcomputers.
The fourth edition of this book contains a detailed coverage of popular hardware description languages such as Verilog and VHDL. These two languages are included independent of each other in such a way that either Verilog or VHDL can be covered in a course without any confusion.
The material included in this book is divided into three sections. The first section contains Chapters 1 through 5. These chapters describe digital circuits at the gate and flip-flop levels and describe the analysis and design of combinational and sequential circuits. Verilog and VHDL are introduced in this section. The second section contains Chapters 6 through 8. These chapters describe microcomputer organization/architecture, programming, design of computer instruction sets, CPU, memory, and I/O. CPU design using Verilog and VHDL is included in this section. The third section contains Chapters 9 through 11. These chapters contain typical 16-, 32-, and 64-bit microprocessors manufactured by Intel and Motorola. Future plans of Intel and Motorola are also included. The details of the topics covered in eleven chapters of this book follow.
Chapter 1 presents an explanation of basic terminologies, fundamental concepts of digital integrated circuits using transistors, a comparison of LSTTL, HC, and HCT IC characteristics, the evolution of computers, and technological forecasts.
Chapter 2 provides various number systems and codes suitable for representing information in microprocessors.
Chapter 3 covers Boolean algebra along with map simplification of Boolean functions. The basic characteristics of digital logic gates are also presented.
Chapter 4 contains analysis and design of combinational circuits. Typical combinational circuits such as adders, decoders, encoders, multiplexers, and demultiplexers are included. Combinational logic design using Verilog and VHDL is also provided.
Chapter 5 covers various types of flip-flops. Analysis and design of sequential circuits such as counters are provided. Sequential logic design using Verilog and VHDL is included.
Chapter 6 presents typical microcomputer architecture, internal microprocessor organization, memory, I/O, and programming concepts. Design of a typical status register using Verilog and VHDL is included.
Chapter 7 contains the fundamentals of instruction set design. Design of registers and ALUs is presented. Furthermore, control unit design using both hardwired and microprogrammed approaches is included. Nanomemory concepts are covered. Finally, CPU design using both Verilog and VHDL is included.
Chapter 8 explains the basics of memory, I/O, and parallel processing. Topics such as main memory array design, memory management concepts, cache memory organization, and pipelining are included.
Chapters 9 and 10 contain detailed descriptions of the architectures, addressing modes, instruction sets, I/O, and system design concepts associated with Intel 8086 and Motorola MC68000.
Chapter 11 provides a summary of the basic features of Intel and Motorola 32- and 64-bit microprocessors. Overviews of the Intel 80486 / Pentium / Pentium Pro / Pentium II / Celeron / Pentium III, Pentium 4, and the Motorola 68030 / 68040 / 68060 / PowerPC (32- and 64-bit) microprocessors are included. Finally, future plans by both Intel and Motorola are discussed.
The book can be used in a number of ways. Because the materials presented are basic and do not require any advanced mathematical background, the book can easily be adopted as a text for three quarter or two semester courses. These courses can be taught at the undergraduate level in engineering and computer science. The recommended course sequence can be digital logic design in the first course, with topics that include selected portions from Chapters 1 through 5 , followed by a second course on computer architecture / organization (Chapters 6 through 8). The third course may include selected topics from Chapters 9 through 11, covering Intel and/or Motorola microprocessors.
The audience of this book can also be graduate students or practicing microprocessor system designers in the industry. Portions of Chapters 9 through 11 can be used as an introductory graduate text in electrical engineering or computer science. Practitioners of microprocessor system design in the industry will find simplified explanations along with examples and comparison considerations than are found in manufacturers manuals.
The author wishes to express his sincere appreciation to his students, Cindy Yeh, Vu Tran, King Lam, Luis Galdamez, Anthony Hernandez, Mario Martinez, Raul Velasquez, Adolph Huynh, Thien Ton, Elias Younes, Beniamin Petreaca, and to all others for making constructive suggestions. The author is indebted to his colleagues, Dr. R. Chandra, Dr. M. Davarpanah, Dr. T. Sacco, and Dr. S. Monemi of California State Poly University, Pomona for their valuable comments. The author is also grateful to Dr. W. C. Miller of University of Windsor, Canada and to his good friend, US Congressman Duke Cunningham (TOPGUN, Vietnam), for their inspiration during the writing effort. Finally, the author is especially indebted to his father and his deceased mother who were primarily responsible for the author's accomplishments.
M. Rafiquzzaman , Pomona, California

Customer Reviews:
Badly Out of Date.......2007-09-01
The first half of this book does an excellent job of teaching the background information needed for digital design. Unfortunately, the CPU-specific sections that follow are badly out of date. The author spends altogether too much time describing the 8086 and its family of (ISA-bus-specific) support chips -- devices that are almost never used anymore. It needs to be revised to talk about current technology.
Great Info.......2005-08-13
I find the book "Fundamentals of digital logic and microcomputer design" very useful. I am a Cal Poly student, and took a few courses from Professor Rafiquzzaman. He is an excellent professor. It seems to me that the unproffesional comments by the other Cal Poly student are motivated. He probably took Professor Rafiquzzaman's class and received a bad grade. You should go through the book yourself and make your own judgements. The topics in the book are presented in a very simplified way. It's easy to understand. The CD included in the 5th edition is very handy. I am sure once you go through the book, you will know what I mean.
Fundamentals of Digital Logic and Microcomputer Design.......2004-06-08
The content of this is easy for user to understand, and there always an examply in the theory. The author also combine Verilog in this book, so the student can understand Digital Logic efficiently before they can start Verilog. This will help most student understand the content of both Digital Logic and Verilog.
Great.......2004-02-09
I haven't read this book, but from the reviews it seems that this book and the author are abnormal.
Great book.......2003-08-21
Makes understanding the subject simplistic. It tells you what you need to know and tries not to confuse you with all the other garbage some Digital Logic and Microprocessor Design books have in them. I also took a couple of courses with the author and I know that this guy has had a lot of experience with what he writes. He has written training material for certain companies in the industry. I recommended another book that he also wrote, "Preparing for an Outstanding Career in Computers," because he refers to this book in his courses and usually uses the examples from this book as a supplement to the class.

Great book.......2007-06-16
Great book for reference and self study if you remember your circuit analysis and laplace transforms. Very detailed with out making ones eyes gloss over. Do wish it had a few more d examples but overall cant complain.
still an outstanding, encyclopedic treatise.......2006-03-23
Mulling through some old reviews, I noticed that I left a technical error (more of a technical glossing-over) in my review of Franco's opus. It's high time I corrected it, since it's been there for more than a year, no doubt befuddling readers who thought they knew something about analog electronics. Specifically, I had said that the designation of the input terminals as '+' and '-' really made no difference: it's more reflective of convention, sciz. (assuming something other than a difference amplifier), the significant input network is attached to '-'--with '+' grounded--if the configuration is inverting, but to '+' (with '-' grounded) if the configuration is non-inverting. That's the truth, but it isn't the whole truth. When we examine border cases--those that tax the operational limits of the device, straying outside the "passband," analogically speaking (yes, I know, that typically refers to a frequency range, but here I use it to address an input voltage difference range)--the otherwise cosmetic or mnemonic choice of '+' or '-' terminal becomes rather more manifest. Remember that the amplifier actually amplifies the input voltage difference in the microscopic sense--even though it implements a semantically notable linear operation in the macroscopic sense--relying upon the feedback network to remanufacture an appropriate input voltage difference that maintains the nominal purpose of the circuit. When things go ape and the input voltage difference is much too high or, alternatively, much too low (and that may be a tough nut to crack), the output characteristic will be dependent upon what was connected to '+' and what, to '-'.
Now, wasn't that as clear as mud? Remember, I'm constrained to use words, and words alone, as my medium of communication, and, since I have only a fraction of a thousand words, I have only a fraction of a picture!
Excellent Book.......2005-05-27
This is an excellent book on linear circuit design, the best I have read to-date. It covers feedback theory, ideal op amps, active filter design & most importantly practical op amp limitations. It also covers voltage regulators, voltage references, ADCs, DACs, op amp noise & more. What I liked most was the combination of mathematical circuit analysis & practical design. Too many books show useful circuits without bothering to explain anything about how they work. It also has plenty of exercises to tax the brain.
As good as it gets..........2005-03-17
Really a top notch book on op-amps and almost anything you'd ever do with them. Has math where it's needed and rules of thumb where it isn't. Actually is just a great analog design book altogether. Really the definative text on the subject of designing with op-amps.
Excellent Resource for Student or Practicing Engineer.......2003-02-23
This book can be an excellent resource for any Analog Integrated Circuit Design Electrical Engineering student or practicing engineer. The book can assist in the modeling of IC devices such as transistors, resistors, and capacitors. It also sensibly covers the building blocks of analog integrated circuits: gain stages, output stages, level shifters, current sources and mirrors.
The reader is expected to have a general understanding of electronics, frequency-domain analysis procedures, and understand basic Pspice operations. The book generally covers enough material for a half-year of courses at the upper-division/graduate level although the book could certainly be useful for a single class.
The material generally starts out as basic and proceeds to a complex level. There are helpful figures and diagrams on nearly every page and the organization is generally sensible and intuitive. There are many worked examples and hundreds of end-of-chapter problems. The text is supported by a website that offers downloadable design projects, additional examples, and design software. Franco has done an admiral job at presenting a complicated subject.
Here's a brief description of SOME of the topics found in each chapter:
1) Basic amplifier concepts and arrangements are explored. Also covers negative feedback, the loop gain, and basic circuit analysis.
2) Current-to-Voltage & Voltage-to-Current Converters, Current, Difference, Instrumentation, and Transducer Bridge Amplifiers.
3) Active Filters. Transfer Function, 1st order, KRC, multiple-feedback, state-variable, audio, and biquad filters.
4) Filter Approximations, switched-capacitor, universal sc filters, and cascade design.
5) Low-input bias-current Op amps, low-input-offset-voltage Op Amps, Op Amp Circuit Diagrams, and Input offset Voltage.
6) Open and Closed loop response. Transient Response, Input and Output Impedances, and effect of Finite GBP on Filters and Integrator Circuits.
7) Noise Dynamics and Properties. Sources of Noise and Low-Noise Op Amps.
8) Stability problems. Stability of CFA Circuits and in Constant-GBP Op Amp Circuits. Internal and External Frequency Compensation.
9) Schmitt Triggers, analog switches, voltage comparators, and precision rectifiers.
10) Sine, Triangular, Sawtooth, and Monolithic Wave Generators. Also Multivibrators and V-F and F-V Converters.
11) Voltage References and Regulators. Switching, linear, and monolithic switching regulators.
12) Performance Specifications, D-A and A-D Conversion Techniques. Oversampling Converters and Multiplying DAC Applications.
13) Nonlinear Amplifiers. Phase-Locked Loops, Monolithic PLLs, Analog Multipliers. Log/Antilog and Operational Transconductance Amplifiers.

Book Description
Updated with modern coverage, a streamlined presentation, and an excellent CD-ROM, this fifth edition achieves a balance between theory and application. Author Charles H. Roth, Jr. carefully presents the theory that is necessary for understanding the fundamental concepts of logic design while not overwhelming students with the mathematics of switching theory. Divided into 20 easy-to-grasp study units, the book covers such fundamental concepts as Boolean algebra, logic gates design, flip-flops, and state machines. By combining flip-flops with networks of logic gates, students will learn to design counters, adders, sequence detectors, and simple digital systems. After covering the basics, this text presents modern design techniques using programmable logic devices and the VHDL hardware description language.

College Text.......2007-05-15
I bought this book for my college class. I don't have it until this summer. It comes with a disk with two programs for programming digital logic.
Now that I have used the book it is good for logic but lacked in use at design. We supplemented with the Wiley book that was good. But Schaums outline was better then both texts. I would buy Digital Pricipals and rent the book if posible.
Great Self Study Guide.......2006-10-21
I grade the first 20 chapters an A ... the remainder: a C+
This book is a great intro to logic design. Read it with John W Carters : Digital Design with Programmable Logic Devices ... to clear up state machine/synchronous binary
counter issues. And to get experience with real world design issues.
Background comments.......2005-06-18
A few comments concerning the material and Dr. Roth. I had the pleasure of using the book while it was still being 'student tested' prior to publication back in the 1970s, and found the course so interesting that I proctored it the following semester. My background prior to taking what was at the time a senior level EE course included no EE whatsoever. The material was well-organized and presented in a consistent pedagogical manner that I find rare in technical textbooks.
I had the pleasure of taking courses with Dr. Roth, and wish to emphasize that he has a very strong interest in effective teaching, and in learning how to make learning more efficient. I found that, as a result, I was both challenged and inspired by one of the best university level instructors I have ever had.
I will also state that I have self-studied topics on numerous occasions, and I have found that 'programmed learning' is one of the most effective teaching methods yet devised.
I have not seen the current edition of 'Fundamentals', but based on my experience with the book since its infancy and my personal knowledge of Dr. Roth's abilities and interest in teaching this material, I would expect the book to be an excellent learning tool.
New Fifth Edition correct flaws.......2004-08-02
I reviewed the Fourth edition before, but have now revised that review to reflect major improvements in the new edition.
This is a learn-by-example style of text. Not only are examples given in the body text, but the first end-of-chapter problems are worked out in detail, and solutions are given for many more. I consider this a fine book for enriching the material I'm presenting in class.
The old edition was dated and promoted design styles that are not advised. The new edition fixes those problems and this is now a great text. Three chapters introducing VHDL have been added after the chapter sequences on combinatorial logic, sequential logic, and digital systems. Thus VHDL doesn't intefere with the teaching of the fundamentals, but serves to enhance by providing the modern practices. The chapters are not thorough enough for practicing design in VHDL but are a good introduction. Relatively modern components are now used in the practical examples. I don't think anyone will mind that the chapters on asynchronous state machine design are gone.
The new text comes with a CD containing a simple VHDL simulator (which I have not tested), SimuAid (also untested) and Professor Roth's venerable LogicAid -- a combinatorial logic synthesis tool which if nothing else provides a means that students can check their hand-made designs. People using this text in self-study would probably find the CD paricularly useful, although it has little value in school settings where professional software tools are available.
the best for excercises.......2002-11-23
i have been using both roth and mano for my digital design course at college and my experience is that roth is 'the' book for digital design.it is clear ,concise and to the point.mano seems to be a little too descriptive and sometimes drives you early to bed.however it is always good to refer to mano as for PLDs are concerned..

A superbly written book on fabrication of silicon integrated circuits.Chapter 2 provides a gentle yet fairly detailed introduction to the overall process and each item touched therein is expanded subsequently. The language is clear and figures convey their intended meaning, overall its a wonderful starting point for further study in silicon integrated circuits technology. As has been pointed out in one of the reviews here, this book has been adopted in many US universities. The link embedded in this review is one such instance and as such can be used to obtain more information and benefit from a full set of audio lectures, assignemnts and other supplementary material as a part of MIT's open course ware program. The instructor is Prof Judy Hoyt.

Integrated view of modern CMOS technology from the world expert.......2006-08-16
I've read a number of books in this field - Plummer, Wolf, Campbell, Sze, Madou. Each book has its strength, and Plummer's book stands out in terms of its broad, in-depth coverage of modern silicon CMOS technology. It doesn't cover MEMS or other exotic nanofabrication.
Many students who've read the book said that Chap 2, where a modern CMOS process flow is described step by step from the substrate to back-end, was the best part. By doing so, the authors teach us that not only unit processes but their collection, i.e. process integration, is the key in successful CMOS technology.
Overall, the quality of the content and attention to small details are superb, as one can expect from a book written by one of world's foremost researchers in the field (Plummer is the Dean of Engineering School at Stanford). In particular, I liked chap2 for integrated description of CMOS flow, the lithography chapter which covers optical systems, details of photoresists, phase shift masking. Also, diffusion and ion implantation parts are second to none, since the authors made numerous contributions to the research field. It's such pleasure to learn about the latest in silicon IC processing from the Silicon Valley authority at Stanford!
The book has been adopted by many US engineering schools already, and I see it on many bookshelves belonging to IC engineers. If you need an authoritive, well-organized reference for modern silicon IC processing, I strongly recommend this book.
Excellent source on MODERN silicon vlsi technology.......2005-02-13
The best part of this book is that it covers modern fabrication technology. I expecially liked the approach of introducing the complete CMOS fabrication flow in the beginning. It puts a context to following chapters. It is what I call system level approach for slicon fabrication. There is also emphasis on measurement and simulutions that are missing from traditional books. Both these are essential to modern technology. Also, I was very happy to see details on manufacturing choices - e.g. LOCOS vs STI. Explanations are clear.
This is a text book, therefore at times may seem too dense, but definitely worth it if you are a process engineer.
Excellent combinations of basics & updated research.......2000-09-01
Before this book was published, Wolf & Tauber's book was the only good reference I had. Plummer's new book has a thorough review of basic principles, very well updated parts on current manufacturing equipments (Wolf's book also has extensive coverage in this respect). The best part in my opinion is oxidation & diffusion parts where the authors are one of the leaders in current research. The book not only focuses on the specific details, but also gives an integrated view of the whole CMOS fabrication process, which I enjoyed a lot.
I strongly recommend this book for students who want to learn basics of IC fabrication and also professional engineers who needs a good and well updated reference.

One of the finest books on Digital Logic Design. Read it cover to cover make full use of its content.
Very readable.......2003-02-25
As a software engineer working in embedded applications environment, I needed to pick up digital electronics fundamentals fast. This book was extremely helpful, and enabled me to better understand the often-cryptic datasheets of microcontrollers.
Crystal Clear.......2002-08-24
When I took digital design class, I struggled to find a book that is easy to understand. I tried to read several books, including Roth's book, all of them are hard to understand. Thankfully I bought Floyd's book and his book is the best digital design book I have ever read so far.
1.) It has lots of colorful diagram that clearly illustrate the topics in each chapter.
2.) Each topic has its own exercises, and each exercises has solutions provided at the end of each chapter. Doing the exercises improves my understanding of the subject.
3.) Lots of examples in each topic. If you read and understand the examples, you can do the exercises.
4.) It covers some digital technology, including the PLD.
5.) Once you finish reading this book, you will be ready to read advanced digital design book.
Good job Mr. Floyd!
Great to learn from!.......2002-06-21
This book was mostly through. but many times there were parts that were assumed and it was never mentioned in the text. but I learned alot from the book and would recommend it for a student of Electrical Engineering.

Reference Resource.......2005-09-30
Comprehensive in-depth reference tool - this is how the book has been characterized by a university professor using it for his course instruction. I concur. Amazing amount of practical detail in one refernce. Dimensionally a bit large and gangly but likely would require mulitple volumes if in standard book size. The web page link is a nice feature given the fast moving topic. Cleanroom reference is out of date and could be updated given the reference focus. Text discusssions well written and unusually pleasant to read.

Customer Reviews:
The worst I have ever seen.......2004-07-19
This book is the WORST book I ever used. There are barely any examples. The contents are written very unclearly. It takes long time to undertand the SOLVED EXAMPLE in the book, let alone the problems.
Even solved problems on the website, you find wrong solutions...
I DO NOT recommand anyone even read this book...
Excellent introductory text.......2003-04-16
This logic and computer design text is excellent for an introductory digital logic course. Although the text is slightly dated, the presentation of key concepts and ideas is clear and understandable. Overall, it provides a strong and thorough background on digital logic fundamentals.
Needs more examples!.......2003-03-12
The other reviews said it all. This book is detailed and thorough, but is practically impossible to learn from because there are not enough examples, and there are no answers to the problems! You can get selected solutions on the website, but even with the answers, it can often be very difficult to figure out how to do the problems.
I'm on Amazon.com right now because I'm desperately seeking other books that will help me pass my Logic Design class...
Excellent introductory text.......2003-01-02
This Logic and Computer Design text was excellent for my introductory digital logic course. Although the text is slightly dated, the presentation of key concepts and ideas is clear and understandable. Overall, it provides a strong and thorough background on digital logic fundamentals.
was the lowest I could go.......2002-11-27
This book is the worst book I ever used there are barely any examples or I should say full examples. The index doesn't match the text so you can't use it to look up key points. If you have a instructor who is going to use this book do yourself a favor and tall him/her out of it.
