Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the field.......2001-11-10

Honestly, I wan't five stars blown away by this book, but it deserves better than to be rated one star because someone in Korea wants the solutions manual. After reviewing the wave and quantum nature of light and some elementary solid-state physics, this book discusses the modulation of light by electrical, magnetic, and acoustic means. This theoretical background is used to motivate the next chapter, which covers display devices like LCDs. The next two chapters cover the basic theory of lasers and some of their non-communications applications like holography and machining. The next chapter covers devices to detect light, followed by a chapter on fiber optic waveguides. At this point, the authors have provided sufficient background to discuss optical communications systems. The final chapter covers the non-communcations applications of fiber such as fiber-optic sensors and coherent fiber bundles for imaging. Overall, the book is a good introductory survey of optoelectronics.

      Product Description

The use of image stabilization has grown to the point that it is now a common component of modern optical systems for imaging, communications, and remote-sensing applications. The benefits of image stabilization to astronomical research alone are so rich that it is common for astronomical telescopes, built over the last century, to be retrofitted with fast steering mirrors and tip-tilt sensors to extend their useful lifetimes.

This text provides the basics of image stabilization starting with a consideration of the cause of image blurring and an introduction to the components commonly used in constructing a stabilized imaging system. With this foundation, an example image stabilized system is described and used to introduce some of the important parameters in evaluating the performance of image stabilization systems. As image stabilization systems are key components of adaptive optics systems, the more sophisticated sensing and correction devices used in this area are briefly addressed. Rather than being a mathematical, rigorous treatment of image stabilization, it provides the basic ideas in an easy-to-read format.

3 out of 5 stars Good starter book.......2001-02-21

I'm an engineer becoming familiar with fiberoptics. This book is very oriented towards the non-engineer. Much space is devoted to explanation of terms dB, and basic laws of physics.

The issue of multimode vs single mode is handled too cavalierly. The reader is left faced with an undesirable trait of fibers without sufficient explanation of the eigen values or transmission theory. This is good starter book only.

4 out of 5 stars Good, not Great, Guide to Fiber Optics.......2000-12-20

I recently purchased this book, "Fiber Optic Reference Guide" by Goff and "Understanding Fiber Optics" by Hecht. I knew nothing about fiber optics and had to get up to speed in a very tight time frame. This was my second favorite of the three, as it did a very good job of providing a basic explanation of the technology behind and implementation of fiber optics. This book was not bad in any way, there were merely some areas where Goff's book (which was the most useful of the three) were more up to date and the illustrations were more clear. Also, it did seem as if a few items within the book were a little dated.

5 out of 5 stars Good for beginners in fiber optics.......2000-12-18

This is an excellent book for someone just starting off in the fiber optics industry. Everything is explained in a completely understandable way, with lots of examples and quizes to to test your knowledge at the end of each chapter. I would especially recommend this for sales and marketing types who don't need to know as much as engineers, but need to be able to understand the basics.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction.......2000-10-28

I teach telecommunications and was looking for reference material. What I found was a book that will help me better explain complex concepts in terms anyone can understand. I already understood refraction, but Mr. Crisp even gave me new insight in that area. The book is dated, so don't expect to learn about PMD or DWDM, but as a basic tutorial to understanding the basic science behind fiber optics, you won't find clearer text. I should warn, that the math is pretty steep, but he still makes you understand the concept, if not the equations.

      4 out of 5 stars A very good book.......2000-10-28

A very good book to start your education on Fiber Optics. It gives a very basic overview of Fiber Optics that should form an excellent background for further reading.

1 out of 5 stars Full of fundamental and transcription errors.......2005-03-20

      The content is interesting.
It tries to focus on the basic concepts behind the various components used in DWDM.
The problem is the numerous errors and the incoherence throughout the book:
      - notation varies;
      - errors are flagrant and should have been easely corrected with a simple review;
      - some fondamental errors of physics: the photon does not a mass!!!! (p. 8)

      Should be reedited.

3 out of 5 stars OK for a salesman, but overpriced........2003-04-25

The book is fine for a salesperson, but why it cost so much? As a pshysisist the book gives me a good reference on how to approach explaning some technologies to non PhD people. By all means not technical - childs play.

1 out of 5 stars Not easy to understand.......2002-10-17

Too complicated with all the abbrevations and mathematical details not to understand for "non-scientists". Not everybody is an PhD!

Much better book is the following:
      ISBN: 3895781746

3 out of 5 stars Adequate introduction, but there are better..........2001-01-24

The book has good coverage, and will leave the reader with a decent overview of what's out there, but very little understanding of anything. While that seems like the point of such a book, it doesn't really make the book useful. This isn't popular physics--anybody who needs an overview of DWDM probably needs a little more than this tiny book can offer.

The other reviews about the book's low editing quality were right on. It has the feel of something produced with a laptop, one weekend and an inkjet.

      1 out of 5 stars Mostly useless.......2001-01-04

Only 70 of the 250 pages are dedicated to DWDM technology directly. Full of conflicting and ambiguous comments. For instance the section on Arrayed Waveguide Grating states in two consectutive comments: >AWG's are temperature sensitive. To eliminate thermal drift... Next Comment: >AWG's operating in the wide temerature range (0-85C) have been reported. Most topics are treated rather lightly. Seems like a book put together in a hurry to cash in on the recent "Fiber" goldrush.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth having.......2003-09-09

This slender volume attempts to present, as the preface says, a detailed review of the most important numerical analysis techniques for calculating modes and beam propagation in optical waveguides and fibers. If that's what you're after and you're not already expert in this area, it's well worth buying. The authors are both long-time practioners of these arcane arts in major Japanese firms, and it shows. On the other hand, it was originally written in Japanese and the authors are industrial researchers, not teachers; and to some extent that shows also. But I'm glad to have it, haven't encountered anything better in this area, and have no hesitation in recommending it.

          Book Description

Recent advances in the development of low-loss optical fibers have revolutionized the field of telecommunications, and fiber-based networks form a key part of international communications systems. This book introduces the physical principles of optical fibers, and details their use in sensor technology and modern optical communication systems. The authors begin by setting out the basic propagation characteristics of single mode and multimode optical fibers. In later chapters they cover optical sources, optical detectors, and fiber-optic communication system design. They also treat a wide variety of related topics such as doped fiber amplifiers, dispersion compensation, fiber sensors, and measurement techniques for the characterization of optical fibers. The book emphasizes physical and engineering aspects of the subject. It will be an ideal textbook for undergraduate or graduate students taking courses in optical fiber communications, photonics, or optoelectronics.

          4 out of 5 stars A Good Introductry book........2000-12-04

It is a good introductry and a reference book in fiber optics. Detailed derivations of different aspects of Multimode and Single mode fiber are given. Chapter on Erbium doped fiber emplifier is also good. It can be used as a good reference book except for its index.

4 out of 5 stars Refers to paperback version.......2000-01-31

This book serves as a relatively good introduction to fiber optics. The book has a rather thorough derivation of the theoretical modes in waveguides and fibers for different index profiles, but is more weak on the experimental side e.g. scattering mechanisms for light is only discussed briefly. On the whole, the book can be recommended as an introduction, but probably not as a stand-alone reference. The by far largest drawback of the book is the index or rather lack of index. Considering the large amount of information presented in the book, the index is almost non-existent. This seriously impairs using the book as a reference handbook.
