Book Description

For the past seventy years, ferrites (magnetic ceramics) have been prized for a range of properties that has no equivalent in the existing metal magnetic materials. They have contributed to many important advances in electronics and new high-performance products are appearing all the time. Ferrite technology has produced greater progress in the past 15 years since the first edition was published. Many of the semiconductor and IC technology responsible for the computer and Internet explosion would not have been possible without the magnetic materials technology needed for powering and otherwise exploiting those developments. Modern Ferrite Technology, 2nd ed, offers the readers an expert overview of the latest ferrite advances as well as their applications in electronic components. This volume develops the interplay among material properties, component specification and device requirements using ferrites. Throughout, emphasis is placed on practical technological concerns as opposed to mathematical and physical aspects of the subject. The book traces the origin of the magnetic effect in ferrites from the level of the simplest particle and the increases the scope to the larger and larger hierarchies. From the desired magnetic properties the author deduces the physical and chemical material parameters, taking into consideration major chemistry, impurity levels, ceramic microstructures and grain boundary effects. He then discusses the processing conditions and associated conditions required for implementation. In addition to conventional ceramic techniques, he describes non-conventional methods such as coprecipitation, co-spray roasting and single crystal growth. The second section of this book deals with a complete listing of the many important applications in the field including ferrites for permanent magnet, telecommunications, power supplies, memory systems magnetic recording and microwave applications. The function of ferrites in each of these applications is described. The requirements of the electronic circuit and device are broken down into the individual component specifications with regard to size and configuration. Design criteria for power level, degree of stability and cost are then considered.

      Book Description

Nanomagnetism is a rapidly expanding area of research which appears to be able to provide novel applications. Magnetic molecules are at the very bottom of the possible size of nanomagnets and they provide a unique opportunity to observe the coexistence of classical and quantum properties. The discovery in the early 90's that a cluster comprising twelve manganese ions shows hysteresis of molecular origin, and later proved evidence of quantum effects, opened a new research area which is still flourishing through the collaboration of chemists and physicists. This book is the first attempt to cover in detail the new area of molecular nanomagnetism, for which no other book is available. In fact research and review articles, and book chapters are the only tools available for newcomers and the experts in the field. It is written by the chemists originators and by a theorist who has been one of the protagonists of the development of the field, and is explicitly addressed to an audience of chemists and physicists, aiming to use a language suitable for the two communities.

        Book Description

Magnetic materials are all around us, and understanding their properties underlies much of today's engineering efforts. The range of applications in which they are centrally involved includes audio, video and computer technology, tele-communications, automotive sensors, electric motors at all scales, medical imaging, energy supply and transportation, as well as the design of stealthy airplanes.

This book deals with the basic phenomena that govern the magnetic properties of matter, with magnetic materials and with the applications of magnetism in science, technology and medicine.

Although an in-depth understanding of magnetism requires a quantum mechanical approach, a phenomenological description of the mechanisms involved has been deliberately chosen in most chapters in order for the book to be useful to a wide readership. The emphasis is placed, in the part devoted to the atomic aspects of magnetism, on explaining, rather than attempting to calculate, the mechanisms underlying the exchange interaction and magnetocrystalline anisotropy, which lead to magnetic order, hence to useful materials. This theoretical part is placed, in Volume I, between a phenomenological part, introducing magnetic effects at the atomic, mesoscopic and macroscopic levels, and a presentation of magneto-caloric, magneto-elastic, magneto-optical and magneto-transport coupling effects.

I think it is one of the best books I ever read. If you are a grad student looking for "in depth" knowledge of magnetism this isn't the one. If you are looking for basics before putting your hands on something complicated this is a PERFECT choice. Doesn't have any complicated equations or anything but it still helps in knowing the basics and so its pleasure reading it. A must for every undergrad I would say.

If you were studying NMR, you need to read this. This is one of the best NMR texts ever existed. Importants physical aspects of NMR are well written in this text. This text also provides us with explanations about ESR, MRI. Simply, read this and keep it on your bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars book is by excellent teacher.......1999-05-21

This is a comprehensive treatment of NMR for both graduate students in physics and researchers by someone who is clearly a master teacher. Attention is given to NMR in liquids (important for biologists) as well as solids. Schlichter is generous with details and is unfailingly aware of the needs of readers desiring more detailed explanations of the physics in difficult situations. He does not shirk the hard points and there is no hand-waving of difficulties. The selection of topics is excellent and the Appendices are detailed and helpful.

It comes therefore as a minor disappointment that the present (3rd) edition is marred by literally hundreds of typos and other small errors (just for perverse kicks, I compiled a partial list that goes on for many pages). I suppose this is ultimately the responsibility of the author, but it seems to me Prof. Schlichter is entitled to more assistance from the copy editor(s) at Springer than apparently was provided.

In a very few places the exposition falters. An example of this occurs in the treatment of the Bloch--Wangsness--Redfield theory. The "trick" referred to after Eq. (5.331) is nonsensical mathematically (try doing it with differential equations in general, you won't get away with it!). In general, the error incurred by using the approximate Eq. (5.110) will be greatly exacerbated after integrating over long times and the answer will be garbage. Fortunately, there is no need for any such "trick", just follow the derivation given in the book but with $\rho^*(0)$ in Eq. (5.110) replaced by $\rho^*(t'')$, so that (5.110) becomes exact. Rather than replacing $\rho^*(t'')$ by $\rho^*(0)$ at the outset as Schlichter does, one needs to defer the approximation as long as possible; then you see that the integration over long times does not give an appreciable error (it is proportional to a convergent infinite-time integral times $\tau_c$). But this is a mathematical, not a physical flaw.

There is a handful of other places where the exposition might conceivably be improved, but this doesn't detract significantly from the great value of this textbook as a detailed guide and reference. Let's hope that more careful copy editing is done for the next edition.

4 out of 5 stars The solid-state physicists NMR bible.......1999-03-29

Go for this book when you need a rather complete introduction into the field of solid-state physics NMR and at the same time want to invest into a book that will provide you over the years of your work with more and more detailed information. Slichter gives a thorough mathematical background as well as a discussion of most modern NMR pulse techniques. You may want to accompany this book in the long run with some other that tells you more about designing pulse techniques and/or is more visiual in this aspect. Students will find the book as a whole quite difficult to read, but it is very worthwhile to invest your time into the introductory chapters and then jump into the area of application that you have to become familiar with. Later you will appreciate your investment fully because this is one of the books from which you continue to learn till your retirement.

            Book Description

The magnetocaloric effect describes the change in temperature of a magnetic material under adiabatic conditions through the application or removal of an external magnetic field. This effect is particularly pronounced at temperatures and fields corresponding to magnetic phase transitions, and it is a powerful and widely used tool for investigating the magnetic state and mechanisms of these transitions. Recently, there has been significant interest in its possible exploitation in magnetic refrigeration and cryocooling systems. The Magnetocaloric Effect and its Applications presents a complete overview of theoretical and experimental research results surrounding the magnetocaloric effect, and a comprehensive discussion of current and potential applications of the phenomenon. The book reviews those materials with magnetic moment both of band and localized nature and various types of magnetic ordering. It also considers materials with more exotic magnetic structures, and gives a detailed discussion on experimental and theoretical studies of a great number of rare earth magnetic materials, with emphasis on the physical interpretation of observed phenomena.

4 out of 5 stars Rigorous yet easy to read........1997-08-27

What a find! The text is addressed towards a broad audience and assumes only first-year (freshman) physics as a prerequisite. Beginning with a welcome review of basic definitions, it moves smoothly into all the core topics of magnetism. The explanations are clear and the derivations are carefully worked out. End-of-chapter problems are provided. Particularly interesting were the chapter on experimental methods and the most straightforward discussion on units I have yet seen (units in magnetism are notoriously confusing).

Although published in the 70's, the book still has value if you want to learn the fundamentals. I literally couldn't put the book down after I got started, and before I knew it, I had learned so much reading most of it over the weekend....
