Book Description
This text/reference provides an excellent introduction to fundamental topics in radiation protection, including energetics, kinetics, interaction, external radiation protection, dosimetry, standards, and measurement. Chapters on radioactive waste and radon, topics not normally covered in introductory texts, have been incorporated as well. An extensive glossary of terms, abbreviations, acronyms, physical constants, units, and unit conversions provides a ready source of frequently needed information. Several appendices contain specifications and vendors for commercially available portable radiation survey instruments, personal dosimeters, and radon/radon progeny monitors.
Book Description
This book treats the experimental techniques and instrumentation most often used in nuclear and particle physics experiments as well as in various other experiments. It provides useful results and formulae, technical know-how and informative details. This second edition has been revised; sections on Cherenkov radiation and radiation protection have been updated and extended. Thanks to the author's long teaching experience, the material is presented in a very practical, hands-on way making the book a useful text and laboratory companion for students and experienced scientists alike.

Concise overview for the nuclear experimentalist.......2000-08-23
Leo's book is a good, concise and concerning standard methods especially in nuclear spectroscopy up-to-date summary of the field. The basic physics ideas are introduced, although not too deeply discussed (but this is a book for the experimentalist, therefore no objections). It is a helpful companion in simple experimental considerations which come to an experimental nuclear spectroscopist every day: The color codes of resistors and the overview over the connectors in a CAMAC crate are examples for these features.
Elaborate references are given for each section that make it possible for the reader to find additional descriptions rather easily. Additional insight on dosimetry and radiation damage and some remarks on statistics make this book an interesting alternative to G.F. Knoll's "Radiation detection and measurement".
The emphasis of Leo's approach is surely (a) on a concise overview rather than an in-depth discussion and (b) on nuclear spectroscopy (gamma and particle detection at some MeV or so) rather than medium and large-scale high-energy physics experiments. Widely used components of high-energy physics equipment are, however, presented, but additional literature might be needed.
One final remark to my fellow reviewer Fabio: One example for a "statistical process" is e.g. the number of electron-hole pairs created in the detection of a charged particle or gamma ray. This process is truely statistical, i.e. it does not depend on things that the experimentator has at hand. The intrinsic resolution of a high-purity Germanium detector with respect to a, say, 3 MeV gamma ray cannot be changed (at least to a large extent). Have a look into Leo's book if you don't believe me!
Quite deep overview, but statistics..........1998-11-27
It's a good book: very good English, it treats quite everything from the point of view of CAUSES! It's full of precise references (good for the thesis!).
Expecially good topics: ionization and scintillation detectors; photomultipliers. Lacks: calorimetres and Cerenkov counters! For these topics I suggest: 'Particle Detectors' (many auth.), Cambridge University Press.
Just one thing about statistics: you have always to substitute this sentence:
''... because of the statistical nature of the process...''
with
''...because of the uncertainties related to the process, we choose to treat it as statistical...'' OK, it's a bit longer; but are you sure that all advanced physicians know that Caos does not exist as a real entity? It's just a choice of the experimenter to supply lacks in understanding and measuring the process or to simplify it. If you don't believe so, I ask you: why do you make research? Let's talk about it.

Customer Reviews:
New edition marred by typos and awkward editing.......1998-11-01
This new edition of the classic text is a disappointment, and it's use as a textbook is not recommended.
For this 3d edition, the list of typographical errors compiled by colleagues and myself stands at four pages and growing. Errors can be found in the text, the chapter problems, and their solutions. Other solutions which are not clearly wrong may inexplicably differ from your own solution at the second significant digit.
Formulae are rarely derived from first principles. One exception is the change in wavelength for a photon undergoing Compton scattering from an electron, but, even here, a crucial equation (the relativistic energy invariant) is conspicuously omitted, without which the final equation cannot be derived. The text does not even mention relativity in discussing Compton scattering. (The index does reference "Relatively effects" (sic) at pp. 4-11.)
Equations and formulae contain, at times, an unnecessary proliferation of multiplication signs and units which obscures the underlying physical principles and the simplicity of the equations themselves. Students are better served by a clear mathematical presentation of the underlying physics, rather than being dropped into the middle of an obscure equation made even more so by the inclusion of several constants whose only purpose is to make the units work out. While any text on this subject must deal with the unavoidability of old and new units, my suggestion is to derive the formulae from first principles and deal with the units issue (which, after all, only amounts to including appropriate conversion factors) separately as examples or chapter problems.
Finally, the multiplication sign, "x", should be reserved for arithmetic and scientific notation, not symbolic mathematical equations. See, e.g., Equations (3.10), (4.31), (10.17), (10.32), etc., as examples where the multiplication sign is unnecessary. The text also uses the multiplication sign even where numerical values are already set off by parentheses. The text's overuse of the multiplication sign gives the text a grade-schoolish flavor.
Useful general text on radiation protection and safety.......1998-01-02
In over 25 years since its first edition, this classic textbook has been used to train countless professionals in the fundamentals of radiation protection and safety. This third edition of Cember's work incorporates several fundamental changes in radiation protection standards and methodologies adopted since publication of the second edition in 1983. The third edition has also been expanded to include more recent safety standards for radiofrequency and microwave exposure.
This textbook is useful for an upper division undergraduate or first graduate course in radiological protection, health physics, or radiation safety. Each chapter is accompanied by a useful set of problems and suggested readings. Unfortunately, many of the readings and references cited are either out of print or difficult to find.
Book Description
The latest edition of this text presents both theory and clinical practice of radiation protection and radiobiology -- from X-ray production and nuclear medicine to radiation therapy. Updated to reflect recent regulations, this text serves as a complete review for national certification exams as well as a useful review for clinical practice.

Practical Radiation Protection and Applied Radiobiology.......2000-07-16
This book good for student who study in medical imaging. It can help us to understand how to protect ourselve from radiation and also to our patient, where the radiation can effect to our health. so, it very good to our read. Nice to undersatnd it.
Excellent enhancement to the first edition.......2000-06-06
I've found the first edition of the book to be quite useful for teaching radiology residents and studying for board exams. One of the best features of the book is that it is emminently readable and relatively uncluttered with jargon. The second edition expands on the first with additional material in each chapter, and considerably more pictures that are illustrative, rather than just eye candy. Concepts in radiation protection are further illustrated and reinforced by case studies. Any one in the radiological field would do well to have this text as part of their bookshelf. Those with the first edition, I recommend upgrading to the second edition.

Customer Reviews:
VALUABLE IRRITANT..........2006-08-07
Physics for Radiation Protection by James E. Martin is a valuable yet irritating book. Only the chapters about detector operation and counting statistics are truly professional. In the earlier part of the book, there is a vry characteristic lack of rigour. Almost every sentence, every paragraph is badly worded and lacks rigour. This book is the product of our modern culture whre people sit in front of PCs the entire day, and type manuscripts direcly on PC. A well-versed theoretical physicist will cringe when reading most of this book. However, despite simplistic science, bad formulations and dispassionate grammar, the book holds significant utilitarian value -- it can really be quite useful for practicing, practical, non-academic radiation protection staff. Bypassing the regular physics courses and substituting this shortcut into physics for RP learners, resulted in this book: Terrible academic physics, but still useful for the practical science of Radiation Protection.
An invaluable contribution.......2000-08-02
James Martin has produced a work that all members of the health physics community will find invaluable. Students, instructors and practicing radiation protection professionals will find this book useful. It covers, in a clear and concise manner, all of the important radiation physics topics that comprise the foundation of radiation protection. Whether used as a teaching tool or as a reference, this book fills a void in the literature that has long existed. I wish this work were available when I was receiving my radiation protection training.
As the RSO of a major ophthalmic pharmaceutical research and development company, I will apply the information in this book to both radiation safety operations and to radiation safety training for our users.
My congratulations to James Martin for publishing this book. I highly recommend it to all in the radiation protection field.

Customer Reviews:
Perfect Shape.......2007-09-17
Was a little nervous about purchasing a book online but it came back in perfect shape and was exactly what i was looking for. Looks the same as buying it in the campus bookstore but at a savings of about 45$!
Good Resource.......2006-03-15
This book has been a good resource in my program. It was originally supposed to be the testbook for our radiographic physics and equipment class but I haven't used it very much in that regard. Only about 1/4-1/3 of the book covers this topic. Overall, it is a good resource because it covers many areas within radiography.
Radiology Physics Workbook.......2006-02-21
Overall, I thought this workbook to be very helpful. While not all of the information in the workbook was covered or required for the classroom, an understanding of all of the chapter material aided in increasing test scores. Be wary of the answer keys in the back; not all are correct. I found that at least one question in a set had a wrong answer listed in the key. Look up the answer in the text instead of relying on the keys; you will also gain more information this way helping to increase your test scores.
Hits the mark..........2006-01-13
This book is very good in accurately and easily describing the x-ray system, fluoroscopy, radiologic physics, artifacts, and digital x-ray imaging. This book greatly helped me in school and served as an outstanding study reference for the ARRT exam. This book ranks high along with "The Ultimate Study Guide for the Registry Examination in Radiography: Key Review Questions and Answers",Volumes 1 and 2 by Patrick Leonardi. These volumes had tons of pertinent questions/answers for ARRT prep. "Radiologic Science for Technologists: Physics, Biology and Protection" by Stewart C. Bushong will also continue to serve as a reference for years to come.
FIBC Educational Tool.......2001-04-17
I found the textbook to most helpful as I prepared for my coursework and professional exams. The examples are thorough and the illustrations are creative. The supporting workbook was key to my successful completion of the course. If this is your topic, this is the book for you.
