This book is useful. There is a variety of problems from fairly easy to difficult, but in general, the problems are similar (and often the same) as problems in graduate texts such as Merzbacher, Cohen, etc.. My complaint with this book is not necessarily the typos (although they should be fixed given the popularity of this book). My complaint is that that the authors sometimes skip steps in the solutions that are so critical, that is is nearly impossible to understand them. A useful solution can leave out mathematical drudgery, and calculations, but it shouldn't leave out critical steps that have been covered earlier in the book, because a solutions manual like this is not usually used as a textbook, it is used as a reference.

For instance I may want to try a practice problem on the Variational Method, and the problem leaves out steps that may have been covered in earlier chapters. So I spend hours playing with the problem until I find the solution. This is not useful, and not what a problems and solutions book should do. I understand that not every step can be included, but I would rather see more complete solutions, which might sacrifice the unsolved problems and the blank pages at the end of the book.

This book seems to have been typewritten from the authors' handwritten notes, because many of the typos are consistent with penmanship. But one of the authors should go over all of the solutions, flesh out the missing steps, and correct the errors. Without doing this, the physics student can't rely on this book as a trusted source, since they never know if the error they encounter is a typo or their own mistake.

Regardless, this is a useful book, and I have learned a lot from it.

This book is a complete introductory course that presents the basic concepts of Quantum Mechanics.

As a newcomer to this subject, I was puzzled by the separate definitions of the similar notions of inner product (denoted < , >), scalar product (denoted ( , )), scalar product (denoted < | >) and Dirac bracket (also denoted < | >). It would be most helpful if, in a future edition, the authors could define these four notions in one place, along with an explanation of the differences (if any) between them.

Apart from this minor annoyance, for which I deducted one star, this book succesfully tackles a most important and difficult subject. The writing and presentation are up to the usually high standards of Schaum's Outline series. There are plenty of exercises, both solved and unsolved. And it's excellent value for money. For the price, there's no serious competition.

A better mathematical treatment, based on linear vector spaces, may be found in "Principles of Quantum Mechanics" by Shankar.

La mayoría de los textos de Física Cuántica que he leído, son inabordables en algunos momentos por la complejidad de la misma notación, falta de ejemplos directos de aplicación, y deficientes estructuraciones del contenido. El resultado es que finalmente te ves rodeado de una gran cantidad de libros de texto, para cubrir diferentes capítulos.

En cambio este libro, sobresale con holgura, cubriendo todas esas carencias.

* La estructura del libro es correcta.
* El número de ejemplos es muy amplio (como si no en un Schaum's).
* La notación es la que normalmente se utiliza en este campo.

¡ Qué más se puede pedir, en un libro de texto !.

I bought this book as I was taking undergraduate-level Quantum Mechanics. While it has a better review and analysis of bra and ket notation than, say, the Griffiths text, and has excellent applications (square well, energy levels, Landau Levels, etc.), it was practically useless until I finished the course. Additionally, as others have pointed out, the outline is riddled with errors. It is not as well-written as Murray Spiegel's Vector Analysis or Fourier Series books. If you're a graduate student or want a refresher course, I'd consider it. Otherwise, this is not the ideal choice.

I bought this book because I really needed practice solving problems in QM. It lacks the mathematical background (ie, linear operators, commutators, commutating operators, and other necessary mathematics). Oh, there's a couple of problems, but as far as I am concerned, I threw the money away. It has not helped me. I am a grad student, and I never studied operators, or commutators, and of course, no one else ever uses them except in QM. I still don't know how to use operators !! My bad, like the title says, don't waste your money. The 1 star in the rating is only because they wouldn't let me submit this review without a 1 to 5 rating, as far as I am concerned it rates Zero stars

This small book is very suitable for those who want to brush up their quantum mechanics knowledge and practice as well as new learners. Its level of difficulty is about upper-undergraduate level.

Each chapter is allotted a certain subject of quantum mechanics, the theory is laid out very succinctly and briefly. Almost no derivation is given. So, one must consult quantum mechanics reference books for detailed derivations. There is one set of fully-solved, instructive problems in each chapter. The problems are designed in such a way that the student can learn and practice a different aspect of the chapter in each question.

If one wants to understand quantum mechanics going beyond the nasty, abstract and lengthy mathematical hodgepodge, this books is for you!

5 out of 5 stars The Best QM Learning and Practice Tool Available!.......2004-08-16

This book is a spectacular tool for those learning Quantum Mechanics! I can't say enough good things about this little book! This is not strictly a textbook per se (you will not get the extensive theoretical derivation of rotation operators or second order perturbation theory, for example.) That being said, it is better written, clearer and more useful than many so-called textbooks out there! While the book is designed to be more like a review book for those that have already taken a course in QM, I think you can almost learn the theory and practice of QM with this book alone. The book has ten chapters covering ten basic QM topics (Numerics, Fundamentals, the Schroedinger Equation, Orbital Angular Momentum and the Hydrogen Atom, Spin and Addition of Angular Momentum, Time-Independent Approximation Methods, Identical Particles, Time Dependent Perturbation Theory, Scattering and Miscellaneous Topics.) There are about three pages of key equations at the beginning of each chapter, followed by key problems and WORKED SOLUTIONS. The problems that are selected are selected with great care, seemingly to demonstrate the most important concepts in the most clear way. There are only about 10 problems at the end of each ten chapters, for about 100 total in the book, but each problem introduces a new key concept or key technique--- and I do emphasize KEY. The solutions are extensive, clear, and well thought-out, with no steps left out of derivations, and comments made as to the importance of each concept when appropriate. In short, there is no filler in this book, and what is presented is pure gold. If you work slowly through each of these 100 problems, you will do well on your exams, wow your friends and neighbors, and be an expert in the basics of QM when you are through. Now isn't that worth $32.00?

If you have already taken undergraduate QM course and want to review what you have learned, it is a best book with readable size for couple of days. The book summarizes the basic formulae with a brief comments at each chapter. After keeping in mind the key idea you see the problems which are application of the formulae. The problem sets are so well organized as to help you get a consistent concept of what QM really is. Master it.

If you are studying quantum mechanics using popular textbooks such as Griffiths', Shankar's, Liboff, Sakurai, Ballentine, ... you must have this problem book on shelf. You can look up ALMOST every typical problem that appeared on qualifying exams--almost any hard problem you don't know how to solve. I personally find this very very helpful. Hihgly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Shade Tree Quantum Mechanic .......2007-02-15

This is a superb difficult book, not for the faint-hearted. It contains solutions involving Green's Functions and Propagators, not usully found in such books. Don't look for detailed solutions to the "usual suspects" - if they're there, they are there to support the more challening problems. The solutions do not always include as many steps as I like to include. Filling them in adds to one's understanding of the method of solution. I didn't always like the path the book tread and followed a different one - at least I had something to compare to 5 pages later. (The book's solution was nearly always (if not, always) superior to mine. But you know "My solution, right or wrong, but my solution!"

The problems are at a level (and some correspond to) the text by Mertzbacher. I showed the book to my QM professor and his response was to write down the ISBN. Not every type of problem at this level is solved and I would get Zetelli's "Quantum Physics" to fill in gaps, say in WKB and Angular Momentum. There are a number of other useful books, for example, "Problems and Solutions in Quantum Mechanics" written in China based on US university qualifying exam problems, and a short, but very good, book from Cambridge U. Press: Squires - "Problems in Quantum Mechanics - with Solutions" which covers problems through time-dependent perturbation theory.

All of these books titled "Problems and Solutions on (subject): Major American Universities Ph.D. Qualifying Questions and Solutions" are invaluable tools for a physics graduate student, in my experience. For quantum mechanics in particular, solved problems often illustrate difficult concepts better than any explanatory paragraph in a text.

Criticism: Sparse index and contents. You'll find yourself adding notes to pages in the book quite often.

If you are a student in physics, I suggest that you get your hands on these books.

Sometimes it is very difficult to teach a course in quantum mechanics because there are few problems that have solutions that do not require months of research and numerical methods to solve. I have found that in my own courses on quantum mechanics, I take a lot of notes and I do a lot of homework assignments, but I don't have a whole lot of concrete, well-explained problems and solutions to show for all of the work. Since I found this book and those that accompany it, however, I have a very good source for problems and their solutions in QM. These problems are an excellent study aid for the solutions provide insight into the basics of the field. Strongly recommended.

I study physics in Chile, and this book has been pretty useful for a first course in QM, but I have to note that the first 170 pages are titled "Problems and Solutions on Electromagnetism"! I hope someone gets word to the editor....

Other than that, I'm pretty sure this book will find a place on your private shelf.

This is a good book, although it's hard to use, and the reason for that is simple: with such a great variety of problems in Quantum Mechanics it's next to impossible to conveniently systemize the content. I did find this book useful in preparation for my Ph.D. qualifying exam, but looking back I can tell that I would have passed without it. I think it's a great book for those looking for an easy way of doing homework, whereas educational value of this book is questionable.

This text is refreshing if you want a lot of worked examples to help you through another text like, (Quantum Computation and Quantum Information, Michael A. Nielsen, Isaac L. Chuang, ISBN: 0521635039). I was excited when this text came out and had an order in before it got off the press. When I got the book I immediately found useful worked examples that helped me get past some of the problems I was having with the notation in my other books. I have had this book for several months and have worked though enough of it to give it a 5 star rating. There are many problems in the text I am not advanced enough to work yet.

I started quantum computing for a research project and taught myself most of the material I know. This text is not easy and does not start at ground zero. It had problems I could understand at my level when I purchased it, but at that point I had an idea of how gates worked and a good solid review of linear algebra to stand on. I think that the kindest book out of the dozen on my shelf to a total beginner is, (Approaching Quantum Computing, Dan C. Marinescu, Gabriela M. Marinescu , ISBN: 013145224X).

This is the only book of its kind available at the time of this review. I wish the book had more simpler examples and just a bit of an explanation for some of the solutions. Sometimes the solution is given but it still does not seem apparent to me. I wish the text was just a bit kinder.

If you are working on a research project and struggling with some of the notation or the exact details of calculation this text may be extremely useful to you, but you will need another book to explain the theory.

The main virtue of this book is that it clears up any confusion regarding the notion of integrability in a quantum system. After an historical overview of the theory of exactly solvable systems in chapter 1, the author recalls the notion of integrability in classical mechanics, restricting his discussion to systems that are governed by a Hamiltonian. Using the standard action-angle canonical transformation he shows that the integrability of a Hamiltonian system is, as is well known, indicated by the presence of a finite set of quantities that are in `involution', i.e. they are constants of motion.

This notion of integrability will not work for finite-dimensional quantum systems, as the author shows by using a system that hypothetically has a set L of mutually commuting operators, this set also including the Hamiltonian. He shows that no two commuting operators are algebraically independent, and at most D commuting operators are linearly independent, where D is the dimension of the eigenspace of one of the operators. The author then presents a notion of integrability that is less trivial, in that it will give information on the dynamics of the quantum system.

Since quantum systems are typically systems of particles that are interacting with each other, the dynamical events of interest are the scattering events. Indeed, the scattering theory of quantum systems is highly developed, and has inspired an enormous amount of research in both physics and mathematics. The author justifies the viability of this notion of integrability by considering several elementary systems, starting in one dimension and considering one and then two particles, he shows that energy and momentum conservation are strong enough to force the momenta of the scattered particles to be merely rearrangements of the incoming momenta (the particles essentially "pass through one another").

Things are more complicated when three particles are considered. Energy and momentum conservation can no longer insure that the asymptotic momenta are merely rearrangements of the incoming momenta. The famous `Bethe ansatz' though allows the determination of ratios of amplitudes for scattering in terms of two-body collisions. Genuine 3-body scattering is to be included in the total asymptotic wavefunction, which will deviate from a plane wave as it emerges from a 3-body overlap region. The author call this `diffractive' scattering, and he notes that it will not occur for exactly solvable systems. For generic one-dimensional systems it will occur however, and this prohibits the use of Bethe ansatz. The presence of diffractive scattering will prohibit the occurrence of a third independent conserved quantity, and this gives the author a criterion for defining `non-integrability.' The quantum systems considered in the book are `integrable' and thus do not support diffractive scattering. The consequences of diffractionless scattering in quantum systems are for the author just as interesting as what happens in classical integrable system, and he has written this book to elucidate the properties of these "beautiful" systems.

Early on in the book the author discusses various techniques that will be used in analyzing the systems throughout the book. These techniques arise in the analysis of systems that are in the ground state and just above the ground state, and when they are at finite temperature. The systems that are studies are all integrable and nondiffractive, and thus obey what the author calls the `fundamental equations', which are coupled equations for the momenta of the system. Systems governed by the delta-function, inverse-square, and hyperbolic potentials are a few those considered when discussing these techniques.

An entire chapter of the book is devoted to the Heisenberg-Ising model, which was the first one that was tackled using the Bethe ansatz and is a model for a magnetic chain and a quantum lattice gas. This model is integrable, or "diffractionless" as an application of the Bethe ansatz proves, and the author shows how to obtain a complete set of equations for the spectrum using this ansatz. The ground state energy in zero flux and zero field is calculated, and this calculation is then generalized to the case of non-zero field and flux.

Also considered in the book are exchange models, which are quantum systems that have potentials that allow the exchange of quantum numbers between two particles. The author shows how to take some of the potentials that are considered in the book, such as the hyperbolic potential, and modify them to obtain exchange potentials. The hyperbolic potential in particular is strongly repulsive at the origin, and so the wavefunction of two particles will vanish when they meet, prohibiting mixing of different types of particles. This can be alleviated by the incorporation of permutation operator that exchanges the two particles.

The author also discusses the famous Hubbard model in the last chapter of the book. This model, used in condensed matter physics for modeling systems of strongly interacting electrons, is integrable in one dimension, as the author shows using again the Bethe ansatz.

The best chapter of the book is chapter 7, for therein the author addresses in detail more general questions on the property of integrability and how to prove when a system is integrable and when it is not. Noting that there is no optimal way to show that a system is integrable, he discusses various approaches to showing integrability of systems that support scattering. The discussion in this chapter is very lucid, and consequently readers will gain a lot of insight into the properties of integrable systems, particularly in the role of the Yang-Baxter equations and the subsequent notion of a `transfer operator'. The author's explanation of a transfer operator as corresponding to the scattering of test particle with all the other particles is one that clarifies its role and is an explanation that is not found in the literature on exactly solvable systems. He also gives a very interesting discussion of the physics behind non-integrability, using as examples scattering of light rays off wedges of mirrors. These examples serve to shed more light on the behavior of nonintegrable systems, which is more helpful than mere mathematical calculations.

    This is one of the most complete problem and solution book for the undergraduate quantum physics I have seen. Don't be disappointed by the look of this book, although it is printed somewhat unusual i.e cheap paper small fonts but, its complete.

    The problems are much like the problems you can find in quantum chemistry or quantum mechanics books( undergraduate) and the solutions are clear and concise. Of course prior knowledge in quantum mechanics and physical chemistry is required but that you already have if you are looking for a solution book parallel with your text book.
    At the beginning of every chapter some explanation and key points are given that help to recall from text book without opening the text book.

    I would say, its cheap and its almost complete for undergraduate in physics and more than complete for undergraduate in chemistry.

    This collection of numerous problems in both old atomic theory as well as (slightly) more modern theory is a great review to students who may have taken introductory QM classes and need a refresher, or as a supplement to those students currently learning QM. The topics covered are varied and problems include complete solutions. Overall a good volume to include in any early theorist's collection.
