Customer Reviews:
One indispensable volume for a thin film maker.......2002-11-02
Almost all knowledges about the manufacturing of an optical thin film are coverd.Especially bibliograpy is substantial.Although most required things have gathered, they are good.About the theoretical portion of the characteristic of a thin film, explanation is by for beginners a little.Although there is nothing, since there are some which explained it mostly, they do not become a problem.
As the 2nd book,it is indispensable to those who are going to study the optical thin film.
In a thin film maker's bookshelf,It is one volume which should be equipped with and placed.
Book Description
Written from an industrial perspective, Solid-State Laser Engineering discusses in detail the characteristics, design, construction, and performance of solid-state lasers. Emphasis is placed on engineering and practical considerations; phenomenological aspects using models are preferred to abstract mathematical derivations. Since its first edition almost 30 years ago this book has become the standard in the field of solid-state lasers for scientists, engineers and graduate students. This new edition has been extensively revised and updated to account for recent developments in the areas of diode-laser pumping, laser materials and nonlinear crystals. Completely new sections have been added dealing with frequency control, the theory of mode-locking, femto second lasers, high efficiency harmonic generation, passive and acousto-optic Q-switching, semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAM) and peridically poled nonlinear crystals.
Customer Reviews:
Maddeningly peppered with errors but indispensable.......2007-04-17
Where to begin on the errors that have propagated through so many revisions? Equations are incorrectly referenced in the text some figures have problems. See fig 8.30, p513 5th revision where the curves Xopt and Yopt appear to be switched for just one example. The best part about the book is the summary of materials and the references, which you often need.
My personal note to Mr. Koechner: Dear kind sir, please publish errata for this book. I mean no disrespect, it is the best reference of its kind. However, it could be improved substantially.
The Laser Engineer's Bible.......2005-02-26
Anybody who needs to design or work with solid-state lasers should own a copy of this book!
Ideal for entry level or senior SS laser engineer.......2001-07-07
This is a SSL classic, and the 5th Ed. is perfect.
A good source of information about solid state lasers.......1998-07-29
The book is very thorough in its coverage of the physics of and design of a wide variety of solid state lasers. Plenty of examples of laser performance are included. The book assumes a senior or first year graduate school level of knowledge for the theory discussions of the first few chapters. There is enough useful information to make the book valuable for the professional laser engineer, as well.

Book Description
The book describes the most advanced techniques for generating coherent light in the mid-infrared region of the spectrum. These techniques represent diverse areas of photonics and include heterojunction semiconductor lasers, quantum cascade lasers, tunable crystalline lasers, fiber lasers, Raman lasers, and optical parametric laser sources. Offering authoritative reviews by internationally recognized experts, the book provides a wealth of information on the essential principles and methods of the generation of coherent mid-infrared light and on some of its applications. The instructive nature of the book makes it an excellent text for physicists and practicing engineers who want to use mid-infrared laser sources in spectroscopy, medicine, remote sensing and other fields, and for researchers in various disciplines requiring a broad introduction to the subject.
Customer Reviews:
mid IR book .......2006-06-30
This book contains diode lasers, Quantum cascaded lasers, OPO, ultrafast and fiber lasers and even some contents on THz .In addition to brief recap of theoretical knowledge to understand the nonlinear process it is primarily good for editorized summary of mid -IR lasers experiments done around the world. For anyone interested into detail, there are lots of references at the back of every chapter. If you are looking for theoretical understanding of those various processes mentioned above it is not what you want.
However as an Electro-optics engineer working in the field of nonlinear optics, the contents are quite useful for me personally.

Book Description
This graduate-level text presents the fundamental physics of solid-state lasers, including the basis of laser action and the optical and electronic properties of laser materials. Some knowledge of quantum mechanics and solid-state physics is assumed, but the discussion is as self-contained as possible, making the book an excellent reference as well as useful for independent study. After an overview of the topic, the book is divided into two parts. The first begins with a review of the quantum mechanics and solid-state physics, spectroscopy, and crystal field theory; it then treats the quantum theory of radiation, the emission and absorption of radiation, and nonlinear optics; it concludes with discussions of lattice vibrations and ion-ion interactions and of their effects on optical properties and laser action. The second part treats specific solid-state laser materials, the protypical ruby and Nd-YAG systems being treated in greatest detail; it concludes with a discussion of novel and non-standard materials.

Book Description
This book examines the underlying science and design of laser materials. It emphasizes the principles of crystal-field engineering and discusses the basic physical concepts that determine laser gain and nonlinear frequency conversion in optical crystals. Henderson and Bartram develop the predictive capabilities of crystal-field engineering to show how modification of the symmetry and composition of optical centers can improve laser performance. They also discuss applications of the principles of crystal-field engineering to a variety of optical crystals in relation to the performances of laser devices. This book will be of considerable interest to physical, chemical and material scientists and to engineers involved in the science and technology of solid state lasers.

Book Description
The book deals with one of the promising and interesting directions of laser physics ? laser cooling of solids. The history of research in this direction is described briefly and the results of experiments with laser cooling of condensed media are discussed. Special attention is given to the physics of cooling processes and mathematical description of these processes. Problems of construction of self-cooling solid-state laser and echo-processors are investigated. One of the chapters is concerned with magnetic cooling, spin locking and photon locking, and also methods of reducing the uniform width of spectral lines of information carriers of optical echo-processors. Problems of optical cooling of solid-state quantum processors are also discussed.
